BUMP, SET, SPIKE By Andrew Meagher, Rachael Barbush, Molly Dupin,

Isabella Abiuso, Colin Laubach, and Alex Bates

The middle school students are looking forward to

all the Catholic Schools Week activities but mostly

their attention is on the volleyball tournament. This

year there will be eight teams each coached by a

member of the faculty. The coaches are: Mrs.

Christy Morgan--Lt. Blue, Miss Becky Carr--

Green, Mrs. Karen Shaner--Purple, Mrs. Vickie

Bosso--Black/White, Mrs. Lucy Chubb--tie dye,

Mrs. Jacquelyn Castner--red, Mrs. B.J. Meagher--

yellow, and Ms. Rachel Allen--Gray. After the

students are assigned to a team, they will pick a

name and logo. After P.E. practice, the actual

tournament is scheduled for Friday of CSW. It is an

exciting and fun time for all the students because

lower grade students cheer for the middle school

teams. The volleyball tournament is a great example

of teamwork and Catholic school spirit. And it is all

topped off with a sundae party.

INVESTMENT LESSON By Mrs. Maureen Tyree

Registration for Chess Club at STS: $0 Dollars

Gas for the drive to Chess Club: $3 Dollars

Snacks to entertain my younger two

children during Chess Club: $5 Dollars

A Chess Board for my son to practice

the game: $7 Dollars

The look on my son’s face when he

beat his uncle in a game of chess: Priceless.

Even my younger children are getting into the game

of chess. They come with me to every lesson and to

every meeting of the Chess Club. Ms. Sherry

Patton, physical education teacher, makes it so

exciting; everyone within earshot gets caught up in

the fun. The life-size chess board makes it especially

engaging for the younger kids to learn.

Now, the gas to drive to school isn‘t actually

necessary. The gas is only necessary because I

volunteer to help with Chess Lessons and Chess

Club. I chose to volunteer for two reasons. One is

because I enjoy helping the kids learn to ―vroom‖

and ―slither‖ the pieces across the chess board. The

other is because I never learned to play chess as a

child and I don‘t want to be shown up by my 7-year

old, Houston, 1B.

Candidly, I chose Chess Club simply in hopes of

adding some critical thinking to my son‘s skill set. I

never expected my son to get so many life skills

from this endeavor. Sportsmanship, critical thinking,

strategic planning, thinking outside of the box, well,

outside the board, and a whole lot of fun no matter

what the weather is outside. I hope to see you and

your child at the next Chess Meeting. Just look out

for my son. He is getting good and, unfortunately,

yes, even better than me.

FINAL FALL NUMBERS FOR CHESS CLUB Lessons 36 Kindergartners, 28 1st and 2nd graders

Chess Club 77 members with an average attendance

of 52 members per week

Thank you to the Paladian Family who purchased

50 sets of colorful pieces so all students playing

chess during the school-wide, double elimination

Chess Tournament can have full size pieces to

compete against their peers. Look for the results in a

future Saints Shout!.

LANGUAGE ARTS BOOT CAMP By Alex Failla

Language Arts Boot Camp is coming to STS. The

students will be drilled on verb

parts, subject/verb agreement,

and parts of speech. There will

be a lot of marching and chant-

ing, (there is a linking verb

chant in the works) some stop

and give me three adjectives,

and maybe some sounding off.

We think it will be fun and a boost for learning those

pesky grammar rules. Sergeant Weltmer will put

the students through their paces during Catholic

Schools Week.

TIME TO SHOW YOUR STUFF By Tori Mooney and Claire McCarthy

Students will show their stuff and prove they have a

good knowledge of Catholicism by participating in

Religion Bowls during Catholic Schools Week. The

grades are split into teams, each team selects a cap-

tain, and the teams compete by answering questions

about religion. Everybody wins by gaining a better

understanding of their faith.

HARK, THE HERALD ANGELS SANG? By Isabella Abiuso, Daniel Delaney, Adam Leisenring,

Kelly Leisenring

What a great performance for the annual Christmas

Show from the students of STS! Students in grades 3

through 8 gave another stellar evening of

entertainment at the annual event that happened on

Dec. 17th at Trinity High School. Mrs. BJ Meagher

directed the band, the choirs, and the play, with

special help from Mr. Edward Smith on the piano.

The band, including special numbers from the After

Hours Band, played a variety of songs. The audience

was immediately thrown into the spirit of the

season! The choirs also sung to the heavens with an

eclectic mix of traditional and contemporary songs.

The students spent a lot of

time preparing for the

grand finale of the

evening, THE PLAY!

