By Dr. Greg Fors, DC / Board-certied Neurologist Spring is nally here and so is tick season, meaning Lyme disease becomes a concern for all of us. The symptoms of Lyme disease can show up with a bang or progress very slowly, innocuously, and cause a great deal of confusion. Commonly the initial symptoms are u like with fever, headache, nausea, muscle ache and a stiff neck. Many do not get these early symptoms and months later their rst signs may be tingling/numbness, muscle weakness, tremors/tics, optic disturbances, memory deciency, psychiatric presentations, or other neurologic disorders. In the nymph stage the ticks are as small as the period at the end of the sentence and very hard to detect. Therefore, many individuals who are infected write it off as u unless they get the very classic bull’s-eye rash in an easy to nd area. But the bull’s-eye rash only occurs or is found in about one third of the diagnosed cases. Many also believe that the tick needs to be attached for 1 to 2 days for the bacteria to be transmitted. However, as a person scratches, brushes up against things, or rolls over in sleep the tick can be compressed, causing it to expel its contents into the victim in less time. When Lyme disease is not identied or properly treated in the early stages symptoms may creep into one’s life over months, or even years. The symptoms may wax and wane even go into remission only to come out years later when the individual is under a great deal of metabolic stress. Negative lab results mean very little for some lab tests are extremely unreliable in the diagnosis of Lyme disease and other co- infections. Lyme patients are often nally diagnosed because of chronic symptoms such as arthritis, autoimmune disorders, bromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome. Individuals may also suffer with thyroid symptoms that are not responding well to thyroid medication. Consider the number one cause of thyroid problems in the US today; Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis. It is an autoimmune condition occuring when your immune system attacks and destroys healthy tissue. A chronic infection such as Lyme disease is a common reason for the immune system to become overactive and attack the thyroid and other tissues; the list of associated disorders from this is nearly endless. Lyme disease detection is extremely difcult even in chronic cases. Commonly used antibody tests can miss up to two thirds of positively infected individuals. The ELISA test is useless in the rst month after a tick bite, and may not detect past infections. The commonly relied upon Western blot test is nearly as ineffective, with only 44% sensitivity. In one study of children known to have Lyme disease the Western blot test was only able to identify 3 out of 10 cases. Personally, as a doctor, I take a very broad view of what Lyme disease actually is. It is traditionally dened as an acute infectious illness caused by the bacteria Borrelia burgdorferi, however, in its chronic form it involves so much more. In chronic Lyme disease other factors take on more signicance, such as immune dysfunction, co-infections, metabolic and hormonal imbalances and auto immune responses such as Hashimoto’s thyroiditis. This is what makes the disorder so difcult for the general practitioner to understand and properly treat. Undiagnosed co-infections commonly involve the microscopic protozoan parasite Babesia or the Bartonella bacteria, both transmitted by biting insects, especially ticks. Other tick-borne diseases infecting both animals and humans are Anaplasmosis and Ehrlichiosis. It is important for individuals suffering with chronic pain, fatigue and neurological symptoms to see a doctor who has an in-depth understanding of chronic Lyme disease. These other infective agents should be considered and possibly tested for by utilizing laboratories specialized in their diagnosis. Want to know more, attend my FREE SEMINAR! Sleep Well and Be Well Most people spend roughly a third of their lives sleeping. Except when they have a hard time sleeping, and many do. Sleep disorders are common, affecting 70 million Americans. The most often mentioned ones are insomnia, sleep apnea, restless leg syndrome and narcolepsy. For now we will address sleep apnea, one of the most common and under diagnosed sleep disorders. Sleep Apnea is a condition in which the tongue and other muscles of the airway relax and cause the airway to collapse. In some cases this can happen over 50 times per hour. Often, individuals are not even aware of the apnea occurring as they sleep. It may be the spouse that witnesses the snoring and gasping for air, nudging their partner to wake them concerned that they may die of suffocation. The chance of this happening is very remote. The brain recognizes when the airway collapses and arouses the person enough to open the airway and get the air they need. However, the effect of this repeated airway closure can eventually take its toll. Despite spending an adequate amount of time in bed, people with sleep apnea often feel tired. This is due to the repeated arousals that occur to keep the airway open during the night. The condition can eventually affect the heart and brain. People who have sleep apnea are at higher risk for cardiovascular diseases such as hypertension, atrial fi brillation, heart attack and heart failure. There is also a higher incidence of stroke and diabetes in the presence of sleep apnea. Chronic excessive daytime sleepiness can lead to problems with memory and concentration affecting your ability to make decisions. It can also impact relationships. When a person is constantly tired and needing to take naps, they do not have the time and

energy to devote to their family. Some people do not have bed partners to help recognize symptoms of sleep apnea. In this case the individual needs to focus on how they feel during the day.

