Dear Parents,

Form Three were in court this week - nothing sinister just a chance to understand some of our legal system with the help of local magistrates. The Upper School had a different insight into our political system when they had a chance today to meet our local MP, Geoffrey Cox. It must be an interesting time to be a Conservative MP and our students certainly asked him some very searching questions. No one gave him a P45 though!

Last week ended with the Upper School hog roast and Ceilidh. This is a special event because it is embraced wholeheartedly by the participants and you can see some of their dancing on our Facebook page. We have an Upper School because we want our Year 11 to think with the maturity of Sixth Formers so it was nice to see everyone integrating. On that theme our first UCAS applications are ready to go - it is incredible how quickly this comes around each year and it is always impressive how well our pupils are able to present themselves.

There is no rugby tomorrow - we played the scheduled fixtures against Exeter School last weekend and the results included an excellent win for our U12 rugby team in their first outing. Every boy in the First Form is in the rugby squad so this was a real team effort.

Under 11 Netball vs St. Joseph’sOn Monday the 2nd of October, a quietly confident Under 11 netball team ventured to St. Joseph’s for a match. From the start the Shebbear girls dominated somewhat, and scored two quick opening goals. Accurate powerful passing, and nimble footwork meant that the team kept the court covered and the opposing players were effectively marked. Shebbear went on to score a succession of goals, convincingly shot by Millie, Savanah and Freyja in rotation. As always, Demelza provided solid defence, capably backed up by Willow and Bethan M. The other upcoming Year 5 players, Ella and Izzy V acquitted themselves well and adapted quickly to the faster pace of play and increased height of the net. A really fantastic game to watch. Well done to the whole team. The final score was 15 - 2 to Shebbear and the players of the match were Willow and Millie.

Under 11 Rugby vs St. Joseph’sThe Under 11 boys played a very tough first rugby match against a well organised and clinical St. Joseph’s side. For many of the boys, this was their first full contact match and to their credit, they stuck to the task with great determination and commitment.

Prep SchoolWe started the week in the Prep, by looking at sportsmanship, and comparing examples of good and bad. With the Invictus Games having recently taken place in Toronto, there was certainly plenty of good sportsmanship on show – not least in one of the 50m swimming finals, where all of the competitors, who had already finished their race, headed back down their lanes to cheer on USA’s Tiana Lopez. In the sport of cricket, a comparison was made between two incidents in the sport’s history. Trevor Chappell’s underarm bowl on the final delivery of Australia’s match against New Zealand in 1981 was compared to the image of Freddie Flintoff consoling Brett Lee after Australia’s 2 run defeat against England in the 2005 Ashes series. The importance of fairness and sportsmanship was emphasised in all aspects of life.

Our photography competition provided a large number of entries. Mr Charman, Shebbear’s resident photography expert, came down to the Prep on Wednesday afternoon to judge each category. The results will be announced in Monday’s assembly and Mr Charman will present some prizes.

The Prep School’s Harvest Festival took place on Tuesday afternoon, with Rev Susanna Metz conducting the service. All of the children in the school contributed to the service, through song, drama or poetry and the total sum raised from donations and the sale of produce was £240, which will be sent off to Christian Aid. Our thanks to everyone for their generosity.

Congratulations to Emma, Lila-Mai, Dixie-Belle, Alice, Lydia, Isabel V and Finlay for winning last week’s Golden Stickers. Our BAFTA (Behaviour Award For Thoughtful Actions) was awarded to Lottie,

Special mention must go to Jack, who was superb around the field in carrying the ball and terrier-like tackling from the outset. St. Joseph’s deserved the win but our boys showed enough potential to make strides in their performances over the next fixtures.

Year 6 HistoriansAhead of their visit to Morwellham Quay next week, as part of their History topic on the Victorians, Year 6 have been learning about Victorian school life. Particular interest was given to the punishments children received for their misdemeanours!

Cricket Success for FreyjaOur congratulations to Freyja, who has recently been presented with the Under 11 Coach’s Award at Werrington Cricket Club.

