Principal’s Message

It has been a great start to Term 3 at East Hills Boys High School. Staff have been engaging in rigorous professional learning

activities based around student wellbeing with the Berry Street Education Model. As well as engaging professional learning on

the ALARM system of teaching and learning. I am proud to see our staff striving to ensure they give our boys the best

opportunities to succeed at school and beyond. Special mention to our three Deputies Ms Savins, Ms Hazelton and Mr Kontellis,

as well as our Head Teacher Welfare Mr Stefanis and our Head Teacher Teaching and Learning Mr Watson for leading the staff

through their training in each of these activities. It really is heart-warming to see a united staff working collegially.

Our boys too have been extremely busy, with many representing our school and our zone at Regional athletics. Congratulations

go to Chris Alaelua, Karamo Sesay, Malek El-Masri, Jackson Topine and Tyrell Assante, who now will get the opportunity to

represent our school at State titles. Well done boys. A huge thanks to Mr Carson and Mr Hackshall who have mentored many of

the boys in the lead up to the Regional Athletics carnival.

Ms Fisher and Mrs Suteski have been really busy with the year 10 cohort and had the majority of boys out to work experience

last week. All reports that have come back to the school indicate that the boys did incredibly well in their work experience.

East Hills Boys has a long tradition of sporting success with our students and 2019 has seen two of our current Year 12 students

achieve enormous success already this year. Jackson Topine who was Jersey Flegg player of the year and captain of the NSW

under 18 State of Origin team has been selected to play for the Australian School Boys against the New Zealand School Boys. A

huge achievement for Jackson. Tanveer Sangha has also scaled the heights of his sport. Tanveer has been chosen in the

Australian Under 19’s Cricket World Cup train on squad after an excellent effort in the trials for the Under19’s Australian

Championships in Queensland in the holidays. Tanveer looks likely to represent Australia later this year at the Under 19’s World

Cup, a great achievement for a young man of 17. We are very proud of both boys achievements and sincerely wish them well in

their respective sporting pursuits.

It is very pleasing to announce that our Outdoor Gym has been established and is now in use. We have spent considerable

funds this year updating our big ticket projects to create a school that supports the fitness of our students. The Outdoor gym

has been established and the indoor gym has had a refurbishment, and next week our Futsal court will also be refurbished,

which will provide our staff a wonderful opportunity to give the Year 12 boys a beating in the annual Year 12 versus teachers

Futsal game at the end of term.

I would like to take this opportunity to wish our Year 12 boys all the best in their final few weeks of school. There are some

trying times ahead for the boys as they drive hard towards the finish line and our dedicated staff will be supporting our boys

through the next couple of months leading up to their HSC exams. As a parent or carer feel free to discus with your son their

needs leading up to the HSC and help them any way you can.

I am a proud Principal of a great school in a wonderful community and I look forward to making our school a place where

everyone works together for the greater good of our boys.

TIMED PARKING CHANGES

Canterbury Bankstown Council have advised us they have recently

updated timed and no stopping zones around our school. Affected areas

are Singleton Avenue, Tower Street & Stevens Street. Please ensure to

familiarise yourself with the changes to avoid traffic infringements.


VISUAL ARTS - LETS CREATE!!!

Year 7 – Have worked through the journey identifying colours as symbols of emotions. They have all engaged

and created some fantastic “Emotional Portraits” Check them out…

Year 8 – The boys are beginning their new topics “The Party” and “Revved Up”. They will be completing

observational drawings of cars and food which is sure to arouse their imaginations.

Year 9 – So after an intense day of Airbrush techniques and Spray painting, year 9 have finally finished their

cool individual skateboards, and will now be looking at Environments as

the next unit of work. Check out the exciting images of the day …

Year 10 – the boys have started to delve into the world of STREET ART!

Learning how to stencil and spray paint to create works that challenge the

perceptions of the artworld.


Year 11 – With their Masterpieces finished, the year 11 students are now diving into the History of Art. Below

are some of the final works which were created as well as a sneak peek of them “Learning”.

Year 12 – Not long now for the Major Works due in Week 7! Stay tuned for the Night of Excellence in Week 7,

which will display the fine work created by the boys, not only in CAPA but TAS also.


