50th CELEBRATION

This term has started with an excited flurry of activity and celebration. Anyone who was here at school with us on Saturday October 12 would agree that our 50th Anniversary was a spectacular success. The feeling of community pride and spirit was absolutely palpable. It was always going to be an important event, as celebrating 50 years of outstanding service to the Essendon community is special indeed. We should all feel pleased and proud with how the day unfolded. We had displays of memorabilia in the library where past students and staff chatted together and reflected on memories of many years. We had food stalls, shops, calisthenics and judo displays, rides, activities for kids and of course, many displays of the talents of our current student and teachers. From the Devonshire tea area, through to the Notable Year 7s in A-block and on to the jumping castle on the grassed area, we were overwhelmed with the amount of people who joined us on the day, and we were truly lucky with the sun shining on us all day too. On behalf of all of us at school, my sincere thanks to the students, families and staff who helped out on the day. There are too many people to thank individually, but please know that your work was appreciated. Thank you to Louise Gaynor and Richard Jones who formed a dynamic team to bring the event to life. Thank you both. As well as reflecting on the past, for me the 50thAnniversary celebration is also a time to plan for the future; for the next 50 years. We are in a great position to step into the future with confidence and anticipation. It’s significant that while we celebrate the past 50 years, we are also setting a path forward. As you’re reading this newsletter, I’m so pleased to say that the following future-focused projects are taking shape:

we’re launching our new, more interactive website

we’re explaining our new Bring Your Own Device computer policy to you to ensure that every student at our school has access to their own computer each day they are at school

we’ve launched the Jubilee Theatre Fund, Building for the Next 50 Years

Our new College website will become a much more important form of communication with you as we move into 2014. It’s in its early iteration, but as we evolve it more and more, we plan to talk to you about what forms of communication work best for you. We plan to keep our website regularly updated with news and stories from BPC, rather than wait for the bi-termly newsletter as much. In today’s world, it’s vital that our communication methods are current and responsive to what families want and need. More on this as we begin 2014. I’m delighted that we’ve now also launched our Jubilee Theatre Fund. This fundraising effort aims to raise $1million to build our school and community a much-needed theatre facility. Please consider supporting this fund and encourage your friends and business connections to consider it too. All donations are tax deductible. The next stage in the process is some concept drawings as we begin the journey to a build in 2015. Last week was a week of celebration too as we farewelled our Year 12 class of 2013. Our general assembly on Wednesday was

a celebration of what makes Buckley Park College such a great school: our students. Always at our assemblies we celebrate their successes and the many different ways that students at our school do well. Whether it’s through the arts, sport, and technology or with outstanding VCE and VCAL results, BPC is a showcase of the amazing talents our students. On Wednesday we focussed on our Year 12 students and their achievements. It was a celebration of their 6 years of schooling, a reward for a tough year, and the start of the final chapter in their schooling story, which now awaits. On behalf of the whole of the Buckley Park College community, I congratulate our Year 12 students. Making it to this point is a huge achievement and I know that the work their teachers and them have put in this year will bring real rewards with their VCE and VCAL examination results. I’ve been lucky enough to get to know some of the Year 12 students over this past year and have seen how hard they’ve worked for the prize ahead. I’ve also been lucky enough to learn more about them as people, not just students of a school. I’ve heard on a daily basis the kind and considerate way that they approach life at Buckley Park. I see and hear the positive, well-mannered way that they interact with other students and teachers. It’s noticed and it matters, very much. These human traits that aren’t found within the pages of a textbook are the ones that will set them apart from the rest; these are the ones that will make them a force to be reckoned with at university, at work, at TAFE and in the world. People who possess these very real and important qualities do better in life than those who don’t. It’s a fact. As graduates of Buckley Park College, I know our students have had the opportunity to develop these important life-long skills. They have built their wings and now they’re ready to fly. I want to thank and acknowledge the extraordinary input of our College Captains, Luis and Maroushka throughout this past year. Luis and Maroushka have embodied all that is good about our school; they have committed themselves fully to their studies and have done exceptionally well, but they have also contributed fully to the life of the school in many, many ways. Most importantly they have been an ongoing presence and influence for positivity, for passion and for sincere kindness to others. School leadership is a real challenge and this year Luis and Maroushka, and all of our other student leaders, have risen to the challenge of leadership and set the bar high for years to come. To our Year 11 students, I say, please consider applying for College leadership positions for 2014. You have seen this year how important the roles are for us and what a difference the right people make. Congratulations and good luck to the Year 12 class of 2013! This is your chance to shine. BRING YOUR OWN DEVICE 2014 At Buckley Park College we believe that today’s students think, connect and communicate differently to students who were at school even a few years ago. We are aware that our students live in a world where information can be accessed and shared quickly over the Internet, where they can communicate with peers and create new knowledge.

