Dear friends,

India has 16 percent of the world's population, 2.5 percentof the global land mass and only 4 percent of the world'swater resources. 1 in 3 Asians do not have access to safedrinking water and more than 40 per cent of the urban poorin the continent do not have piped water in their homes. Withadded challenges like dependence on agriculture, climatechange, depleting water tables and rising population, theneed to 'manage' our scarce water resources has perhapsnever been greater.

While we think of efficient ways to collect, distribute,manage and even recycle our precious water resources, it isimportant to ensure the long term sustainability of the earth'swater supply - a fact that often gets neglected in the highlycompetitive, 'here & now' world we live in. An integratedwater resources perspective ensures that social, economic,environmental and technical dimensions are considered inthe management and development of water resources.

Technology has a key role to play in facilitating this processand must be leveraged effectively when setting up newfacilities or upgrading existing infrastructure across the valuechain of supply, processing and distribution of water.Efficiency, energy saving, optimization, control & monitoringand all other parameters that drive productivity in anyindustrial application are just as relevant to the water sectorand we must approach it in this manner.

Boeing has selected an ABB ACS 5000variable speed drive system for its Vertical/Short Takeoff and Landing Wind Tunnel(BVWT V/STOL) in Philadelphia in theUnited States.

ABB has delivered a combined heat andpower generating plant in Poland thatproduces electricity, district heating andpetroleum products from natural gas thatwas previously flared off and wasted. Thegas is now pumped through an 82-kilometer-long underwater pipeline to anew facility that consists of a CombinedHeat and Power (CHP) plant and a gasprocessing station. At the plant, thegas is used to generate 76,000 (MWH)megawatt-hours of electricity annually forthe Polish grid, produces heat for the

Sinceits operations, 11,000 boats have beentransferred and the system has proven reliablethroughout the five-year warranty period.Parks Canada is a very satisfied customer,and the unique installation reaffirms ABB'smine-hoist expertise and quality equipment.

ABB has been awarded a turnkey contract by Karnataka PowerTransmission Corporation Limited (KPTCL) to implement an integratedNetwork Manager SCADA/ EMS/DMS (Supervisory Control and DataAcquisition, Energy Management System, Distribution ManagementSystem) solution. The scope of the project includes design,engineering, supply, installation, testing & commissioning and isexpected to be completed in around 24 months.

The system will monitor and control 830 main transmission anddistribution substations spread across the state of Karnataka, includingthe city of Bangalore. This initiative will significantly help strengthen thetransmission and distribution network for KPTCL and its constituentdistribution utilities. KPTCL is Karnataka's leading power transmissionutility and serves over 11 million customers across the state.

ABB has been chosen by Grasim Industries' Cement division andUltratech Cement, part of the Aditya Birla Group, to supply power andautomation products and systems for their cement capacity expansions.ABB India will provide turnkey electrical and automation systemsincluding the installation of 220 / 132 kV switchyards and supply of arange of switchgear, motors, low and medium voltage drives, powerand distribution transformers, capacitors as well as intelligentLV panels. The project is expected to be completed by the end of 2007.

Providing integrated building solutionsABB recently received an order to provide integrated buildingsolutions for LM Glassfiber – the world's leading manufacturer ofrotor blades for wind turbines. The new facility is located at Dobospetin Bangalore and is expected to be operational by mid 2007.ABB's scope of work includes the complete design, engineering,supply, installation and commissioning of complete HVAC,Electricals and Building Automation. This encompasses 500 TR ofair-conditioning, pumps, Air handling units, cooling towers,transformers, light fixtures, LV Panel and distribution boards, streetlighting, CCTV & access control system, fire alarm system and aBuilding Management System.

ABB has received an order for Feeder Renovation that will helpprovide reliable and efficient power supply in rural areas of fourdistribution circles in Rajasthan. The order for 9 packages of theFRP scheme has been received from Jaipur Vidyut Vitaran NigamLimited (JVVNL), which distributes and supplies power in 12 districtsof Rajasthan.

ABB products and systems will help provide continuous and reliablepower supply to villages covered in the four distribution circles, i.e.,Jaipur, Dausa, Alwar and Jhalawar. As part of the project ABB willalso help JVVNL increase the life-span of distribution transformers,bring down the AT & C losses and cut down peak demand inagricultural season. In addition to system design and executionABB will supply and install 11 kV 3 phase ACSR weasel conductorand LT 1 phase aerial bunched cable. Scope of the project alsoincludes installation of over 18,000 25 KVA distribution transformercenters and more than 100,000 meters.