PHOTOGRAPHY AND DIGITAL MEDIA!

The year 9 photography class has started learning different camera techniques this semester. They have started

capturing shots around the playground, learning how to capture effective, engaging photos.

ENTERTAINMENT

12 Entertainment gearing up for their final events!

Students in the year 12 Entertainment class are working hard with planning for their final major events. These

events are part of their final assessment to attain a Certificate III in Live Production, Theatre and Events.

Students are planning on putting on a music industry workshop for elective students, a creative arts exhibition

night and a disco for a local primary school. We wish them all the best and encourage students and parents to

keep an eye out for some of the exciting events coming up this term!

Music – ROCK N ROLL…

Instrument Tuition

East Hills Boys High School offers students the opportunity to learn an instrument as part of their involvement in extra-

curricular activities. Due to the overwhelming student interest in performance and their desire in developing skills on

various instruments, small group classes are available for tuition in the following instruments: voice, piano, guitar, bass

guitar and drums. Lessons commence Week 3 and If you are interested please see Mr Prentice in the CAPA staff room for

a tuition note, but be quick spaces are limited!

Junior/Senior Band

Rehearsals for future performances are taking place Tuesday mornings period zero and Friday lunch times. Come and have a go if you want to try out for the band! If you are interested, see Mr Prentice in the CAPA staff room for more details.

Original Song Contest

Calling all songwriters and poets alike. This term we are entering a small group of students into an original songwriters contest. If you have an original song you would like to enter, come and see Mr Prentice for more information. Students selected to enter the competition will have their song professionally recorded at the brand new East Hills Boys Music Studio. Participants then have the opportunity to perform their song at Music in the Park with all participants receiving a $25 voucher and free tickets to a Bulldogs game!


2019 EAST HILLS BOYS ATHLETICS CARNIVAL

The annual EHBHS Athletics Carnival was held on Wednesday 12th June 2019 at The Crest Athletics Track. We were once

again blessed with excellent weather for our carnival, which made for an eventful and successful day of competition.

Congratulations to all students who competed in events. Participation

levels were once again very high this year, with many events having

over 40 students sign up to compete! All students competed with

great house spirit and outstanding sportsmanship. As a result, there

were some exceptional performances by a number of students

throughout the carnival.

A big thank you once again to Mr Navan and his team of

Entertainment students who were once again involved in the running

of the school radio station on the day. I would also like to thank the

numerous junior and senior students that helped on the day as

officials during the carnival. In particular, I would like to give a special mention to my Year 11 Sport Coaching class, who

arrived early to the carnival to assist with the setting up of equipment. Thanks so much for your continued hard work and

commitment to sport at our school.

Congratulations to the students in Amun Ra House for winning the house shield for this year’s Athletics Carnival.

BANKSTOWN ZONE ATHLETICS CARNIVAL

Sixty Five students represented our school at the Bankstown Zone Athletics Carnival on Wednesday 3rd and

Thursday 4th July at the Crest Athletics Track. The boys represented the school with pride, and the behaviour and

professionalism of the East Hills Boys team was once again a

highlight of the carnival.

East Hills Boys had numerous top 3 placings, meaning that we

have 30 students who have progressed through to the SSW

Regional Athletics Carnival. The carnival will be held on Tuesday

6th and Wednesday 7th August 2019 at the Campbelltown

During the school holidays, Jackson Topine of Year 12 has been up in Queensland representing

NSWCHS at the Australian Schoolboys Rugby League Championships. Although Jackson's

CHS team did not feature in the finals of the competition, Jackson's outstanding efforts

throughout the tournament were rewarded with selection in the Australian Schoolboys Rugby

League Team. Jackson will represent Australia in a match against the New Zealand on

September 29. Jackson was presented his Australian jersey by the Australian Kangaroo's coach

Mal Meninga.

The East Hills Boys High School community offer heartfelt congratulations to Jackson on a

thoroughly deserved accolade.


Tanveer Sangha was once again selected to represent the Australian Under 19 Cricket team in

the holidays, who played against New Zealand in a 5-match 50 over series up in Brisbane.

