Disease Care versus Real Healing!By Dr. Greg Fors, DC / Board-certifi ed Neurologist
Possibly you have heard your doctor say, “We’re not exactly sure right now, why don't we follow up on this say six months from now and see what develops”. In other words you have not progressed to a nameable disease that can be managed with drugs. Our modern health care approach today is based on a disease care model. Disease is seen as an enemy, separate from the body, that must be labeled and destroyed. The body is seen as a physical object made up of separate parts, each with their own medical specialty requiring special drugs to fi ght its enemies. Much to the detriment of your health few clinicians see, and work with the body as a whole. In reality the body-mind has no discrete boundaries. Through the communication systems of the body (nervous, immune and endocrine systems) every cell, tissue and organ is intimately interconnected. Because of this the health of one organ affects the health of all other organs. As discussed in previous articles by this author, the health of the digestive tract has a profound infl uence on the health of distant tissues even our brain. We've also explored how improper diet and lifestyle leads to insulin resistance and metabolic syndrome well before diabetes develops. This insulin resistance turns on infl ammation that affects every tissue in your body leading to pain, fatigue, weight gain and eventually cardiovascular disease and Alzheimer's disease Let's look at the typical patient which may seem familiar to you. Most of course don't feel well, and complain of multiple symptoms, typically involving various interconnected tissues and organ systems. Nearly all are on multiple medications. Usually they have pain somewhere in their body, a signal from their nervous system that tissues, e.g. the muscles and joints are not healthy. Many have issues with fatigue and insomnia and at least 75% have some digestive disorder such as gastric refl ux, irritable bowel syndrome, or constipation. Nearly 2/3 of these patients are on some medication for depression or anxiety. What our disease care system misses is that these common symptoms of chronic pain and fatigue, digestive problems, depression, insomnia etc. come from the same underlying metabolic problems of systemic infl ammation, oxidative stress, insulin resistance, hormonal imbalances and mitochondrial dysfunction. Thsi is caused primarily by how we eat and live, along with our genetics. Many people seem blessed with wonderful genetics and can get along with frequent dietary and lifestyle indiscretions. But for most it eventuallycatches up causing metabolic dysfunction that leads to disabling and chronic symptoms that our disease care system is ill equipped to help. How is this disease care model working out for us? The US now spends $2 trillion per year on health care, more than any other country in the world. This should give us the healthiest population in the world but, in a recent study of the top 13 industrial countries the U.S. rank second from the bottom for the 16 indicators of a healthy population. Worse yet, an article in JAMA by Dr. Barbara Starfi eld published in 2000 stated that medical intervention was the third leading cause of death in this country. Only heart disease and cancer kills more people. As embarrassing as this is to us as a country it is even worse for you as an individual. Especially if you're one of millions in America who fi nd themselves taking three, or even fi ve prescription medications, plus over-the-counter drugs, yet feeling worse with each passing year. As with other doctors who practice functional medicine, my practice is dedicated to those special individuals who have said enough is enough, and are dedicated to taking the journey to real healing. If you're ready for this journey give our clinic a call and set up time to discuss what real healing means for you at no charge. Or attend an upcoming lecture.Dr. Greg Fors, D.C. is a Board-certifi ed Neurologist (IBCN), certifi ed in Applied Herbal Sciences (NWHSU) and acupuncture. Trained through the Autism Research Institute he is a registered Defeat Autism Now! Doctor. As the clinic director of the Pain and Brain Healing Center in Blaine Minnesota he specializes in a natural biomedical approach to fi bromyalgia, fatigue, depression, autism and ADHD. If you have any questions or comments regarding this article you can contact Dr. Fors at 763-862-7100 He is a sought after international lecturer for various post graduate departments and state associations. Dr. Fors is the author of the highly acclaimed book, “Why We Hurt” available through booksellers everywhere

● On July 26, 1775, the U.S. postal system is established by the Second Continental Congress, with Benjamin Franklin as its fi rst postmaster general. Until then there were no post offi ces in the colonies, so mail was typically left at inns and taverns. ● On July 25, 1832, the fi rst recorded railroad accident in U.S. history occurs when four people are thrown off a vacant car near Quincy, Mass. A cable on a vacant car snapped them off the train and over a 34-foot cliff.● On July 31, 1916, future racing legend Louise Smith, who will become the fi rst woman inducted into the International Motorsports Hall of Fame, is born in Barnesville, Ga. In her fi rst race, unaware
that a checkered fl ag meant the fi nish line, Smith kept going when the race ended until someone threw out a red fl ag.● On July 28, 1932, President Hoover orders the U.S. Army under Gen. Douglas MacArthur to evict Bonus Marchers -- a group of World War I veterans seeking cash payments for their veterans’ bonus certifi cates -- from Washington, D.C. MacArthur’s men set their camps on fi re, and the veterans were driven from the city.● On July 29, 1958, the U.S. Congress passes legislation establishing the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, a civilian agency responsible for coordinating America’s activities in space. NASA was created in response to the Soviet Union’s Oct. 4, 1957 launch of its fi rst satellite, Sputnik I.● On July 30, 1971, a mid-air collision between a Boeing 727 and a fi ghter jet in Japan kills 162 people. At 28,000 feet the Boeing suddenly encountered two military jets. One was fl own by a student who had
only a few hours of fl ying experience. Neither jet was equipped with radar.● On July 27, 1993, Boston Celtics star Reggie Lewis collapses and dies after suffering cardiac arrest while shooting baskets at Brandeis University in Boston. After previous cardiac arrhythmias, doctors had incorrectly assured him that he could continue to play.● On Aug. 4, 1892, Andrew and Abby Borden are found hacked to death in their Fall River, Mass., home. Daughter Lizzie, later immortalized in a famous rhyme, was arrested and charged with the double homicide. Taken with her Christian persona, the all-male jury acquitted her. Today, the house where the Borden murders occurred is a bed and breakfast.● On Aug. 2, 1939, Wes Craven, the man responsible for terrorizing millions of moviegoers with his “Nightmare on Elm Street” series, is born in Cleveland. Craven began his directing career with 1972’s “The Last House on the Left,” a violent teen horror fi lm.