This year‘s story included

a contest with Choirs of

Angels from each grade

competing in front of a

panel of judges, similar to ―American Idol.‖ The

winning choir would sing for the Baby Jesus. The

plot begins when a voice from God, Joey Borza,

instructs Angel Gabriele, Mitch Weaver, to find a

special choir of angels to sing at a ―very important

event.‖ Gabriele is assisted in his quest by his

secretary, Angelica, played by Olivia Berrigan.

The judges were 8th graders, Patrick Madden,

Kelsey Barr, and Matt Grogan. If you‘ve ever

seen ―American Idol‖ on TV, you probably

recognized who each of the judges was

impersonating, as they judged the performances of

each angel choir.

Each class angel choir was introduced by 8th graders

acting as spokespersons or agents for their special

choir. The Seraphims Choir, 3rd grade, was

introduced by Jenna Deppen and Sam Lund. The

choir gave a very ―heavenly‖ performance of ―Hark

The Seraphim.‖ Alex Ponti introduced the 4th

grade, The Rapper Choir, which was quite

entertaining with their version of ―Can‘t Touch

That.‖ Next, the 5th grade Cowboy/Country Choir

did a fine job at square dancing to a unique

arrangement of ―Angels From The Realms of

Glory.‖

There are a variety of talents at STS! Monica

Hunter introduced the 5th grade and Maggie

Barbush introduced the 6th grade which performed a

calypso/reggae version of ―Angels We Have Heard

on High‖ and were joined by talented Brett Becker,

Dominic Cioccocioppo, and Matthew Gregoire on

percussion and Chris Kostick from Trinity High

School on steel drum. The 7th and 8th grade

performed together and opened with Vikram

Shenoy, as Michael the Archangel. He stunned the

audience with his version of the Elvis hit, ―Jail

House Rock.‖ We got a show of poodle skirts, silk

scarves, t-shirts, leather jackets, saddle shoes and

many ponytails swinging and dancing to the rock-

and-roll music!

In the end, one angel was chosen, Angelica, the

secretary, played by Olivia Berrigan. She sang

―Silent Night‖ beautifully for the Baby Jesus, while

Mary, Courtney Brown, and Joseph, Austin

Christie, listened and watched on the scene. There

were also moving solos by Amanda Foody, Tory

Kreiser, Tatiana Shank, and Peter Walker,

singing ―The First Noel.‖ They did sound like

angels from above! Watch for the date next

December when the talent gathers again to provide

the audience with a highlight of the Christmas

season.

CONSIDER ST. THERESA SCHOOL Our mission at St. Theresa School

5A AND 5B CONTINUE TRADITION Once again, the Christmas Eve Liturgy was a

moving and beautiful celebration. Every year the

children show their reverence to the Lord by

portraying the Christmas story. The children read

beautifully and were poised as they faced the

crowded church. There were a number of people

who commented on the children's reading. One

person commented that she had been to this liturgy

25 times and thinks this year‘s was the best. Mrs.

Rhonda Houseman was impressed with the

children and their commitment to honor

Jesus. Participants included—

Poetry Contest with 21 poems chosen for

publication. STS received a "Poetic Achievement

Award" in honor of the number of students accepted

for publication in the anthology, A Celebration of

Young Poets. This honor is given to the top 10% of

the schools that enter the competition. STS is now

eligible to apply for a $250 language arts grant.

WHICH IS BETTER? This is the question Mrs.

Rhonda Houseman posed

to her class. Before

Christmas, the students finished reading ―The Lion,

the Witch, and the Wardrobe.‖ After Christmas,

their job was to decide which was better, the book or

the movie. While watching the movie, the class kept

a list of the differences and then discussed if the

liberties taken by the movie made it more exciting

than the book. It was a toss up. Half of the class

thought the book was better and the movie would

have been better if it kept more to the book. The

other half of the class thought the movie made the

story better. Whichever side was taken, the class

agreed that C. S. Lewis created a classic.

RAPPERS IN 5B As an introduction to poetry, students in Mrs. Vikki

DeBastiani’s 5B had to listen to rap music. You

heard right, rap music! Rap music has all the

components of poetry and uses rhyme as a tool to

get a message through. The students listened to the

song ―Just the Two of Us‖ by Will Smith because of

the positive message and no objectionable language.

After listening to the song, students discussed what

the artist had to say, how he said it, and the overall

feeling of the song. They then discussed positive

messages they can give to the world using rap

music. Students were divided into groups and had to

write a poem using the positive message and put the

poem to rap music. Each group performed their song

and then called it a RAP!

HOGWARTS SCHOOL It's Harry Potter time in 5A again and Mrs. Rhonda

Houseman’s 5A is reading ―Harry Potter and the

Sorcerer's Stone.‖ The class has been sorted into the

four houses for a competition. The Houses earn

points for completing work, behavior, achievement,

and various activities. There is a stiff competition

brewing. Gryffindor is in the lead with Ravenclaw a

close second. Slytherin and Hufflepuff are close

behind. Stay tuned to find out which House wins the

House Cup.

