Here is Aaron Thang’s (12 Tapang) report of the first day of training:

“Early in the morning (Sunday), 11 students from the A Level group went to school for our first DiveHeart training. Our training began with an introduction of what DiveHeart was and about their work in the water. We then began to do an activity meant to help us understand how to handle blind participants, as well as learning how to guide them effectively. We had to blindfold ourselves, and put ourselves in their shoes. It was really scary feeling vulnerable and having to rely upon someone else to move you about.

We were also taught about the parts of a wheelchair and how to handle it when dealing with participants with different disabilities. This was quite difficult at times, especially when we had to move the wheelchair safely up a step.

Once our training was done, we all took a relaxing swim in the school pool to conclude our tiring morning. Overall, we really enjoyed ourselves, as we were able to gain new knowledge and develop greater empathy for the people we will be working with later on in the year.”

One such activity has been volunteering with a local Charity, DiveHeart, who provide diving experiences to physically disabled people of all ages. This will be an activity that will go on throughout the year, but first, our students had to attend some important training.

The Key Stage 5 students have been extremely busy in the first couple months back at school. As part of their holistic programme, supported by a variety of staff and volunteers, Year 12 and 13 have been taking part in a number of extra activities and timetabled courses, beyond their normal A Levels, to build their transferable skills and confidence.

As part of their preparation for university applications, the A Level students have had a number of visitors already to help give them ideas for their future and advice. One such visitor was Dr Ardavan Arzandeh, Senior Lecturer in Law at University of Bristol, accompanied by their International Recruitment Officer, Sumithra Durai. Dr Ardy (as he introduced himself) spoke about the necessary requirements of getting into a Russell Group university such as UoB, scholarship applications and general thoughts about living and studying in the UK. He also gave his audience an insight as to what the course in Law was like, and how he came to be a senior lecturer there. It was a very interesting and informative session, and there were many discussions being held at the end as students made personal enquiries.

Other than the ECAs that our students normally do, Year 12 have also been enrolled on to the Level 3 Sports Leaders course. TPHS is the first (and currently only) school in Malaysia to offer and assess this course, and it carries UCAS points that can help them apply for UK universities.

In my role as Key Stage 5 Coordinator, I have the pleasure of watching these young adults grow into their future careers, guiding and helping them to discover what their priorities are and what kind of environment they want to move forwards to. I have been encouraging them to fill their resumes with lots of exciting and skilled opportunities, helping them to stand out from the applications crowd. Their grades should be their priority, but developing passions and exploring new possibilities makes them the kind of candidates universities all over the world will want. It is my goal to help them be the best they can be for the future they desire.

Last Tuesday on March 10th, Milepost 1 of International Primary held their exit point to mark the end of their IPC (International Primary Curriculum) learning journey of unit ‘Who Am I?’. Within this topic the children learned about themselves and each other and, through this, they are able to celebrate the differences between themselves whilst seeing all the things that they have in common. Two IP2 classes were involved and the children were divided into six stations according to subjects learnt: Society, Art, Science, Geography, and International (two stations). Among the activities conducted were: ‘Deciding Your Mood’ at the Society Station, ‘Locating Your Home & Host Country’ and ‘Well-known Geographical Features’ at the Geography Station, ‘Listen To Your Heartbeat’ at the Science Station and ‘Picasso Wannabe’ at the Art Station.Milepost 2 and Milepost 3 of IP were invited to join the Exit Point. The Milepost 1 children definitely had fun displaying their learning and exhibiting their knowledge, skills and understanding accordingly. The learning goals of the Exit Point were clearly achieved and there was a buzz of excitement for their achievements that could easily be seen by the children's happy and satisfied expressions. They are all individuals but together they make up a wider community: one that should always be supportive and where we respect one another.

My targets for these two weeks are to finish Korean Math books with online video lessons that are linked to them and learn more vocabulary by reading books or any articles. Also, I'm doing my science project.

    Youmin Lee

When school was closed I focused on my english vocabulary, learning new words on the internet and how to correctly use them. I also started on making my mask for drama.

I also started doing more Maths exercises, and doing the workbook assignments.

Then I started to take care of my tomato plant-for a project in science.

Despite school closure due to movement control order, Tunku Putra-HELP school has implemented a virtual classroom that allows for live interaction between tutors and learners as they are participating in learning activities through videoconferencing and various online platforms. Teachers have a very important role of a moderator who guides the learning process and supports group activities and discussions. It is undoubtedly a new journey with which we are less familiar but well-prepared in circumstances such as this. Here are some pictures of activities in the first one or two days.

During the lockdown period, our teachers put our  homework in google classroom. For Maths lesson, our teacher put our test questions on google classroom. For Humanities lesson we were asked to do a slide show of a natural hazards and the consequences.

    Arya Faridah Hamizan Khairul Ariffin

During this lock down, many teachers have given us students homework to do online and explained it in google classroom.Everyone was informed and we could all understand the task given.

For example: drama homework It was clearly explained and there was learning objectives+success criterias. Images and videos are also provided for us to understand and help us on the task.

Our very own Joseph Chung Ming Chong received the inaugural TPH Young Innovator & Researcher Award from Datin Chan-Low Kam Yoke. The ceremony was held on 6th March 2020 in the Laila Taib Library, attended by the members of the TPH Board of Governors, the Senior Leadership Team of the School, and Joseph’s fellow A-Levels students and teachers.

Joseph’s achievements include the gold medal at the national level in the Young Innovators Challenge both in 2017 & 2018. The most recent one was part of a team that innovated a device meant to prevent infant deaths in parked cars. This invention drew international attention and garnered him invitations to present his work in Sweden, Canada, and Norway. Joseph has just returned from a 3-month internship at The Genomics Research Centre, Academia Sinica in Taiwan. This was a research based project to research DNA extracts linked to Ogden Syndrome (related to learning capabilities as determined by brain and muscle growth).

In light of all these achievements and exuding pride in this homegrown Sarawakian talent, the TPH Board of Governors and the Senior Leadership Team elected to honor Joseph with this award. In addition to recognizing Joseph’s success, the leadership team also intended for his peers and friends attending the ceremony to be inspired to achieve their own greatness.

A HUGE HEARTFELT THANK YOU We come to the end of our first week working in ways we never thought imaginable.

TEACHERS-I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of you (teachers and assistants), who are tirelessly carrying on with your teaching, preparing resources and being creative so as to ensure our dear students are still receiving a meaningful education. I am humbled by your efforts and in awe of your determination and persistance. You are in no small way my superheroes!

PARENTS-I thank you parents for the lovely encouraging messages I have received on behalf of the teachers. Your encouragement, support and partnership in this time is heartwarming. I look forward to the time when we can all see each other again in person. Stay safe, strong and look after each other. This time is precious. Savour being together as a family.

STUDENTS-Wonderful students - thank you for joining us in this new learning environment. Do not worry if you cannot do all the work, it is OK. We miss being with you so much and cannot wait to be back in the courtyard and talking under the trees again. Do not worry if you cannot do all of the work set - teachers will be giving you more to do than you might be able to manage. Take time to learn new skills for life with your parents.

    Relax and be happy.
