Welcome to the first issue of Caduceus for the year 2013. In this year, with ‘transition’ as our theme, we embrace diversity, vividness and innovative ideas. We hope that you would enjoy this issue and the new elements that we have poured in as you flip through the pages.

Celebrating the Valentine’s Day in the month of February, we have asked for submissions of love letters. Every letter, regardless of its length, is surely invaluable to us and is published in this issue. In the coming issues, we would continue to think of interesting topics and you are highly encouraged to express your opinions on them. A few sentences will do since they are your ideas which we, being the platform for exchanging views, cherish a lot. In this issue, aside from love letters, we have allocated a number of pages to creative writing and there are several imaginative love stories which echo the theme of this edition. Besides indulging in fantasy, have you ever pondered about the proper and practical ways of confessing affection to your beloved ones? There is an article giving you advice on it.

In addition to articles related to the Valentine’s Day, we include interviews with our prestigious alumnus, Professor Joseph J.Y. Sung, and a benevolent Chinese medicine practitioner, Dr. Yang Yan Kim Ning, who provides free services to the underprivileged. If you would like to relax and get refreshed a bit on a hectic day, you might want to read through the articles under ‘A Taste of Life’ where a film review, a brief introduction to Hong Kong’s rock and roll music and passages recommending marvelous places in Hong Kong can be found. Concerning news, we have articles about impoverished hawkers in Tin Shui Wai, the political environment in Hong Kong and gun control in the United States. There are also pieces about feelings of a freshman and one’s struggles in fulfilling expectations from society.

In the direction of pursuing plural and appealing topics of articles, we are heading for dynamic publications and looking forward to your involvement. If you have any suggestions or submissions, please feel free to contact us through e-mail.

Before embarking on reading our very first issue, we once again hope that you would find it enjoyable and be encompassed in the invigorative atmosphere that we yearn to create for you, our dear Reader.

5“Age does not protect you from love. But love, to some extent, protects you from age.” - Jeanne moreau

INTERVIEW

Page 6: Issue 1, Volume 44, Caduceus 2013

6 hkuCADUCEUS.net Feb 2013

7“Love is like a violin. The music may stop now and then, but the strings remain forever.” - June masters bacher

INTERVIEW

Page 9: Issue 1, Volume 44, Caduceus 2013

9“Love is a game that two can play and both win.” - eVa Gabor

Page 10: Issue 1, Volume 44, Caduceus 2013

Which country has approximately 5% of the world’s human population, but

also 40% of the world’s civilian-owned guns? The USA, obviously. The question is hardly a contender for the most difficult item at the pub quiz. Accom-panying a gun ownership rate of 89 firearms per 1000 citizens is a homicide rate of 10,000 per year, the highest of any developed nation in the world. The association between the availability of firearms and the commonness of murder is far from a spurious coincidence – Killias’s analysis of data from 14 countries showed that there existed a direct correlation between gun ownership and homicide rates.

Yet, for the victims of the December 2012 school shooting at Sandy Hook, as well as their families and friends, the problems of gun ownership and gun control, which have for so long been highly controversial in the US, were ones that could simply not be expressed in statistics. In the words of Msgr. Robert Weiss, “These 20 children lit up this community better than all these Christmas lights we have.” Shortly after the incident, widespread calls for gun law reforms erupted, both within and outside of the US. A petition delivered to the White House just 15 hours after the shooting was signed by over 100,000 individuals, with many more following in the subsequent weeks.

Luke Yiu (M16)

A FArewell to Arms: Gun ownership And control in the us

What political action, then, has actually been taken in response to the renewed wave of anti-gun sentiment? The answer, depressingly, is “not much”. While Governor Dannel Malloy of Connecticut has ordered a review of the state’s firearm and public security policies, no signif-icant moves to tighten gun control have been made at the national level. The one exception to this is Senator Diane Feinstein’s effort to renew the federal assault weapons ban, which expired in 2004 and was never continued.

