While there was a fantastic turnout of stall holders for the Malvern Expo held on Saturday October 3rd at the Darfield Recreation Centre, organisers were a little disappointed at the public attendance. The Expo, organised by the Malvern Community Board, showcased local groups and organisations, giving those attending an insight into everything the area has to offer. A wide variety of groups were on hand and these ranged from a selection of sports Clubs, through to arts, crafts and hobby groups. Chairperson of the Malvern Community Board, Jenny Jenny Jenny Jenny Gallagher Gallagher Gallagher Gallagher who assisted with the e v e n t ’ s o r g a n i s a t i o n commented, “there weren’t quite as many members of the public in attendance, as we had anticipated, but the feedback from those who came along was exceptionally good.” Jenny added that it was likely that there would be another Expo, but that it perhaps wouldn’t be an annual event. “We would think about holding one maybe every two to three years. We are aware that there were numerous other activities taking

place in and around the district on Expo day and this may well have affected the attendance. We should also consider changing the Expo timing in future, so as to fit between the sports seasons. Most summer sports registrations had already taken place and competition games begun,” Jenny said.

Despite the turnout being low, probably due to sporting commitments, there was lots of information available and a great day was had by all.

A testimonial from one Snow Culture Tour client: A testimonial from one Snow Culture Tour client: A testimonial from one Snow Culture Tour client: A testimonial from one Snow Culture Tour client: “They gave us such a wonderful insight into Japan. It wasn't until we arrived home and had time to draw breath that I

realised just how much we had seen, done and experienced, in such a short time. From our day in Tokyo, the fish market, the wonderful skiing, the bath houses, the food, the list just goes on and on. The whole trip was just such a wonderful experience and the memories will last indefinitely. Of course

Rene’s knowledge of Japan and interaction with the Japanese was certainly impressive and he definitely made

our trip the wonderful experience that it was.”

Rene Kelly going deep in Hokkaido.

Darfield’s Rene Kelly Rene Kelly Rene Kelly Rene Kelly is the face behind Snow Culture Tours. His company gives skiers an authentic Japanese experience, with world famous powder skiing, delicious food, amazing hot springs and a focus on cultural interactions with the locals. Rene, who lives in Darfield with his wife, NaokoNaokoNaokoNaoko (who also assists in the business) and their three children (who attend Darfield Preschool, Primary and High Schools) personally escorts all the tours run by Snow Culture. Rene, who studied Japanese from the age of thirteen continuing this at University, had his first experience in Japan in 1993, where he fell under the spell of all that that country has to offer. It was there that he was to meet his future wife and become a fluent speaker, reader and writer of Japanese. Rene integrated his love of skiing with

his passion for all things Japanese and undertook a number of roles within the tourism industry, both in New Zealand and Japan. Rene has worked locally, both in-store at Gnomes Alpine Sports, as well as for Black Diamond Safaris, showing Japanese tourists around the Club ski areas of Selwyn. He has also been a tour guide in Japan. “I have lost count of how many times I have been back and forth between New Zealand and Japan since 1993, what with chasing after my wife and deep powder snow,” Rene added with a laugh. Rene is especially happy to be able to offer his personal guided tour experience to Malvern News locals for a very special price, but only for a limited time. His tours are open and suitable for all ages and abilities. Guests spend at least one day in Tokyo then stay at three different ski destinations and experience four ski areas. Having spent four years working for a ski school in Japan Rene is happy to provide coaching and advice, “it is amazing how far you can progress with a solid week or

more on skis and a little coaching each day,” he commented. Focussing on culture and a true Japanese experience the accommodation offered is traditional; sleeping on futons and tatami mats, bathing in the in-house hot spring baths and eating amazing kaiseki dinners. The tour spends at least one day in Tokyo, the world’s most populated city and Rene’s extensive contacts in Japan enable him to arrange tours and sightseeing often not freely available. “We generally undertake lots of interaction with the locals and there’s often a lot of sake and karaoke too,” Rene smiled. An eleven day, ten night Snow Culture package includes: Accommodation, all breakfasts and six dinners, seven days lift passes at four different ski areas, as well as all transport and transfers within Japan. There is a maximum of ten persons per tour and a minimum of six required. Serendipity is a group of like-minded people who have come together to share their acting experience for the enjoyment of the community. All, with two exceptions, have been, or currently are, members of Kirwee Players, some with many shows under their belt. To give them and the audience the chance to be involved in a community drama production that wasn’t a musical was an opportunity not to be missed. In the last week of term Greendale School performed a play written by Yr 6 student Millie AdamsMillie AdamsMillie AdamsMillie Adams. The keen writer scripted a story, from a collaborative class plan, about three New Zealand families and three Australian families whose husbands fought in WW1. It showed how the families got together for dances to keep their spirits high, received