This is an even greater achievement, considering Freyja was playing for the team when aged nine. Well done Freyja.

Year 5 and 6 Church VisitAs part of their RE studies, Year 5 and 6 visited Rev Martin Warren at St. Michael’s Church in the village yesterday afternoon. The children were shown around the church and Rev Warren explained the stories behind the stained glass windows, how to ring the church bells and the meaning of turning the Devil’s Stone. We look forward to welcoming Rev Warren to take assembly next Friday morning.

Year 1 and 2 Maths InvestigationsYears one and two have had lots of fun with mirrors and autumn leaves this week whilst we have been investigating shape and symmetry during our maths lessons.

News from the Pre-SchoolWhat a busy couple of weeks we have had. Last week the children made some fabulous spoon puppets of a family member. Hopefully some of you may recognise yourselves.

The children loved bringing in money to buy cakes from the Macmillan coffee morning, although some found it harder than others to part with.

This week we have been looking at instructional texts and the children worked really hard to independently follow instructions on how to make a potato hedgehog.

We were so proud of the children who performed in Harvest Festival and they sung clearly and confidently. Not easy, considering some have only just started with us this term. We were a few children down but they definitely made themselves heard.

Next week is our last week of swimming and the following Monday we look forward to welcoming the adults to a big breakfast celebration from 9.00 to 9.30am. This will be a lovely opportunity for parents to meet each other as well as looking at some of the hard work and beautiful artwork they have done so far.

Upper School Ceilidh and Hog RoastThe Upper School enjoyed their September Hog Roast and Ceilidh Dance on Friday night. This is always a very popular evening with over 100 students enjoying the food and dancing. Many thanks to The Spit Roast Specialist for providing a fantastic hog roast, and Oggle Band Ceilidh for keeping everyone dancing all night.

The word Ceilidh comes from the Gaelic for ‘gathering’ or ‘party’, a social event with Scottish or Irish folk music and singing, traditional dancing, and storytelling.

Shebbear Form 3 Enact Mock TrialWe were pleased to welcome representatives from North and East Devon Magistrates on Wednesday afternoon. As part of their Magistrates in the Community initiative, Form 3 pupils were able to act out a mock trial themed on an assault occasioning actual bodily harm. The Assembly Hall was set up to represent a courtroom and the pupils learned about all the different parts of the courtroom and the roles involved, including the magistrates, legal advisor, prosecutor, defence solicitor, usher, defendant and witnesses. The pupils then took up their own roles within the court and acted out the trial.

This experience gave the pupils an invaluable insight into the workings of our justice system and the potential consequences of breaking the law. We would like to thank North and East Devon Magistrates for providing such a thought-provoking experience.

Rugby ReportsU12 Rugby Shebbear 25 - 20 Exeter School A’sThe Exeter boys started well and went into half time in the lead. One of their players, bigger than most in the age group, unsettled Shebbear. Hunter Middleton put in nine tackles in the first half and was noticeably exhausted at the break. Jack Balsdon, with his marauding runs made sure that Shebbear kept in the game with three tries. In the second half, with the slope in their favour and armed with courage, Shebbear fought back to win the game with two more tries coming from Peter Thorn and Charlie Davis, Charlie was charged up in the second half and produced a Man of the Match performance. Exeter scored at the death but it wasn’t enough to overturn the winning start to the season. It is encouraging that although we won we have a lot of areas we can improve.

Report by Mr Watkins

Shebbear Under 15s v Exeter SchoolShebbear Under 15s took on Exeter School on Saturday and had the privilege of doing so on the First XV pitch, Tower Field. The team really stepped up to the occasion and produced some excellent rugby both in attack and defence. The performance demonstrated some of the skills that the team have worked hard on improving this term and their retention of the ball was outstanding thanks to some

excellent support play. Shebbear’s early pressure was rewarded with an excellent try from flanker Ben Harding, before some quick thinking from a penalty 5 metres out from Owen Hendry allowed Harrison Mitchell to score. The boys led 12-0 at the break and the second half continued in the same fashion as the first. Harrison Mitchell added his second try, before Freddie Stevenson scored two of his own to give Shebbear a clear lead. The final score of the game came from Marc Mestre, his first score for the school in only his third game of rugby. This capped a fantastic performance from the team, who ran out winners by 36 points to 12.