It should be fairly evident that changes resulting from the current courses of action, if any, are unlikely to have much effect on homicide rates in the US. Revisions to laws made at the local level will ultimately be inconsequential to the bigger picture of violent crime across the entire nation. Banning assault weapons - the term indicating “semi-automatic firearms with

military characteristics”- will also do little to reduce gun murders, as police statistics have shown that the majority of homicides committed with firearms involve pistols, which are of small enough size and low enough calibre that they are not considered assault weapons.

A further note on the federal assault weapons ban, as it was formulated in 1994, is that it really was almost completely ineffective. Its problems were many: it applied only to guns manufactured after the enactment of the bill, allowing legal sales of older models; It did not ban possession of assault weapons by those who owned them already;

1: Parents leading their children away from Sandy Hook Elementary School following the shooting on December 14th, 2012.

2: The Bushmaster XM-15, one of the guns used at Sandy Hook and an example of a weapon previously banned by the federal bill against assault weapons.

15“There’s a difference between who we love, who we settle with and who we’re meant for.” - anonymous

And last but not least, it contained loopholes that allowed such guns to be sold at special events nonetheless. Studies conducted by the National Research Council concluded that the assault weapons ban had no clear impact on gun violence. In all likeliness, a renewal of the ban would end up being an exercise in futility with regard to reducing homicides, unless significant changes were made to the provisions of the bill.

If you want to do something, either do it properly or not at all. Gun supporters in the US favour the argument that it is the individual pulling the trigger that kills, not the gun per se - and this is a valid point. However, educational campaigns to change public values and attitudes towards firearm use, even if implemented, could take many decades to exert any noticeable effects. Thus, gun control by legislation remains the most immediate, most straightforward, and, in all probability, most efficacious method of bringing homicide rates down to a level at least comparable with the other developed nations. Minor local revisions and a ban on military firearms are, to be quite direct, simply insufficient to prevent not only the next mass shooting, but also the next average, day-to-day robbery and murder in the streets of Harlem.

Right now is a golden time for the govern-ment of the US to make the big changes necessary with respect to gun control and gun ownership. The reaction of the American public to the Sandy Hook shooting has been much greater than those to Virginia Tech in 2007 or to Aurora, earlier in 2012, partly because it is perceived as “one time too many” and partly because its victims were mostly children under the age of 8. Legal changes made while sentiments remain strong are likely to meet with less opposition, and more interest in imple-mentation. Rather than focusing on renewing outdated and flawed bills like the assault weapons ban, politicians favouring gun control should not hesitate to aim for more ambitious goals such as a ban on pistols or a national buyback programme to bring down ownership rates. .

3: Mass shootings occur in the USA with shocking frequency - in 2012 alone, there were no fewer than 16 incidents.

I still remember how we met. You lay there that August afternoon, a thin sheen of

sweat on your forehead, wheezing as the venti-lator pushed oxygen into your fluid-filled lungs. You opened your eyes weakly as the houseman inserted a syringe into your left thigh.

In a scene reminiscent of dreams, like a film playing before my eyes, there is an unex-plored beach. The sky is a dazzling mélange of orange, pink and gold. The wind coos softly as the ocean swirls around the rocks. Two figures then emerge, an old man and a young girl. They stand on the shore, silhouettes against the sun’s waning glow.

“I can’t get a pulse.” He explained that his artery had to be located by feeling the pulse before getting arterial blood for the ABG test. As he searched, the ECG monitor began to bleep. Bradycardia. Your heart rate was plummeting.

The man begins to walk. He moves haltingly, but his direction is clear and not once does he look back. The girl hesitates, unsure of whether to follow him, but finds herself walking beside him all the same.

52. 43. 36. The nurse called the physician on duty. The houseman prepared dopamine to try and revive your heart. I half-expected a full resuscitation, but the pink sheet proclaiming ‘Do Not Resuscitate’ on your patient file gave me my answer.

She wonders why she is here. She doesn’t even know his name. But she sees his chest heaving, his step failing, and he crumbles into her arms as she reaches out to half-support, half-carry him into the blazing aurora ahead.

The bleeps became faster, the lights flashed red, the number fell. I tried to feel your wrist for a pulse. I felt helpless because I knew it would never come, and I could never bring it back.