Unfortunately, poor weather curtailed 2 of the matches, but Tanveer took 6 wickets in the two

matches that he played in, contributing heavily to Australia winning the series.

As a result, Tanveer has put himself in a strong position to be selected for the Australian Under

19 World Cup Team, which will be selected toward the end of this year (the U/19 World Cup will

be held in South Africa in January/February next year).

We wish Tanveer all the best for a big summer of cricket ahead!


Open Touch Football

On Friday 14th June 2019 12 students from East Hills Boys High School competed in the Boys Open Touch

Football Knockout competition. This day was the central venue day for the Sydney South West region. The teams’

results are as follows:

Game 1 vs Strathfield South High School 5 – 1 Win

Game 2 vs Sarah Redfern High School 5 – 0 Win

Game 3 vs Liverpool Boys High School 3 – 2 Win.

East Hills Boys High School then went on to play in the finals and achieved the following results:

Quarter final vs Camden High School 5 – 4 Win

Semi Final vs Ashcroft High School 4 – 3 Win.

We were undefeated and finished top 2 in Sydney South West. The boys now progress to play against Lampton

High School in the Hunter as part of the top 20 teams in NSW.

Youssef Elomar – voted players player from his team mates.

On Friday 5th July 2019 East Hills Boys High School competed in the NSW Top 20 play off for the Boys Open

Touch Football Knockout competition. The boys took their time to wake up and warm up after the 3 hour drive to

play on a cold, wet and windy day in Newcastle against Lampton High School.

Thank you to Mr Hackshall who assisted in driving the boys to the game. In a very strong competition every

student represented their school and region with pride.

The boys were down 7 – 2 at half time and after a great team talk came out firing in the second half to only lose

9 – 2.

CAREERS NEWS AUGUST 2019

WORK EXPERIENCE 2019 Congratulations Year 10 on a successful work experience week. Our students participated in the Work experience Program in Week 3 of this term and all feedback from our host employers was exceptionally positive. Our students were confident, competent, and diligent and this greatly impressed our employers. It is also wonderful when students return to school with job offers. We thank all our families for their support during this time. We know that there is a variation to the normal routine but we believe that it is beneficial for all our students to gain an insight into the world of work. We also thank the families, friends and employers that hosted all our students at this time.

YEAR 12 – WHAT SHOULD OUR BOYS BE DOING NOW? STUDY, STUDY, STUDY – Make the most of your educational opportunity and strive to get a HSC that you will be proud of. Have a study routine in place and use your time at school with your teachers to maximise your ability to answer HSC style questions. UAC – Is your son/ward contemplating university? Have they applied to UAC? Early bird applications to the University Admissions Centre close on Monday 30th September 2019. Any application after this date will incur a greater cost. One your son/ward has applied, they can change their preferences at any time. They should also take advantage of the other schemes that are available to them such as EAS or SRS and they should attach documents to their UAC application. EARLY ENTRY – Some universities do have early entry schemes. Please use the information on the university website pages to assist you with closing dates. Information has also been emailed to our students. You may need to complete a SRS (School Recommendation Scheme) application on UAC to assist you with early entry. Please know that any information provided on the SRS will be verified by the Careers team at school. OPEN DAYS - Most universities, colleges and private organisations will have open days from now till early September. We have emailed this information to you but there is information on the www.easthillsboyscareers.com, the websites of your chose university, and there is a notice on the Careers notice board outside the library. Use these open days to gain a feel about a university you are interested in or even go an ask questions related to your intended course of study. APPRENTICESHIPS/ TRAINEESHIPS – Is this what you want to do? Start lining up your opportunities for 2020. We send emails every week from apprenticeship providers and we encourage you to start the process for your post school career. Please come see us if you would like some assistance. IT DOESN’T ALL END THIS TERM – The Careers and Transition team will continue to support you post the HSC. Know that there are many services available to you. Parents – here is your August literacy & numeracy program update

Year 7: Please keep reminding your son to do his Accelerated Reader reading each evening - developing good reading habits will make such a difference to his future schooling and life prospects. Remember - at least 20 minutes of reading per evening is needed!

