instance, C/R-G ratios at the longtime Cumulus major market Country stations are: KPLX/Dallas, 46/54%; WFMS/Indianapolis, 47/53%; and, WSM-FM/Nashville, 47/53%. No other former Citadel stations seem to have altered their C/R-G ratios. One thing is certain: Atlanta Country listeners now have a very distinct choice in Country stations. WKHX’s changes took it from 220 tunes in its Gold catalog the week prior to 381 last week. Crosstown Country competitor Clear Channel WUBL is at 68/32% C/R-G and averaged 230 Gold titles the last couple of weeks. WUBL played 20 titles last week that fell between 1990-1995; WKHX played 107 from that same era.

The Hall Six React The 2012 Country Radio Hall of Famers (Breaking News 10/24) will be thoroughly profiled in Country Aircheck’s CRS print edition. Until then, here’s their initial reaction to the immortalizing news: •Journal/Wichita OM & KFDI PD Beverlee Brannigan: “I’m so flattered. To be included in this group of amazing Country radio professionals is beyond wonderful!” •Syndicated personality Moby: “I feel kind of blindsided,

“In many ways it’s a continuation of what I’ve been doing,” Garrison explains. “But with a more focused effort with our PDs and everyone in the group developing creative programs that get the audience engaged and maximizing our digital footprint.” The initiative Garrison heads may be a pilot program of sorts. “[CBS Radio SVPP Greg Strassell] created this new position which, if it works well, may be extended to other areas of the company,” Garrison says. “We’re getting ready to brainstorm within what we do and with artists and labels to make this work. Radio is changing. It’s more than just transmitters and receivers, so this new focus will be about getting all the properties and platforms working together with artists and labels to build those brands.” Reach Garrison at [email protected].

Atlanta’s Kicks Shifts Gears WKHX (Kicks)/Atlanta listeners woke up Friday morning (10/21) to a very different radio station. The new Cumulus outlet had a long-running current/recurrent-gold radio of close to 70/30%, and made a dramatic flip to 37/63%, according to Mediabase 24/7. By our count, more than 160 new gold songs had been added to the library, the majority of which were from the ‘90s. Vintage tunes not previously in the Gold catalog included lots of early Garth Brooks, Brooks & Dunn and Alan Jackson, plus selected cuts from Clint Black, the Judds, Patty Loveless, Diamond Rio and many others. Kicks averaged three currents an hour in most 6am-7pm hours before Friday, but has now moved to one or two currents an hour. However, the shift mainly seems to come from gold replacing Recurrents. In the 8am hour Thursday (10/20), there were two currents, five recurrents and three gold titles. In the same hour Friday (10/21), the station ran two Currents, two recurrents and six golds. The same pattern was followed in the 1pm hour: 3/9/3 (C/R/G) on Thursday, 1/5/10 on Friday. Looking strictly at currents, Kicks’ playlist is at 16, down from the 21-22 it previously averaged. This study was based on only one weekday of airplay information, so it’s hard to say if these changes or percentages are where WKHX will settle. Other major market Cumulus Country outlets have slightly higher ratios than does WKHX. For

Off The recOrd: LOcash cOwbOys R&J’s LoCash Cowboys’ Chris Lucas and Preston Brust put an industry spin on the artist interview: What station did you grow up listening to? CL: WPOC/Baltimore. PB: WWKI/Kokomo, IN. Any memorable radio tour meals? PB: Man Vs. Food challenge is the main meal that sticks out in our heads. We had to eat a 72-ounce steak, a salad, baked potato and Texas toast in under an hour. They told us to drink a bottle of Mylanta the night before.

We thought they were crazy, didn’t and lost.Do you remember the first time you heard yourselves on the radio? PB: We landed in San Antonio to visit KAJA. Chris’ dad had just passed away, and it was one of our first gigs back out. We were all tired and solemn. The station must have known when we landed because we got the rental, turned on the station and heard, “These boys just landed in town. Here’s their new single.” We went from being really quiet to screaming with our hands out the window. What adventures have you experienced while on your radio tour? CL: Preston has a gator fetish. PB: In Orlando, we were challenged to zip-line over hungry gators and then wrestle one. Chris peaced out because he’s got family. I agreed to do it, and it was really fun. Who takes the longer to get through airport security? CL: Preston wears more jewelry than Mr. T. sometimes. But we’ve got it down to a science. PB: Security tried to confiscate a pistol belt buckle George Jones gave me. I forgot I had it in my carry-on. I pleaded, “Please, don’t take this from me. I promise. It will never happen again.” The guard said, “If this was any other city, I wouldn’t believe you. But this is Music City.” He tucked it back in the bag and let me leave.Any nasty truck stop food tempt you? PB: No truck stop food. CL: Especially if you’re not on a bus, and you can’t do No. 2.Which regional is the most interesting driver? PB: Our Closest-To-Death Award goes to Bill Macky. He went within five inches of hitting a cement barrier and just blew it off, “Sorry about that, guys. No biggie.” CL: We call him Detour.Which question do you never want to answer again? PB: Are you Brad Pitt? I get tired of that. CL: I get Denzel Washington a lot.