Bringing light to the desert

As part of its commitment to nation building, ABB is executing severalrural electrification projects across India.

The laboratory has been accredited by the National AccreditationBoard for Laboratories (NABL). The facility is designed to test HighVoltage circuit breakers up to 420 kV. The laboratory is alsoequipped with CCTVs for remote monitoring of test objects and anin-house studio for still photography.

A wide range of tests can be performed at the laboratory includingClose and Open Q-C, C-Q, Q-C-Q, any combination of close andopen operations, minimum function coil voltage, spring charge,slip coupling, damping curve, static resistance and dynamicresistance, test of disconnectors, pre-insertion resistors, SF6 gastightness test & SF6 gas quality test. Special mechanical tests liketerminal load test and customized operations long mid-voltage CBsequences can also be conducted at the lab.

A K Singh, Director, Electrical Research and Development Agency(ERDA) complimented ABB for taking the initiative to set up thelab in an effort to enhance the quality and reliability of products. "Iam impressed by the state-of-the-art technology in thelaboratory”, he said.

ABB recently held customer conclaves inBangalore and Nashik. The Power SystemsCustomer Conclave, at Bangalore wasattended by many of India's leading utilitiesand industry customers including NTPC,PGCIL, DMRC, L&T, TPC, TNEB, KPCL,Suzlon, APTRANSCO and MSETCL to namea few. The main objective of the conclavewas to share insights on the latest technologicaldevelopments and discuss key issues. Theevent culminated with a live demonstrationof ABB's capabilities in System Integrationand an expert panel addressing issues in anOpen House Session.

ABB showcased some of its latest power products and systemsat the GRIDTECH exhibition recently held in Delhi. The eventdrew thousands of customers including important policy makers

ABB also featured the WebCTRL(R)technology which offers significantintegration possibilities and complies withinternet and web standards, offering fullflexibility to communicate with anycomputer via the World Wide Web. ABB India enters the billion dollar leagueABB India's cumulative order intake of 56,236 MINR (appx.1.3BUSD) for the year 2006 grew 50 per cent over the previous year,taking it into the elite billion dollar league. Developed in collaboration with industryleaders like Dow Chemical, the latestversion of ABB's Extended AutomationSystem 800xA is winning acclaim for its

unique engineering capability andunparalleled focus on eliminating processdowntime. Version 5.0 of ABB's System800xA extended automation platform isequipped with new engineering functionsthat let the customers make applicationchanges without interrupting production andincurring downtime. New to the platform isLoad-Evaluate-GO, a tool developed incollaboration with Dow Chemical Company,as well as Multi-User and DistributedEngineering, a remote collaboration tool forengineers working from different locationson the same project. Both new functionsare unique to System 800xA.

Load-Evaluate-GO lets customers addprograms, modify configurations and

implement software upgrades whileproduction is running, and then simulateand evaluate the impact these changeswill have on the production process.Once the application changes havebeen evaluated, the customer canchoose to execute, modify or discardthem. The new sensor uses a cutting-edgesilicon micro-electromechanical chip,encased in a ceramic housing withintegrated electro-optical componentsand optimized magnetic excitation.

The chip's main advantage over theclassical paramagnetic solution is thedrastically reduced volume of the sensorchamber. This cuts response time fromthree seconds to just one. In marketswhere speed is essential - such as

monitoring combustion engines - thisis a significant breakthrough. Theplanar sensor chip is a key feature ofthe sensor's layered structure, whichallows automated assembly and cost-efficient mass-production. The sensoris also highly resistant to corrosivegases and has negligible sensitivity togases other than oxygen. Thanks to lowproduction costs and quicker responsetimes, the new sensor is expected tochange the way oxygen is measured-it competes in price and performancewith classic, high-performanceparamagnetic sensors, as well as thelow-cost electrochemical devices.

Compatibility tool boosts grid reliabilityABB has developed a simple softwaretool to analyze compliance of sub-stationautomation devices and systems withthe new global substation standard IEC61850. As a solution provider, ABB mustensure that all devices are workingharmoniously by measuring key qualityfigures and demonstrating that thesystems meet the required specifications.

