HEADITORIAL
Dear Parents and
Students,
Despite the ferocious
weather at the
beginning of the week -
which rather caught us
on the hop -(and I'm
grateful to girls, staff and
parents for their good
sense and forbearance
during a difficult 24
hours) we have been
treated to three
marvellous
entertainments in the
school hall this week. The
first was a recital by
Dame Felicity Lott in aid
of the Brighton
Springboard Festival. Her
voice is a joy and we
were very happy to host
such a prestigious event
at BHHS. The second was
our annual Ides of March
Lecture, delivered this
year by Dr Nigel Spivey
who is senior lecturer in
Classics at Emmanuel
College, Cambridge. His
thesis was 'The Classical
Body' and all of us,
students, staff and
parents, were captivated
by his arguments and by
his highly entertaining
delivery- I shall never
again look at David
Beckham without
thinking, 'Polykleitos!' The
third event, and the most
special, was the hustings
for election to the Head
Girl team. Fourteen very
brave young women

Staff Red Nose Bake Off
In preparation for comic relief, the teachers went head to head
in order to win the title of star baker! On Friday the 8th March
the teachers competed in the BHHS bake off. The competition
was full of creativity and from this came ten uniquely styled
biscuits. Miss James was crowned star baker with her strawberry
and white chocolate biscuits. The event was recorded and will
be shown to the rest of the school in order to raise money for
comic relief. Harriet Freestone
On Friday 8th March, 9 teachers embarked on the challenge of
a bake off in aid of Comic Relief. The task was to create a
biscuit using one of the three simple methods; rubbing in,
creaming or melting. Once they had chosen a method, the
teachers had to add their own ingredients to fit the theme of
Comic Relief. Some teachers added chocolate and decorated
in the theme of Comic Relief and some added red food
colouring and other red coloured ingredients. We were both
really impressed with the high standard of baking (even from Mr
Edmunds!) that was presented and we both commend you for
your hard work and organisation, especially Ms Baldwin. We
had criteria to go by so our marking was split into different
categories. They were based around the presentation,
organisation, quality of the bake, adherence to the red nose
theme and of course, if they were edible! Luckily there all were.
So we finally had to make a decision and it was all very close. In
the end, we agreed that for her little teddy bear biscuits
decorated with chocolate and strawberries, Miss James was
the winner. The final places were as follows
Alicia Phillips and Nuriya Powell
1st Ms James
2nd Ms Baldwin
3rd Mr Sherwood
Year 7 Red Nose cakes
In our year 7 Home Economics lessons we have been raising
money for Comic Relief by making Red Nose cupcakes and
selling them. We enjoyed making the cakes and decorating the
tops of them. We melted chocolate and decorated them with
sweets (mainly red ones). So far we have raised £20. In a couple
of weeks time, when all of the money has been collected, we
hope that year 7 will raise £100 or more for Comic Relief, from HE. Almi Nerurkar and Kalea Stagg (7M)

have addressed the
whole school in
assemblies his week.
Everyone was so
impressed by their poise,
passion and genuine
affection for the school.
What excellent role
models they all were for
younger girls! All the
votes will be counted
today and results will be
announced on Monday.
Whatever the outcome,
every one of the girls
should be proud of what
they did this week.
Have a good weekend.

CULTURE VULTURES
We’ve had a really inspiring
Culture Vultures term with
sessions on Alan Ackybourn
and Artificial Intelligence and
we are sure that everyone has
checked their schedules and is
looking forward to Mr Sherwood
completing our hat trick of
inspiration with his session on
‘Representations of Joan of
Arc’. Those students who were
involved in the fabulous Temple
Project Qualification last year
may recognise this as Mr
Sherwood’s own TPQ.
Unfortunately, having whetted
your appetite, we have had to
postpone this Culture Vultures
session because of the new
date for the Fashion Show.
Music News
On Wednesday this week BHHS
hosted a recital given by Dame
Felicity Lott. The concert was
organised by the local
Springboard Music and Drama
Festival and it was fantastic to
see such a wonderful performer
in action. She enthralled the
audience with a selection of
Schubert and Schumann lieder
as well some wonderful British
repertoire. It was a real
pleasure to be able to sit back
and enjoy Flott’s masterful
delivery. Associated Board
Music examinations will be
taking place in the music house
on Wednesday and Thursday
next week. The timetable has
been published on the music
page of the portal and is on
the music house notice board.
Please make sure that you
arrive in the music house at
least 10 minutes before your
appointment. Following our
successful Choral Concert last
week I need to return the Rutter
scores to the library. I am
currently lacking about 20
scores so I would be grateful if
these could be returned to me
as soon as possible so that I do
not have to chase you up.
Many congratulations to all
BHHS girls who have performed
so well at the recent
Springboard Festival. If you
were placed in your class
please bring your certificates
into school so that they can be
presented in Celebration
Assembly at the end of term.