19“Love doesn’t make the world go round. Love is what makes the ride worthwhile.” - anonymous

The sky becomes a reel of moments moving in time. The man runs, a carefree boy, pretending to be the grey war planes that soar above him. He screams joyfully as he jumps from a cliff into the sea. He exchanges vows with his wife on their wedding day. He hears the first cry of his son. He picks up his little girl, kissing her cheek as her giggles resound into the summer air. The girl watches the man cry, laugh and love, living his memories before they are taken away.

The world had ground to a halt. I watched the screen change from bradycardia to asystole. Despite the ECG’s whine, you moved wildly, riddled with agony, losing touch with the world. I continued to grip your wrist. Then, although you were slipping away, you regained your final shred of lucidity. I felt you grip back.

A final memory plays. The girl sees herself, wide-eyed and eager to learn the secrets of medicine. She takes notes as the doctor explains how to take arterial blood, before there is a symphony of bleeps and shouts and chaos sets into motion like a toppling of dominoes. The girl takes his hand, and in the flurry of dying the old man feels a flood of solace only a young girl’s grip can bring.

Defying your failing heart, you took your last breath. Your lungs filled with oxygen, your hand still held mine. As you exhaled, the ECG showed apnea. Then you let go, heading to heaven, leaving your body and me behind.

They reach the edge. The man continues into the horizon, but the girl cannot move any further. “Let him come home,” God whispers. “Go back.” She turns back, the lights of heaven illumi-nating the way and God behind her, and whispers a prayer of thanks. This had

been a man’s last journey, and she has been chosen to walk with him.

Death visited three times that day. Silence reigned - the ward’s normal chatter disappeared, and the TV’s usual blare was barely audible. Your ventilator hissed out oxygen. Your ECG printed proof of asystole. The houseman came for your last examination. After you were certified dead your wife arrived, weeping as the medical team softly comforted her.

My faith in God renders me unafraid of death. But nothing can stop the pain or the grief that comes after someone dies. I barely knew you; sadness wrapped its arms around me nonetheless. I helped the nurse take the leads off your chest, fix your clothes, close your eyes. With his encour-agement, I broke my stunned silence to talk to you, thank you and pray for you. I said goodbye as your coffin was wheeled from the ward.

Two weeks later I began medical school. Sometimes I am swept away, blinded by the stress. But sometimes, when the lines of memory and dream overlap, I am saved by what keeps me human. I remember how our lives touched, and how someday I can touch others’ lives too. I return to that unexplored beach, with an old man walking to heaven and a girl walking with him, and I remember how she held his hand from this world to the next. .

Jaime Chung (M18)sAm And chArlie

To most people, they are simply a perfect match for each other, Sam

and Charlie. They happen to be a rare couple who are purely soul mates against the backdrop of a society replete with realistic concerns, and who manage to withstand the test of time and conventional norms, the two of them. Tough, heroic doctor and sweet, angelic nurse they are, Sam and Charlie. Aren’t they just meant to be? With a pair of strong, skillful hands, Sam, as an orthopedist, fixes their bones. With a pair of soft, delicate hands, Charlie, as an enrolled nurse, cures their souls. Together they sooth the sick, mourning patients in the hospital they have both been working in for five years.

“I know you’ve a tough spirit, but you can’t always be that robust. Sometimes, being susceptible is a good thing. You’ve got to feel something.” Charlie would sometimes say to Sam. And yes, Sam is tough, too tough indeed. Nothing could tear this young orthopedist apart. Not a tear is shed even upon the news of the sudden death of the young mother at room 42 after her delivery, whom Charlie has been taking care of since her admission.

“Not that I don’t feel a thing,” Sam would say to Charlie. “It’s just that I don’t feel like showing it. What’s more, I deal with bones. What’s there to be emotional about those hard, white fibers?”

“But still!”

“Yes, I know, maybe I’m wrong. That’s why we need you nurses. Someone to break down the walls standing in the way we fail to penetrate. Someone gentle and caring like you, love.”

