Dinner Presentation: Stories, Group Norms, and Culture

Stories create culture by default or by design. When you share true stories of shared values you can embed cohesive team culture, positive habits and group norms that reinforce personal responsibility, collaboration, conflict resolution and meeting deadlines.

Learn to model authenticity with a personal story that illustrates “who you are” and “why you are here.” Consciously providing examples of expectations demonstrates and reinforces the values you seek. Choosing stories with intention ensures stories of mission and values outnumber the naturally high number of entertaining war stories and stress stories we tend to share.

Dinner Meeting Speaker:

Annette Simmons is a vibrant keynote speaker, consultant and author of four books: The Story Factor named as one of The 100 Best Business Books of All Time, Whoever Tells the Best Story Wins , A Safe Place for Dangerous Truth (AMACOM, 1998), and Territorial Games: Understanding and Ending Turf Wars at Work. "The people you want to influence don't want more information, they want faith. Faith in you, your ideas, your plans, your story. How can you tell your story in a way that is compelling? believable? long lasting? Discover how to tell a story that awakens people's faith in you." Annette started with a business degree from Louisiana State University in 1983, spent ten years in Australia in international business, attained a M.Ed. from NC State in 1994 and started Group Process Consulting in 1996. Annette is surprisingly honest, ferrets out hidden opportunities, joyfully takes risks and tells a good story.

Timely Tips… ‘LEAN’

Did you know an organization can provide Lean Yellow Belt training as a starting point for a company’s process improvement training program? The Lean Yellow Belt course provides a foundation in the tools for executing Lean Six Sigma techniques. No prior training is required to attend a Lean Yellow Belt course.

Here is PMI Houston October question. Test ‘LEAN’ your knowledge.

What is the difference between a Project Manager and a Lean Six Sigma (LSS) Green Belt (GB) during Thanksgiving? a.) The Project Manager (PM) is like your Mom organizing who is to bring what to the Thanksgiving dinner and did they get there on time.

b.) The LSS Green Belt brings the pumpkin pie and creates a pie chart to describe the size of the proportion they are to get based on their age and weight.

c.) After Thanksgiving dinner, the Project Manger takes a break, while the LSS Green Belt creates a value chain on how to efficiently clean the table in a timely manner.

d.) Shopping for Christmas after Thanksgiving, the Project Manager maps out what to buy at each store, the Green Belt researches each item to buy, compares the price and quality.

e.) All of the above

My Message Center Project Management Practitioner of the month:

Fabiana Manzo, PMP

I formally started my career in project management when I decided to enroll into the Masters of Science in Technology Project Management at the University of Houston. I did not know exactly what I was going to be exposed to, but I was pursuing two main goals. The first goal was to learn how to developing soft skills, because of my engineering background; and the second goal was to obtain tools and techniques that could help me as an employee, to communicate with management and colleagues. Good news, I found what I looking for... However, by the time I finished school, I found a new world to me within the project management profession. Where I’m at now: I started Consulting at Halliburton’s PMO in January 2012. This role has allowed me to apply the knowledge I learned at the University. In addition, I have had the opportunity to train my colleagues in the use of the Project Management tools we use in our group. During this training, I introduce the team to the Project Management tool here at Halliburton, at a very high level, and highlight the importance of knowledge sharing and team work. Introduction is followed by a guided creation of a project, which will go throughout the project life cycle using the tool. Getting Certified: Having fulfilled the experience needed to qualify for the PMP certification, I then completed my application and submitted it to PMI. The application was audited at the second check point established by PMI. When I received the notice by email, I was already enrolled in a training course to take the exam. This time was right before the transition to the PMBOK 5th edition, and I was preventing any delay because I studied, and was familiar, with the PMBOK 4th edition better. Moreover, I had to request two letters of my experience from Venezuela, and I knew it was going to take some time to get this done. I was very nervous. Never the less, I took the training, and about two months later, I took the examination with a positive result. I hope my journey can inspire you as I am glad to share with all of you that I am now a certified Project Management Professional (PMP®). I am very thankful for the support I have received from my family, friends, manager, colleagues, and PMI. Sincerely, Fabiana Manzo

Answers Let Our People Talk- Timely Tips ‘LEAN’ Answer

Question: What is the difference between a Project Manager and a Lean Six Sigma (LSS) Green Belt (GB) during Thanksgiving? Timely tips “LEAN" answer is ….. (E) The PM directs a project’s completion, whereas the GB uses analytical skills too on the project For the following reason: a). Using graphics the LSS GB can make sure no left over pie will happen at this Thanksgiving dinner c.) Creating efficient, time saving, methods for cleaning dishes, is part of the LSS GB’s eagerness to watch the next football game. d.)