Gryffindor--Olivia Gilbertson, Hannah Tedesco,

Traci Pressley, Alex Lund, Katee Killmeyer

Hufflepuff--Philip Deppen, Patrick Brennan, Nick

Centurione, Cameron Bour, Joe Martin, Nicco

Lazzara

Ravenclaw--Nora Shelly, Lauren Esser, Lauryn

Walker, Kelsee Baker, Ann Margaret Kennedy

Slytherin--Nick Bates, John Kline, George Hempt,

Ryan Kelly, Jordan Claypool, Kevin Hills

HOW DOES A CLASS HAVE FUN? 5A had a great time at their Christmas party by

dividing into groups to make reindeer of the human

kind. One student of the group was selected to be

the reindeer. Pantyhose, with a hole cut out and the

feet snipped off, was placed over the victim‘s, oops,

volunteer's head. The rest of the group blew up

balloons to stuff up the legs of the pantyhose. The

legs were then tied with ribbon and a bow was

placed on the reindeer's nose. More pictures are on

Mrs. Rhonda Houseman’s bulletin board. If a

student did not get the chance to be a reindeer,

maybe they got the chance to be a snowman. New

groups were given a roll of toilet paper, a hat, scarf,

and a carrot. One volunteer became the snowman

wrapped in toilet paper. The first team finished was

declared the winner. After the snowman contest,

there was a snowball fight. For some reason, Mrs.

Houseman seemed to get the worst part of this deal

when the class ganged up on her to pelt her with

snowballs. It's a good thing that she has a sense of

humor! Oh, and another thing was the yummy

breakfast--pancakes, sausage, fruit, pastries, milk,

juice, and many other items. Another great day in

5A!

SPELL(ING) BOUND In mid-December, STS middle school students

participated in the Scripps Howard Spelling Bee

sponsored by The Patriot-News. There were some

tense moments as students spelled words like

languid, accomplice, vertigo, and hideous. Trevor

Smith correctly spelled the winning word, rubric

and now moves on to the next level. Good luck,

Trevor! Coordinator of the Spelling Bee was Mrs.

Stephanie McCarthy. Mrs. Lynn Kaufold was the

announcer.

‘TIS A MYSTERY Mrs. Stephanie McCarthy's 6th grade language

arts classes have read ―The Westing Game‖ as a

class and completed a puzzle book report on the

mystery. For independent reading they read other

mysteries and wrote book reports.

ANCIENT HISTORY The 6th graders are currently

studying Greek and Roman

mythology. They are researching

gods and goddesses and writing

research reports in the form of

mini-books. Additionally, they get

to practice using MLA citation

style by citing their sources. The mythology unit

will conclude with the reading of ―The Adventures

of Ulysses.‖

BEEEEEEP...I KNOW THAT ONE! Quiz Bowl season has come and gone again in a

flash, almost as quickly as one must press the buzzer/

button to have the chance to give the answer to the

question! The 7th and 8th grade teams included from

7th grade: Rachael Barbush, Angelina Crist, Molly

Dupin, Colleen Laubach, Jared McDermott and

Jack Shelly. They had a great first year, closing with

a victory over St. Joe‘s 90-85! The 8th grade team

included: Austin Christi, Amanda Foody, Matt

Grogan, Adam Leisenring, Tom McKelvey, Alex

Ponti, Dan Scarpelli, Trevor Smith, and Mitch

Weaver. Most of the 8th grade team returned this

year after being on the team last year.

Mrs. Diane Weltmer, coach and teacher/moderator,

encourages the students as they practice and prepare

for the three meets per season. The meets are after

school hours at Trinity High School. The parents,

who drive the teams to Trinity, often stay to enjoy

the meet and to test their own brain power as they

listen to the competition.

GEOGRAPHY BEE By Oliver Seneca, Kaitlyn Anderson and Michael Wilson

The first round of the National Geographic

Geography Bee began

in Mrs. Lucy Chubb’s

class on January 11th. It

was fun! The players

for three rounds had

three choices for

answers. After those

rounds, it was all brains

and no help. To prepare

for the competition,

students were encouraged to go online at

nationalgeographic.com and play the ―geo bee‖

challenge. For the 8th grade, Joey Borza and

Monica Hunter won; 7th grade winners were Josh

Musselman, Jack Shelly and Nate Repetz. At the

school bee on January 14, Jack Shelly became the

school champion and will move to the next level.

Good luck GeoJack!