ABB has developed a set of tools tosupport the process of testing and

commissioning compliant systems. Thesoftware enables substation automationengineers to analyze 61850-based systemsquickly and reliably by simply plugging alaptop into a substation communicationnetwork. The software searches forautomation devices in a network, inspectstheir configuration and examines networktraffic. It helps to detect network problemsand inspects the implementation of the IEC61850 protocol. The software also verifies

engineering data against actual dataloaded on physical devices, checkingfor inconsistencies, which may manifestduring or after the activation of asubstation automation system.

What is the concept of liftirrigation? Could you throw lighton the importance of this conceptto provide relief to parched areas?The basic principle of lift irrigation is topump water from a low lying river or waterbody to a large reservoir constructed at ahigher terrain. From these reservoirs wateris released (by gravity) to a network of canals/channels to irrigate the surrounding landareas. This principle can also be applied toa multistage process where water from onereservoir is allowed to cascade to anotherbringing elevated areas under irrigation.

Lift irrigation schemes are extremelyeffective in bringing relief to rocky and hillyterrains as well as fields above the level ofthe water source. These areas can beirrigated effectively, thereby opening upmore fields for cultivation and allowingcrops to grow all year round. Farmers inlandscapes such as these can actuallyconvert stony land to green fields throughlift irrigation. This then enables them notonly to grow traditional crops but also todiversify into growing flowers, fruit, andvegetables.

With the agricultural sector poisedfor modernisation, what are the keyinitiatives required with respect toirrigation projects in the country?Irrigated agriculture has driven much of theincrease in global food production over therecent decades. While only 20% of the world'sfarmland is irrigated, it produces 40% of ourfood supply. The highest yields obtainedfrom irrigation are more than double thehighest yields from rainfed agriculture - evenlow-input irrigation is more productive thanhigh-input rainfed farming. The Indian economydepends on the agricultural sector, which isa primary source of livelihood for 70% of thepopulation. Of the total water available, about85% goes into agriculture and one shouldremember that assured irrigation for agricultureis critical for economic development.

Agriculture modernization involves morethan providing water for irrigation. It isnecessary to make irrigation agriculture

investment packages more comprehensive,including addressing issues related toresource distribution and access to supportservices. Irrigation alone is not sufficient forachieving the desired level of improvementsin productivity for poverty reduction. Toincrease productivity of our land it is necessaryto match crops to the soil type, select properseeds, and arrange proper fertilizers inaddition to adequate water. The principles of"self help group" for arranging micro financingand "e-choupal" for delivering informationsystem needs be encouraged / adopted.Irrigation projects should be developed asa complementary support to the farmers.Only large scale irrigation schemes withouteffort to increase the productivity of ourirrigable lands, will not be competitive in theliberalized world.

The government has recognized that theAgriculture growth at 2.3% is significantlyless than the desired 4%. In order to boostgrowth in this sector and the economy, theRs 11,000 crore allocated in the budget forirrigation projects is a welcome step.However, it must be reiterated that theirrigation projects must have involvementfrom farmers - effort and monetary to bringabout a sense of ownership. In addition theGovernment has declared 2007 as the"water year". This will help rally support ofall stakeholders varying from policy makers,technology providers, communities andNGOs to Indian farmers.

What is the role of power andautomation technologies in yoursector? What other applications ofwater management can benefitfrom such technologies.Farmers irrigate their fields during periodsof dry weather to ensure normal growth. Asthe irrigators are driven by the water flow,constant pressure is essential for evenwater distribution over the fields.Automation Technologies like motors,automatic pump control, frequencyconverters etc can play an important role inconserving water and ensuring that theirrigation is sustainable. Some of the

benefits of using technology in irrigationprojects are:� Even water distribution due to accurate

flow control

� Reduced energy consumption throughoptimum flow control

� Lower maintenance costs as pressureshocks are eliminated

� Lower labour costs due to automaticcontrol

Each project needs to be optimallydesigned with the right technologies for acost effective solution. Technologies forwater management, reducing waste waterand irrigation scheduling will becomeincreasingly critical as the global waterscarcity situation increases.

What has been your experience ofworking with ABB as a partner?We are currently working with ABB on Liftirrigation projects - the Kalwakurthy LiftIrrigation Project and the Bhima LiftIrrigation Project (Phase II) in AndhraPradesh. ABB is providing turnkey electro-mechanical packages for both irrigationprojects. ABB's turnkey solution includesthe 220 kV switchyard, powertransformers, a SCADA system, largesynchronous machines LCI startingequipment, control & relay panels,excitation equipment, instrumentation andcontrols. These projects will make a hugedifference to thousands of farmers in theKrishna River basin and will impact nearly500,000 acres of agricultural land.