Here is a simple questionnaire to help identify risk factors:

STOP-BANG: Sleep Apnea

Screening ToolAnswer each of the following yes or no

1. Do you SNORE loudly (louder than talking or loud enough to be heard through closed doors)?2. Do you often feel TIRED, fatigued, or sleepy during daytime?3. Has anyone OBSERVED you stop breathing during your sleep? 4. Do you have or are you being treated for high blood PRESSURE?

5. BMI more than 35? 6. AGE over 50 years old? 7. NECK circumference over 15.75 inches? 8. Male GENDER? More than 3 yes answers: High-risk for OSALess than 3 yes answers: Low-risk for OSA

Do you think you or anyone you know has a sleep problem? If so it is worth taking the time to have a sleep evaluation.

Many people think they could not sleep in a lab setting so they avoid going into a sleep clinic. That is why some clinics are now offering an at home sleep study option. Sleep specialists provide detailed instruction on how to use the device. The patient is then able to be studied in the familiar environment of their own bedroom. The home sleep study device primarily screens for sleep apnea and may not be adequate when other conditions are present, depending on disease severity.

When sleep apnea is treated, your life can improve dramatically! In fact most people are amazed at how well they can feel. They had attributed their lack of energy to their age, weight or just being out of shape. With treatment not only do they sleep better but their bed partner sleeps better as well.

The primary objective for treatment of sleep apnea is keeping the airway open. Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) is the gold standard for this as it treats mild, moderate and severe sleep apnea. CPAP is a machine about the size of a shoebox with a hose that extends to a mask that is worn over the nose and pressurized air is blown into the airway preventing it from collapse. CPAP is pressurized air, not oxygen.

Other potential treatment options, depending on severity of the disease include specialized mouth guards, weight loss, positional therapy and surgery.

Most people are able to adapt to CPAP and do fi ne with it. But it is important to get the specialized care necessary to help with adjustment to CPAP. Says Dr. Gensmer, board certifi ed sleep physician at Northwind Lung Specialists & Sleep Center in Coon Rapids, “We are a small clinic and can give personal care that the large health centers simply are not set up to provide.” The communication within the specialized clinic is uniquely cohesive as the sleep health providers, sleep center and equipment department are all under one roof. “We really get to know the patients and their family since we are seeing them so often and we meet their individual needs.” Says Julie Dahl, Nurse Practitioner at Northwind. As evidence of their level of care and commitment Northwind has a compliance rate for patient CPAP usage of over 90% compared to the community standard of 60-70%.

Reasons to See a Sleep Specialist● Loud snoring● Excessively tired during the day● Trouble falling asleep● Restlessness at night

Do not guess. Do fi nd out if you have a treatable problem by contacting a sleep center. It can improve your health and will at the very least, give you a more restful night’s sleep.

Unbeknownst to Mitchell and the children, the balloon was armed, and it exploded soon after they began tampering with it.

On May 3, 1952, a ski-modifi ed U.S. Air Force C-47 piloted by Lt. Col. Joseph O. Fletcher of Oklahoma and Lt. Col. William P. Benedict of California becomes the fi rst aircraft to land on the North Pole. A moment later, Fletcher climbed out of the plane and walked to the exact geographic North Pole, probably the fi rst person in history to do so. On May 4, 1965, San Francisco Giants outfi elder Willie Mays hits his 512th career home run to break Mel Ott’s National League record for home runs. Mays would fi nish his career with 660 home runs, good for third on the all-time list at the time of his retirement. On May 2, 1972, after nearly fi ve decades as director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, J. Edgar Hoover dies just as the Watergate affair is about to explode onto the national stage. An inquiry later revealed that the FBI had illegally protected President Richard Nixon from investigation. On May 8, 1988, Stella Nickell is convicted of murder by a Seattle jury. She was the fi rst person to be found guilty of violating the Federal Anti-Tampering Act after putting cyanide in Excedrin capsules in an effort to kill her

