Thanks: earlier this year a group of Canowindra High School students assisted the Canowindra Community Players with the painting of scenery backdrops and, as a thank you, last week the school received a $200 donation to go towards the art depart-ment. Thank you to the Players for their kind donation, & the marvellous opportunity this experience provided the students. Containers: the Food Technology department of Canowindra High request donations of plastic storage containers of any shape or size ie margarine containers, ice‐cream containers. All containers need to have lids please & can be dropped off at the school for Mr Smyth. Size: thank you all for accepting the smaller 4 page format of The Phoenix after the 'hiatus' last month. FIRST HEALTH COUNCIL FOR CANOWINDRA The newly formed Canowindra Health Council attended their orientation last week, held at the Community Health Centre by Western NSW Local Health District Community Engagement Co-ordinator, Illona Parnaby. The orientation included discussion on the roles of Health Councils, the Local Health District Board and Medicare Locals as well as an over-view of the services provided to the com-munity through Canowindra Health Service.

YOUNG FARMERS NSW Farmers will be holding a function for younger farmers at the Eugowra Bowling Club on Tuesday evening 25 June 2013. "The idea of the evening is to bring together the younger farmers and their partners from around our District Council area, whether they are members of the association or not," Maree McKay, Chair of the Canowindra District Council of NSW Farmers. "Tegan Knok who is the Chair of the NSW Farmers' Young Farmer Council is coming along to meet everyone, there will a meal provided and a fun quiz, and I emphasis fun," Maree said. "Invitations will go out to farmers who we know and who are under 35 or so as well as members but of course we don't know every-one. "I'd encourage anyone who would like to join us at the Eugowra Bowling Club on Tuesday 25 June to contact myself on 0428 443 515 or Frances Anderson 6859 2202," Mrs McKay said.

A TASTE OF BRAZIL COMES TO CANOWINDRA Sydney-based singer/guitarist Anna Salleh was first captivated by the beauty of Brazilian music as a child, when she saw the film 'Black Orpheus'. It introduced her to the enchanting world that is bossa nova and much more. Over the years, Anna’s vocals have featured in world/jazz ensembles from Sydney to Melbourne, and Kuala Lumpur to the Edinburgh Festival. Most recently she spent three months in Rio de Janeiro performing with local musicians, seeking out the wisdom of bossa nova elders and other teachers, and deepening her understanding of Brazilian music. Her journey of musical discovery led to an ABC radio documentary, a show and live CD, which was launched to full houses in both Sydney and Brisbane last year, and has been enjoying national airplay since. As well as performing a gorgeous selection of Brazilian tunes Anna interprets gems from other genres. “I pay homage to music that has communicated an essence to me – of joy, of sorrow, or something less tangible – but no less moving,” says Anna. “From the irrepressible beat of sambas to the enchanting melodies of bossa novas and choros; from the joy of Ella Fitzgerald to the dreaming of Joni Mitchell; and from the soaring purity of Eva Cassidy to the passionate Ladino depth of Yasmin Levy.” Anna is touring Western NSW now, accompanied by Stan Valacos on double bass and Brazilian 7-string guitar, and will be performing next Friday 14 June 7pm at Taste Canowindra. HISTORICAL FUTURE FOR GENERATIONS Thanks to good management and hard work over the years, the Canowindra Historical Society is in a sound financial position. It also has a loyal membership of around 100 people and enjoys support from many local business and the Cabonne Council, but the Society needs your help. We need volunteers. We need people who will donate a couple of hours of their time every now and then to open the museum, do a bit of cleaning, a bit of maintenance, a bit of administrative work. We need people who are interested in help-ing to build on the work that’s been done over the last forty five years to ensure that the community’s history is kept safe and relevant for future generations. Without that new input the continued operation of the Society and Museum may be compromised. This is your history Canowindra. What can you do? Whatever your skills are, they will be put to good use. Commencing in a few weeks, a series of open days will be held at the Museum to re-introduce the community to the keeping-place of its history. These days will also incorporate training sessions for new and potential guides and will be advertised in The Phoenix. STEPPING UP THE PACE Now construction of the path has started, the generosity of the community is being realised. "Having been part of the Canowindra Fitness Path working party, from the outset it is gratifying to see the commencement of the ground works for this anticipated health initiative in our town", said David Francis, one of the dynamic Fitness Path working group. Lodge Canowindra was very proud to contrib-ute to the cost of the work by presenting a cheque for the sum of $1,400. This money was raised at the recent Balloon Glow event at this year's National Ballooning Championships, and brings the total raised by Lodge members for the path to $3,450. The Fitness Path project also received a $300 cheque for assisting with catering at the re-cent, very successful Canowindra Community Players production "Panic Stations". The next fundraising effort will be the canteen for the Vintage Enduro event being held at "Broadview" on Longs Corner Road over the long weekend. So if you are looking for some-thing different to do this weekend, head on out with your family to see some great motor-cycle action and have lunch whilst supporting the construction of a great community asset.