letters from their loved ones (one of which was a real letter from a pupil’s great, great, Grandfather) and waited for many long years after initially thinking their husbands would only be away for a short time. All the featured husbands returned, which made for a lovely ending. All the Greendale children had a part to play and it was well

supported by families and the community. There was much music throughout, sung by the children and accompanied by Liz Nichol Liz Nichol Liz Nichol Liz Nichol on the guitar. Music such as Pokarekare Ana, Waltzing Matilda, Lilli Marlene, Pack Up Your Troubles and It’s A Long Way To Tipperary, as well as Welcome Home by Dave Dave Dave Dave Dobbyn.Dobbyn.Dobbyn.Dobbyn.

Plans are well underway for the celebration of Darfield High School’s 65th Jubilee, which will take place on Saturday, February 27th, 2016. It’s a wonderful chance to catch-up with old friends and neighbours and re-live time at the School. Those attending can enjoy a tour of the school between 4pm and 6pm, followed by Pre Dinner Drinks until 7pm, and a BYO Celebratory Dinner. From small beginnings, forty four first day pupils presented themselves for instruction on that eventful February day in 1951. They studied in a small,

unpretentious building, adrift on a waving sea of Browntop, not a tree in sight, no sign of a rugby field or a basketball court. In later years Darfield has become one of the important Canterbury rural high schools translating to full High School status in 1962. The district between the Rivers can be proud of Darfield High School for its achievements over the 65 years of its existence, providing an environment in which each student is supported in their quest to gain the knowledge,

skills and attitudes for successful and confident living. Currently 750 students study a variety of subjects at Darfield High School. Expressions of interest and Registration to attend are invited from ex-Students, Former and Present Staff and all Associates of the School. These can be made through the darfield.school.nz website.

Singles and smaller groups will of course be welcomed too, to join in the fun. As well as all the entertainment on offer, a group of DHS girls have bravely volunteered to model their ball gowns from this year’s formal. Charing Cross Red Cross members will be providing supper throughout the evening and they already have great plans to decorate the hall with some exciting floral displays. Darfield High School PTSA will operate a licensed bar throughout the evening and there will be great music too. All funds raised from ticket sales will go to help the work of New Zealand Red Cross with new refugees. They are the country’s primary resettlement agency and help to resettle around 750 new refugees in New Zealand every year. Social workers, employment specialists and volunteers work with refugees when they arrive in their new

communities to help them make the transition to life in New Zealand an easier one.

On January 24th 2015, Darfield’s Dean Syme Dean Syme Dean Syme Dean Syme was scuba diving at the Akaroa Heads when he encountered difficulty. Brian FranksBrian FranksBrian FranksBrian Franks and his dive team immediately administered life saving oxygen and transferred Dean to land. It was from here that Dean was airlifted to Christchurch hospital where he spent six weeks in a coma, reliant on a breathing ventilator. He had extensive brain damage caused by cerebral gas embolisms which travelled through a previously unknown PFO hole in his heart. Despite the odds. Dean came out of the coma with severe mobility issues, but no cognitive impairment. No one is more

grateful to the rescue services than Dean’s wife, Sara Syme Sara Syme Sara Syme Sara Syme (a teacher at Darfield’s Preschool & Nursery). “I thank God every day, for allowing Dean to live when medical professionals expected him not to, and for all the people who were there to help Dean (and his family!) in the darkest hours,“ Sara said. It is this gratitude that inspired the idea of raising funds for the Westpac Air Rescue Team. Sara has organised a walk, “to thank and honour all of those people and organisations that have helped us, as well as to raise funds for the Canterbury Westpac Air Rescue helicopters; because without that service, it's a really long walk to the

hospital! “The route has been finalised, it's 76 kilometres and will take an estimated sixteen hours!” Dean has been learning to walk again over the past eight months and his positive attitude and amazing determination has accelerated his recovery. He is determined to get back to 100%, but his recovery is not yet complete. Sara will be joined by Dean’s mum, AlisonAlisonAlisonAlison and other family and friends to walk from Akaroa to Hagley Park, Christchurch. Dean will be joining them for some sections and will lead the support team, as he is not yet fit enough to walk the whole distance. If any business or individual is able to assist with the costs of the walk and its promotion, Sarah would love to hear about it. This year’s Malvern Rep Pool Team was selected based on the highest singles’ scores during the season. The determined team travelled to Kaiapoi to play the current holders of the Rangiora Kaiapoi Pool Association (RKPA)/Malvern trophy. The battle was to be the best of three, played both at home and away. Malvern took an early lead with

game one, winning 15-10. Darfield Hotel hosted RKPA for game two and after some amazing pool playing by both teams, RKPA took the glory by one game. With both teams having even scores and now neck and neck, a third deciding game was required to find the champions. Malvern returned to Kaiapoi for the final and a tense match resulted in Malvern finally emerging victorious and taking the final 13-12. This enabled

