Your Minnesota legislators are holding public hearings on a bill that will prohibit homeowners from asking residential contractorsfor help identifying storm damage when settling their insuranceclaim until after the insurance company approves a claim. A hearingon the bill (HF2553 in the House and SF2137 in the Senate) was held Tuesday, March 6th at 2:30 p.m. before the Commerce andRegulatory Reform Committee. The bill was introduced by thecommittee chair, Representative Hoppe. Supported by, and likely drafted by the Insurance Federationof Minnesota, testimony in support of the bill through its president Bob Johnson and one witness, independent insurance agent Ken Ohlfrom Spicer Minnesota, revolved around the fact that Minnesotahas become a state with one of the highest total weather relatedinsurance claim losses in the nation. The cause is the weather andinsurers are bleeding red ink paying out these claims. Their solution;raise insurance premiums and deductibles for policy holders plus prohibit contractors from speaking with any insurance companyrepresentative until after a claim has been accepted by the insurer.Essentially muzzle the contractors! Fortunately, and as a result of testimony from exteriorcontractors at this first hearing, the original bill was amended. Theamendment removed the provision that would allow for insurancepremium and deductible increases to insureds that have filed a claim,and the bill was re-identified as a “weather-related claims practices”matter rather than a “wealth-related claims practices” matter. (Whythat misidentification happened is still questionable) The part aboutmuzzling contractors remained intact. In summary, contractors wona battle to help Minnesota consumers; however, the war continues. These are clearly unwelcome changes proposed andchampioned by the insurance lobby. This bill is an attack onhomeowners by the Insurance Federation and on the efforts ofexterior contractors, lead by the Minnesota Association of ExteriorSpecialists (MnAES) to work on behalf of Minnesota homeowners. Contractors assist homeowners affected by storm damageto keep insurance adjusters honest by identifying all of the damageto the home. In nearly every past case, an insurance adjuster’s initialscope and price for storm damage repair work is incomplete, and theprofessional eye of a renovation contractor is needed to complete theclaim. The remaining bill is attempting to prevent that free servicefrom being available, and is an attack by insurers on contractors.Should it become law it will have a major impact on the constructionindustry and on homeowners in Minnesota. Given the bipartisansupport for the revised bill, its becoming law is very likely. If you’ve ever had a storm damage claim that wasunderestimated by your insurance company and then made completeonly with the help of an experienced exterior contractor you knowhow important their service is and you should attend these hearings. If you are not able to attend further hearings, contact your elected representatives to make certain your voice is heard. ■ On March 17, 1901, paintings by the late Dutch painter Vincent van

Gogh are shown in Paris. Van Gogh had committed suicide 11 years earlier without any notion that his work was destined to win acclaim beyond his wildest dreams. In his lifetime, he had sold only one painting.

■ On March 14, 1914, stock-car racer Lee Arnold Petty (father of Richard Petty) is born near Randleman, N.C. In 1959, he won the Daytona 500. It’s said that Lee Petty never lost a race on account of being too kind to his competitors, even if his competitors were family.

■ On March 13, 1942, the Quartermaster Corps of the United States Army begins

training dogs for the newly established War Dog Program, or “K-9 Corps.” Perhaps the most famous war dog was Rin Tin Tin, an abandoned puppy of German war dogs found in France in 1918 and taken to the United States, where he made his fi lm debut in the 1922 silent fi lm “The Man From Hell’s River.”

■ On March 15, 1954, the Chords record “Sh-boom.” The song’s lighthearted melody and nonsensical lyrics kicked off a new era of “doo-wop” music. Doo-wop hits included “Earth Angel” by the Penguins and “In the Still of the Night” by the Five Satins.

■ On March 12, 1969, the London drug squad appears at house of George Harrison and Pattie Boyd with a warrant and drug-sniffi ng canines. Sergeant Pilcher, the man behind the raid, was later convicted of

planting drugs in other cases and went to jail in 1972.

