Fred Lebow complained to his doctor that helacked energy. His doctor advised him to takeup running in order to increase his stamina.He fell in love with it! He was 39 years oldwhen he entered his first race and did horribly.He beat only one other contestant…a 72-year-old man. But he loved it!

Fred decided what he really wanted to do andhe did it in his spare time. He joined the NewYork Road Runners Club and organized NewYork City's first marathon race. But what Fredtruly wanted to do, even more than run, was tobring people together. And that is what he did.He believe that anybody should be able to run- people of all ages, any background,professional or amateur, and of any country.Today, more than 28,000 people of allbackgrounds and nationalities compete in theNYC Marathon.

Fred died in 1994.But as one sports writer said, "Fate handed him ashort race. With his gall, with his love of life, FredLebow turned it into a marathon."

When I was little, my Mom would make them forme when I had to go to hospital and I wouldliterally chase her home so that I could open upthis little box filled with all kinds of interestinggoodies. We need help collecting odds andends to make the BUSY BOXES to hand out tothe little people in the oncology wards at thelocal government hospitals in Cape Town.

We are going to put together a wonderfulcollection of stuff to keep the hands busy andhelp to pass the time while in those beds waitingfor treatment and for healing. Scientists had warned the farmers not to plantthat season unless they had irrigation andAngus knew very well that he didn’t haveirrigation. Planting potatoes would be a massiverisk. He prayed and prayed and knew that theLord wanted him to plant potatoes.

He went back to his farm, hired two extra farmsand planted potatoes in the dust. If the crop hadfailed he would have lost everything that he had.Angus clearly expected a miracle.

Angus is from Scottish decent and is by naturea very fiery character. Before he came to knowJesus, he often clashed with his farm workers,especially Simeon Benghu, his foreman. Afterselling his farm in Zambia, at a ridiculouslyprice, he had very little money to buy a farm inSouth Africa.

They purchased a farm without a house andhad to live in a caravan for several months. Jillwas 6 months pregnant and they already hadthree other young children.

The change in Angus came when he gave hislife, his heart, his family and his farm to Jesus

during a church service at the GreytownMethodist Church. What is very striking in thestory is the contrast between the miracles and thehardships that seemed to happen.

When the Lord called Angus to start preaching and toshare the Gospel, Angus acted in obedience and soonhe started getting calls from all over South Africainviting him to preach to farmers. His faith grew withevery campaign and with every miracle that heexperienced.

Then, just as you read about the miracles and think thatnothing could go wrong in the Buchans’ lives, a tragicaccident on the farm shook their family. This was anincredibly tough time for everyone at Shalom, but Godis always faithful in bringing His peace in times of need.Even at the lowest point in his life, Angus remainedfaithful to the Lord.

A wonderful part of the story is the fact that todayAngus and Simeon Benghu are real brothers in Christ.After 25 years Simeon is still Angus’s foreman and asAngus says: “His children are mine and my childrenare his.”

Angus and Jill soondecided that their faithneeded to have feet, andwhen they discovered theneeds in their community,they opened their farm to 24Zulu orphans. Thesechildren had no parents orhomes so Angus and Jilldecided to raise them astheir own.

Today two of Angus’daughters, Robyn and Jilly,help to run the children’shome. His children are justas dedicated as he is, andhis two sons, Andrew and

a VVD Projects story ...THE CREST, DURBANVILLE– BY ROB & LOUISE

The story of how we eventually chose VVD-Projects projects is a relatively long one. The shortversion is that we did not make it easy for them. Inthe last three years we have seconded to Londontwice for 13 and 15 months respectively. Prior tomoving to London, we had purchased our house,but not had the finances, or the time to reallydevelop the back garden. We simply put lawn downso that the garden would not be a dust bowl. It wasbetween these two secondments that my wife sawone of the Vvd project bakkies and wrote downtheir contact details.