And maybe Sam is right. Maybe that is why they are a perfect match. Sam, who is strong spiritually, and also physically maybe, provides a protective shell in which Charlie often feels

safe and easy, and which becomes the ground of security for their relationship. Charlie, on the other hand, fills in the tenderness that Sam lacks. They fit each other well enough.

One sunny afternoon, less hectic than those of other days, Sam manages to steal some little time off work and dashes into the pantry. The room is small but cozy and comfy, which allows the enjoyment of temporary solitude. Browsing around the room, Sam thinks about what a beautiful day it is, and the day-off tomorrow. A round of golf will be fun, if the good weather does not fade tomorrow. Yet Charlie is not really into it. Better do something else...

As usual, the rare occasion of private idleness does not last long enough. Two other physicians march in not long after Sam has hogged the place.

“Hey dudes,” Sam greets them with a big smile. “How’s your day bro?”

“Interesting,” George, two years Sam’s senior, replies. “No, I just hope I could say that. It’s boring. Good thing that at least I got some free time here.”

Carl, the other guy, nudges him and says, “Come on, man, don’t be so dull. There’s a match tonight. Go to my place this time, got tonnes of beer for us.”

“Arsenal and Chelsea?”

“Exactly.”

“Count me in,” Sam says. “I’ll try to persuade Charlie to come too. You got some fruit punch at your place? You know Charlie, never can stand alcohol.”

As the three continue their chit-chat, an old janitor comes in. She gives a start upon the sight of the idling doctors.

21“We come to love not by finding a perfect person but by learning to see an imperfect person perfectly.” - sam Keen

“Why, you boys are at it again. While the entire hospital is working like mad, you’re fiddling around here as if nothing concerns you,” she snaps. As she goes to the water dispenser and refills it, she speaks again, “By the way, Sam, I think I saw Charlie crying on the children’s ward, seventh floor. You know, the five-year-old with leukemia couldn’t make it.”

At her words Sam knows that Charlie is mired in a hard time again. It happens every time these saddening yet inevitable events occur. The sensitive nurse never knows how to withdraw from it. But Sam loves Charlie well, and bears the enduring patience every time to help Charlie find the way out of it.

Sam goes to the children’s ward on the seventh floor but couldn’t see Charlie. Other nurses walk by, and when they see Sam, they say to the panting, worrying doctor, “Charlie’s gone to the lavatory.” So Sam hurries along the corridor and into the lavatory. Charlie is there alone, sobbing, and gasps upon seeing Sam.

“What’re you doing here? You shouldn’t be here.” Charlie urges.

“But there’re only the two of us now, and I don’t want you to be alone.” Sam says reassur-ingly.

“Don’t tell me to withdraw. I know, I know, and I will, but not now.”

“Sweetheart, I’m not telling you to withdraw. We medical workers bear the obliga-tion to blend into the ups and downs of patients and their family, to become part of their life. I learned that well back in medical school, and have been trying my best to put this utopian conviction in practice since graduation. Yet after a few years of experience, I came to realize that dwelling on things beyond your control only drifts you further and further away from your path. Move on, and help their family in doing so, that’s the remedy...”

The lump in Charlie’s throat is so big that does not allow further speech. Yet of course Sam understands, Charlie can see that, and has a point, too, which makes a great consolation to the devastated nurse. They hug each other tightly in affinity. Just then, the door knob turns, and in comes George, who sighs and shakes his head as he sees the two of them.

“Really, my dear Sam,” he says. “I’ve never seen a girl like you, really. I’ve always known that you’ve got lots of personality ever since the day I met you. But this is a men’s room! Why, you think that with your short, boyish hair, you can fool people into believing that you belong here? No way! And Charlie, men don’t cry. So, for goodness’ sake, stop the fuss please. Be a real man for once, I beg you.” .

25“The biggest obstacle to love is the secret fear of not being worthy of being loved.” - Juan Pablo VIldes r.

F rench cinema has come up with another great work from director Francois Ozon,

who was critically acclaimed for his previous works including “8 Women” and “Swimming Pool”. Adapted from Juan Mayorga’s drama “The Boy in the Last Row”, “In the House” transits between creativity and imagination and builds up moral suspension about an affair between a talented student and his friend’s mother.