Year 8: Given the closeness of HSC Minimum Standards tests, this is now a really important period of time for all Year 8 students, and some important preparation programs will shortly commence at the school. To find out about these, all Year 8 parents will be sent a letter, and invited to a school meeting on Monday 26th August, 5:30-6:30 pm. If you can, please make this an absolute priority!

Year 10 & 11 students: Some Year 10 & 11 students still need to sit for HSC Minimum Standards tests in reading, writing and numeracy – either because they missed previous test sessions, or because they are not yet proficient in one or more areas. The Term 3 catch-up test sessions have been scheduled as follows: Year 10 catch-ups in Weeks 5 & 6, and Year 11 catch-ups in Weeks 8 & 10. All students involved in these tests have been, or will be, followed up and supported to ensure that they are as ready as possible. Remember that all test results have been, and will be, forwarded to Students Online accounts, to which all students have access via

their NESA identification numbers. If any parents are uncertain of their sons’ Minimum Standards status, they are very welcome to call me at the school.

All students: Don’t forget - Homework Help is available, after school for one hour in the library, on each Wednesday and

Thursday of the school Term. Assistance, especially in literacy, is available through Ms Willmore at these times. Make use of this valuable time!

ATTENDANCE AT SCHOOL

Why is regular school attendance important?

Regular school attendance will help your child succeed later in life. Attending school every day makes learning easier for your child and helps children build and maintain friendships with other children. If your child doesn’t learn the basic skills in the early years of school, they may develop learning problems in later years.

Why is arriving at school on time important?

Arriving at school on time:

Ensures that your child doesn’t miss out on the important learning activities scheduled early in the day when they

are most alert.

Helps your child to learn the important of punctuality and routine.

Gives your child time to greet their friends before class and therefore reduces the opportunity for classroom

disruption.

Lateness is recorded as a partial absence and must be explained to the school the same way as other forms or absence.

When is being away OK?

Sometimes it’s hard to decide when it is acceptable to keep your child home from school. Below is a list of acceptable and unacceptable examples:

Acceptable Unavoidable medical, specialist or dental appointments (Try to encourage appointments outside school hours, or close to home time.) Urgent family situation (E.g. funerals) Sick or infectious disease (E.g. conjunctivitis)

Unacceptable Shopping Sleeping in Working around the house Minding siblings/other children/older relatives Minor family events (birthdays) Hair cuts Weather conditions: Rainy/Windy/Hot Frequent car problems Frequent late train/bus Airport/Visitors from overseas or other states Other member of the family is sick Hospital Visits to relatives or friends Head Lice (This can be treated effectively at home after school)


The legalities of compulsory school attendance

In Australia, regular school attendance is compulsory between the ages of 6-17. Children of compulsory school age MUST attend school every day that school is open for instruction It is important to understand that the New South Wales Department of Education may prosecute parents (including carers) if children of compulsory school age have recurring numbers of unjustified absences from school. How can you help promote regular attendance of your child?

Send your child to school as much as possible.

Getting to school on time is really important. The first 20 minutes of class is where children learn important skills

and get used to routine. Also, being late can make a child feel behind and left out for the rest of the day.

If your child has been absent, please send a note to explain this absence within 7 days.

Be organised. It’s not always easy when your child springs the permission slip on you on the morning it’s due, but

a good way to avoid problems like this is to ask your child to show you any notes or homework when they get

home from school. You may also need to check their bags yourself!

Sports carnivals, excursions and other special event days are just the same as regular school days. Attendance is

compulsory.

Notes! Notes! Notes! As teachers, we have a legal duty of care when it comes to the safety and wellbeing of all the students enrolled at our schools. To this end, communication between home and school is VERY important. The main way that parents communicate to school staff is in writing.

Absentee notes: If your child is sick, or there is a family emergency, we need to know. This year, the school is

issuing booklets of simple, tear out absentee notes that make it easier for you to send a note to school with your

child. Please ask at the office if you don’t receive one.

Late notes: Life happens, especially in the morning for some reason! If your child is late for school, please send a

short note in with them. Make sure they know to give this to their teacher.

