Pastor’s Corner                                          Rev. Samuel Loterte, SSS Important Dates:

Mission Statement: Centered on the Word of God and the Eucharist we gather as a commu-nity of disciples of Jesus Christ as we seek full-ness of life.

Blessed with many cul-tures and gifted with the Hawaiian spirit of Aloha we pledge to share our heritage and our faith, and commit ourselves to the full development of our people.

With Saint Joseph as our patron we offer our gift of self for the greater glory of God.

Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time, July 11,2010.

Dear Brothers and sisters,

Peace in the Lord Jesus Christ!

This past Friday, July 9, we celebrated our 148th Founda-tion Anniversary as a Parish. We thank God for all those years of being with us. We are also grateful to all pastors, priests and religious who were part of this beautiful parish. And most of all to our parishioners who have dedicated themselves to keep the faith alive.

In today's gospel Jesus is asked, "What must I do to inherit eternal life?" This is a question that we also ask for ourselves. What must I/we do to achieve FULL-NESS OF LIFE? Or What must I/we do to be saved?

Jesus gives us the answer by telling the story of the Good Samaritan. This is a story in which people go out of their way to help someone in need. To help someone in need is to be neighbor, one who is sensitive to life and to the joys and pains of peo-ple.

It is in being a neighbor that our faith is shown for what it really is. We are proud that we have faithfully done this for the past 148 years. And we will continue to do so in the name of Jesus Christ.

May Saint Joseph continue to be our inspiration as we journey together as a parish community.

God bless you,

Fr. Samuel E. Loterte, SSS

This is Franciscan Father Greg Friedman with the "Sunday Soundbite" for the Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time. Cincinnati, my hometown, is a city of neighborhoods. Cincinnatians will tell you that they’re from Clifton or Hyde Park or Delhi or Over-the-Rhine. We think locally, proud of the different neighborhoods we come from. Today, we hear in the Gospel the familiar story of the Good Samaritan. The key question is: Who is my neighbor? When the Jewish audience first heard this parable, there must have been shock: Jesus says a Samaritan—a member of a group the Jews shunned—was neighbor to the man in trouble, because he showed mercy. This story fits into one of Luke's special Gospel themes—the welcoming of the strangers, the outcast, the poor, into the circle of God's King-dom. Luke's missionary community must have faced a special challenge to wel-come people from a variety of backgrounds and cultures. Perhaps this is a good Sunday to examine our parish's hospitality and welcom-ing attitude. Who is my neighbor? is an important question for every Christian community. Though we may take pride in the history and traditions of our par-ish, we cannot exclude strangers or newcomers. Rather, we must recognize Christ in the stranger, as we heed Jesus' command to "Go and do likewise." I’m Father Greg Friedman, with the "Sunday Soundbite" for St. Anthony Mes-senger Press, on the Web at FranciscanRadio.org.