The story begins in a high school when high school literature teacher Germain (Fabrice Luchini) requires his students to write a journal about their previous weekend. Among the generally poor works, he is impressed by a talented, 16-year-old student Claude’s (Ernst Umhauer) work in which he tells of going to his friend Rapha’s house to teach him maths, yet at the same time paying partic-ular attention to Rapha’s mother Esther (Emmanuelle Seigner), and eventually starting an affair with her, both fictitiously and in reality. The rest of the story tells the moral chaos involving Germain, Claude and Rapha’s family.

Claude’s behavior has offended Rapha’s family, Germain and his wife. However, his acts are justified in the film’s context in several ways. To begin with, Germain is devoted to literature but his previous work is too mediocre to deserve positive reviews, and he is repeatedly frustrated by his students who show little interest in liter-ature. When Claude’s works which always end with “a suivre (to be continued)” impress him, he is compelled to assist him in writing to help him make a conclusive and plausible story. However things start to go wrong when Claude uses present tense instead of past tense “as a way to stay in the house”, and eventually Germain has no way but to give up his teaching career. It is a tragedy when creativity conflicts with morality which is yet to be ended.

Claude’s background also contributes to his behavior. Given that his mother is dead and his father is disabled, he has always been aching for a perfect family life that other children are

enjoying. Instead of complaining through extreme acts like arson or committing suicide, he decides to use his talented skills in literature to compose a story about his friend Rapha’s family life by getting chances to enter his house. He portrays his family life in detail, including his father who dislikes his annoying boss and is obsessed with Chinese culture, his mother Esther’s appearance and her plans of reconstructing the house, and Rapha and his

father playing basketball together, and even imagines the spouses having sex in their room. Later on, he attempts to get close to Esther both in his story and in reality, and describes Rapha committing suicide after he spots them having an affair. Rapha has not done so in reality, but he does get away from Claude who goes crazy with his family.

Apart from addressing the moral chaos involved, Francois Ozon has handled scenes in Claude’s story well by incorporating Germain in it, making all of them

involved in the fictitious work. There is one scene in which, while Claude is kissing Esther in her house, Germain comes out from the kitchen and talks to Claude. Such technique has also been widely used by other filmmakers including Woody Allen, and has added stylistic flair to storytelling.

Francois Ozon has bravely placed Ernst Umhauer, who has little previous experience as an actor, as Claude. His performance is strongly guided by Fabrice Luchini just like the way Germain guides Claude, who plays Germain, as both share most of the time in the film. Emmanuelle Seigner has bolstered the film through playing the role of Rapha’s mother, who is charming and is attracted to Claude. The actors all contribute to the film’s success apart from the smart script and storytelling.

There is one phrase that Germain mentions, “It is better for a teenager to express himself using words instead of arson.” This has resonated with the ending where Germain and Claude sit together in front of a mansion “observing” what the residents are doing as their souls are connected through literature. It is perhaps a rather delightful ending towards this morally complex story. .

早日出pool(屆時請出pool飯以饗筆者)。.

A TASTE OF LIFE

“When Heaven Burns” finally won, vigorous opposition from

stalwarts of traditional TVB’s drama notwith-standing, the Best Drama Award in 2012. This was perhaps one of the rare occasions where the award given by TVB had most of us satisfied. Yet, the result is not surprising to many as this is the drama, after all, an artwork recognized as a masterpiece with inspiring ideas presented and an incredible sense of political sarcasm many directors try hard to avoid in their products. Plots aside, the music played in the drama also gains compliment from the public. As the drama alluded to rock music, the use of songs from Beyond in numerous scenes is, many will think, a wise choice.

BeyondThe emergence of Beyond was in 1980s,

which is regarded as the Golden Age of Cantopop nowadays. This band is often hailed as the most influential and legendary band ever in Hong Kong and the group’s founder, Wong Ka-kui, worshipped as the trailblazer in the develop-ment of local rock and roll.