We encourage our students to strive for excellence through our learning programs that integrate the curriculum and fully utilise Information and Communication Technology (ICT).

In 2014 our College ICT policy strategy will look as follows. We believe this will ensure that all students have access to the ICT tools that will assist them to gain the skills necessary to succeed in such a technology-rich world.

The recommend device for 2014 is one of a range: we know some students like working with tablets and we want to utilise their enthusiasm and interest. Equally this applies to netbooks and other devices.

CURICULUM DEVELOPMENT- Year 9 CIVIC Project

This project is an improvement upon the City Project. It incorporates a guided exploration of our school values and how these can be exhibited through the activities of organisations.

CIVIC (Collaborative Investigation of Values In our Community), for all Year 9 students CIVIC during Term 4 2013, will engage our students in a meaningful, pro-active, and collaborative learning experience. In brief, the program will include: -An intensive learning unit where students will be placed in small working teams. Students will undertake a deeper exploration of our school values and the representation of these values on a local, national and global level. Students will develop their understanding of key concepts, data collection and analysis, alongside practical skills such as team decision-making and effective work allocation/time management strategies -Guided excursions over a three week period which will incorporate a range of community oriented organisations around Melbourne, student led data collection and research throughout the CBD, as well as classroom based planning, reflection and portfolio development -A presentation evening (involving community guest adjudicators, staff, parents, SRC representatives and our very own Buckley Buzz student journalists) where each student team will present their CIVIC portfolio and promote their own values-based goals proposal for consideration at BPC

LOST PROPERTY

I would like to ask students, parents and guardians to please label all students’ belongings. Books, jumpers, sporting gear and anything else that can be misplaced. Lost items can be returned to their owners if they are labelled. Surname is preferable. As the end of the year is fast approaching it is a good idea to come and look for any lost items as unclaimed items will be donated to charity before the start of the 2014 school year. Many Thanks Kerry Wyatt Lost Property Co-ordinator

The careers calendar continues to be very busy with students preparing for work experience in 2014, finalising VCE subject selection and preparing for the transition to the tertiary sector, work or other endeavours.

Year 9 From Monday 2 - 6 December year 9 students will be involved in the Preparation for Work Experience Program. The workshop activities planned should stand students in good stead to organise their work experience placement over the summer holidays. Work experience for students participating in the Gold Coast camp is from 23 - 27 June and 16 – 20 June for students on the Central Australia camp. Students not participating in either camp are required to complete two weeks of work experience.

Year 10 & 11 Students in Years 10 and 11 who require assistance with career pathways or further discussion relating to VCE subject selection are encouraged to see me. The careers library has a variety of resources that can assist students with these important decisions.

Year 12 Students who did not make a timely application to VTAC are still able to apply until 6 December however a very late application fee will be charged. VCE results will be available online or via SMS on Monday 16 December. VTAC will accept change of preference and other details until 23 December (12 noon). It is important that VTAC are aware of any change in personal details. Students should ensure that they fully understand the pathway options available and are encouraged to see me if assistance is required when changing preferences or pathways. University, TAFE and VTAC websites are valuable sources of information during this time.

Finally, I wish Year 12 students all the very best as they prepare for final exams and commence the next phase of their career journey. Please contact me at the college should you have any queries relating to career pathways.

