Personal Safety Tips for Home and Neighborhood- Don’t allow strangers into your home,
eveniftheyarehurtorsaytheyneedhelp.Keepthedoorlockedandcallthepoliceforthem.
- Don’tadvertisethatyoulivealone.- Don’t be afraid to call law enforcement
to investigate suspicious circumstances,unusual people, or strange noises. It’sbettertobesafethansorry.
- Keepoutdoorlightsonatnight.- Ifyouarrivehomeandyourdoorisopen
orthingsappeartobeoutofplace,don’tgoin.Leaveandcall911.
- Be a visiblynosyneighbor. Let anyonewalkingtheneighborhoodorsittinginaparkedcarseeyouwatchingthem.
- Make anoteof car licenseplates and ifanyone behaves suspiciously or stays intheircarforanunusuallylengthyperiod,callthepolice.
- Tellcloseneighborsthatyoutrustifyouplantobeawayorexpectanydeliveries.
- Ifyouaregoingaway,cancelnewspapers
and put a hold on your mail deliveriesor have a neighbor collect any mail orpackagesfromthedoorstep.
- Having a dog is a HUGE deterrent.Ironicallyburglars are farmore likely toavoid a house with a small dog than abigone–smalldogstendtobenervousandlesseasytotrickintocalmingdown.They’relesstrustfulandbarklouderandlonger.
- Takeawalkaroundyourhometofigureoutwheretheweakestlinkinyoursecuritymightbe–likeleavingawindowopeninasecludedspot.
- Bewaryofwhoyouallowintoyourhomeandhowmuchinformationyougiveaboutyourbelongingsandschedule(IfanHOAboard member comes by they will haveidentification and you can call AMS tofindoutifthereisascheduledcommunityoutreachgoingon).

The SAN ANTONIO POLICE DEPARTMENT sponsors aunique,excitingprogram,CELLULARONPATROL,thatgivesresidentsanopportunitytoworkcloselywiththepolicetomaketheirneighborhoodssaferplacestolive.
BACKgrouND• Members of neighborhood groups receive training at SAPD
substations.• Graduates patrol their own neighborhoods, using donated
SBMScellularphonespre-programmedwithadditionalfree-dialemergencynumbers.
• Funds to support theprogram (ID cards, logo shirts, etc.) aredonatedbylocalbusinesses.
THe CoP TrAININg ProgrAm Thepurposeof theCOPProgram is toprepareneighborhood
residentstobethe“eyesandears”ofthepoliceandtopromoteclosercooperationbetweenresidentsandthecityagenciesthatexisttoservethem.Thetrainingprogram,presentedat theSAPDsubstations,consistsof8hoursofclassroomtrainingandtheopportunityforupto8hoursofride-alongwithadistrictpatrolofficer.
During the classroom sessions volunteers are trained torecognize suspicious activities and other factors that lead to
crimeintheirneighborhoods.Policeofficersandotherspecialistspresent information on how to recognize various crimes,including burglaries, thefts, robberies, gang activities, narcoticsandviceactivities,andothercrimes thatmaybepresent in theneighborhoods theCOPgraduateswill patrol.COPvolunteersarealsogiven informationoncodeviolationsandhowtoworkwithCodeCompliancetocleanuptheirneighborhoods,aswellashowtoaccessagencyassistanceforelderlyanddisabledresidentsoftheirneighborhoodsorforvictimsofcrime.
The ride-along experience provides COP volunteers with theopportunitytofamiliarizethemselveswithSAPDpatrolproceduresandtoestablishpointsofcontactwithboththesubstationandwiththeofficerswhopatroltheirneighborhoods.MostCOPvolunteershavefoundtheride-alongtobeoneofthemosteducationalandvaluablepartsoftheCOPtraining.UponcompletionofthetrainingCOPgraduatesarepresentedwithagraduationcertificate,aphotoIDcardandaCOPT-shirtorhat.
A class will be held at the Prue Road Substation on November 13th and 20th from 8 a.m.-11:30 a.m. It is a two part class. Forms are available for download at http://www.sanantonio.gov/sapd/prue.asp . Email us at [email protected] for form pickup.