The appearance of Beyond, however, was not greeted with enthusiasm by the public at the beginning. At that time, rock and roll was not considered the mainstream music genre, even Wong’s family did not show support to this. “I didn’t appreciate his music at first, perceiving this non-prevalence as noise,” Wong’s sister commented in an interview[1]. Regardless of this, Beyond insisted on their will. Beyond’s persistence in music, gradually, attracted many teenagers as well as older generations and as time went on, became the most-talked band in Hong Kong.

Gaining the crown of supremacy, Beyond extended its range and reach to other places like Taiwan and Japan. Unfortunately, Wong

died young. He passed away when he was 31 after falling down from the stage during a show in Japan. His sudden demise shocked the whole community, causing a collective gasp among his admirers.

Belief and Songs Beyond achieved its success by making

itself a socially aware rock band. Through a lot of songs produced, Beyond has touched on every-thing from political issues to some controversies like Chinese social contradictions. “We’re not doing this with intention; perhaps I’m more sensitive to social issues... I pay more attention to news pertaining to international affairs like wars and politics,” said Wong[1]. Like one of the famous songs, “Glorious Days” (光輝歲月), depicts Nelson Mandela, a South African leader: “Today there’s only a battered body left to welcome the days of glory... holding on tight to freedom.” For this, Beyond increased the awareness of social and political issues among the community, especially among politically apathetic youngsters.

Beyond produced songs, not because they just wanted to produce something but because they had something to say. “If you want me to create a song that speaks nothing, it will be a hard job for me,” said Wong. In the golden era of music, Beyond chose to make music speaking for them, not for money or fame.

“Peace, liberty and love” is the watchword of Beyond on which many ideas of their songs are

Edwin Chu (M17)beyond, beyond time

based. “Amani”, a song composed after their visit to Africa in 1991, is a well-known song quintes-sential of this. One can easily recall the chorus of the song – “Amani, Nakupenda, Nakupenda Wewe”, meaning “Peace, Love, We love you” in Swahili. In many occasions where Beyond performed, everyone would raise their hand with the sign[2] (see the figure) common in many other

rock band concerts. In convention, this is under-stood as a symbol of rock and roll. In fact, this sign represents “I love you” in sign language.

Beyond used it with one more meaning–peace. Moreover, Beyond’s yearning for liberty is insid-iously imbued in their songs like “Boundless Oceans Vast Skies” (海闊天空)–a song telling of Beyond’s resolution to pursue their dream and to do anything freely irrespective of all odds and opposition.

The extraordinary longevity of Beyond’s songs in Hong Kong is inevitable. Beyond sang to everyone’s heart, setting off a sustained resonance. Songs like “No More Hesitation” (不再猶豫) and “Regretless This Lifetime” (無悔這一

生), with encouraging lyrics rekindling the lights for people feeling hopeless and helpless, still sound vivid to a lot of Hong Kong people. Today, the existence of Beyond is still significant. For instance, in the outcry over the implementation of the ill-conceived National Education last year, we could hear the crowd singing “Boundless Oceans Vast Skies”. It was also adapted for the fund-raising of Sichuan Earthquake in 2008. From these, we can see that this band has left it legacy with perceptible influence.

This year is the 30th Anniversary of Beyond. May its fairy tale live forever. .

LOVE LETTERSTo The Lady With A Heart Of Gold.

Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day,

Or not, as that is an overused cliché.

The gentle breeze blows through your hair

Like smoke trails from an extinguished candle in the wind.

Though I, that am not shaped for sportive tricks,

Nor made to court an amorous looking-glass;

Am determined to fight fate to the end of time,

To struggle, to survive, and to thrive.

Every time I see thee, my suprarenal gland empties,

Causing a rise in myocardium contractility.

Strange emotions, like waves, pulse through my arteries.

My eyes glisten with an unshed tear,

In the limbic system, Joy and Courage, opposite of Fear.

Nightly dreams of thee so vivid and clear,

Beganst in earnest since the previous year.

In the sunlight that floods the world with splendor,

Thou art so humble, so beautiful, so tender,

So soft, so calm, yet eloquent,

Inside thee a heart whose love is innocent.

