STUDENTS ATTEND JACKSON LABORATORY PRESENTATION...

MID COAST HUNGER PREVENTION PROGRAM AND BHS...

Mid Coast Hunger Prevention Program (MCHPP) and BHS continue to grow our relationship each year. This year MCHPP and BHS are looking for 3-5 students to sign-up to help in the soup kitchen and food pantry on every sec-ond Thursday of the month. Students would be granted field trip permission (excused absence) to attend this from 8:30-1:00 in the kitchen or 8:30AM -11:00 in the food pantry. Students are required to be in good academic standing and are responsible for making up any missed work. MCHPP is also looking for help on Saturday morn-ings 9:00AM – 1:00PM. This will be an ongoing need for them each Saturday. BHS is committed to helping pro-vide volunteers for MCHHP and encourage students to sign up early with Mr. Wilson as these slots are first come first serve.

On October 30th, seven Brunswick High School attended a presentation by The Jackson Laboratory (JAX). While JAX is located in Bar Harbor the presentation was held at The University of Southern Maine. The students

AP BIOLOGY CLASS ATTENDS SYMPOSIUM...

(reprinted with permission from the Times Record)

On Friday, Oct. 18, students in Ms. Dumont’s AP Biology class attended a lecture at Bowdoin College by Dr. Dan-

iel P. Schrag, who teaches in the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences at Harvard University and was ap-

pointed by President Obama to the President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology in 2009. Dr. Schrag

spoke about the increase of atmospheric carbon dioxide and the impact of climate change on human society.

Brunswick students were also able to listen to four student speakers as well as attend a symposium showing more

than 80 Bowdoin student projects in the David Saul Smith Union. Ms. Dumont praised the lecture as highly com-

pelling, and says that it was an amazing opportunity for anyone to have been able to attend.

A reminder to please verify that the hourly amount under the community connections category on your report card

is correct. Any questions may be directed to Mr. Wilson at 319-1910 ext. 2203.

A review of the policy is as follows:

Students must complete a minimum of thirty (30) hours of community service as a graduation requirement.

Students need to earn five hours before their 11th grade year and fifteen before their 12th grade year to obtain

off campus privileges.

It should be noted, in 2008 the Brunswick School Board amended the policy to allow 8th graders to earn up to

10 hours towards their thirty hour requirement for graduation at Brunswick High School.

Certain job shadow opportunities may compliment the spirit of this requirement while also directly satisfying ca-

reer objectives suggested by the Maine Learning Results. To the extent that these opportunities exist, pre-arranged

and approved job shadow experiences may be used to fulfill up to ten hours of the thirty hour requirement.
