The first of May will see the start of our “Skills & Thrills” 4-H After School

Program which will run for 7 consecutive weeks on Thursdays and

cover a wide variety of skills. This is a

great opportunity for our Grade 4-6 students.

Today is Earth Day!

Con. Steven MacNeill Grade 6 boys had a special guest

speaker on Monday, April 14th. Our RCMP liason, Constable

Steven MacNeill of the Kings County Detachment, spoke to our

students on the seriousness of bullying and the long term effects

that it can have on a person.

Maritime Electric

On Thursday, April 17th Mrs. King-Comptons’s Grade 6 class received a visit from Wayne Vessey from Maritime Electric. He presented “The Shocking Truth” and spoke to the students about the importance of electrical safety.

certainly had a difficult time choosing those to move on to the Provincials. It

was a wonderful visual history lesson to walk through. Thank you also to so

many of the parents who came out to view the exhibits. Great job everyone!

Easter Seal Update A huge thank you to all parents and students for your support of this year’s Easter Seal Ambassador tour. We had two fundraising projects this year. We sold tickets on an Easter Bunny at $1 per ticket. As well, our students really got behind the challenge between the upper and lower floors to see who would bring in the most money. Through both of these endeavours, we we able to present a cheque for $950.55 to the Easter Seals Campaign. So even though the Upper Floor did win the challenge again this year, the big winner was ultimately the Easter Seals and the children of PEI. So thank you everyone!

Music Happenings… Cardigan School Choirs will be participating in the Music Festival on

Thursday, May 8th at Hillcrest United Church in Montague. This year

Cardigan has three choirs entered – a boy’s choir, a girl’s choir and a combined Grade 3-6 choir. Each of our choirs will be competing one after

the other on May 8th. Watch for a note to be sent home early next week with all the particulars.

Heritage Fair Update Congratulations to all those students in Grade 4-6 who took part in our Heritage

Fair on Wednesday. Although students in Grade 5-6 had the choice to participate in

our school fair, most opted in and their

finished projects were on display for judging and visits from the general public

on Wednesday. Participating in this fair gave our students the opportunity to work

on and strengthen a number of valuable

skills that they will carry forward in all their future academic endeavours. Our seven

judges had a very difficult time selecting 4 winning projects from Grade 5 and 6 to

move on to the Provincial Heritage Fair on May 15th. The 4 projects that are moving

on are:

Harley Fraser-Dewar “T.H. Fraser Cannery” Lilla Garnhum “St. John’s United Church” Kyra Norton “Annandale, Past & Present” Chelsey VanKeyMeulen “George Matheson” All Grade 4 students did a project but do

not move on to Provincial (only for Grades 5-6). Four of the Grade 4 projects received

Honorable Mention. They were: Evelyn Brothers – “Harold the Mechanic” Mia MacDonald – “Lobster Fishing” Francis Sanderson – “Saw Mills” Keir Sheppard – “Alan MacAdam”

National Volunteer Week National Volunteer Week was April 8-12. To all of our volunteers, Thank You! National Volunteer Week is a time to recognize and celebrate the incredible efforts of our volunteers. Please remember to thank them!

Literacy Tips May is Speech and

Hearing Month A Speech-Language Pathologist works

with your child’s school to help provide a language-rich environment for all

students and to support students with speech and language challenges. Here

are some ideas for building the speech and language skills of your child at

home:

=Enrich vocabulary with language-based games such as: “Scrabble”, Wheel of

Fortune”, Scattegories”, and “Outburst”. =Children learn speech and language

through imitation. Being aware of your

own speech production, including grammar, helps your child improve his or

her own skill. =Have fun conversations! Discuss

everything from daily events to what’s in

each room of the house. Conversational skills, such as continuation of the topic

and turn-taking are essential parts of speech and language.

=Play “I Spy” using colours, sizes, uses or positions. Take turns giving clues and

guessing the answer. This game helps

develop reasoning, describing, and listening skills.

=Talk to your child during mealtime, driving the car, bathing, dressing,

cleaning, shopping, and watching TV.

Ask the child to label or describe the objects in the environment.

=Ask the child questions about what they did in school or during a play date.

Sequencing language helps with vocabulary retention, reading readiness

and math skills.

=Keep a calendar, journal or scrap book with your child. Have the child be aware

of upcoming holidays, birthdays and school activities. This adds to the child’s

knowledge of his/her environment and

allows for good conversation.

They can offer support and help you find ways of getting along with others better. =Put yourself in other’s shoes…think about what it must feel like to be bullied online. Would you want to be treated that way? =If you think you might bully someone online, stop the message activity and walk away. =Resist peer pressure to participate in cyberbullying… do what’s right.

“Skills & Thrills – 4-H After School Program The “Skills & Thrills” 4-H After School Program is for students Grades 4-6 and will be held in the Music Room at Cardigan School beginning on Thursday, May 1st and continuing every Thursday for 7 weeks, and will run from 2:15 p.m. to 5:15 p.m. Cost per student for the program is $25.00. Some of the topics that may be covered will be cooking, agriculture/gardening, outdoor recreation, photography, scrapbooking, animal care and many more. This 4-H After School Program seeks to increase the quality and quantity of after school programs, and to offer high quality care, education and developmental experiences for youth. ‘Learn to do by doing!’

Badminton Update Congratulations to all athletes who participated in the Zone Badminton Meet in Souris. Behavior, sportsmanship and quality of play was excellent. The following students went on to compete at the Unit Meet at Montague High. Novice Boys Doubles: 1st Reid Peardon & Joel MacEachern 4th Logan MacNeil and Harley Fraser-Dewar 5th (alternate) Carson Johnston and Nolan Stewart. Novice Girls Doubles: 2nd Sarah MacEachern and Sophia MacEachern 3rd – Halle Stewart and Carley Matheson Novice Boys Singles: 1st Reid Peardon; 2nd Joel MacEachern; 5th (alternate) Logan MacNeil Novice Girls Singles: 2nd Halle Stewart; 5th Sarah MacEachern (alternate) Our students all competed well at the Unit Meet. There was no one from Cardigan to advance to the Provincials. A huge thank you to Mrs. Nabuurs for all her after hours and noon time practice work with students.

Staff from the Transportation Services will be holding a Meet and Greet Information Night in the Summerside Office located at 288 MacEwen Road, Summerside, P.E.I. on April 28th and Stratford Office located beside the Stratford Town Hall in Stratford, P.E.I. on April 29th. Both sessions will be held between 5:00 PM and 8:00 PM and refreshments will be served.

Interested in Wheelchair Sports? Do you have a child between the ages of 5—12 who is interested in trying wheelchair sports? ParaSport and Recreation PEI, with help from PC Children’s Charity, is launching an Introduction to Wheelchair Sports After School Program this April and May! It will take place in three locations – Summerside Intermediate School, Westwood Primary School and Morell Consolidated School - once a week for six weeks. Led by Wheelchair Basketball Canada’s National Junior Team members Jeremy and Joel Watts, this program will teach students the basic skills of wheelchair sport and sport in general! Begins Wednesday, April 23 at Morell Consolidated School. All sessions begin at 3:30 pm!
