The physiological benefits of massage therapy begin with the release of serotonin, an important neurotransmitter. Serotonin is the body’s natural pain reliever. Often clients who present with pain conditions will experience higher stress levels, low mood and broken sleep patterns. Massage therapy prompts the increased release of serotonin, reducing pain, inducing deep restorative sleep, lifting mood, and allowing the body to completely relax. Serotonin is vital in regulating mood, behavior, appetite, digestion, sleep and memory.

The relaxation response that occurs during treatment is your nervous system at work. A state in which your heart rate and breathing slows, your blood pressure lowers, your production of stress hormones decrease, and your muscles relax. Massage therapy will assess past and present health conditions and then applies focused remedial massage techniques to manipulate soft and connective tissues, soothe, palpate, decompress, lengthen, stretch, and release pain, tension, inflammation, and any holding patterns.

Your cellular health, circulation, lymphatic and immune system, skin tone, joint mobility and flexibility, recovery, and mental health will improve.

Book your treatment today with our Healthy Connections Remedial Massage Therapist. Mon-Fri - 3624 2185

It’s that time of the year

Your Health

Australia experienced one of its worst flu seasons last year; the largest since the 2009 ‘bird flu’ year.

With another flu season on its way, it pays to get in early with a vaccination to help prevent illness. The flu, or influenza, is highly contagious and is passed on through infected droplets from coughs or sneezes. Symptoms include high fever, dry cough, aches, chills, sore throat, a stuffy nose and loss of appetite. In most cases the flu lasts for a few days or weeks but it can be more serious; an estimated 3000 deaths in Australia each year are linked to flu.The flu season typically stretches through the colder months from April to October. Immunisation prior to this period helps reduce the risk of infection with the virus.“Vaccines give the immune system a head start,” explains Professor Allen Cheng, Director of the Infection Prevention and Healthcare Epidemiology Unit at Alfred Health, in Melbourne. “Exposing the immune system to the components of the flu virus ‘trains’ the immune system to recognise the virus more quickly when it meets the real thing. At best, vaccination reduces the risk of influenza by about 50 to 60 per cent. While this is far from ideal, it is still better than nothing.”

Vaccination is recommended for healthcare workers, children and people who work with children, pregnant women, the elderly, indigenous Australians and those with chronic health conditions, such as diabetes and lung disease.

What else can I do to avoid getting the flu?Avoid close contact with people who are sick

Stay home when you are sick

Cover your mouth and nose

Clean your hands

Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth

Practice other good health habits.

Shingles vaccineA vaccine to prevent the painful and potential deadly shingles infection will be available to 70-year-olds free of charge from November this year. Ask your doctor about the vaccine at your next appointment.

The Federal Government has allocated $100 million over four years to provide the vaccine free through the National Immunisation Program (NIP), and expects around 240,000 people to be immunised each year. It is also funding as five-year catch up program during which Australians aged between 71 and 79 years are eligible to receive Zostavax through the NIP. Altogether, the Government expects around 1.4 million will be administered the vaccine through this initiative.

Shingles is caused by the reactivation of the varicella-zoster virus that causes chicken pox in children. Following initial infection, the virus lies dormant in nerve roots near the spinal cord, and can reactivate at any time. The infection often appears as a painful rash or blisters on the skin, and the associated pain can be excruciating. In addition to the rash, in 50 per cent of cases shingles can lead to post-herpetic neuralgia, a chronic and debilitating form of neuropathic pain that can persist months or even years after the rash has healed.

Drug company bioCSL said that more than 97 per cent of Australians had developed antibodies to the varicella-zoster virus by the time they were 30 years of age, indicating almost universal potential to develop shingles among the adult population – though medical experts warn there is no way to predict who might develop shingles, or when.
