ENVIRONMENT

King’s College Doha hosted the annual Earth Week this term from 25th-29th November. Earth Week is intended to teach the next generation how to look after our planet and how to protect the environment. It raises awareness of conservation issues, deforestation and pollution.

Mr McCann organise and ran the event as he is very passionate about the environment and endangered animals.

Earth Week finished with Wear It Wild day where the children and teachers came into school dressed as endangered animals, and everybody’s costumes were amazing! On the day we did lots of fun activities in our Houses such as singing, arts and crafts using recycled

materials and learning about our planet’s animals.

We are supporting the WWF who are a charity which help look after our environment an

endangered animal species, and we are currently sponsoring animals and hope to continue and also add in a new

animal for year 6, I wonder what it could be?! Our current animals are:

Pre-School – Orang-utanReception - GorillaYear 1 - TigerYear 2 - TurtleYear 3 - Polar bearYear 4 - ElephantYear 5 - RhinoYear 6 - ? It’s a surprise!

On 11th November 1918, Armistice was the date that the Allies and the Germans agreed to end the First World War. It came into force at 11am. On that day in London, a huge crowd gathered in front of Buckingham Palace to celebrate the end of the war. Military personnel who die in conflict are commemorated every year on November the 11th - Remembrance Day. This was to show appreciation of these people’s commitment to Britain. The Royal British Legion has adopted the symbol of a poppy, inspired by the war poem ‘In Flanders Fields’. 11th November 2018 is the 100th anniversary of the First World War Armistice. Imagine you are there right now. One hundred years ago people probably would have been celebrating that they have not been bombed and they never will. The anniversary is used to remember all the people who have died in all Wars - not just World War One but World War Two, the Falklands War, the Gulf War, and conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq as well.Remembrance Day (sometimes known informally as Poppy Day) is a memorial day observed in Commonwealth of Nations member states since the end of the First World War to remember the members of their armed forces who have died in the line of duty. This year (2018) all the world’s leaders marched together in Paris.

In Flanders fields the poppies blowBetween the crosses, row on row,

That mark our place; and in the sky The larks, still bravely singing, flyScarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days agoWe lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,

Loved and were loved, and now we lie, In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:To you from failing hands we throw

The torch; be yours to hold it high. If ye break faith with us who die

We shall not sleep, though poppies grow In Flanders fields.

Earth Day was celebrated for the first time on 22nd April 1970 in Philadelphia. The idea behind its celebration was to make people aware of the environmental issues relating to the earth. Keeping in view of the large scope of environmental problems, soon the Earth Day was replaced by Earth Week. Now it is celebrated on 16th till 22nd April. Every year there is a theme for Earth week, this year’s theme was End Plastic Pollution. Earth Day is celebrated everywhere, mostly in the schools. At King’s we celebrated this week (also called Environmental Awareness Week) at the end of November. We also have Earth Hour, created by a society called WWF (World Wildlife Fund), when we close all the lights and computers for a whole hour. In

2019, Earth Hour will be celebrated internationally on Saturday March 30th from 8:30 am till 9:30 am, but we celebrated it At King’s College in November. We turned all the lights off around school and it felt exciting and different, but we also realised that we don’t need to use as much electricity as we do!

Earth Week is an international celebration which we celebrated at King’s College from 25th to 29th of November this year. Earth Week is about taking care of the environment like using the three R’s which are Reduce, Re-use, Recycle. King’s organised activities planned for Earth Day to help children realise how important it is to take care of the environment. All children where asked if they want to go and find reusable plastic bags, bottles and cardboard to gather up as a school and make cool things to take home and enjoy.

King’s turned off all of the lights and electricity for an hour to support the Earth Hour – my lesson at that time was in the gym and it was exciting and different. The future is in our hands!

KING’S CORNER

CULTURE

The Polish Choir, with 37 children from ages 10-17, came from Poland to visit Qatar on 29 October 2018.Interestingly, the choir have toured many countries such as China, India, United States, Dubai, Australia, Croatia and Israel. Here, at King’s College, we had the privilege to listen to some songs like ‘Mamma Mia’ and ‘The way you are’ when they visited King’s College Doha on Sunday 4 November 2018. While they were in Doha, the choir also visited the Museum of Islamic Art and Souq Waqif and camped overnight in the desert.

On December 12th our amazing Year 6 team performed William Shakespeare’s marvellous Macbeth in the atrium! The main role of Macbeth was played by Naufal/Harry and Lady Macbeth was played by Fatima/Heidi. The script was written by Mrs Thandi. We have been practising for at least the last three weeks and have had to memorize our lines. The costumes were designed by Mrs Baldry and have a medieval theme to them. We also did the song ‘How do you murder a king’ from Musical Macbeth and the Scottish and the Norwegian battle song. This story is about a Scottish man named Macbeth who was a strong General of the King. Later his greed gets the better of him and he plans to murder the King and take the throne… There are scenes of the Scottish and Norwegian football match. There are also scenes of Lady

Macbeth and Macbeth arguing about the murder of the King, and Lady Macbeth sleepwalking. This event was gruesome and therefore only suitable for Years 4 and 5 to watch. This was a story of horror, murder, power and ambition, so BEWARE!