husband. She began planning his death after their 1976 honeymoon. On May 9, 1671, Thomas Blood, an Irish adventurer better known as “Captain Blood,” is captured attempting to steal the Crown Jewels from Charles II of England in the Tower of London. Charles was so impressed with Blood’s audacity that, far from punishing him, he made him a member of his court with an annual pension. On May 14, 1914, Washington Senators pitcher Walter “Big Train” Johnson throws his 54th consecutive scoreless inning, against the St. Louis Browns in Sportsman Park III. Johnson broke a 53-inning record set in 1910 by Jack Coombs of the Philadelphia Athletics. On May 11, 1934, a massive dust storm sends 350 million tons of topsoil fl ying from across the parched Great Plains as far east as New York, Boston and Atlanta. Even ships some 300 miles offshore saw dust collect on their decks. On May 12, 1949, an early crisis of the Cold War comes to an end when the Soviet Union lifts its 11-month blockade against West Berlin. The blockade had been broken by a massive U.S.-British airlift of 278,288 relief missions to the

city, resulting in the delivery of 2,326,406 tons of supplies. On May 15, 1963, Gordon Cooper is launched into space aboard Faith 7 on the longest American space mission to date. Cooper completed 22 orbits of the Earth and spent 34 hours in space. On May 13, 1981, Pope John Paul II is shot and wounded at St. Peter’s Square in Rome. Turkish terrorist Mehmet Ali Agca, an escaped fugitive already convicted of a previous murder, fi red several shots at the religious leader. Agca was immediately captured. After a two-day trial, he was sentenced to life in prison. On May 10, 1990, the government of the People’s Republic of China announces that it is releasing 211 people arrested during the massive protests held in Tiananmen Square in Beijing in June 1989. Most observers viewed the prisoner release as an attempt by the communist government of China to dispel much of the terrible publicity it received for its brutal suppression of the 1989 protests.

NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson● Make children’s pills easier to swallow by crushing them and putting them in a bit of jelly or applesauce. Make sure, especially if it’s a prescription medicine, that it can be crushed. -- U.L. in Minnesota● To keep kids from running into a closed sliding-glass door, cut out a small picture of something that’s brightly colored, “laminate” it by taping it across both sides and then tape it to the door at children’s eye level. -- E.R. in New York● Painting season is in full swing at my house, and here are my two favorite painting tips: One is to lightly soap the windows (glass only) and let it dry. Any paint splatters will land on the soap, which can be easily wiped away when the paint is dry. The other is to give locks, hinges and doorknobs a light coat of petroleum jelly. It works the same way, and when polished away, it leaves a nice shine to hardware.

● Cleaning windows? Use a nylon net scrubbie from the kitchen to remove bugs from screens. It also works really well to scrub bugs off the car grille or windshield.● Here’s a tip you can use when parallel parking in front of a storefront. Check the refl ection to see if there’s room when backing in or pulling forward. -- O.W. in California

● “My roses really look beautiful. When cutting stems to put in a bouquet, I use a clothespin to grip the stem. It saves me from

getting pricked by thorns, because it has a bit of reach to it.” ● To keep your brick walkway clear of grass and weeds, sprinkle salt in the cracks.● “If you have to cut a nylon cord or shoelace, you can use a fl ame to melt the end into a nub that won’t run or fray. Use a little heat and press it together on a hard surface very briefl y. It works fast!” -- R.S. in Maine● To get glass shower doors squeaky clean, use a paste of baking soda and water to scrub stubborn water stains, then rinse the whole thing with straight white vinegar. Put the vinegar in a spray bottle and spray well, then rub off with a sponge. Rinse with plain water.Send your tips to JoAnn at: [email protected]. (c) 2011 King Features Synd., Inc.

MAY BABIES (continued)

• You may remember South African runner Zola Budd who, at age 17, broke the women’s 5000 meter world record. She was especially noted for the fact that she ran barefoot. While competing at the 1984 Olympics in the 3000-meter race, Budd had three collisions with U.S. runner Mary Decker, with Decker falling, injuring her hip and withdrawing from the race. An international athletic jury found Budd innocent of any wrongdoing in the incident.• Not too many music fans are familiar with the name Eithne Patricia Ní Bhraonáin, but millions have heard the music of Enya. Enya Brennan is an Anglicized approximation of how this Irish singer’s name is pronounced

in her native Donegal dialect. As of 2009, her album sales stood at over 70 million. This multi-talented musician performs all the instruments and vocals in the majority of her songs and has sung in 10 different languages in her recordings. Her vocals are layered up to 80 times during recording to achieve her distinctive sound. If you’ve seen the movie “Fellowship of the Ring,” you’ve heard her composition “May It Be,” the fi lm’s theme, a song for which she received an Oscar nomination. She is Ireland’s second-biggest musical artist. • If Enya is No. 2 in Ireland, who’s number one? That honor belongs to another May baby, Paul David Hewson, better known as Bono. Rolling Stone has ranked him as the 32nd greatest singer of all time, and his band U2 was inducted into the Rock and Roll

