NOVEL CORONVIRUS UPDATE

Further to my community advice on Monday 27th January regarding the spread of Novel Coronavirus I write to inform that, families must now adhere to the updated recommendations of the Victorian Government, which can be accessed via https://www.education.vic.gov.au/about/department/Pages/coronavirus.aspx.

The Australian Government Department of Health has advised that individuals experiencing symptoms and/or have been in contact with a confirmed case of novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV) should arrange to visit their usual doctor for urgent assessment. They should telephone the health clinic or hospital ahead of arrival. Symptoms include (but are not limited to) fever, cough, sore throat, fatigue and shortness of breath

I take this opportunity to remind the community that everyone can protect themselves against infections by practising good hand hygiene and respiratory hygiene. Here are some tips that everyone at our school and kindergarten should follow:

Cover your mouth and nose when coughing and sneezing with a tissue, or cough into your elbow.

Dispose of the tissue into a bin and then wash your hands afterwards.

Wash your hands regularly, after using the toilet, and before eating.

INTERIM STUDENT REPORTS

You will receive an Interim Report on Monday 16th March, outlining your child’s progress at this time of the year. Parent/Teacher Interviews will be conducted during the week commencing Monday 23rd March, where you will have the opportunity to discuss your child’s progress and any other information. I hope that you value this additional opportunity to work in partnership with your child’s teacher to ensure the best learning outcomes for your child.

PUBLIC HOLIDAY APPROACHING

This is an early reminder that Monday 9th March, 2020, is a public holiday. Students do not attend school on this day. This is the day we acknowledge Labour Day.

Labour Day in Australia celebrates workers’ roles in contributing to the nation’s economy. It is an annual public holiday. It commemorates the granting of the eight-hour working day for Australians.

The history of Labour Day spans over a century. It remembers those who struggled and succeeded to ensure decent and fair working conditions applied in Australia. During the mid to late 1800s the working day was long and arduous, where some employees would work up to twelve hours a day, six days a week. Many Australians saw the need for better working conditions and in the 1850s there was a strong push for this. On April 21, 1856, the stonemasons at the University of Melbourne marched to Parliament to push for an eight-hour working week. An agreement with employees for a forty-eight hour week was eventually reached and Australians welcomed the eight-hour day.

UNITED WORLD SCHOOL (UWS) – OUR PARTNER SCHOOL IS UWS GUFA SCHOOL IN NEPAL

The United World Schools (UWS) is an organisation which assists countries provide an education for their children and young people. There are one hundred schools running across three countries due to the support of other countries. Over 18,000 children have now had access to free primary education and over five hundred teachers are delivering lessons on everything from the importance of hand washing, teaching Nepali and English to Mathematics and Science.

Burwood Heights Primary School staff and students are one of the many supporters of this worthwhile programme through the Global Citizenship Award programme. The country we are partnered with is NEPAL and the particular village is GUFA.

Gufa village is in Eastern Nepal in the Sankuwasaba district in the foothills of the Himalayas. It is incredibly remote and, before UWS arrived, the community had no power and no access to any form of education. This photo is of the children having a lesson in their natural environment. Before the school has been built.

Gufa is the largest village within a network of four hamlets. Unlike villages in England, the communities in Eastern Nepal have to be quite spread out to ensure that they have enough land to grow their own food. The people who live in Gufa are predominately Buddhist or Hindu, while Tamang is the community's local language.

How the students and the community have assisted Gufa is by raising funds. The realistic fundraising target is $1,200. Last year our Senior School students were set a research task that formed part of the 'learn' section of the Global Citizenship Award.

The Award part of this project (bronze award), students had to show that they had 'shared' and 'acted', the acting part relating to our fundraising goal. For example, students were able to bake a cake for a cake sale, take part in a sponsored run round the school, help a neighbour by mowing their lawn and many other fundraising activities. When students completed each of the items in the “learn, share and act” framework, a list of the names of the students was forwarded to the organisation and certificates were returned acknowledging the students’ contribution to the Gufa community in Nepal.

Please find below some photos of the environment of the Gufa village – the community we will continue to help have an education.

A student learning to write and read.

With over two hundred and sixty-three (263) million children and young people out of schools across the world, there is much that needs to be done. Burwood Heights Primary School is extremely pleased to continue to be part of this important, meaningful and worthwhile programme. We will certainly keep you all updated on this as we enter our third year of assistance and I know you will hear more from your child.

MPARNTWE EDUCATION DECLARATION

In December 2019, a historic gathering of education leaders from across the nation established Australia’s educational goals and actions for the next decade. The inaugural Declaration was made in 1989, and ensures all Australian Education Ministers commit to national education goals. It is refreshed around every ten years.

The Alice Springs (Mparntwe - pronounced as ‘M-ban-tua’) Education Declaration, launched by the Education Council on 12 December 2019, commits the Australian Education System to promoting excellence and equity.

The agreement also recognises that all young Australians should have the opportunity to become confident and creative individuals, successful lifelong learners, and active and informed members of the community.

Through the Declaration, each government also renewed their commitment to celebrating and learning from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures, knowledge and histories. Reflecting that commitment is a focus on ensuring that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples are supported to imagine, discover and unlock their potential.

Kitchen Corner Flaky pastry filled with sweet custard. What a perfect way to finish off your Chinese inspired banquet.

Chinese Style Custard Tarts

Ingredients

5 egg yolks 80g (1/3 cup caster sugar 125 ml (1/2 cup) cream 125 ml (1/2 cup) milk 2 tsp vanilla extract 1 sheet ready rolled puff pastry Icing sugar, for dusting

Method

Preheat oven to 200C and grease a 12 hole, 80 ml or 1/3 cup muffin tin.

Put the egg yolks, sugar, cream, milk and vanilla extract in a large bowl and beat until combined. Set aside.

Cut the sheet of pastry in half and put one half of top of the other and set aside to rest for 5 minutes.

Roll up the pastry from the short side and slice the pastry roll into 12 rounds, approximately 1 cm each round.

On a floured surface, with a rolling pin, roll out each pastry disc to a 10cm diameter and get it as thin as you can but leaving the pastry easy to handle without breaking (they don’t have to be perfectly round).

Carefully press each piece of pastry into the muffin holes ensuring they fit snugly and leave no spaces.

Spoon the custard mixture into each pastry case until the liquid is just under 1cm from the top (use all the mixture).

Bake for about 20 minutes or until the custard is golden on top.

Leave tarts in the tin 5 minutes before transferring to a rack then dust with icing sugar.

Enjoy!