Our relationship with ABB is relatively new andour experience has been good till date. Aswe move forward with more projects I hopeto see this relationship mature into amutually beneficial one.

Eight sets of ABB drive packages at theHuinanzhuang pump station near Beijingpump water up a 60 meter slope at 60cubic meters per second and bring safe,stable and sanitary supplies to the capital

of Beijing and the surrounding region.ABB will deliver eight sets of 7.3 megawattACS6000 drive packages, includingtransformers, frequency converters andmachines to power the stations' centrifugalwater pumps and machinery.

In recent years, high levels of economicgrowth has compelled the country tolaunch new steps to manage, preserveand redistribute its precious waterresources. This includes the multi-billiondollar south-to-north water diversionprojects, the largest scheme of its kind inthe world. This ambitious undertaking willsend billions of cubic meters of water from

the south to satisfy spiraling demand forwater in the country's dry, resource-richnorth, where booming populations inBeijing and Tianjin, massive constructionactivities and an arid climate haveconspired to create chronic watershortages. Huinanzhuang is the onlymajor pump station to be built in the mainchannel of the middle diversion route.

Planning of the south-to-north diversionprojects began in the 1950s, and theentire scheme was expected to takeabout 50 years to complete. The Chinesegovernment expects to divert 44.8 billioncubic meters of water annually by 2050.

The Bondi sewage treatment plant, locatedbelow ground adjacent to Bondi Golf course,has benefited from a complete make-overthrough technology supplied by ABB.Serving Sydney city and the Eastern suburbsand with a customer base of 500,000; thefacility is in need of improvements and isbeing renewed and modernised under theBondi Reliability Improvement andModernisation Program (RIAMP). Inaddition to bringing the system up to date,Sydney Water wanted to see a reduction inthe amount of manual input that the currentsystem demanded and was looking for theinstallation of more intelligent and automaticequipment. In addition to these requirements

were the added constraints of Bondi beingan underground treatment plant, with anyextra digging dramatically increasingproject costs.

ABB was able to provide a compactswitchboard that meant very little extra

digging was necessary and the savingsgained were diverted into the provision ofleading edge switchgear. ABB supplied theirMNS low voltage system, a pump controlsystem, together with variable speed drivesand a dedicated energy distribution system.The motor control system applicationutilises the latest motor protection relaytechnology and allows remote communicationwith the control room, with capacity in thefuture for wireless operations if required.There was a high level of customisation onthis project with ABB developing specificsoftware and hardware for the protectionrelay in order to display certain informationthat Sydney Water required.

Control system for giant desalination plantABB is supplying a state-of-the-art control system to integrate thelargest seawater desalination plant in the southern hemisphere intothe Western Australia water network. The plant will feed the samenetwork as another ABB automation project - the 700-kilometerGoldfields Pipeline, the longest potable water pipeline in the world.The Perth Seawater Desalination Plant will feed 45 gigaliters ofdrinking water a year into the state's integrated water system andwill boost the dwindling water supplies in one of the largest statesin the world.

ABB is supplying a network control system based on itsMicroSCADA and RTU560 technology to enable the waterproduced at the desalination plant to flow into the Perth waterdistribution network. The solution includes upgrading the existingMicroSCADA control system with new functionality, like profilingand cascade PID (Proportional-Integral-Derivative) control across

As the underlying technologies evolve, embedded systems are

finding their way into an increasing range of ABB products and

applications. Advances in this technology lead to higher

performance and more functionality on the one hand, and reduced

cost and size on the other. While this benefits the end user, the ever

increasing complexity of embedded systems imposes new

challenges for developers. This article provides a brief introduction to

the use and application of embedded system technology in ABB’s

power and automation products – and the challenges being faced

now and in the future.

Embedded systems are special purposecomputer systems that are totally integratedand enclosed by the devices that they serveor control – hence the term “embeddedsystems”. While this is a generally accepteddefinition of embedded systems, it does notgive many clues as to the specialcharacteristics the systems possess.

