Siam: The Art of Gold in the Golden Land of Suvarnabhumi The glistering golden rings, necklaces and many other gold jewelry, especially those elabo-rated with gemstones, sparkle in the light as if to reflect its preciousness. Since ancient time, gold crafts has long been worn as accessories among noble class in Siam, the ancientl name of Thailand.

Professor Niphon Yodkhampun, a royal goldsmith with the Bureau of the Royal House-hold and professor at the Faculty of Jewellery Design, Golden Jubilee Royal Goldsmith Col-lege, told us the story of gold.

Gold jewelry in the past represented the status of the wearer. In Ayudhaya era, the Three Seals Law prohibited ordinary people from wearing gold because gold jewelry be-longed to the King, who is the living god according to Brahman beliefs. As such, gold was once considered as an indicator of social status as those who were able to wear gold jewelry in the past were certainly not ordinary people. This was not about discriminating, but more like a kind of administrating. However, thing has changed as time went by. So, people are able to were gold jewelry as in the present time, Niphon said.

Niphon: as being a Royal Goldsmith for the Royal Household Bureau, his main respon-sibility is to repair ancient silver and gold artifacts including wearing apparels belongs to Royal families which requires master skill of craftsmanship. Being well aware of the signifi-cance of this unique kind of handicraft, he expressed his concerns about the future of gold crafting.

Im very proud of being a goldsmith. Im so proud of having a chance to carry on this craftsmanship descending from our ancestors to next generations. This kind of arts and crafts that require high and unique skill obviously represents the artistic skills of Thai people as well as their good heart. These elaborate arts and crafts also reflect the wealthy of the nation as well as its rich culture, Niphon added.

I wish Thai people, especially the youths, to appreciate the value and significance of these precious gold artifacts and its craftsmanship which is truly our national heritage. Although its hard to create a piece of this stuff, yet if we dont continue doing, this unique craftsman-ship will no longer exist in our country, Niphon emphasized.

As Gold is a precious & powerful substance, so wearing elaborately designed gold jewelry is believed to enhance the wearers power.

Apart from appearing as finely crafted jewelry, gold also plays a part in fine art, acrylic paint-ings in particular. This was initiated by Khun Yai, Monthon Tangthanasakul - the owner of Inspire Dcor where water-colored paintings with gold foils decoration are showcased.

After being a fashion designer for nearly two decades, he has successfully turned his hobby into business.

At first, I did paintings as a hobby, but after putting it on sale, I found out that it worked well. So, I started doing it as business, Khun Yai said. One day I came up with an idea to use pure gold leaf in my painting. Previously, like moral paintings or similar religious art works, he added.

Definitely, its not easy to create a single piece of this kind of art work. It has to be well planned before start working. Basically, after having some inspiration, Khun Yai will begin his work with drafting the outline and scale, then brief and discuss with my painters team to make sure that theyll get the same perception before letting them paint. However, he always closely inspects and completes each piece of work by himself.

The most difficult and most dedicate part of work is to apply gold leaf onto the paint because gold leaf is very delicate. We have to be utterly careful during this process.

Although gold leaf paintings can also be featured in other countries, yet in Khun Yais view point, they are not as beautiful and splendid as those made by Thai artists. This might be because Thai people have been familiar with this gold art works for centuries so that we can express it more clearly and beautifully than other nations.

These paintings created by Thai artists are very unique in design and splendid in creation, so they are highly demanded in the market. This kind of Oriental art works can represent our rich culture and characters of Thai people. However, its a pity that Thai people dont appreciate it much, he added.

Khun Yai believes that the value of this gold-leaf painting is not be-cause of the gold value itself, but the viewers perception of arts. Every piece of art work has its own value, yet you have to understand it first. Fortunately, many of young Thais have a chance to study art in education institutions, unlike old generations like us. However, to take it as a career, it not only requires knowledge and skill, but also great patience and experi-ences in marketing. So, you cant stop learning to create better works. Learning to adapt new technique or substance to add more value to your works is surely a key to success, he concluded.

Lemon Grass: A Capital TasteWhen visiting an unfamiliar town, we must think about where to go, what to do, and most im-portantly: what to eat. Great food can beautifully glorify and fulfil a trip. The visit to the capital of Canberra this time leads our vrthai crew to Lemongrass in the area of Woden.

It has been 12 years since Lemongrass has been part of the drive of Thai culture out to the eyes of the local Aussies. Soon their 2 other branches of the restaurant will be opened, and Khun Nok, KomKhai Jaratsongkitti, the delightful founder opens up to us about her secrets to success.

    (Laab Moo Taud)

  • Next is Seafood Pad Garee, a generous amount of prawns, crabs, and various other shellfish. The sophisticated mixed spices flavour brilliantly complements the fresh seafood. This is another bestseller.

Lastly, the Jungle Lamb, a heat-intense fresh stir-fried lamb is perfect for winter.

Our recommended desert is the Fig with Lotus Seed,a perfect fusion of Australian culture and traditional Thai sweets. Figs are stuffed with mashed lotus seeds, served with vanilla ice cream, roasted pistachios and whipped cream.

