Principal’s Message
With two significant parent events this week, I cannot
begin the Principal’s Message this week without thank-
ing our parents for their continued support for our Col-
lege and of course the support you always show to the
events we hold to support and care for the students at
our wonderful College.
On Wednesday evening, the Sixth Form Hall held our
second Year 11 Revision Strategy Evening. The pur-
pose of the evening was to further support our Year 11
students with their preparation for the Summer Examina-
tions. Our previous evening had a focus on coursework
and controlled tasks and steps that were needed to
achieve the best grades in these. The second evening,
held last week, had a much more direct focus on Revi-
sion Strategy and techniques to support students now
that, in many areas, controlled tasks are nearing com-
pletion. The feedback, as is always the case I am de-
lighted to say, has been overwhelmingly positive.
Our second parent event this week was our Year 9 Op-
tions Evening, held last night, on Thursday, 4th Febru-
ary. The evening began with an explanation of the pro-
cess and the very detailed and clear Options Booklet.
The timeline indicated in the Options Booklet has very
clear deadlines and steps needed over the next few
months to ensure that the best options are chosen for
our students and the timetable that best fits their individ-
ual needs can be built. It was wonderful to see a full
Sports Hall during the talks and even more the excite-
ment and exuberance around the Upper College site as
students and parents explored what best fits career
plans, interests and future aspirations. As was men-
tioned, the College is here to help over the next few
months and so please do not hesitate to contact us for
any advice, guidance or support needed.
Finally, I would like to draw your attention to the notice
to the right regarding our Lent Mass & Communion ses-
sions each Friday morning over the next few weeks. It
would be lovely to see as many parents able to attend
these as is possible, as we prepare for our Easter cele-
brations in and beyond the College. Thank you all again
for your continued support of our work at the College.

Issue 20 5th February 2016
Prayer taken and adapted from www.catholicdoor.com
Lord, make each of us an instrument of your love. May we see each circumstance in our life as an opportunity to
grow in love. Lord, when we are tempted to be impatient, help us to be patient; when we are tempted to become
unkind, help us to be kind; when we are tempted to become jealous, help us to be tolerant; help us to be loyal to
those you have given us to love; help us to believe in them, even when they do not believe in themselves. Lord, all
gifts and powers come from you. All will come to an end, with one important exception, the gift of love. Amen.

Thank you for your support so far with regards to our fort-
nightly Literacy Focus.
Our current focus is on:
Apostrophes are used for two main reasons:
This is when words are abbreviated (shortened) and letters missed out. We use an apostrophe in the place of those missing letters e.g. wouldn’t (would not). This was the last fortnightly focus.
Our new focus is on using apostrophes to show ownership…
We also use an apostrophe when we want to show that something belongs to someone e.g.
The apostrophe is put at the end of the name of the ‘owner’ and followed by an s. Only put an apostrophe if you are showing ownership –not in any word that ends in an s!
Literacy Focus
Theme: Love
You are the father who welcomes home the prodi-
gal who has wandered far; you are the father who
prepares a meal when others would simply ignore;
you are the father whose love extends beyond our
thoughts or minds; you are the father who knows
our hearts and yet loves us as we are. You are the
father whose word we trust, in whose presence we
have no fear; you are the father whose tender
touch makes a wounded spirit whole; you are the
father whose only son was born that he might die;
you are the father whose gracious love we cele-
brate.
Please support us in our bid to develop literacy
skills and accuracy by helping your child to
check through his/her work and look out for the
correct use of apostrophes.

Christ the King College Weekly News
5th February 2016
Year 10 Netball Christ the King College vs Medina College
A recent match was organised between Christ the King College and Medina College as both teams enjoyed playing each other at the last tournament and it was a very evenly matched game, so this was the much anticipated rematch. The Christ the King College girls were very excited as they were still buzzing from their fantastic performance in the tournament. Christ the King College started off very well, winning the first quarter they showed great team work and really started to gel as a team. Medina College came back at us in the second quarter showing some great linking play and some very direct passing. In the third quarter Christ the King Col-lege played well, however Medina College kept fighting back at them and Christ the King Col-lege struggled to find their rhythm. The final quarter, Christ the King College really upped their game, they had taken on board the advice given in the team talk and they started to show what they were really made of! The match finished with Christ the King College winning 11-4. A
great match!
This team has come on leaps and bounds since September, Margaret Plaga quipped that ‘Its because we have started listening to you in training Miss!!!’. If there was an award for ‘Most improved team of the year’ they would be outright winners! Also a mention has to go out to Jasmiin Wellenreuther, an exchange student from Germany, who had never even heard of Netball before attending our College and now has become an invalu-
able member of the team!
Team: Bella Cuoghi-smith, Ellie Bacon, Hannah Cooper, Jasmiin Wellenreuther, Margaret
Plaga, Temeesha Hobbs, Bella Harvey.

Runners Get Muddy!
Two Isle of Wight Athletic Club members and Christ the king College students, travelled to Parliament Hill in London on Saturday, 30th January to compete in the South of England X Country Championships. Ellie Bacon (10 TBE) ran 4km in the Under 15 Girl’s race and Eden Crumplin (11JRB) ran 5km in the Under 17 Women’s race. The undulating muddy course was a tough challenge for the two young athletes but both ran strongly against over 200 competi-
tors with Ellie finishing in 44th position and Eden in 149th in their respective races.
Both girls enjoyed the experience and are now looking forward to the final competition in the
Hampshire X Country League in the New Forest before starting the track season in April.
Table Tennis Zone Final
The Girls Under 16 Hampshire Champions, Temeesha Hobbs, Sophie Westhorpe, Rosie Hancock, and Rebecca Pearce, all from Christ the King Col-lege, travelled to Morpeth School London on Sunday, 31st January to take part in
an ESTTA Team Zone Final.
The girls started their first fixture against Tanbridge House West Sussex, who they lost to last year. Temeesha and Rosie both won their two games, Sophie then picked up an extra victory
to win outright 5-3.
The girls romped to victory 7-1 in the next fixture.
In the 3rd fixture, they lost to a strong Bushey Academy from Hertfordshire. 7-1.
The final fixture left us tied with Dane Court Grammar School Broadstairs, a young but very
impressive side who had had experience at the Under 13 Nationals the previous year.
The Christ the King College girls fought valiantly and at the halfway point, of 2-2, it could have gone either way. Temeesha won again and Sophie and Rebecca won their first game. This however was short lived as they then lost 3-1 each. Rosie pulled a set back but too fell 3-1. Disappointingly, the girls missed out on the next national round by 1 solitary game! Truly heart wrenching stuff, however the girls played excellently throughout and will continue to drive on
for next year.