to tell you the truth. I’ve been stunned ever since I got the call. Now I’m hearing from so many names I honor and recognize ... thank you over and over.” •Former KASE & KVET/Austin VP/GM Ron Rogers: “It’s humbling, of course. I accept it on behalf of those people who have been so good to me over the years – the ones who worked for me. I go back and think how grateful I am for the learning experiences I had at CRS. I look forward to coming back to Nashville and visiting with some old friends in February.” •WSM-AM personality Eddie Stubbs: “I’m tremendously honored and humbled. Several of my heroes are in the Hall of Fame. To be honest, I did not expect this, and that makes it even more special. I feel like I need to go out and earn this now.” • Consultant Rusty Walker: “To be a part of an industry that I love, and do what I love as long as I’ve been able to do it – and then have this happen – is unbelievable. Now my biggest fear is that when the time comes, how to get through it without bawlin’ like a baby.” • Former personality (WUBE/Cincinnati, WMIL/Milwaukee, WFMS/Indianapolis) Bill Whyte: “It’s a complete surprise and an honor. I’m thrilled beyond belief. I grew up listening to some of those guys already in the Hall. I worked with JD Cannon at WFMS and Duke Hamilton at WUBE. And to go in with Eddie Stubbs, who I work with at WSM-AM, is special.”

My Tunes: Music ThaT shaPed My Life Singer, songwriter, musician and producer

Mac McAnally discusses his most influential songs, albums and concerts:1. Somewhere Over The Rainbow: It has universal applications for anyone who hears it and contains the hope for a better life that drives so many of us to succeed.2. Willie Nelson, Ryman Auditorium, the eve of his 70th birthday show: Artists have up-and-down performances, but when Willie is “on,” it’s stunning. His singing, guitar

playing and ease on the stage will be an inspiration all my life.3. Paul McCartney, Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena, 2010: There were 30-plus songs in the set, and he never left stage, never took a sip of water and sang his ass off at 68. How hard and well he still goes at it should be the blueprint for anyone’s music career.4. Randy Newman’s Good Old Boys: It’s a concept album about the South. As a small town Southerner, I was very impressed with his ability to speak so well about a culture not his own. It’s timeless, with beautiful arrangements and powerful lyrics.5. Emmylou Harris’ Elite Hotel: It got me hooked on country music. The band, production, song selection and her angelic voice opened the door to some fine experiences and music.• A highly regarded song or album you’ve never heard: It’s embarrassing to admit as a Mississippi native, but I’ve never heard classic Robert Johnson blues recordings. I have no good excuse at this point. I’ve probably listened to less music than the average fan. I love it, but play so much that someone has to sit me down and say “Listen to this right now.”• An “important” piece of music you just don’t get: When I first heard Joni Mitchell’s Court and Spark, I didn’t get it. It was harmonically complex. I worked my way into it, and I’m so glad I did.• An album you played or listened to incessantly: Early on, it was The Beatles’ Abbey Road. I’m still in awe of everything about it. • One obscure or non-country song everyone should listen to right now: Louis Armstrong’s “What A Wonderful World.” It’s the opposite of obscure, but in the times we’re living in, the message is especially useful.

ZBB’s Music &Food Festival “It felt like the start of something really big,” says WEZL/Charleston, SC PD Bill West, who attended all three days of the Zac Brown Band’s Southern Ground Music & Food Festival over the weekend. A completely unique experience for West, the event “felt like a musical festival on the level of a Bonnaroo. We weren’t really expecting that. And because Zac controlled the concessions in terms of food and vendors, the entire event seemed to have a ZBB flair. You felt like Zac had his hands in a lot of things. There was a spirit to the event where it wasn’t just the music, but a lifestyle.” “Front porch” stage extensions offered those willing to pay a premium the chance to sit at tables and be served a multi-course meal from a menu developed by local and ZBB chefs. White also reports “top-notch festival staging, lights and sound. The sound quality was fantastic. My morning guy reported having the second-best musical moment of his life seeing ZBB do a cover of Pink Floyd’s ‘Comfortably Numb’ Friday night.” For those disappointed at missing out, White notes, “Zac did say on a couple of occasions that it would be an annual event.”

Chart Chat Congrats to Blake Shelton, Chris Stacey, Bob Reeves and the entire WMN promotion team on scoring this week’s No. 1 with Shelton’s “God Gave Me You.” The song is Shelton’s third chart-topper of the year, joining “Who Are You When I’m Not Looking” (2/21) and “Honey Bee” (6/20).

Vinny’s Biggest Loser Update The Biggest Loser’s Red team sent home its second player in as many weeks, and Trailer Choir’s Vinny Hickerson is tired of losing. “That’s one too many for me,” he says. “I don’t like to

lose at anything, and that one got me mad. I definitely feel the pressure. I’m looking at guys my size who are dropping crazy numbers every week. But every time I drop 10, someone else drops 15.”