Apart from the exist-ing 3 restaurants, Khun Nok will be establishing another two. The first is Noodle Bar in Barton which obviously fo-cuses on anything noodle- Chinese, Vietnamese, Thai, and single-dish quick lunches to accommodate the busy workingmen around the Parliament House. And another is Ruan Manee across in the Yarralumba which will stick to the true Thai flavours for home-reminiscing meals for the Thais in Canberra and any Aussie locals who would like to challenge their taste buds.

What we take form Khun Nok and her experiences of the past 12 years is her personal attention to train her people for the service. The taste is secondary compared to the to-getherness of the people who run the restaurant. We are still not the best at making delicious food, we did not establish ourselves from there. But we can always improve on that, as long as we know how to work with people around us, how to train them so that we can trust them to help us. Success is always there, as long as you are willing to put your heart and soul into that and not let your personal mindset limit you from going there.

After quitting an assistance manager position at Kasikorn Bank in Thailand, Khun Nok came to complete her master degree in Canberra. She was inspired while working at an Australian-owned Thai restaurant and sparked a desire to own a restaurant. Her findings landed her at a restaurant around the Civic which was closing down, equipped with the students demographic of ANU and business people. She saw a great open space for her new restaurant and with her strong deter-minations and distinctive creativity she overcome the financial and real estate problems, and finally received a 3-year lease contract to take over.

Khun Nok oversaw the renovation of every aspect of the old restaurant. The interior was simplified for a clean, modern outlook and the menu redesigned and spiced up. Not long after the reopening, through word of mouth, every seat of every table was filled as customers flowed in. Khun Nok was obliged to call over her sister Khun Pingpong, Komkham Jaratsongkitti to come down and give a hand.

What we emphasize the most is our service. One must be genuine and pay attention to the customers to leave an impres-sion of a bond with them. This is what makes them willing to come back again. Says Khun Pingpong

4 years after the first branch, the 2nd Lemon Grass was opened due to popular demands. Khun Fha, Komdao Jarat songkitti their youngest sister and Khun Add, Wanthana Wongthawonwan their cousin were called over from home to look after the new branch, which is where we are today. Lemon Grass 2 is situated in a shopping district not far off from the city. The restaurants interior focuses on artifacts that reflect the Thai culture such as the use of Thai patterned wallpaper and the wooden panel structure taken from Thai traditional houses. The spaces are well controlled with plenty of room for customers to move around. Lemon Grass 2 has become a popular location for many diplomatic functions due to this quality.

Our recommended dishes today include firstly Laab Moo Taud- spicy pork salad deep fried in little pieces. This is a very unique entree which you will not find in many Thai restaurants. The traditional sour and spicy taste of pork Laab is well maintained if not amplified, while hot crispy herbs are ever more fragrant. This is so tasty it can be eaten on its own with the accompanied dipping sauce completely ignored. From an exotic new dish the Laab Moo Taud is now number 1 on their bestsellers list.

Next is Hor Mok Ta Ley, steamed red curry custard with seafood served in a hot clay pot for 2. The well balanced sweet and spicy flavours of spices are great with the overcoming of fishy tastes.

For those meat lovers- Moo Yang Ta Krai is not to be missed. Quality pork tenderloin is marinated with lemongrass and a secret blend of spices for 24 hours before grilling, served with fresh carrot, cucumber and tomatoes before finishing with a refreshing dressing.

Riesling is type of white wine that compli-ments Thai food very well. Riesling wine is not as renowned around the world as a Pinot-Noir or or a Shiraz however it is famous for its crisp, sharp taste that is scented with green apple, honey, lemon and rose petals. It is very sweet balanced perfectly with a hint of sour. The white grapes used for Riesling wine are nor-mally grown in foothills (piedmont). White grapes grow well in cold weather condi-tions and can also be harvested during the winter season. During this period, the grapes are not too ripe and therefore will result in good quality wine.

The best and most expensive Ries-ling wine is from Germany. This is due to the old grapevine where it has been cul-tivated in a valley, with perfect conditions requiring it to be a cold, cool climate with minimum exposure to the sunlight. Due to these conditions, grapes in that area are not too ripe and are low in sugar. If grapes grow in area that sunlight is un-able to reach, the wine will be sour. The producer has to add artificial sugar to make the wine sweeter. In some years, the weather has been warmer than usual in Germany, resulting in the increase of good quality-produced wine. A popular area where grapes are grown is in the Mosel river area in Germany.

In different parts of the world, Ries-ling wine is produced, with grapes being grown in different types of soils and ex-posed to distinctive weather conditions. The conditions alter the sweetness of the white grapes and therefore results in a wide variety of unique tastes.

Famous Riesling wine produced in Australia is from Mount Barker in West-ern Australia, as well as Clare Valley and Eden Valley in South Australia. These ar-eas have a suitable climate for growing grapes and have grapevines that are ap-proximately 70-80 years old. The taste of Riesling wine from these areas are similar to that of lemons but if you store it for a very long period of time, the smell be-comes similar to benzene.

Riesling wine compliments many Thai dishes from soups, stir fries, salads to foods that contain beef, chicken and pork. However it doesnt compliment spicy food very well, so be aware of the dishes you choose. Riesling wine also tastes great with Chinese and Japanese foods and seafood as well.

To have great tasting Riesling wine, you should store it for 1-2 years to let the wine settle before you open it. Good quality wines should be kept for the du-ration of 3-5 years. The age of the wine will make huge difference to the taste.