■ On March 25, 1911, at the Triangle Shirtwaist Company in New York’s Lower East Side, a fi re quickly engulfs the factory and claims 146 lives, mostly young women. Because management had locked the exit doors, many of the garment workers either expired from asphyxiation or leapt from windows -- a fatal, 10-story fall. The factory’s owners were eventually found guilty on charges of manslaughter.

■ On March 20, 1920, Bugatti delivers its fi rst 16-valve car to a customer in Switzerland. The Bugatti was a symbol of wealth and status, and its cars were equipped with massive racing engines. The renowned American dancer Isadora Duncan was riding in a Bugatti when her trademark long scarf caught in a rear

wheel of the vehicle, and she was instantly strangled to death.

■ On March 19, 1952, the one-millionth Jeep is produced. The name “Jeep” is reportedly derived from the Army’s 1941 request that car manufacturers develop a “General Purpose” vehicle. “G.P.” turned to “Jeep” somewhere along the battle lines.

■ On March 24, 1989, the worst oil spill in U.S. territory begins when the supertanker Exxon Valdez runs aground on a reef in Prince William Sound in Alaska. An estimated 11 million gallons of oil eventually spilled into the water, polluting more than 700 miles of coastline.

• For Takuo Toda, chairman of the Japan Origami Airplane Association, breaking the “Longest Paper Airplane Flight” record with his time of 27.9 seconds was the culmination of an 11-year scientifi c effort. In April of 2009, Toda fi nally reached his goal when he turned a sheet of light sugarcane into a 10-cm craft that stayed aloft for almost 30 seconds. Toda’s model bore a striking resemblance to a NASA space shuttle that he recalled watching three decades before, yet Toda claims that his design actually preceded NASA’s by three or four years. In 1980, he began lobbying for a proposal to launch paper darts from the International Space Station, and in 2008, the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency announced a three-year, 90 million yen (over 1.1 million U.S. dollars) study of that very thing. Though it may sound frivolous on its surface, the research could yield valuable information on how future spacecraft may be lighter and more aerodynamic. The next time your co-worker teases you for making paper airplanes, tell him you’re doing it for science!• American Ashrita Furman presently holds 113 places of distinction within the “Guinness Book of World Records.” Nicknamed “Mr. Versatility,” Furman has set more than 340 records since 1979 in 35 countries on each of the world’s continents. In 2010, he sprinted his way into history with the aid of something generally reserved for the water — a pair of black and blue swim fi ns. He ran a mile (in fi ns) in 7 minutes, 56 seconds. In addition to breaking the “eight minute land swim fi n mile” (a phrase that we are hoping to popularize), Furman’s accomplishment made him the current record holder for holding current records (the aforementioned 113). • Breaking the “World’s Fastest Furniture” record, a lounge chair created by a design group from the United Kingdom was clocked at 87 miles per hour, well over the speed limit on nearly every highway in the world. Couch potatoes with a need for speed need look no further than the “Casual Lofa” (as its creators Cummfy Banana have deemed it), which has an actual vehicle license with the British Ministry of