Vince Gill Guitar Slinger (MCA) His first album in five years is also the first project recorded start-to-finish at Gill’s home studio, which many radio pros recently had the pleasure of visiting. Wife Amy Grant and daughters Jenny, Sarah and Corrina contribute guest vocals. “The most important thing is to serve the song,” Gill

says of his many roles as writer, producer, musician and singer.

Toby Keith Clancy’s Tavern (Show Dog-Universal) The title track tells the story of the bar first mentioned in Keith’s 2005 hit “Honkytonk U” and, as he says, “This isn’t fiction.” The video for “Red Solo Cup,” the only track Keith didn’t write, has exploded on the Web with upwards of 100,000 views daily. Keith produced the album, and frequent co-writer

Bobby Pinson gets a “Wrangler Producer” credit. Tavern’s deluxe edition includes four more 2010 Incognito Bandito live tracks.

Tuesday’s show features combined teams. “It’s the Halloween show, so it’s definitely one of the most fun episodes,” Hickerson says. “We get to see some serious Vinny on this one, not just fun-loving Vinny. There’s a temptation and the challenge is really cool. The competition really heats up because there are no teams – we’re just one big group. If you haven’t caught any of the episodes yet, this is definitely a good week to start watching.”

Q&A With Jeff Kapugi (continued from page 1) Anythingspecific? Top 40 and pop guys tend to do bigger-than-life/out-of-the-box things better than most formats. Country’s audience lends itself to that mentality. Rhythmic audiences, for example, are just as loyal. You ask them to jump, and they say how high? You can do that with this audience, too, because of their loyalty to the artists and the station. Anytime a station gets a new PD, whether or not they’ve done the format previously, they bring something new, which is good. I’m excited about getting into ‘USN and looking at it for what it is and how it engages the audience musically and with its stationality. That’s my No. 1 goal. While you’re still on the outside looking in, what do you think of Country radio? It’s a very exciting time right now; the format is on fire. Obviously on the pop side, we see all the artists crossing over from Country. There’s more than ever right now, with Taylor Swift, Lady A, and the Jason Aldean/Kelly Clarkson duet. I really respect how the communities support each other, the way the artists and radio support each other. I’m excited to get involved in that. There’s a saying that good programming is good programming, no matter the format. Agreed. Regardless of what music format you’re in, you have to accept what your audience perceives their lifestyle to be. I’ve programmed Top 40 stations the majority of my career, so I was hanging out in clubs, listening to club music. I’m currently programming Hot AC stations and going to see Matt Nathanson and

Matt Kearney at small clubs. Now I’ll be going to Country shows and maybe heading to Nashville. So you become a chameleon to whatever format you are and I don’t think you have to have been born and raised in it to live it, understand it or program it. WUSN has been a consistent performer for years. That said, is it capable of jumping to the next level, for example, like its sister station, WYCD/Detroit, did this year? That’s a tough question right now. I don’t have all those cards turned over just yet. But I’ll always set the bar as high as possible. Outside of some suburban signals, as a stand-alone Country station in Chicago, there are greater expectations. Next year, US99 celebrates its 30th year, so it is a very heritage station. I’m looking to inject a little more fun factor and audience engagement. Buddy [Scott] has been in there for about 18 months, and I think he’s been able to move the meter quite a bit to where the station has come out of the bottom end of the top 10 to the middle part. Obviously, we want to get it to be a consistent player inside the top five, especially since we own the format there.

How does your background lend itself to the additional role of VP/Country? I’m a pretty good systems guy. I’m a good communicator. I love to touch base with guys in my format. When I was last with Clear Channel, I was RVPP for Baltimore and Washington, which also included the satellite markets. At one point I was overseeing almost 70 radio stations. The CBS Country stations won’t be as difficult in terms of numbers, but these are more high-profile stations in bigger markets. And many of them are engaged in some real battles – Seattle, Charlotte, Tampa and even Phoenix. To what degree do you get involved as VP/Country? The way it has worked for me in the AC/Hot AC world is sharing best practices and really digging in the trenches where it’s most needed. Where we’re getting beat, or not meeting expectations, will be where the majority of my efforts will be used. That’s the way all of our format captains are working now for CBS. Everybody is pretty sensitive right now to centralized programming philosophies in radio companies, so when you talk about systems, does that in any way mean station-level decisions will be made differently? No. The most refreshing thing about working for CBS Radio for the past year has been the autonomy. We communicate with corporate, but they trust the good decisions and ideas we have. We use corporate support as sounding boards, just as I’ll do as VP/Country, to help people make the right decisions. But at the end of the day, as they say, “Your bat, your ball, your butt.” You take the swings and you’re responsible for the result. It’s great that we all have that accountability, and that’s what I love about this company. Reach Kapugi at [email protected].
