RIVERSIDE PRIMARY SCHOOL
ISSUE NO 24
15 AUGUST 2019
From the Principal
This week we trialled a new way of entering the school as part of the West Tamar
council proposal for Cleghorn Avenue. We are providing feedback to the Council so
please email the school [email protected] if you have any
comment.
As mentioned last week Mrs Whitney, Mrs Andrea Holmes, Miss McGee and myself
attended a symposium in Queensland in relation to inquiry based learning. It was a
wonderful opportunity to talk to both classroom teachers and to visit classrooms.
We noticed similar language between our schools – learning assets, visible learning
journeys, split screen teaching, collaborative teams. It was both reaffirming but we
were all very proud of the learning that takes place at Riverside. We had an
opportunity to share a snapshot of our work and several schools were so impressed
they are going to send a team to visit Tasmania.
We should highlight that our facilities are well above anything we saw and that the
learning opportunities provided at Riverside are now becoming to be recognised
nationally. Tasmania has a lot to offer. We are proud to be part of innovative public
education.
Those teachers who attended professional learning on Saturday in Launceston and
Penguin reported new connections to the work they are already doing.
Feedback from Arts Celebration
This is the comment from the Secretary of Education, Mr Tim Bullard
Thank you to our fabulous learners that performed tonight. It was fantastic to see the nerves,
the resilience demonstrated by performing, the confidence, but most importantly the joy on
their faces!
Thank you too for those that created the inspiring art exhibition. I loved the self portraits,
the frost drawings and the kinder inquiry.
And finally thank you to you and your inspirational staff that supported our learners to
succeed.
A great night.
CANTEEN
Next week’s soup is chicken and corn. Jaffles will be available
Wednesday and Thursday. Cheesy Bolognese or chicken, cheese
and avocado for $4.00.
Next week the Grade 3 to 6’s are off to Launceston College’s
production of Matilda! Many of our students pathway into LC in Years
11 and 12 and they become very aspirational of wanting to be involved
when they attend college.

HAND FOOT AND MOUTH DISEASE
We have a confirmed case of hand, foot and mouth disease within
our school community. Hand, foot and mouth disease is generally
a mild viral illness. Common symptoms are blisters that start as
small red dots, usually inside the cheek, gums or on the side of
the tongue. Children may also have a low grade fever, sore throat
and tiredness. Children with this illness should be excluded from
school until the blisters have dried. It is advised that if your child
develops these symptoms that they are taken to the doctor.
STUDENT WELLBEING SURVEY
ATTENTION: PARENTS AND CARERS OF STUDENTS IN GRADE 4, 5 AND 6
The wellbeing of our students is important to us.
To get an understanding of how students across Tasmania feel about their own wellbeing, students in Grades 4–6 at Riverside Primary
School will be taking part in a wellbeing survey.
The Student Wellbeing Survey is part of the Department of Education’s Child and Student Wellbeing Strategy.
The details for the survey are:
When: Week 7 and 8
Who: Grade 4, 5 and 6
What do I need to do: You and your child don’t need to do anything. The survey will be done in class time and will not
require your child to prepare in any way.
A letter with more information has been sent home with all Grade 4-6 students, including Frequently Asked Questions and a form to
sign and return to the school if you do not want your child to participate in the survey.
Students in Grade 5 and 6 at Riverside Primary School who were enrolled here in 2018 will also be completing the Resilient Youth Survey.
Further information is included in the letter home.
If you would like further information, please contact Anita Batty.
Thank you for supporting us to ensure that all our learners are safe, feel supported and are able to flourish, so they can engage in learning.
URGENT DONATIONS NEEDED The RPSA are in need of our school community’s support. If
you are able to donate to this year’s Father’s Day Stall now is
the time. Only 2 weeks to go……
Stuck for ideas? Here are some suggestions: buckets/sponges,
individually wrapped chocolate, coffee/tea sachets,
skincare/bathroom products, books, crosswords, pens, fishing
lures or containers, key rings, tools, car wash items, gardening
items….
Donations can be placed in the box marked ‘Father’s Day’ at
the main office. We truly value and appreciate all the support
we have been given to make these events possible for our
children.
Volunteers to help run the stall are still needed as well so
please contact Sheryl Griffiths on 0419103518. Volunteers
MUST have a current WWVP. The stall will be held Thursday
29 August and Friday 30 August.
Have you got excess plastic bags lying around the
house?
The RPSA is trying to do its part in recycling plastics…. if you
would like to donate your spare plastic carry bags to the stall
then here’s your chance. They can either be handed into the
office or placed into the donation box.
Thank you for your support.
HURRICANE AND TASSIE TIGER VISIT
Hurricane Belinda Vakarewa and Tassie Tiger Courtney
Webb have been on a road trip around Tasmania visiting
numerous primary schools promoting girls cricket. On
Tuesday 6 August, Riverside Primary School was lucky
enough to have Courtney and Belinda give the Grade 2
students a skills lesson and an insight to the life of a state
cricketer.
Yesterday, Wednesday 14 August, Mrs Bovill received a phone call from Mr Jim Midson, a former Riverside Primary student. As
you may know, yesterday was Riverside’s 65th birthday. We talked to Jim about what it was like 65 years ago. We showed him
around the school and the new build.
Mr Midson remembers Riverside Primary in 1954 as having 3 classrooms with 2 classes per room. Riverside was opened as
Cormiston State School (the old St Anthonys on the West Tamar Highway) was too small.
Cleghorn Avenue was a gravel road and the school looked out onto a field of oats.
The uniform has changed a lot over the years – there was lots of grey and for sport the girls wore a maroon pinafore.
Before school every morning a truck would deliver wood, children would chop up the wood and place it under the classrooms
for the wood fired heating.
At lunchtime Mr Midson swapped sandwiches, played football and cricket, netball and softball for the girls, monkey bars and lots
of children played marbles.
In class he remembers Arithmetic, Reading and Writing and getting the cane if you did the wrong thing.
A big thank you to Jim for coming and giving us some information about what Riverside was like. We really enjoyed learning
about it as it has made us curious about the differences between then and now.
Thank you from William Slater and Ava Connell
Mr Midson sitting in a desk exactly the same as 1954 This is where the wood was dropped off. Students
chopped it up and stored it under the school.
