Another big thinker around enabling children’s well-being is the celebrated Finnish educator,Pasi Sahlberg, who is currently Professor of Education Policy at the University of New SouthWales. Pasi is passionate about the importance of play. He is convinced that the evidence istotally convincing that children’s play is effective beyond anything else in encouraging creativityand initiative, and physical, cognitive and emotional strength in children. He is convinced thatplay is the best bridge for any child to cross to access educational growth and excellence. ‘Play is important because by definition, it is something every child can succeed in. It is a naturalthing they do unless we take it away, unless we ‘educate’ children out of play, which is what ishappening now in many places,’ says Sahlberg. Food for thought? We certainly think so, and choose as Arndell Anglican College Junior School to take the call toprofessional thought and research very seriously. We are therefore looking to pro-activelyexplore these aspects more fully. Interestingly, Pasi puts the success of the Finnish education system down to an ability to discernwell and act equitably, across all sectors, with professional conviction and strong professionalplanning providing motivation and energy. ‘Our skill,’ he says, ‘is to implement and understand what ideas really work.’ Our aspiration is to make that our skill too, so that all of our children might truly grow andflourish to fullness of life in a school community, founded upon faith and trust, that enableswell-being, adventure and that kind of play with the potential to turn moon shots to the starsinto actual inter planetary reality! Every blessing!

CHAPLAINCY CHAT

Proverbs 23:24The father of a righteous son will rejoice greatly, and one who fathers a wise son will delight in him. Fatherhood can be a challenge, I know. I love my children, however, regularly see my own poortraits passed onto the next generation. Children copy what we do, even emulate us, oftenhoping to become like us. It does look like it changes in the teenage years, although does itreally? The passage from Proverbs above makes it look simple. Be a good dad and your kids will begood. Often it can work this way, however, we all know times, even in our own lives, where itdoesn’t work out. There is wisdom here but sometimes it is hard to know if we are we doing itright. As a father I want to know how to do it better. I talk to others, I read, I listen to those with moreexperience. As a Christian I believe there is an example that is better than all other. God thefather loves the people he made so much, that he sent his only son to die for them. He makesthe ultimate sacrifice to bring them back into relationship with himself. So, when we look tohim and his example, we learn what a good father he is. I’d like to be loving like this, I know I don’t reach my own standards. At this point I again realiseI, and all dads, need God’s help, so here is a prayer:- Our heavenly father, may all the dads in our community do the best we can. Please help us to behumble and learn from our mistakes. Help us to look to you as the ultimate example of a loving, sacrificial father. May we be able to rejoice in our children living good lives. Amen. If you have any questions about the Christian faith or chaplaincy at the College, please contactthe Chaplaincy Team.

ROTARY ART COMPETITION

The annual Rotary Club Competition presentation night was held 3 August 2019. Three ofArndell's Visual Arts students were awarded prizes for their artworks. Brianna (Year 10) andHannah (Year 12) were awarded runner up and Isaac (Year 10) won 1st overall. Congratulations to these students for their outstanding achievements.

On the 9th of August, a group of Year 10 students braved the cold weather and representedthe College at the ‘Maths in Surveying’ excursion at Bicentennial Park. Throughout the day,we were able to apply the skills we learn in our maths classes to real life and explore thehistory of surveying. Notably, we used an instrument called a Total Station to calculate theheight of Treillage Tower, using trigonometry, and to measure distances as we competed ina ‘Mini Olympics’. As well as this, we were given the opportunity to try different equipmentthat surveyors use like a Real-Time Kinematic GPS, a sundial and a ground penetrating radar(unfortunately, we didn’t find any dinosaur remains). It was a very rewarding day out foreveryone as we used maths in a completely new context and were able to learn about thework surveyors do in our world.

ROBOCUP JUNIOR CHALLENGEMR STEVEN CATT

On Monday, 19 August, two Year 6 teams represented Arndell at the RoboCup JuniorChallenge.  RoboCup Junior is a project-oriented educational initiative that sponsors local, regional and international robotic events for young students.  The team builtprogrammable EV3 robots (engineering), navigated a course at school which they did quitewell (testing), recorded outcomes (documentation), and wrote the code to make therobots work (programming). The two teams prepared for the challenge throughout the year and the work that theyhad done prior to the event was excellent.  On the day the teams were valiant in theirefforts, working so hard to get their robots to navigate the challenges set them, unfortunately on the day things didn’t work the way we had planned.  Although this was the case, through the process the boys have learned a lot about team work, collaborating, problem solving and perseverance.  On the day they took the pressure in their stride andenjoyed the experience observing other schools and their robots.  There is such a lot ofopportunity for students to develop their skills in this area that will surely dominate theiroccupation options in the future.  Congratulations to the two teams who were fine representatives of Arndell: Oliver Isemonger                       Axel Levison Adam PisaniJack Woods Obadiah ClarkJack MezzomoGabriel PutrinoDaniel Davey

Marvellous ambassadors for Arndell, Obadiah Clark 6B, Ava McCabe 6G, Axel Levison 6G, GiannPerry 6G, Lara Bradwell 5G, Rhiannon Watts 5R, Joshua Bawcombe 5R and Aiden O’Connor 5Bworked incredibly hard all day, fully completing all set tasks in the times allocated. While it wasnot our day for a win, we can only be very grateful and proud of your efforts. Thank you and well done!