WE SUCCEEDED IN OUR
RICE CHALLENGE!
Many thanks to everyone who
helped us to meet the Rice
Challenge within Fair Trade
Fortnight. A small team of very
committed girls from Years 8
and 9 gave up many lunch
times selling rice outside the
library in the senior school, and
a group of Y10 students sold
some before the screening of
‘Town of Runners’. Together
they sold 90kg of rice! If a
farmer in Malawi can sell 90kg
of rice at a fair price then he
will have sufficient income to
send one of his children to high
school, and, as we all know,
education is one of the most
effective ways to escape
poverty. We hope you enjoyed
the rice and have had a
chance to try out one of the
recipes. If the rice proves
popular then we may invest in
some more!

6th Form Theatre Trip
On Friday 8th March the 6th
Form Theatre Studies students
braved the persistent rain on
their trip to the recently opened
St James' Theatre in London, to
see the revival of Max Stafford-
Clarke's critically acclaimed
production of 'Our Country's
Good' by Timberlake
Wertenbaker, and for us it did
not disappoint! The cast skilfully
multi-roled, fully absorbing us
into a world of sometimes brutal
officers, oppressed convicts
and native aborigines of 'the
new world' - Australia. It was an
intense and thought-provoking
production which carried us
seamlessly from scenes of
darkest despair to moments of
poignant comedy. The set and
lighting were also superb,
helping to transport us to the
centre of the characters'
journey. All in all it was a
moving and thoroughly
enjoyable experience that we
would highly recommend.

CREATIVE WRITING
An important message to all our talented writers: check out the
portal page to find details of the SCJ poetry prize, judged by
Moniza Alvi and the wonderful Catherine Smith who ran some
inspirational poetry workshops for our year 9 this Book Week. The
deadline is 30th April and, as well as some very motivating cash
prizes, this competition raises awareness and funds for those
young people at risk from heart conditions. On our English
Competitions Portal Page you will also find details of a Brighton
Festival Competition – the Peacock Poetry Prize. This year’s
theme is ‘The Changing City’. There is a FREE workshop
associated with this competition on offer this Saturday. And
don’t forget to check out the Brighton Festival and Fringe
Festival brochures for some fantastic performances, talks and
workshops. These include a play by John Burrows, father of Stella
Clark in 11A, whose play ‘Where Late the Sweet Birds Sang’ is at
the Friends’ Meeting House as part of the Fringe Festival from the
20-26 May. With statues coming to life and described as ‘Carry
On’ meets Hilary Mantel, this sounds like a mad must-see. We
are also delighted to pass on some good news from Ros Barber
who judged our marvellous Mary Schofield House Short Story
Competition last week and ran a brilliant workshop for our U6 on
‘Dr Faustus‘. Ros’s wonderfully engaging verse novel, ‘The
Marlowe Papers’, has made the 20-strong Women's Prize for
Fiction (formerly the Orange Prize) long list. She’s one of six first-
time novelists and eight Brits to make this prestigious list. Ros says:
“Hilary Mantel could be heading for a historic triple, but I'm
happy to be in her company.”
Netball A BIG congratulations to the Under 14 Netball team who played in the SISNA tournament last Saturday. We played exceptionally well beating: Lancing College 7 - 2; Eastbourne College 6 - 5 and Roedean 5 - 3 Congratulations to the Under 12 B Netball team who beat PACA A team in the Brighton Schools’ League last night 14 – 5. See team photo. The girls put on magnificent performance and were a credit to the school. Well played. We came 3rd in our section. Ms Osborne, Head of PE