This started a two year discussion with PJ aroundwhat it was that we were hoping to do, and whenwe were hoping to do it. In the past two years PJmust have prepared somewhere between 5 and 10complete quotes for us. The scope of the projecthas changed multiple times, and the time frameshave been juggled around by our sojourns back toLondon.

In the end we wanted two things. 1) We wantedsomeone who would manage the project in itsentirety. Neither of us have the time or expertise toorganise and manage contractors. 2) We wantedsomeone who we felt we could trust. We had heardso many nightmare stories of builders andlandscapers that we wanted to do our best to findsomeone who had developed a reputation forhonesty and integrity. We contacted two otherorganisations to provide quotes for us. In both

cases, the quoteslooked like they hadbeen written in thecar on the way tosee us. In contrastVvd projects gaveus an eleven pagequote broken downline item by lineitem. I even know

how much I am paying for the builders outside portaloo.Something else that really impressed us was that theteam never seemed to tire from discussing options withus. We have never built a garden before. We have ideas,we have seen things we like, but we have no idea if theycan work together.

Wat is skuldvoorligting presies? In terme van dieNasionale Kredietwet, word mense die geleentheidgegun om n skuldvoorligter te gaan sien indien hullevoel dat hulle nie meer in staat is om al hullemaandelikse verpligtinge na te kom nie.

Skuldvoorligters is en moet geregistreer wees by dieNasionale Kredietreguleerder (NCR) en beskik oormagtiging om namens mense met finansieleorginasies en kredierverskaffers te onderhandel.Indien U n skuldvoorligter gaan spreek, moet daardieskuldvoorligter eers vastel of U skuldlas oorbelaai is.

Indien die skuldvoorligter tot die konklusie kom datdit wel so is, word U onverwyld onder skuldvoorligtinggeplaas en geniet U die beskerming van dieNasionale Kredietwet, dit beteken dat daar nieverdere regsaksie teen U geneem kan word nie, Uword die geleentheid gegun om U huis en U motor tebehou, indien U samewerking gee en hou by dienuwe reelings wat U skuldvoorligter namens U tref.Die periode van U terugbetaling word verleng en Umaandelikse paaiemente word verlaag, van diefinansiele instellings is selfs bereid om rentekoerse te

DSAEK (Descemet's Stripping AutomatedEndothelial Keratoplasty) is a new cornealtransplant technique where the unhealthy,diseased, posterior portion of a patient’s cornea isremoved and replaced with healthy donor tissueobtained from the eye bank. Unlike conventionalcorneal transplant surgery known as penetratingkeratoplasty (PKP), the DSAEK procedure utilisesa much smaller surgical incision and requiresfewer corneal sutures. This usually results in morerapid visual rehabilitation for the DSAEK patientand also better post-operative visual acuity. Thelatest technology used for cataract extraction ismicro-incision phaco-emulsification. It isperformed under topical anaesthetic, whichmeans that your eye is numbed with eye dropsonly; no injections or general anaesthesia isnecessary. The procedure involves a sub-2.2mmincision in the side of the cornea, through whichthe surgeon applies a tiny, high-frequencyultrasound instrument. High-energy sound wavesbreak up the centre of the lens into microscopicparticles, which are then gently suctioned outthrough the incision. The new OZil Torsional andintrepid phaco-emulsification ultrasound systemprovides better post-operative vision and quickerrecovery due to clearer corneas.

Multifocal Intra-ocular lenses are becoming moreand more popular as patients who undergocataract surgery are usually independent ofspectacles for distance and near vision if theyhave a multifocal IOL implanted. The opticalsurface of the new generation multifocal

intraocular lenses has a wavefront-guided design,which takes into account the aberrations of theeye. There are various multifocal lens implantsavailable on the market, including Technis,ReStor, Rezoom, AcriLisa and Array. Some ofthese are better for computer work (intermediatedistance), while others are better for reading (upclose). Accommodating IOL's are also available.Surgeons can customise each patient’s surgeryby establishing which IOL, or combination ofIOL’s, is best suited to the patient depending ontheir individual needs.