Transportation. In addition to its plush, leopard-patterned upholstery, the “Lofa” features the same unleaded A-series engine found in the Cooper Mini, along with a steering wheel that doubles as a pizza pan, a hand-operated brake and a throttle that can be operated with the feet up or down. In addition to its performance-driving chair, the company has also built a bed on wheels called the “Street Sleeper” that can go 69 miles per hour and a zooming tub (the “Bog Standard”) that can go 71. They even offer a motorized offi ce suite for the more business-minded racing afi cionado.• For even the least fi t or scientifi cally inclined among us, there is one record potentially within our reach, “Most T-Shirts Worn At Once.” On May 22, 2010, Croatia’s Krunoslav Budiseli bested a former Swedish record holder by wearing 245 T-shirts at the same time. The feat took a little less than two hours to complete and ended with the Croatian wearing about 150 pounds (68 kg) worth of T-shirts. Budiseli said things started to become diffi cult around the 120th shirt, yet he somehow summoned the strength and force of will to don 125 more. Will May 22 live on forever in the annals of Croatian T-shirt achievement? Only time will tell.• In the annals of “records least likely to exist,” the “Most Nights Spent In A Room Full of Scorpions” record would’ve been pretty close to the top, yet Kanchana Ketkaew of Thailand actually managed it. Ketkaew spent 33 days in the company of 5,320 live scorpions. The room, which was made of glass, was not much larger than a normal offi ce room — about 10 feet wide by 12 feet long. Despite sharing cramped quarters with a swarm of unfriendly crawling roommates, Ketkaew emerged relatively unscathed, getting stung only about 13 times. • After a day of exciting-yet-exhausting chair racing, you are bound to want a snack. How about a bite of the current record holder for “World’s Biggest Cookie,” which weighed in at 40,000 pounds? In 2003, the owners and employees of the Immaculate Baking Company converged to bake a cookie designed to satisfy even the largest of appetites. About a 100 feet in diameter, the cookie was so big that it had to be photographed from 100 feet above just to get it all on camera!

The fi rst national park in Canada, second in North America and third in the world, Banff, lies about an hour and a half west of Calgary, Alberta. • Banff started as a small hot springs reserve. When the Great Canadian Railway reached the Banff area in 1883, two railway workers discovered hot springs near an area referred to as siding 29. The hot springs quickly became an attraction for visitors, and the government established the Banff National Reserve in 1885. At that time, it was 10 square miles (26 sq km).• When the Canadian government changed the designation of the area to Rocky Mountain National Park in 1887, it included the town of Banff and the hot springs. The size at that time was 260 square miles (673 sq km). The main transportation to the park was the Canadian Pacifi c Railway, which is still around today, more commonly known as CP Rail. • Today, Banff National Park consists of 2,564 square miles (6,641 km2) of spectacular mountain scenery nestled in the heart of the Canadian Rocky Mountains. The western border of the park runs for 149 miles (240 km) along the Continental Divide. • The most famous landmark in the park and in the entire Canadian Rockies is Lake Louise, a beautiful glacial lake 35 miles (57 km) west of the town of Banff. Natives of the area were familiar with the lake when Edwin Hunter led Tom Wilson to his “discovery” of Lake Louise in 1882. Wilson gazed at the site and said, “As God is my judge, I never in all my explorations saw such a matchless scene.”

• Lake Louise is referred to as the Hiking Capital of Canada, the Skiing Capital of Canada, the Romance Capital of Canada (tied with Niagara Falls), the Jewel in the Heart of the Canadian Rockies and the Diamond in the Wilderness. All of the names are deserved! It is also the Highest Community in Canada at 5,020 feet (1,530 m). • Just as railroads helped build and increase traffi c to national parks in the United States, CP Rail helped with the popularity and growth of Canada’s fi rst national park. In 1888, CP Rail built the Banff Springs Hotel. (At the time, the wealthy were the only ones who could afford travel.) The historic hotel remains a great attraction of the park for visitors from all over the world. • A modest hotel geared toward adventurers was built at Lake Louise in 1890. With the lake in front and a mountain glacier behind, the hotel became a popular tourist spot. It was renamed Chateau Lake Louise in 1913 and after a fi re, was rebuilt much larger. The area then went on to become a major tourist stop. • Originally opened as summer-only resorts, Chateau Lake Louise and Banff Springs Hotel began opening for skiers during the winter holiday seasons in the 1970s. In 1988, when Calgary hosted the Winter Olympics, Banff National Park was showcased to the world. • Banff along with Jasper, Kootenay and Yoho National Parks and the provincial parks of Mount Robson, Mount Assiniboine and Hamber are designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site, one of the largest protected areas in the world.

