Friends in faith –
As my family and I have gone through the rituals of
box-unpacking, mail-forwarding, and home-making, I
am mindful that the roof we share here in Simi Valley
is the twenty-second such building I have called home. Two things I
learned somewhere around the 15th or 16th time: always practice gratitude
and adaptation can be a spiritual discipline. We are so grateful for the com-
munity of Simi Valley United Methodist Church; grateful for the ways in
which you have so immediately and deeply you have had us to feel ground-
ed and rooted in your lives; and grateful for the resource, beauty, and
(Camille adds!) storage of the Montgomery House. As I settle into my new
role in your midst, I do so consciously, prayerfully, and hope-filled.
In August, we are immediately presented with an opportunity to shine in our
ministry to families and children through our Vacation Bible School. This
year’s theme is “Galactic Blast” and I am excited to be in fellowship with
and ministry to the families of our church and community as we blast off
together. You will soon come to know of my love for Science-Fiction.
Blending two of my great loves, I have been developing a class on “God in
Science-Fiction.” This has involved revisiting some old favorites of mine,
including 1961’s Stranger in a Strange Land by Robert Heinlein. Reread-
ing Stranger has given me an interesting perspective about moving into
your midst.
Now, I am not quite as foreign to you and your customs as Valentine Mi-
chael Smith would have been as a human orphan raised in Martian culture.
He comes as part ambassador, part research scientist, and part jury. As
much as his presence challenges and shapes cultural practices and norms, he
is trying to sort out what it means to be human in this place. I am spending
prayerful energy on sensing what it means to be “pastor” in this place. Like
Smith, I am relying on the stories I hear, the lives I witness, and the experi-
ences I have. And like Smith, I hope that as I am shaped by you, you too
might come to trust and be shaped by me.
Stranger in a Strange Land offers an interesting practice and analogy for
our time together. Because Mars is so arid an environment, there is no more
sacred act than sharing water together. It bonds two individuals together as
“water brothers.” I am mindful of all of the power rituals we share in as
Christians that help us to know one another as brothers and sisters: our own
water ritual of baptism; the sacrament of communion; our public worship
together; our spiritual connection in prayer; and our lived fellowship togeth-
er. These are acts of devotion and sacred gifts one to another. I hope that
you will find ways to share in the “cup” of all of these with me and
SVUMC as we move forward together.
Here’s to hoping that you “grok” what I mean.
Grace and peace,
Pastor Andy

Report from Annual Conference The California-Pacific Annual Conference of the United
Methodist Church, held in Redlands, has just concluded, and all of us
from Simi Valley are catching up on our sleep. Conference is a high-
powered experience, packed with events from early morning till late
at night.
The biggest news for Simi Valley was our change in ministerial
appointment. With the retirement of the Rev. Lew Fry, the Rev.
Andy Mattick was appointed to succeed him.
The retirement service on Saturday night was attended by a host of people from Simi Valley, as Rev.
Fry spoke his allotted three minutes about his years of service. The time is so short because there are many
retirees to speak. After the retirement service, a host of people from Simi enjoyed a reception at a restaurant in
Redlands.
After the ordination service on Sunday afternoon, in which the Rev. Andy Mattick was ordained,
members of Simi Valley UMC gathered around Rev. Mattick and his wife Camille to welcome them to his
new assignment.
The worship services were outstanding, as usual, and emphasized the diversity in our conference.
Voting members of conference include all active and retired ministers and delegates from various
churches and groups. Members are asked to vote on various issues that arise. Simi Valley ministers with the
right to vote were the Rev. Lew Fry, Tom Kendall, Ed McRae, and Frank Witman. Lay people with the right
to vote were Carol Conner, Dave Howe, Joyce Martin, and Martina McRae. Mary Fry had the right to vote
representing the Clergymates. Soli Inoke was a representative from the Santa Barbara District.
One controversial issue that we were asked to vote on was whether to move next year's conference from
Redlands to Pasadena. The issue was tabled till next year, by a very close vote.
We will tell you more in an upcoming Herald.
Respectfully submitted,
Martina McRae

Fall Bible Study Opportunity For to us a child is born, to us a son is
given, and the government will be on his
shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful
Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father,
Prince of Peace.
Even youths grow tired and weary, and
young men stumble and fall; but those who
hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like
eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.
“Come now, let us reason together,” says the LORD. “Though your sins are
like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red as crimson,
they shall be like wool.
All of these Bible quotations are from one of the most familiar prophets in the
Bible. Many of the beloved passages we read and sing each Christmas and
Easter season come from this very same prophet. Who is this biblical writer?
He is Isaiah, the one whose prophecies give us the arresting vision of the Holy
One of Israel and a kaleidoscopic vision of God’s future restoration of Israel
and the world. Isaiah gives us an image of the Messiah who embraces equally
both Israel and the Gentile world. He is the King who rules over the whole
world, the Servant who opens the way for all who will come to the feast and he
is the Conqueror who creates a world free of oppression.
Join us in September for an in-depth study of the Book of Isaiah
led by Rev. Tom Kendall.

Thanks to everyone who helped out with
the UCLA Blood Drive on July 13th.
We were able to collect 27 units of
blood! Way to go SVUMC!
We have always felt loved and cared for by this marvelous congregation. But nothing can compare to your kindness to us during Frank's illness and death! The prayers, calls, visits, food, and welcoming hugs sustained us through very trying times. Your participa-tion in his Celebration of Life and reception buoyed us up tremendously. The entire Church staff, and many volunteers worked tirelessly to help us have a flawless day! Even a rainbow as a finishing touch! Our thanks come with great love.