To honour aging and in recognition of the International Day of the Older Person on October 1st, Westmar Senior Care in Darfield held a much-enjoyed, celebratory ‘High Tea’. Throughout the world a demographic revolution is currently underway. Today, world-wide, there are around 600 million persons aged sixty years and over; this total will double by 2025 and will reach virtually two billion by 2050 - the vast majority of them in the developing world. The Westmar ‘High Tea’ to embrace aging positively, went extremely well with staff and

residents all enjoying a particularly yummy morning repast. Largely organised by Genny Genny Genny Genny GumleyGumleyGumleyGumley, Westmar’s Diversional Therapist, the event was decorated with beautiful spring flowers, the best china was rolled out, and of course there was home baking provided by staff and family members for all to enjoy. “Often we focus on the negative aspects of aging so it’s good to celebrate aging in a positive way,” commented Robyn Robyn Robyn Robyn MacklinMacklinMacklinMacklin, Nurse and staff member at Westmar Senior Care.

Selwyn MP Amy Adams Amy Adams Amy Adams Amy Adams is encouraging local youth with bright ideas to apply for a share of the $120,000 Opportunity for Young People fund. “The funding will be awarded to young people aged between 12 – 24 years with clever and achievable ideas that will make a social or environmental difference,” Amy said. Amy stated that funding would be awarded based on the innovation, viability, potential for growth and social impact of the project, while also considering value for money. “This fund inspires youth to apply a commercial approach to solving social or environmental challenges - a way of thinking that is vital to the future of New Zealand,” Amy added. “Young

people who solve community problems with innovative and entrepreneurial thinking are well placed for future leadership roles.” “By working on projects they have designed, young people develop valuable decision-making skills and confidence,” Amy said. The Opportunities for Young People funding comes from the $2 million Government Youth Enterprise Fund launched in December last year. Interest for this round of funding must be registered by October 20th 2015. The Darfield Bowling Club is now two weeks into its new season having held a successful Opening Day for its members - including several new members - on Saturday, September 26th. On Sunday, September 27th, the Men held their annual clash with the Riccarton Racecourse Club and had a four games to one, victory over their rivals. Last Saturday the Club had another outing playing the annually held event against the West Melton Club and ran out

narrow winners by 8½ to 7½. This coming weekend sees the beginning of Bowls Canterbury Interclub Competition with the Darfield Men entering two Sevens teams and a Two Fours team, while the Ladies have entered a Fives Team in the weekly competition. Things coming up of note for the Darfield Bowling Club are their popular ‘Quiz Night’ which will be held on Friday, October 16th, with the well known Banks Peninsula identity Bob Maisfield Bob Maisfield Bob Maisfield Bob Maisfield

as its Quiz Master once again. Anyone wishing to enter a team in this Quiz can ring John John John John Anderson Anderson Anderson Anderson - a good night’s entertainment is assured. Another event coming soon on the Bowling calendar is ‘Student Bowls Day’ to be held on Oc tober 21st a t 2pm. Enquiries about this event can be made to: • Steve Mitchell Steve Mitchell Steve Mitchell Steve Mitchell 318 8193 • Russell Green Russell Green Russell Green Russell Green 318 8657 • or Darfield High School.

Kirwee Bowling Club members and curious newcomers enjoy the calm before the storm at have-a-go day.

Members of the Kirwee Bowling Club had been busy preparing for their Have-a-Go Day last Sunday, October 4th. However when the day dawned forecasts started coming in for gale force nor’westers, predicted to make their way up the South Island. Blustering winds are not the best conditions for bowls and the organisers suspected they might be forced

indoors. However, conditions were settled in the early afternoon and perfect calm prevailed for the first hour of the ‘open house’, making it a great welcome for visitors. Approximately fifteen people came along to find out what lawn bowls was all about, bringing with them a mixture of enthusiasm and curiosity. While some struggled even to get the

hang of the bowl delivery, one rather competitive pair of males (who will remain nameless!) progressed to the point of being able to knock the kitty clear off the green! The gusty nor’west returned later in the afternoon, adding to the challenge and frustration, so it was a welcome sound when the bell rang for time and everyone went inside for a debrief over tea and biscuits. It was generally agreed that the event was extremely successful, and the Club would like to thank all those who came along to support it. The Club is keen to acknowledge Bowls Canterbury for its support in providing a promotional trailer full of gear that they were able to use for the day, and also at the Malvern Expo on the Saturday preceding it.