Some of the oddest weapons used: an index fi nger, an egg, a bowling ball, a wedge of cheese, an artifi cial leg, a twentyone pound turkey, a hotfudge sundae, a banana, a frozen sausage, a lit cigarette, a one-and-ahalf-pound Chihuahua, an insect, a snake, and a toilet seat. We can just imagine a dumb criminal attempting an armed robbery with a wedge of Limburger. “Give me your money, or I’ll cut the cheese!”

Positive I.D.

Detective Chris Stewart of the Brunswick (Georgia) Police Department told one of our America’s DumbestCriminals fi eld reporters about a robbery suspect he transported back to the scene of the crime for a positive identifi cation: “We had gotten a call informing us that a woman had her purse stolen from a shopping complex,”

Stewart says. “A short time later, we saw a man who fi t the description given to us by the victim. So we picked him up and took him back to the scene of the crime.” Stewart explained to the suspect that they were going to take him back to the scene and that when they arrived he was to exit the vehicle and face the victim for a positive I.D. The man in custody heard this when the detective radioed ahead to the offi cer with the victim.

Stewart said he had a man in custody who fi t her description of the robber and they would be arriving shortly. When they arrived at the scene,

the suspect did exactly as he had been told. He stepped from the car and looked up at the victim. And before anyone could say anything,

he blurted out, “Yeah, that’s her . . . that’s the woman I robbed.”

He has been given a new photo I.D. for his cooperation . . . and this one included a prison

Offi cer Brian Hatfi eld of Brunswick, Georgia, tells a sad story with a comical twist. He stopped a disheveled man behind the wheel of a fairly nice van that had sustained quite a bit of body damage. The driver had

been weaving and was obviously a bit inebriated. When Hatfi eld ran a check on the individual, he found several traffi c warrants outstanding. So he brought the guy in for booking. The criminal didn’t even have a dime for his phone call, much less the hundred dollars for bail. He called an attorney collect and then told Hatfi eld his sad tale. “I won the Ohio lottery in April. Three million dollars.” “You won the lottery fi ve months ago and you don’t have a dime for a phone call?” Hatfi eld asked. ‘T got the fi rst installment, which was ninety-four thousand dollars. I went to Atlantic City and lost thirty thousand. Then I bought the van for thirty thousand, but I got drunk on some really good French wine and rolled the van.” According to Hatfi eld’s calculations, the man had frittered away most of his fi rst installment, but not all. “What did you do with the rest of the money?” “Oh,” he said, “I spent the other twenty-four thousand foolishly.”

Empathy

I’ve had a lot of people coming to me to talk about feeling sad or empty in the last month or so. They can’t put their fi nger on what would cause it. After visiting with them for a bit the answer is almost always, they are feeling empathetic to what’s going on in the world around then.

When someone is an Empath, they feel other’s emotions. If they work in an offi ce they tend to mirror the emotions of those around them, even if they aren’t personally involved with what is causing the emotion. Other’s can be so empathetic that they feel the emotions of people long distances away.

One of the many diffi culties with being an Empath is that the emotions feel like our own. When someone else is crying, we feel like crying. When someone else is angry, we’re angry also. However, it’s not your honest emotion. You are just feeling what they feel. Realizing this can be very diffi cult. If you often hear that you are over-reacting to something, perhaps it’s time to think about whether you’re an empath or not.

In the past year our country has been hit by some major weather and many lives have been taken due to it. Along with that, many people have lost everything they own. For those of us who are Empath’s these experiences are very diffi cult on us personally. We can feel tired, listless, weepy, angry. Basically

all of the emotions involved with grief.

If you are dealing with these unexpected sad or angry feelings, I suggest you limit the amount of media you expose yourself to. It’s okay to be informed, but there is no reason to be inundated. When we watch what’s happening on television or our computers we reinforce those sad or angry feelings and soon we just can’t get away from those emotions. The same is true if you watch a lot of news programs about warring countries.

Try not to give your life away to the emotions of others. It is wonderful to pitch in and help people out. What’s not wonderful is to allow yourself to truly feel depressed over something that isn’t personally affecting you.