Shebbear Under 15s and 14s v St. Joseph’sShebbear Under 15s and 14s both took on St. Josephs school on Tuesday afternoon in two 20 minute games. The Under 15s took the field first and continued where they left off on Saturday with a confident performance. Tries from Fergus Fong, Fin Irish (two), Freddie Stevenson, Angus Harvey and Mathew Luk saw the team run out comfortable winners by 38 points to 0. Then it was the turn of the Under 14s who who started strongly, scoring through Sean So to take an early lead. Further scores from Jacob Luxton, Sean So with his second, and Aaron Molnar helped the team to record a 26-12 victory.

Shebbear 2nd XV v Kingsley SchoolShebbear 2nd XV took on Kingsley School on Wednesday afternoon in their first appearance of the season. A much changed line up, containing a number of debutants, produced some excellent running rugby and took control of the game from the first whistle. Early tries from Oli Arden and Jake Weeks gave Shebbear the lead which they never looked like surrendering. The team continued to attack and their dominance saw the boys leading 24-0 at half time. Shebbear introduced a number of replacements in the second half, many of whom were playing their first competitive game of rugby. Alex Schumacher, Gery Perlaki and Franz Staats did not look out of place when they joined the game, and Shebbear continued to dominate proceedings. A number of further scores, including a first for Shebbear for Timon Chapman saw Shebbear run out convincing winners by the final whistle. Well done to all those involved in this impressive performance that highlights the strength in depth that the College possesses on the rugby field.

Hockey ReportsThe U12’s have been very busy over the last 2 weeks with lots of Hockey matches. A brilliant 2-1 win over St Joseph’s where the girls fought back from a goal down, was followed by two really tough matches. The girls lost 8-0 against Blundell’s B team with goal keeper Freya Fong being voted player of the match and then mid week saw a defeat to Exeter Cathedral 8-1 (Ashleigh Cornish). However, the next day the U12’s had a much needed victory against Kingsley 4-3 Ashleigh Cornish (2), Isobel Watt, Gabriella Gee.

U14/15 v Blundell’s (lost)On Saturday the 23rd September we played Blundells away. We knew it would be a tough game from the word go so the tension was high. We managed to keep it steady, the ball kept going back and forth until Blundells scored from a short corner which brought the pressure on. By the second half we were ready to go back out and fight. Our confidence grew throughout the game, with great

work from Evie Cuningham (who had already played for the U13 that morning) sent the ball up into the oppositions half creating some good shooting chances. Laura working hard in defence really helped the team keep their spirits up. Billie was fantastic in goal keeping us in the game with some excellent saves. Woman of the Match awarded to Ellie Phillps.

Bude Junior Hockey Club Dear Parents,

Bude Junior Hockey Club

Having thoroughly enjoyed working at Shebbear College for the last 4 years I would like to provide

you with information about the Bude Junior Hockey Club which I organise and manage at the

Budehaven School pitch on Sunday mornings during the autumn and spring terms.

We have over 60 Junior members age 8 – 15 who attend the training and take part in occasional

leagues and tournaments during the season. Coaching is provided by myself, and several of our older

Junior members who are now playing for one of the adult teams in the main club.

A few Shebbear College students already attend the coaching sessions and I would like to invite

anyone else who is interested to come along and take part. We charge a subscription of £10 per year

and a fee of £2 per week for the training. This helps us cover the costs of the pitch hire and the

equipment we need.

If anyone is interested in more details for this season which has just started I can be contacted by email at [email protected] or by phone on 07476 330148. Alan Muller

Head Coach, Bude Junior Hockey Club