CALL TO ARTISTS: STAND TALL AND DELIVER! Maybe you are an artist, or chances are that you will know someone who would like to have a go at share their creative talents. Later this year, the River Bank Gallery is holding two people's choice exhibitions that are open to anyone who wants to participate: 'TALLS 2013'; and 'Stand and Deliver - The Life and Times of Ben Hall'. Both of these exhibitions open Saturday 7 September. The 'TALLS 2013' exhibition is one of the Gallery's most popular annual exhibitions that most of you will be familiar with. It has been successfully running for 8 years and attracts more artists each year. The theme is open and the idea is that each artist parts on the same sized canvas 12'' x 24'' with the canvas oriented in portrait, or 'tall' fashion. The results are diverse and artists have always come up with wonderful paintings within these constraints. KNIGHT FOR THE DAY? Central West based charity cycling team ‘Four Fit Ladies’ are auctioning off a day with the Newcastle Knights this June on Ebay! The fantastic item is for four people to ‘Be a Newcastle Knight for the Day’ includes front row tickets behind the player’s bench at a home game, a chance to meet the players and coaching staff, a tour of the change rooms pre-game and an opportunity to gain autographs in the change rooms post-game! “This is a chance of a lifetime for any Knights fan and is truly a ‘money can’t buy experience’ which has been kindly donated by the Newcastle Knights,” said Jess Ware, member of Four Fit Ladies. The cycling team will be embarking on an epic fundraising adventure in November, cycling 450km from Vietnam to Cambodia. The challenge is to raise funds for Arthritis NSW, which is a non-government health charity that seeks to improve the quality of life of those affected by arthritis and other musculoskeletal conditions. The team have been raising funds for Arthritis NSW since December 2012 primarily through-out the Central West. “We have had raffles, trivia nights, market stalls, auctions and many other fundraising events. So far we have raised almost $30,000”. Jess Ware said. The ‘Be a Newcastle Knight for the Day’ experience will be listed on Ebay for 10 days, beginning 5 June and ending 14 June. NBN Information Day: 12 June 2013 Regional Development Australia Central West will receive $25,000 in funding from the Australian Government for a Connecting Communities in the Central West Project, one of 14 new initiatives being delivered across regional areas to capitalise on the advantages of the National Broadband Network (NBN). The Central West project is in response to NBN fixed wireless being rollout in the region. RDA Central West will provide information on NBN fixed wireless to small business, not-for-profit organisations, schools and community members, with a local meeting to be held at the Canowindra Services and Citizens Club, next Wednesday 12 June from 11:30am to 5:30pm. Minister for Regional Australia, Regional Development and Local Government, the Hon Simon Crean MP, announced Australian Government funding of about $500,000 for 14 projects to be delivered by RDA committees. Four of the projects will be collaboratively delivered by RDA committees across their regional boundaries. “These projects will encourage regional communities to engage with the possibilities of the NBN through local expos, road shows and other activities,” Mr Crean said. “It is important to remember that the NBN is only the highway. The challenge for the RDA committees is to build the applications that will be the vehicles on the highway.”

CANOWINDRA RUGBY The Canowindra Pythons played host to the Molong Magpies on Saturday, with the predicted wet weather arriving. The game started at a fast pace, however it was the Pythons to have the upper hand for the majority of the first half. Scrums have been a dominate structure this year, with boys like Jordan Irvine, Stuey Gavin and Deano leading from the front, and Maxie O'Ryan and Tom English providing the strength in second row. With the Pythons attacking in the Magpies quarter for a few plays a penalty was soon awarded to the Pythons and Alex Grant's golden boot slotted 3 points over for the boys. Soon the boys found themselves back in the Magpies 10m zone. With Adam Nash finding himself millimetres from the try line, Half Todd Wyburn threw the ball out wide for Alex Grant to launch himself at the line and cross for a well deserved try which he converted. With the half time whistle about to sound Molong spread the ball wide and scored a converted try to leave the score at 10-7 in favour of the men in blue. The second half turned into a real slog fest in the soaking conditions with both teams making a few breaks but handling errors cost any tries. Alex Grant slotted another penalty goal for the Pythons with 15 left on the clock. However the Magpies back line swooped onto a loose ball and scored a try out wide to bring the score to 13-12 still in favour of the Pythons. The next 5 minutes of the game was a very tense affair with both teams picking up the pace a little, though the Canowindra Pythons held on for a great win against the Molong outfit. Points for the day went to Dan Bowd 3 for a great "captains knock"; Alex Grant picked up another 2 points for a great game; and Jordan Irvine and Iain Talbolt got a point each. Players' Player went to Bowser also. This weekend is the long weekend bye and the week after the Pythons travel to Grenfell to take on the Panthers. Also the Grenfell Golden Oldies will be in action before the main game, and they have asked if there are any interested players to come over for a run.

TIGERS VERSUS COWBOYS Canowindra Tigers first grade was hosted by Gooloogong on a very wet Saturday afternoon for round 8 of the Woodbridge Cup 2013 competition. The boys played well coming home 34-10 winners. Try scorers were Dan Bowman, Brad Bowman, Aaron Earsman, Jayden Brown and Tyson 2. Rob Burn converted 5 out of 6 to make it a good result for the game. 3 points and players player to Tom Roth, 2 points to Sam O and 1 went to Nick Willson. The Tigers youth League played Grenfell in Grenfell on Saturday morning, winning 22-10. With several under 16’s backing up from their morning game to give the boys a hand, the Youth were in a great position form the onset to bring home a win.

The Tigers held their annual event on Saturday night with this years theme a Bow Tie Ball. Friends, members and Tigers players attended the evening of games, music and fun.