As magnets attract steel, my fond eyes trace

In all fair things to one beloved face.

Perhaps there is a Paradise on Earth,

More valuable than all gold worth.

Now there is one thing I must confess,

I do not wish to cause more distress,

Yet hopeless, tongue tied, and slightly absurd,

I am not good with poems or words;

Thus I shall confess directly:

Thank you for rescuing me

From the darkest depths of uselessness and depression,

When I was tired and weary of living,

Ready to bid farewell to the cruel world.

Despite being surrounded by shadows, misery and despair,

An Angel of Light reached down, one of few to care.

How can I ever fully thank thee

For all thou hadst done for me.

From thoust constant happiness I learnt the truth,

the meaning of life:

To experience the world, to live, to laugh, to love with rife;

That happiness is a path, not destination -

From the classical dogma, what liberation.

Ye doth gave me a reason to live,

Hence my heart to thee I give.

You aren’t like anyone I have ever met,

One so rare I dare not forget.

Getting to know you has been worth my while,

And it’s not just because of your smile.

I’m trying to think of the best way to share,

Hoping that you’ll reciprocate the feelings and care.

If only letting go were a choice,

Then I would definitely rejoice.

But I know I should stay strong

Despite others who think it’s wrong.

My feelings for you don’t fade or go away,

On the contrary, they grow stronger every day.

I have no clue

What is it that you do

That makes me love you so

That I cannot let go.

At first I thought it was fake,

Now I know it isn’t a mistake.

The burning question of do you care?

Or asking will you always be there?

I simply cannot just forget,

I hope this is something I shan’t regret.

In your hands my heart I place,

To be held close against your lace.

When I met you on that fateful day,

The grey rain-curtains were swept away,

And all turned to silver glass,

Then white shores, mountains and ryegrass,

A far green country under a swift sunrise,

More extraordinary than I could fantasise.

The world, once monochrome and grey,

Now sprang to life in a colourful array.

You caught me off guard and took me by surprise

With that smile, when I looked into your brown eyes

And caught a brief glimpse of your soul:

Composed of humour, intelligence – all I extol.

You asked for some plain correction tape.

My mind collapsed and could not take shape.

After an eternity I awkwardly answered “no”

And you hastily retreated, holding your gateau.

Though a poor stalker that you make,

Nor a good cheese-cake can you bake.

I still look at you with full of admiration,

Musculus dilator pupillae in action.

We all have our flaws (especially mine),

Wrapped under some gauze.

I pray for you to give me a chance:

To demonstrate my skill with a lance,

To love you dearly,

And hold you closely,

So of the future, we may dream and scheme

While eating Tofu flavoured ice cream.

Occasionally you may be overwhelmed and confused,

But I promise that you will never be abused.

To treasure each day as if it were our last,

So that looking back we won’t regret our past.

Though couples may sometimes disagree,

It is inevitable in life, I foresee.

No decisions will be made in haste or anger:

I will not risk placing your fragile cardia in danger.

How I yearn for the day I cannot fall asleep,

As real life is better than what I dreamt to reap.

Life is short, opportunity fleeting,

Once in a lifetime, never repeating.

Thus I say: Memento mori,

Sic transit gloria mundi.

Vita brevis breviter in brevi finietur,

Mors venit velociter quae neminem veretur,

Omnia mors perimit et nulli miseretur.

Reliquo tempore, amem te.

Signed – A friend.

We are all playing the game, in

the protecting thin layer of clay. Once you

have spotted the one who is, seemingly

ironically yet the most reasonably, strange,

the masks and the masked prides are, after

firstly approaching and prying, being

patient to tolerate and finally being able to

accept the oddity, put down. You no longer

indulge in the illusory party, for the reality

is now much better than dreams. As you

dance freely like there is no one watching,

you realize this vertical expression of a

just a game for two. It is an art, probably the

most intriguing one.

Glenn Gould如珠落玉盤的勾出的巴哈規律;

Jascha Heifetz魔術般喚醒了柏格尼尼;
