Through the efforts of member schools such as yours and a more sunaware community, we are seeing a decline in melanoma rates in people under 60 who have spent half of their life exposed to sun protection messages. Sacred Heart has a “No Hat, No Play” protocol as part of our SunSmart policy. Prior to 2019 our students were required to wear their hats in terms 1 and 4 only. New guidelines from the Cancer Council advise that schools no longer adhere to ‘no hat no play in terms 1 and 4’. The recommendation is that hats are worn from around mid/late August to the end of April/beginning of May when the UV rays are typically higher. Students are still required to wear their hats and we will notify the students when ‘no hat no play’ protocol finishes. Please help support our SunSmart policy by ensuring your child follows the SunSmart measures… We strongly recommend the application of broad spectrum sunscreen (SPF30+) before students come to school. Children should bring sunscreen with them to school, please ensure it is of the ‘roll on’ variety, with the container clearly labelled. It is important that you show your child how to apply this correctly. Later in the year more information will come via, the school newsletter, school assemblies and classroom activities which will be used to highlight and reinforce the Sunsmart policy for students, teachers and parents, when the ‘no hat no play’ protocol comes into force around mid/late August. Sacred Heart Oakleigh this year marks your 22nd SunSmart Birthday. That’s a brilliant achievement! We appreciate

your continued support and look forward to many more SunSmart years.

Thank you for all of your support and work in updating your school’s SunSmart policy and renewing your SunSmart

membership.

Through the efforts of member schools such as yours and a more sunaware community, we are seeing a decline in

melanoma rates in people under 60 who have spent half of their life exposed to sun protection messages.

(February 2019)

The Sacred Heart Sunsmart policy was written to educate children and staff in suitable SunSmart protection

strategies, the harmful effects of the sun and provide a safe school environment.

Sacred Heart has a “No Hat, No Play” protocol as part of our SunSmart policy. Prior to 2019 our students were

required to wear their hats in terms 1 and 4 only. New guidelines from the Cancer Council advise that schools no

longer adhere to ‘no hat no play in terms 1 and 4’. The recommendation is that hats are worn from around mid/late

August to the end of April/beginning of May when the UV rays are typically higher. Students are still required to wear

their hats and we will notify the students when ‘no hat no play’ protocol finishes.

Please help support our SunSmart policy by ensuring your child follows the SunSmart measures…

● We strongly recommend the application of broad spectrum sunscreen (SPF30+) before students come to

school.

● Children should bring sunscreen with them to school, please ensure it is of the ‘roll on’ variety, with the

container clearly labelled. It is important that you show your child how to apply this correctly.

Later in the year more information will come via, the school newsletter, school assemblies and classroom activities

which will be used to highlight and reinforce the Sunsmart policy for students, teachers and parents, when the ‘no hat

no play’ protocol comes into force around mid/late August.

On the school website there is a Sunsmart widget for your information.

ANZAC DAY At the ANZAC Day dawn service in Oakleigh, four of our Grade 6 Community leaders represented the school in the laying of a wreath at the cenotaph. They were respectful and did a wonderful job of representing our school community. We congratulate them on this achievement. There were a number of other students in attendance with their families too and it was a great community event. We even had the opportunity to have our photos taken with our federal member for Hotham, Clare O'Neil. We hope you enjoyed ANZAC day with your families. Regards, Tess Milner and Angela Walsh & Community Team