Odd Socks Day was celebrated on Monday 12th of November 2018, and it is usually celebrated at schools. Odd Socks Day is celebrated because we are celebrating our unique features and looks. We celebrate Odd Socks Day by wearing Odd Socks and doing activities, like colouring a sock template for example. The school was decorated in special Odd Socks bunting which looked

amazing!Odd Socks Day is celebrated all around the world! It is celebrated in England, Australia, Qatar, UK and Canada. Odd Socks Day is a part of Anti-Bullying Week because it involves making fun of people of how they look (DON’T DO THAT!) but Odd Socks Day makes our looks stand out in a good way and it also makes yourself embrace your body and looks even more.In conclusion, Odd Socks Day is a wonderful day when you just get to be yourself and have an odd day!

During the week of November 11th to November 15th, King’s College Doha held a week called Anti-Bullying Week! We celebrated this week because it’s a week where we all be kind to each other, and try to avoid bullying. It tries to make you treat other people the same way you get treated, and never forgetting to respect one and other.Anti-Bullying Week is a very special week where you care about each other, it’s a week that shows respect. The week also included many exciting events. This year we celebrated Odd Socks Day where all children wore odd socks to show that we are all different and that’s good. We also welcomed a speaker from Conoco Phillips who spoke to us about Micro Aggression and how it’s the little things that count.

Anti-Bullying Week can happen every week if you just be kind to everyone! For more details please visit https://www.kingscollegedoha.com/school-life/pastoral-care/anti-bullying/

Work out the answers and then see if you can find the words!1. What is the capital of Peru?2. What is the capital of Norway?3. What is the capital of Japan?4. What is the capital of Germany?5. What is the capital of Turkey?6. What is the capital of South Korea?7. What is the capital of Uruguay?

On Wednesday 7th November the school hosted a bake sale to raise money for PAWS and our dogs Dax, Layla, Congo, Jonah. We raised an amazing 5625 QR! Also we enjoyed some homemade cakes and cupcakes that were very delicious. Well done bakers! During your lunch time, the School Council, Ambassadors, House Captains, School Monitors and the rest of Year 6 helped to sell cupcakes and many more to the Preschool students. They raised a lot of money.PAWS is a volunteer run organisation that looks after and re-homes stray animals in Qatar. Based on a farm just outside of Doha, PAWS houses over 250 animals. Please visit and adopt a pet!PAWS is mainly focused on re-homing dogs and cats. Weird fact: they also house other animals such as rabbits, hamsters, cows, goats and donkeys. PAWS believes education is the key to preventing animal abuse. There are other rescue centres such as Second Chance Rescue and Qaws where you can walk play and feed the dogs.https://pawsrescueqatar.org/

We are really excited for the opening of the National Museum of Qatar on 28 March 2019 in Doha, Qatar. The Museum is centralized as it is really close to the Corniche. The architect of the museum is Jean Nouvel, a French architect who was inspired by the shape of a desert rose. The museum is built for the citizens of Qatar to explore the glorious history of Qatar and look at the amazing artifacts that show you that what Qatar was that time, and what Qatar is now.

This is appalling! The weather in Qatar I mean. This month and last month it has been raining non-stop! Well almost non- stop.

Getting back, the weather has been very, very awful. Especially the raining and storms and the devastating, terrifying, dangerous flood.Although the weather is known to be unpredictable, global warming has made

it way more unpredictable for the weather forecasters. Global warming is very disastrous, especially for the Arctic and the Antarctic.

Global warming has been destroying the habitat of animals such as polar bears by melting the ice. Future is not bright for them.If you see devastating weather, it’s global warming’s fault!

What is Qatar National Day?Qatar National Day is a day when Qataris celebrate Qatar’s unification that took place in 1878. It is celebrated annually on 18th December. The Holiday was established by a 21st June 2007 decree of the then Crown Prince and heir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani. It is also known as Founder’s Day.

What happens on Qatar National DayOn Qatar National Day there are lots of activities including a fireworks show, which includes music, lights and fireworks on the Corniche in Doha.In Katara there are festivals and over 20 heritage themed events are held at Katara cultural village. What will happen on Qatar National Day in King’s. Last year in King’s we had a Majlis in the atrium, and activities including origami, face painting, making Qatar flags and we got to see a real falcon! Also, we wore Qatar National clothes e.g. thobe and abaya. We were able to achieve these things with our excellent

teachers and of course the Friends of King’s College. We are looking forward to celebrating Qatar National Day and we hope we have all the fun activities again this year.