JUNIOR EDITORIAL
Dear Parents,
Thank you for your
support this week over
the school closure. It
seems that the whole
county was caught
unaware and journeys
home were severely
disrupted. A number of
staff (myself included)
ended up having to
have unexpected
sleepovers elsewhere!
Despite a few teething
problems, I am glad that
the online booking
system for parents has
been a huge
improvement on last
time. I do hope the
feedback will be helpful.
It is unfortunate that a
number of sporting
fixtures have had to be
cancelled recently but
could I please
encourage parents (and
girls) to keep an eye on
the fixtures list and
selection sheets. We
endeavour to put out our
best teams and hope
that players will be
available wherever
possible. We do have the
occasional Saturday
fixture (tournaments
mostly) and we would
really appreciate your
support in making girls
available or at least
giving us ample warning
if not so that we can
organise alternatives.
Best Wishes

OLD UNIFORM
DONATIONS
We were thrilled with the
response to our old uniform
collection and as you can see
they are bringing smiles to the
girls of Bungwanyi in Uganda.
Many thanks to parents and if
there are any other items out
there we are always delighted
to receive them.

YEAR 2 PARADISE PARK TRIP
Year 2 had a lovely day at ‘Paradise Park’ on Monday, albeit
wrapped up in many layers to defy the cold temperature! The
girls enjoyed learning more facts about dinosaurs, volcanoes and
earthquakes in the ‘Planet Earth’ exhibition, building upon what
we have been learning during our ‘Rumble and Roar’ topic. A
memorable highlight was travelling around the park on a
miniature train during a very pretty flurry of snow! Miss Dev and
Mrs King were very proud when staff members commented on
how ‘friendly, polite and well-behaved’ the girls were- well done
Year 2!
TRUST COMPETITION Gymnastics A huge congratulations to the 5 girls who represented us at the
Trust Gymnastics competition. This is an extremely high standard
competition with numerous representatives competing at
Regional and National levels. Our girls held their composure
and gave 110% determination to achieve an overall placing of
6th out of 9 schools and 5th in the Vault competition. A big
thank you to Olivia Crosby, who gave up her position in the
competition last minute to help out the Netballers who were
short of players due to illness. Congratulations to Scout who
performed her handspring vault unassisted for the first time,
and special mention to Jaia Sahota-Lyons, who participated
as a Year Three in a Year Six competition.
Netball
Well done to the U11 Netball team who participated in the Trust
Netball Rally. I think it’s fair to say the high standard of play took
our girls by surprise. However they adapted well to a big change
in positions due to illness and absences. They worked hard on
their dodging and use of space. Overall the girls finished 5th out
of 9 schools in their group, narrowly missing out on a place in the
finals.
IAPS NETBALL
On Thursday 7th March the U11 Netball team represented us at the IAPS Netball Tournament at
Roedean. These girls really learned a lot from their experiences at Trust the day before and played
some very nice Netball. Particular mention to Lucy Swaine who developed her assertive
defending and intercepted brilliantly and to Clemmie Copeland who certainly deserves most
improved player in the tournaments!
CLUB CANCELLATIONS Wednesday 20th Study Support for years 3 and 4 / Ceramics for year 5
Design & Technology for years 3 and 4 / Maths Games for year 2 /
Wednesday, March 6, 2013 Est. 1869 Brighton and Hove High School
Following an already exciting week, the girls will have gone home Friday evening to see their faces on the regional ITV news. It included a whole news piece covering a very successful re-enactment of a Suffragette march, including interviews and demonstrations from all of the year 5 and 6 girls.
If you missed it or you’d like to watch it again, here’s the link to view it again: http://bhhs.gdst.net/videos.html
Here is a selection of photos and clippings from the week and we would like to say a big thank you to all involved, and also to Bill Murray of “Murray Media”, who helped us greatly in securing such great coverage which has portrayed our Junior school in an excellent light.