● On Aug. 7, 1947, Kon-Tiki, a balsa wood raft captained by Norwegian anthropologist Thor Heyerdahl, completes a 4,300-mile, 101-day journey from Peru to Raroia in the Tuamotu Archipelago, near Tahiti. Heyerdahl wanted to prove his theory that prehistoric South Americans could have colonized the Polynesian islands by drifting on ocean currents.● On Aug. 3, 1958, the U.S. nuclear submarine Nautilus accomplishes the fi rst undersea voyage to the geographic North Pole. USS Nautilus, the world’s fi rst nuclear submarine, dived at Point Barrow, Alaska, and traveled nearly 1,000 miles under the Arctic ice cap to reach the top of the world.● On Aug. 1, 1966, Charles Whitman takes a stockpile of guns and ammunition to the observatory platform atop a 300-foot tower at the University of Texas and proceeds to shoot 46 people, killing 14 and wounding 31.

• Long Beach, Mississippi, is located on the coast of the Gulf of Mexico. It suffered a lot of damage during Hurricane Katrina in 2005 but is still known as the “friendly city,” its moniker since incorporation in 1905. • On the Atlantic side of the country are Long Beach Island, New Jersey, known as LBI, and Long Beach, New York. Both are islands. LBI is accessible via one bridge or by boat. Long Beach, New York, is an oceanfront island at the southern end of Long Island, New York. It has a 3.5-mile (5.6 km) beach and a 2.25-mile-long boardwalk that was built in 1914 with the help of elephants! • Do you know which state has the longest coastline in the continental United States? It is not Florida or California as you may guess, but Michigan. Michigan’s shoreline is 3,288 miles (5,292 km) long, including 1,056 miles (1,699 km) of island coasts. • Do you know which country has the longest shoreline in the world? Canada. Canada also has an area named “Long Beach.” The Long Beach “unit” of
beaches consists of Radar Beach, Long Beach, Combers Beach and Wickaninnish Beach, which run from north to south for 15.5 miles (25 km) and comprise the most popular portion of Pacifi c Rim National Park. This is the only national park on Vancouver Island in British Columbia, the westernmost province of Canada. It has long, sandy beaches, rocky shoreline, a rainforest and more. • Tofi no, at the northern end of this Long Beach, boasts the highest annual mean temperature in Canada, 42 to 44 degrees F (6-7 degrees C), which is also the same as the water temperature. Wetsuits are needed for surfi ng, but despite the chilly water, the waves draw northwest surfers year round.• A truly long beach that always makes the “world’s longest” beaches lists is Cox’s Bazar in Bangladesh. The area is on the southeastern coast of Bangladesh and stretches for 75 miles (120 km). The country is vastly overpopulated and impoverished, with most people living in the cities. The beach is never crowded, and the humid, tropical area is shark-
free! • In the lands “down under,” Australia and New Zealand both have beaches named “90 Mile Beach,” (145 km) even though neither is exactly that long! • The New Zealand beach is about 55 miles (88 km) long and is known for its huge sand dunes that look like the Sahara Desert. Ninety Mile Beach Marine Park in Australia, located along Victoria’s southeast coast, is a long, thin beach that actually stretches for 94.5 miles (152 km). This park is known for having the highest diversity of species of any place in the world. Scientists found 860 different species living in the sand within 12 square yards (10 m2), and 187 species in 1.2 square yards (1 m2). • Apparently, in spite of others claiming the distinction, Praia do Cassino in southern Brazil, near the Uruguay border, is actually the longest beach in the world. It is 149 miles (240 km) long. • Cancun, Mexico, is known for its white sand beaches and the fact that the sand stays cool. The sand is composed of microscopic plankton fossils instead of
silica, like most light-colored sand. • Opposite of Cancun’s white sand shores are the black sand beaches found in Hawaii, Alaska, Iceland and Black Sand Beach on the Lost Coast of California. Cooled lava from past volcanic eruptions formed the sand on these beaches, hence, the black color. Like asphalt, it absorbs the sun’s heat so you’ll need to wear shoes!• Wherever beaches are found, the tourists they draw are often a key part of keeping the adjacent towns and cities alive. Summer business sustains the economy year round for many beach areas. • In the state of Florida, beaches may be the most important stream of tourism and revenue. A lot of work is required to keep its beaches in good shape. Hurricanes are a major factor affecting beaches in Florida, as is erosion. In an average year, the state spends about $30 to $40 million for beach maintenance. The state collects approximately $3 to $4 billion from sales taxes paid by tourists, so they get a great return on their investment.
NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson
“Rather than using shelf paper in my pots-and-pans cabinet, I have lined the shelves with
carpet scraps. There is less noise when I am getting a pot out or putting clean pans away.” -- P.O. in New Mexico
Keep a spray bottle of full-strength white vinegar by your laundry area. Use it to spray the underarms of shirts that have deodorant stains on them.
“Our family vacationed at the beach this summer, and we learned a really neat trick to keep sand from getting inside the house so much. We got a small, infl atable baby pool and set it up near the entrance, along with a chair and towel. The kids dipped their feet in the baby pool, rinsed off their legs and then dried off. The pool was less than $5, and it made a
big difference.” -- N.N. via email After washing and drying thoroughly, wrap an iron
skillet in wax paper to store. When arranging fewer fl owers in a large-mouth
vase, use clear tape to create a grid across the opening. Then, you can arrange your stems in the holes. It gives some support to the stems, and the arrangement will be evenly spaced and very pleasing.
For new vining plants, use a simple clothespin to guide the vines to a trellis. Be sure to remove it as soon as the plant has attached itself, as it will grow stronger if it has to hold its own weight.
To bring out the natural sweetness of corn on the cob, try sprinkling a little bit of sugar in the pot after the water has come to a boil.
If the scar of a cantaloupe is rough or has a stem attached, the melon was picked too early and won’t ripen as well as one with a smooth scar. Also, check the net pattern on the outside; it should be even and
an overall tan-yellow color, not green or mottled. You can remove berry stains from your fi ngers
with lemon juice. Got berry juice on your tablecloth? Here’s E.B. of Mississippi’s suggestion: “Pour a generous amount of milk on the spot, let it soak for 15 minutes or more. Then soak in cold water with soap for an hour or more. Wash, rinse and dry.”
Soak raisins in cold water before chopping so that they won’t stick to your knife.
“Use lined-up celery ribs to create a base for your roast. This way, the juices move around more and the roast never sticks to the pan. I serve the celery with the roast, but you don’t have to if you don’t want to.” -- A.T. in Tennessee

MIGHTY MINNESOTANS CURT L. CARLSON (1914-1999) Starting in 1938 with an idea and a $55 loan, entrepreneur Curtis L. Carlson (1914-1999) founded the Gold Bond Stamp Company in his hometown of Minneapolis. Trading stamps proved to be right for the times, and swept the nation in a wave of dramatic growth during the 1950s and 1960s. Gold Bond and sister company Top Value Stamps helped revolutionize this new way that retail goods were marketed. In the late 1960s and 70s, Gold Bond Stamp Company expanded into the hospitality industry, acquiring dozens of additional businesses including T.G.I. Friday’s and Radisson Hotels, it also changed its name to Carlson Companies. When Curt Carlson made his first of many gifts to the University of Minnesota, his alma mater and first love, it gave him a great deal of satisfaction; ...he had this to say.
I gave this money to pay back the State of Minnesota for giving me an almost free education, so I had the necessary tools to go into business... There is no better way to express my deep appreciation to all Minnesotans than to make available a University that helps our graduates and future executives of our industries be competitive with the rest of the world.

Uinviersal Laws of Golf: No golfer ever swung too slowly. No golfer ever played too fast. A two-foot putt counts the same as a two-foot drive. The odds of hitting a duffed shot increase by the square of the number of people watching. The only thing you can learn from golf books is that you can’t learn anything from golf books, but you have to read an awful lot of golf books to learn it. No matter how badly you are playing, it’s always possible to play worse.
Famous Golf One LinersIt took me seventeen years to get three thousand hits in baseball. I did it in one afternoon on the golf course. - Hank Aaron