ATTENTION VCE/VCAL STUDENTS AND PARENTS We would like to bring your attention to a fantastic resource built for young people in our Region. The Maribyrnong and Moonee Valley LLEN have created a youth specific jobs website "JobCraft Talent Community" found at www.jobcraft.com.au.

JobCraft connects young people to entry level employment, alternative education opportunities and further support as required. Continually displaying between 500 and 600 entry-level jobs, this resource offers maximum benefit to our local young people. We encourage parents and young people to join by selecting the "join this community" button at the home page of www.jobcraft.com.au. More information is available at the website.

The German Club Film Festival on Friday the 18th of October was a big success again this year. The theme is set by the Goethe Insitut each year for the Australia-wide Student German Film Competition. This year’s theme was “JugendCoolTour” (Youth Culture). Danke to everyone who participated and helped and to all students who created a German film – making the whole event possible. A special thanks to 7HN for their performance of “Ode to Joy” by Beethoven and for the technical team who made everything run smoothly. Displays and films were run by David Shoben of Year 10 and Nicholas Zuccarelli of Year 11. Lighting was by Will Kelcey of Year 9 and DJ Anton Strunz of Year 9 provided entertainment. Danke also to all those who baked and made the “Kaffee und Kuchen” for the Deutschklub and guests so special. Brydie Siryj and Tayla Fordham of Year 10 gave a talk about Youth in Germany and Luke Iannello and Anastasia Vassiliadis of Year 11 gave a talk on the pitfalls of Google Translator. The winners were chosen by a panel of judges from last year’s Year 12 German Club members; Melanie Basta, Alice Zeng, Emily Rutherford, James Bashford and Tobias Gustavsson. There were nineteen films selected for the competition and all were creative and entertaining and the judges had a hard time deciding between them. The Year 11 films “Die gefährliche Party” by Victoria Cottee, Najat Mattar, Christine Evans and Vicky Komninos and “Träume“ by Nicholas Zuccarelli, Julie Hercus and Donna Huang received special mentions, as did the Year 10 film “Filmpark Babelsberg” by Gia Thuy Do. ID Card Reminder

All students should keep their 2013 ID card for use next year. New cards will only be issued after the official school photos have been taken

during Term 1, 2014. The card is needed to borrow from the Library and use the coloured photocopier/printer.

Photography Competition Display

The entries in the Photo Competition are currently on display in the Library foyer. The photographs cover a variety of subjects including

landscape, cityscape, portraits, people, animals and still life.

50 Years Library Display

The historic display in the Library for the 50 years celebration festival was popular with former and current students alike. Former students spent

time on the day looking through old copies of the school magazine Benalta. They were also pleased to learn that it was it was still being

published. Our current students have been amused by the changes to uniform and hairstyles over the 50 years.

Chess Competition

The final of Chess Competition was held on Monday 21st October. James Ives of year 8 defeated Nithin Sony of year 12 in the final play-off. The

competition, which was held during Term 3 was very popular with students, both competitors and audience alike.

Parents are reminded that students are expected to be in full school uniform until the end of the year. In 2014, a Buckley Park College school jacket will be introduced through the uniform shop. A lengthy process, culminating with approval from school council, has been undertaken to ensure that the jacket will cater to the needs of the students and the school. The jacket will replace the plain black jacket which students are currently able to wear over their school jumper. Students will have the choice of wearing the school jumper, the school jacket or both. The jacket will be phased in over the next two years. Whilst it would be hoped that all students will wear the jacket from the introduction, it will be the only jacket that is acceptable for year 7 students in 2014 and for all students in 2015 and onwards. Can you help in the Canteen?

The school’s canteen is a very important service to students and staff. It is only able to operate because of the commitment and dedication of our volunteers.

The canteen is a busy, friendly, work place and even if you don’t feel that you could serve the counter or handle money, there are plenty of things to do that would be of great assistance.

We would love you to call in and see for yourself just how important the canteen is to the school community. All profits from the canteen go to the school to provide facilities for our students.

So if you have a spare few hours once a month or once a term, we would love to hear from you.