Alex Bruce of Adelphi Distillery Ltd has been

announced as the Cheftain of the 2015 Hororata Highland Games.

The 2015 Hororata Highland Games Chieftain is an authentic Scot with royal connections. Alex BruceAlex BruceAlex BruceAlex Bruce, Managing Director of Adelphi Distillery Ltd, the finest independent bottler of single cask Scotch whisky, has been appointed Chieftain for the event to be held on November 7th, 2015 at the Hororata Domain. Whisky is in Alex's blood. His mother, an Usher, is a direct descendant of Andrew Usher Andrew Usher Andrew Usher Andrew Usher who is credited with pioneering blended whisky, and his father, Lord ElginLord ElginLord ElginLord Elgin, is a patron and former Grand Master of the Keepers of the Quaich. He is also a direct descendant of King Robert the BruceRobert the BruceRobert the BruceRobert the Bruce. “I am truly honoured to have been asked to be the Chieftain of the Hororata Highland Games 2015. I first visited Hororata, as a travelling student, in the early 1990’s, and then again just before and after the devastating earthquake of 2010. The work of the Hororata Community Trust has been immense and inspirational, and I was especially delighted to hear of the inaugural Highland Games in 2011,” explained Alex. “Many believe that Highland Games provided the Chieftain with a chance to select the fittest, most musical and entertaining from within the clan or family to challenge the rival clans, but they were also founded as celebrations of success in battle. The village of Ceres in Fife (Scotland), not far from where I live, received the charter to hold its Games from my ancestor, Robert the Bruce, immediately after their bowman had helped defeat the English army at the Batt le of Bannockburn in 1314. There has been a Games there every year since, except those of

conflict. I hope that the Hororata Games will still be going strong in 701 years as well, and that the visitors and spectators continue to enjoy the tradition as much as the competitors themselves.” Alex, along with local Michael Michael Michael Michael FraserFraserFraserFraser----Milne Milne Milne Milne from Whisky Galore, has worked with the Hororata Community Trust producing the Hororata Whisky label since 2011. Adelphi Distillery bottles the Hororata Whisky, of which three single malts and a fine blend have been imported under the label. The 2015 premium Hororata Whisky has been personally selected by Alex and wil l be labelled as the ‘Chieftain’s Choice’. The Hororata Whisky will be available from the Whisky Galore stall at the Games and then through their store. “The whisky is a combination of just a few ex-Sherry casks of Scotch malt whisky from distilleries in the Highlands and Islands. Mellow, with dark fruits, a great mouth texture and lingering finish. 2015 also marks the Year of Food and Drink in Scotland, and you won’t find a better excuse than that for trying a wee dram on the day, responsibly of course,” concluded Alex.

On November 1st, Selwyn will host the first garden tour of its kind in many years. Several private gardens will be abuzz with activity. The tour has come about as a result of a fundraising think-tank on behalf of the Ellesmere College 1st XV Rugby Team. The garden tour is within the Dunsandel, Leeston and Southbridge areas and can be completed in any order throughout the day; visitors can do as much, or as little, as they prefer. The tour will see visitors meandering through various sized gardens; ranging from the average section, making the most of space and light, through to gardens boasting three to five acres of plants, trails, history and enchantment. To complement the garden tour, there is a country market set up at one of the gardens - a great opportunity to get some C h r i s t m a s s h o p p i n g completed early, as well as enjoy some refreshments. Ellesmere College have two rugby teams and two netball teams travelling to Sydney in April 2016. All funds raised during the day will be used to support the 1st XV Rugby team in their fundraising efforts for this trip. Further information can be found on the Selwyn Spring Garden Tour Facebook page.

The blonde woman desperately wanted a pair of beauful alligator shoes.

AAer becoming very frustrated with the atude of one of

the shopkeepers, the young blonde declared, “well then,

maybe I'll just go out and catch my own alligator and get a

pair of alligator shoes for free!”

The shopkeeper replied with a sly smile, “well liDle lady,

why don't you go give it a try?”

The blonde headed off to the swamp, determined to catch

an alligator.

Later in the day, the shopkeeper was driving home, and

spoDed the young woman standing waist deep in the murky

water, shotgun in hand. He saw a huge 9-foot gator

swimming rapidly toward her. With lightning reflexes, the

blonde took aim, shot the creature and hauled it up onto

the slippery bank.

Nearby were seven more dead 'gators, all lying belly up. The

shopkeeper watched in amazement as the blond struggled

with the 'gator. Then, rolling her eyes, she screamed in

frustraon ......

“DAMN !! THIS ONE'S BAREFOOT TOO!"