Hall of Fame in 2005. Back in 1978, while still in high school, Hewson answered a note on the school bulletin board seeking musicians for a rock band that was written by drummer Larry Mullin, and U2 was born. As to why he is rarely seen without sunglasses, Bono states that his eyes are very sensitive to light and swell up and turn red. But that’s not the whole story. In his words: “It’s part vanity, it’s part privacy and part sensitivity.” . • Who hasn’t heard Bing Crosby croon “White Christmas” in his distinctive bass-baritone voice? Born in May, 1903, Crosby was a descendant of Mayfl ower passenger and Pilgrim spiritual leader William Brewster. At age six, Harry Lillis Crosby became a fan of “The Bingville Bugle,” a column in the Sunday edition of Spokane, Washington’s Spokesman-Review. A 15-year-old neighbor and fellow fan began calling him Bing and the nickname stuck. Crosby had his fi rst No. 1 hit at age 25. His success

continued as 10 of 1931’s top 50 songs featured his voice, either solo or with others. He made 1,700 recordings, and 383 made the Top 30, and 41 were No. 1 on the charts. Known as an avid golfer, he was also part owner of baseball’s Pittsburgh Pirates. • Little did Ken Jennings know when he stepped onto the set of the game show “Jeopardy!” on June 2, 2004, that he would be appearing in 75 episodes and set a record for the longest winning streak on the popular program. During his tenure as champion, the Utah software engineer earned $2,520,700, plus $2,000 for second place on the day of his defeat and another $500,000 prize during the program’s Ultimate Tournament of Champions. Barbara Walters featured Jennings on her 2004 ABC News Special “The Ten Most Fascinating People of 2004.” In addition, Jennings chronicled his success in a 2006 book “Brainiac: Adventures in the Curious, Competitive, Compulsive World of Trivia Buffs.”• At age 24, Tina Fey became a writer at NBC’s “Saturday Night Live,” and by 29, she was the head writer. The next year she joined the cast, where she remained six years until 2006. She is the creator of the TV series “30 Rock” and is the winner of seven Emmy Awards and three Golden Globes. Her daughter was born in 2005, and she returned to work just one month later, saying, “NBC has me under contract. The baby and I only have a verbal agreement.”• Clint Eastwood turns 81 this May and seems to have no intention or retiring. He spent his early years in a series of jobs, including lifeguard, grocery clerk, forest fi refi ghter and golf caddy. He was almost 30 before the turn in his career came along with the role of Rowdy Yates in television’s “Rawhide,” a character he would play for the

next six years. After starring in a string of Western movies, he moved on to the “Dirty Harry” fi lms. When Sean Connery left the role of James Bond, it was offered to Eastwood, but he declined, stating that Bond should be played by a British actor. Eastwood has had a lifelong love of music and the piano and has composed the music for many of his fi lms. • The family of Henry Kissinger fl ed the persecution of Nazi Germany in 1938 and moved to New York when he was 15. After serving in the U.S. Army for three years (where he was a Bronze Star recipient), he went on to Harvard University, receiving his Ph.D. in 1954. For the next 15 years, he was a member of Harvard’s faculty before entering the political world, serving as the U.S. Secretary of State under Presidents Nixon and Ford.

MIGHTY MINNESOTANS John H. Stevens (born in Brompton Falls, Quebec, Canada) Considered the “Father of Minneapolis” by his peers. Stevens arrived in the Minnesota Territory in 1849 and became the first authorized resident on the west bank of the Mississippi River, later to become Minneapolis. He was granted permission to occupy the site in exchange for providing ferry service to St. Anthony, across the river. His house was relocated to Minnehaha Park in south Minneapolis in 1896.

Tidbit'ing Your Golf Game (Chipping)Most players do not miss their chip shots too far left or right but have trouble getting the distance correct. One way to get control of this shot is to shorten the backswing and then accelerate on the forward swing. If your backswing is too long, your will tend to hit the ball too far or sense that the backswing is too long and then slow down on the forward swing. Take the club back straight and then make a crisp stroke through the ball. Practice Perfects

Famous Golf One Liners“He who has the fastest golf cart never has a bad lie.” -Mickey Mantle
