ISSUE 16 Term 3, Week 9 Monday, 16 September 2019

ICAS UNSW Tests – This week, our final UNSW tests will be held for participating students. Due to the tests being conducted online, they must be completed on the allocated days: Tuesday, 17 – English, Wednesday, 18 – spelling bee and Thursday, 19 – mathematics. All tests will commence at 2:00 pm in the school’s computer lab. National School Chaplaincy Program – The National School Chaplaincy Program (NSCP) is a Commonwealth-funded initiative to support the emotional wellbeing of students and the broader school community through the provision of pastoral care services. I have canvased our staff and P&C and there is support for our school applying for this grant, which will fully fund a School Chaplain working in the school for two days per week from 2020 - 2022. I understand that the title ‘School Chaplain’ can be a deterrent for some, however, once I’ve explained the role and purpose, there are generally high levels of support. Chaplains are trained in pastoral care and address overall wellbeing needs, including anxiety, building resilience, developing social skills, bullying and cyber safety, and engagement and support of the parent community. They are often retired teachers, nurses or social workers, who are employed jointly by the school and an external provider. I will be running an information session in the school library at 4:00 pm on Monday, 23 September for anyone who would like to know more about the program. P&C Wishlist – A huge thank you to the P&C for all of their fundraising, and support of the school and its students. At last week’s meeting, a school wishlist was presented to the P&C by staff. The P&C have decided to support the school with additional reading resources, digital technologies equipment and djembe drums. These resources are relevant to our school plan and will be highly valued by the students, teachers and community! Super 8s Cricket – There will be a Year 3-6 cricket competition at Culcairn on the first Friday in Term 4 for interested students. A note will be sent home this week. Whole School Performance – Tickets are selling fast in the office and excitement is beginning to build around the school and community as our Whole School Performance ‘The Olympics Come to Holbrook’ approaches. Performances will be held on Wednesday, 25 September – matinée (1:00 pm) and evening (7:00 pm) and Thursday, 26 September – evening performance only (7:00 pm). Information about the performance is included in today’s newsletter. A note with more information for parents will be sent home this week. A reminder that you need to purchase tickets to attend, with that money going towards the cost of hiring equipment and purchasing items needed for the performance. Tickets need to be purchased from the office, prior to the night, as there is allocated seating. The Year 6 students will star in the performance; however, all students will have the opportunity to be on stage throughout. If you haven’t already, please send in your child’s costume before the end of this week. We look forward to seeing you there! 5/6 Resilience Day – The 5/6 Resilience Day for public and independent school children from Holbrook, Henty and Culcairn was held recently in Culcairn. The day was coordinated by the Local Health Advisory Committee (LHAC) and local schools and featured Steve Bowen as the main presenter. He talked about his Boomerang Theory (“What you throw out, is what you get back”) and led students through a process of discovering their core values. Activities about teamwork, bullying, making mistakes and stepping out of their comfort zones were also a part of the day. Thank you to Abby Paton and Margot Pitzen for cooking the barbecue! Mr Fisher Principal

“THE SPROUTS” GARDENING CLUB A group of students from across several year groups have been excited to get back into the garden, now that the weather is improving. They have been busy weeding and planting out the grasses, kindly donated by the Glass family. Please remind your child to bring gardening gloves, if they have them, for our garden activities on Tuesdays. Christel Pargeter Year 3 Teacher

PREMIER’S SPELLING BEE Congratulations to Aiden Walmsley, Sybil Triggs, Annie Triggs and Jackson Barba who competed in the regional finals of the NSW Premier's Spelling Bee at Corowa Public School on Wednesday, 11 September. These students competed against students from 17 other schools in the region. Aiden made it to the sixth round and the others made it through to the second round. Well done to all for their fantastic efforts. It is not easy to stand up and spell difficult words in front of an audience. We are very proud of you all. Chrissy Lavis PSB Coordinator

STATE ATHLETICS CARNIVAL On Friday, 30 August, 15 Holbrook Public School students attended the Riverina Athletics Carnival as part of the Southern Riverina Team. These students put in an amazing effort and achieved excellent results. All students should be extremely proud of their achievements! Six of our students will be continuing their athletic quest, by representing our school at the State Athletics Carnival in Term 4. KINDERGARTEN ORIENTATION - NUMERACY On Monday, 9 September, the preschool children joined Year 5 for an orientation visit to Holbrook Public School. The Year 5 students did a wonderful job in assisting the pre-schoolers in navigating their way around the school. The pre-schoolers were on the hunt for some treasure, and successfully used their maps and clues to find it. A big thank you to the Year 5 students for helping to set up the activities and for braving the cold wind! We look forward to seeing the pre-schoolers soon for our Whole School Performance on Wednesday, 25 September. As always, families are encouraged to book a tour of the school at the front office. HAVE YOUR SAY ON BEFORE AND AFTER SCHOOL CARE The NSW Government is committed to providing before and after school care to all students of public primary schools in New South Wales. As part of the reform, a parent web form has been established by Service NSW that will enable parents to tell the department about their specific care needs and to stay up to date with any new developments. The information provided by parents will help the Department of Education to understand your needs, give them insights into where there are gaps in service delivery and help to ensure the extra places are delivered where they are required. Have you say today at https://www.service.nsw.gov.au/basc.

CANTEEN VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR TERM 4 Do you have some free time in your calendar during Term 4? If so, we would really value your time to help with lunch orders on Monday and/or Friday mornings. Not only is the process simple: 1. Sign in and take the class baskets from the office to the canteen, 2. The students will put their lunch orders in their class baskets, 3. Sign out and take the baskets to the Holbrook Bakery, It only takes around 45 minutes out of your day and your child loves to see you there. Please email Georgie Millard on [email protected] to volunteer or if you have any questions.