Time limits: Lots of parents don’t realise that schools are only able to accept absentee notes within a certain time

frame. Legally, the school can only accept notes explaining an absence within 7 days of that absence occurring.

After this time frame elapses, the absence must be marked as unexplained.

Take your holidays when we do!

School is an important time in your child’s life, where they learn social and academic skills and the routines and work

ethic that will stay with them throughout their life. But because children need time to be children, there are also

school holidays which allow them time off from the formalities of school. Students in NSW have a total of

approximately 12 weeks off school each year. The school holidays for 2019 are as follows:

Family holidays are an important part of growing up, but so is attending school. For this reason, we ask that wherever

possible, you take your holidays when we do, during school holiday time. Even taking a couple of weeks off school

during term time can make it very hard for your child to catch up on their work and if this is repeated over several

years, children often find themselves falling behind.

If you must schedule your holiday during term time, we ask that you please do the following things before you go:

Complete travel request forms, which can be collected from our front office.

Provide additional documentation, such as travel itineraries. If you do not notify the school, your child’s

absences will be marked down as unexplained.

Attendance is recorded each day. As a parent or caregiver you are responsible for ensuring your child attends school every day, including sports days unless your child:

has an unavoidable medical or dental appointment (preferably these should be made after school or during holidays)

is required to attend a recognised religious holiday is required to attend an exceptional or urgent family circumstance (such as attending a funeral) is sick, or has an infectious illness.

Students need to attend school regularly to meet the course requirements of the Higher School Certificate.

If you are having difficulty getting your child to attend school regularly, you might like to talk to the school principal or the school counsellor.

If your child has to be absent from school for any reason, including arriving late or leaving early, please either tell your child's teacher or the administration assistant at our school, or explain the reason by phone, email, or written note as soon as possible and within seven days. The school uses automated SMS to inform parents of any unexplained absences or unexplained late arrivals. You can reply to this SMS with the reason for your son’s absence so our system can be updated accordingly. Please reply with a valid reason eg. – sick, religious holiday, etc. Replying with a “Yes” does not validate your son’s absence and further correspondence will be sent.

Medical Certificates Principals are legally responsible for keeping accurate records of student attendance. Principals are also responsible for

deciding if the reason given for an absence is justified. For this reason, Principals may request medical certificates or other

documentation for long or frequent absences explained by parents as being due to illness. If Principals don’t consider an

explanation to be satisfactory, they will record the absence as unjustified.

There is no place for bullies at East Hills Boys High School. Bullying behaviours will not be tolerated and they include:

1. Verbal and Visual Bullying: Teasing, name calling, offensive language, notes, graffiti, email, text messages, phone calls.

2. Physical Bullying: Pushing, tripping, punching, hitting, slapping. 3. Exclusion: Ignoring, isolating a person 4. Victimisation: Ganging up, threats, spreading rumours, whispering. 5. Emotional Abuse: Personal or family insults, threatening to withdraw friendship, isolation. 6. Extortion: Stand-over tactics, demanding money or goods, damaging or stealing other’s

possessions. 7. Racial or Sexual Abuse: Attacks or discrimination because of their race or gender.

No one has to tolerate this – you don’t have to!

If you feel that you are being bullied, if you feel that you are experiencing any of the behaviours listed above, or if you see them occurring, see a staff member immediately. Every instance of bullying is followed up.

What to do if YOU are being bullied by any person at school:

1. If you can, walk away, ignore the bully and try not to show how upset you are. 2. If you can, state quite clearly that you don’t like the behaviour, that it is unwelcome and

offensive. 3. Complete a bullying referral form. (You can find these on the school website) One has

Administration Procedures

Sickness Policy

If your child is sick at home prior to school, please do not send him to school. If your child is sick when Exams are on a medical certificate is required from his doctor.

When your child is absent from school please advise the office promptly with an acceptable reason. Sleeping in is not an acceptable reason.

Proof of Residence

When the student changes address we require a form to be completed, which can be obtained from the office. All details must be completed and evidence supplied with change of address eg. electricity bill, lease agreement.