MIRROR, MIRROR ON THE WALL By Angela Rossi

Mirrors reflect what you want them to

For its images do not show looks, but mindsets.

A mirror doesn‘t show, but perceives

It is not honest, but deceitful and full of trickery.

It only shows you the fairest

As those who already know it

For it acts as justification,

Not judgment.

WAR By Nick Rudolph

I saw the bombs

bursting beside me,

the medics running

saving,

the helpless soldiers I saw

dying in my eyes,

their friends yelling

hoping for something,

for us to win

to survive,

but when the battle is done

no one has won.

THE LIGHTHOUSE By Jack Shelly

Your red and white stone walls,

surrounded by the sea,

with a roof of misty fog,

planted on shell-covered sand.

Your steep spiral stairs,

which seagulls fly around,

lift me up unto your top

Then return me to the ground.

FOUR DIFFERENT WINDS By Colin Laubach

The winds of spring

are sweet and gold.

The pollen in air

with the sight of marigolds.

Then summer‘s hot,

drying wind,

heats everything up

as though someone has sinned.

Fall‘s wind brings leaves

red, orange, and yellow.

Falling from trees

giving great bellows.

Then winter‘s cold

sends bugs away,

but not for long

until spring‘s first day.

For many STS students the month of January is

important because our school holds auditions for the

spring musical. The musical this year is ―Honk‖ a

play based on the story of ―The Ugly Duckling‖ by

Hans Christian Andersen. It tells the adventures of an

odd looking duck named Ugly who honks instead of

quacks. There are many animal characters in the

play. The auditions will begin January 23rd for the

speaking and singing parts while other students will

participate in the production as waitstaff, stage crew,

or musicians. The play is under the direction of Mr.

Ryan Boyles. The musical will run for three nights

April 3rd at 6:30, and April 4th and 5th with dinner at

6:30 and show at 7:30. Plan to join us because the

STS Middle School play ―Honk‖ will be very

enjoyable.

TRINITY PERCUSSION BAND Several STS students are members of Trinity's

Indoor Percussion Band. They include Tori

Shillingsford - xylophone, Claire McCarthy -

keyboards, Daniel Delaney - battery, and Kaitlyn

Anderson - dancer. STS alumna Lillian Hale,

mallets, is also a member. Members meet every

week to practice and then participate in several

competitions. Indoor percussion is under the

direction of Mrs. BJ Meagher, STS music teacher,

and Mr. Johnne Tuzza. Good luck guys!

DIOCESAN

SPELLING BEE The Diocesan Spelling Bee for

grades 4-6, sponsored by

Houghton Mifflin, will be held

on February 11. Look for results

LOOK HERE TO HELP OTHERS Students in first grade will help needy people around

the world improve their lives with better vision by

collecting used eye glasses January 28 - February 22.

Eye glasses may be given to any first grade student

or placed in the collec-

tion box in the school

lobby. The eye glasses

will be donated to the

Lions Club for recy-

cling.

GIRL SCOUT NEWS St. Theresa Parish Girl Scout Troop 680 is gearing

up for an exciting spring. All Scouts from the New

Cumberland, Lemoyne and Wormleysburg troops

took part in a bowling party at Red Crown Bowling

Center in January. Girls collected luggage for foster

children at this event as well. An all-day trip to Bal-

timore is planned for April 5th and the annual Cam-

poree is being held at Camp El Wa Ho near Caledo-

nia State Park in June. The girls will be selling

cookies through March. The girls are also collecting

―special occasion‖ gifts for the Catholic Charities

Foster Care Program. For more information on Jun-

ior Girl Scouting please contact Ms. Faith Curran

at 774-8768 or [email protected].

SAINTS SHOUT! By Nikki Ciccarelli

Hey! It‘s that time of year again, Saints Shout! The

first edition for the 2007-8 was great. It included

articles about our slogan, band, track, soccer, the

Spirit Week pep rally, the new report cards, and po-

WELCOMING A NEW YEAR a new year stands on my doorstep

ready to enter my life‘s journey.

something in me welcomes this visitor;

the hope of bountiful blessings

the joy of a new beginning

the freshness of unclaimed surprises

something in me rebuffs this visitor:

the swiftness of the coming

the boldness of the entrance

the challenge of a year‘s good-bye

something in me fears this visitor:

the unnamed events of future days

the wisdom needed to walk love well

the demands of giving away and growing

a new year stands on my doorstep.

with fragile caution I move

to open the door for its entrance.

my heart leaps with surprise,

joy jumps in my eyes,

for there beside this brand-new year

stands my God with outstretched hand!

He smiles and gently asks of me:

can we walk this year together?

and I, so overwhelmed with goodness,

can barely whisper my reply:

welcome in!