Payments of Office

As you know, East Hills Boys High School is focused on providing the best possible resources and technology to educate and prepare your child for the future. Payment of school fees is essential in helping provide these resources. Please pay fees before by end of term.

Attendance

School starts at 8.50am. Please be here before that time so as not to disturb other students learning. Again, to prevent disruption to students learning times, please try to make appointments out of school hours. We understand that with some specialist appointments choosing a time is not available. In those instances, please follow the schools early leaving policy.

STUDENTS LEAVING SCHOOL EARLY

The procedure for taking students out of school during school hours is as follows:

Students need to bring a letter from the parent and take it to a Deputy Principal before Roll Call to

have Early Leave approved.

Students then bring the letter to the front office.

Students return to the front office at the time of leaving to sign out and collect an Early Leavers Slip.

Just a reminder regarding your BYOD Permission notes should be returned to your Year Advisor when you

have organised your device to use at school.

TUESDAYS are a no device day as you will be attending sport.

Please remember to use your device responsibly.

It is YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to ensure your device is always in a secure

and damage free location.

Your device should come to school fully charged ready for your lessons

CHANGE OF POLICY

In 2016 EHBHS in conjunction with our P&C agreed to a one off $100 fee to ensure all books

and resources were returned in a satisfactory condition, which would be refunded when your

child leaves school. Due to the recent changes within the DEC all new students attending from

the 2018 academic school year will be charged a one off non-refundable Textbook Levy of

$100.00 which covers of borrowing Library, English & Maths books/resources. This fee will be

expected to be paid prior to students borrowing Library, English & Maths books/resources in

2018. Students attending prior to 2017 will still be eligible to the refund under the previous

system.

MOTOR VEHICLE CONSENT (Use of private motor vehicles by students to and from school)

CONDITIONS

i) The Principal’s consent must be gained before any student uses their motor vehicle to transport to

and from school.

ii) Cars can be driven to and from school by students only with written parental consent.

iii) Student drivers are expected to conform to the road rules at all times and to ensure that no more

passengers are carried than are provided for by fitted seat belts.

iv) No student may travel as a passenger in a car driven by another student to or from school without

written parental consent.

v) Students driving vehicles must hold a valid driver's license.

vi) Vehicles being driven by students must have current registration and current comprehensive and third party property insurance and have seat belts fitted for all passengers.

vii) Student drivers should not charge passengers a fare since this may invalidate their insurance policies.

CHANGES TO OUR PAYMENT PROCESS

To provide a more efficient and secure payment system East Hills Boys High

School will implement an online payment system as at 17 February 2017, via a

secure payment page hosted by Westpac.

Payment can be made using either a Visa or MasterCard Credit card or debit

card, and can be made via computer, tablet or mobile phone.

The payment page is accessed from the front page of the schools website by

selecting the “$ MAKE A PAYMENT” icon. (see above)

Items that can be paid include school/subject contribution, excursions, sport,

creative and practical arts (ie band, drama or dance), miscellaneous sales to

students (ie calculator or printing etc). There is also a category called “Other”

this covers items not covered in the previous headings, Other can be used to

make a complete payment of a school invoice.

When you access the “$ MAKE A PAYMENT” icon you must enter:

The students name, class and reference number or

The students name and date of birth or

The Student Registration number and invoice number as listed on

statements sent periodically to families

THESE DETAILS ARE ENTERED EACH TIME YOU MAKE A PAYMENT AS

STUDENT INFORMATION IS NOT HELD WITHIN THE SECURE PAYMENT

SYSTEM

This is a secure payment system hosted by Westpac to ensure that your

credit/debit card details are captured in a secure manner, these details are not

passed back to the school.

You have the ability to check and change any details of the payment before the

payment is processed. Receipts can be emailed &/or printed immediately.

Receipt numbers should be recorded on Fees/Excursion/Statement note and

returned to school asap as we need a signed permission note for your child to

participate in school activities or receive resources. Westpac passes daily

payment details to the school, however no further receipt is given by the school.

The example to the left displays the payment details page. Once you select the

“NEXT” icon you are moved to a secure payment page to enter your private

payment information.

There is an opportunity for casual or ongoing bookings of school facilities available for churches, community groups,