How is ABB applying embeddedsystems?The first question is: How do embeddedsystems differ from general-purpose computersystems? The answer is, it depends. Bydefinition, an embedded system is designedto perform a set of predefined tasks. Thiscould range in complexity from simplesupervision of the operation of an electricalswitch, to controlling the movements of apowerful and highly flexible industrial robot.The two solutions, accordingly, will lookcompletely different. The former would beoptimized for very low cost, high volumeproduction and the execution of a small setof pre-defined algorithms. The latter wouldbe designed for computing complex,programmable movement paths andtransforming the signals that control themotors of the manipulator.

The second question to ask is: Why do weneed embedded systems? The answer tothis is that general-purpose computers, likePCs, would be far too costly for the majorityof products that incorporate some form ofembedded system technology. A general-purpose solution might also fail to meet anumber of functional or performancerequirements such as constraints in power-consumption, size-limitations, reliability orreal-time performance.

years. The concepts that underlie some ofthese technologies have evolved slowly:modern power transformers, for instance,work according to the same principles asthey did in the early days of electric powertransmission. And despite huge progress inswitching technologies and material science,circuit breakers have been based on thesame principles for the last fifty years. Nowthat small and powerful microcontrollersare available at low cost, embedded systemcomponents are finding their way into theselong-established products. Here, theembedded systems typically perform asecondary function: they are used tosupervise, protect or control the primary

function of the product. The technology is away of providing these attributes morecheaply, than the alternatives, or with newvalue-added features.

Many other product families now offered byABB could not have been conceived withoutembedded system technology. Examplesare Distributed Control Systems (DCS) thatcan safely automate and control large andcomplex industrial plants, such as oil refineries,power plants and paper mills. In the earlydays of industrial automation, relay logicwas used to perform simple control functions.With the advent of integrated circuits andthe first commercial microcontrollers in theseventies and eighties, programmableindustrial controllers were introduced toperform more complex control logic. Today,ABB’s Industrial IT Extended AutomationSystem 800xA integrates widely distributedand intelligent field devices with high-levelsystem functions that optimize productionassets, as well as the process itself.

Industrial requirementsIndustrial requirements vary enormouslyfrom application to application, but specialindustrial requirements typically include:

� Availability and reliability� Safety� Real-time, deterministic response� Power consumption� Lifetime

Availability and reliabilityAutomation and power systems must havevery high availability and be extremelyreliable in order to minimize the cost ofoperation (i.e. to minimize scheduled aswell as unplanned maintenance time).

SafetyWhile customers demand high quality andreliability from most of their embeddedsystems, it is not necessarily critical if, say,a PDA (personal digital assistant) needs tobe restarted after an application causes thesystem to fail. For industrial applications,however, the effect of a failure in thesystem could be devastating. A gasleakage at an oil platform, for example,must be detected and followed by a safeshutdown of the process. Otherwise,expensive assets – or even human lives –could be at risk. Similarly, instabilities inpower transmission and distributionnetworks should be detected before theyare allowed to propagate and cause largeblackouts. Economic security and personalsafety depend on high-integrity systems.ABB uses embedded systems in suchmission-critical configurations. Specialdevelopment processes and designmethodologies are implemented to provideproven and certified high-integrity products.

Real-time properties‘Real-time’ is a term often associated withembedded systems. Because thesesystems are used to control or monitorreal-time processes, they must be able toperform certain tasks reliably within a giventime. But the definition of ‘real-time’ varieswith the application. A chemical reaction,

for instance, may proceed slowly, and thetemperature at a given point may need tobe read no more than once per second.However, the schedule must bepredictable. At the other end of the scale,protection devices for high-voltageequipment need to sample currents andvoltages thousands of times per second inorder to detect and, where necessary, actwithin a fraction of a power-cycle.

Power consumptionAt first glance, the power consumption ofindustrial electronics may appearinsignificant because of the abundance ofpower that is available. However, thispower is not always available, and the needto keep installation costs low has created ademand for electrical protection devicesthat do not require a separate power

supply for the electronics; these devicesare self-sufficient with respect to powerand meet their needs by extracting smallamounts of energy from their surroundings.Wireless sensors for buildings-, factories -or process-automation must offer years ofbattery life or a completely autonomousmode of operation. Self-sufficient powersupplies can be designed to extract minutelevels of energy from electromagnetic orsolar power, temperature gradients orvibration in the environment. This isfrequently referred to as energy“harvesting.” Even when power is available,low-power design can be used to reducethe generation of excessive heat that wouldotherwise necessitate expensive and error-prone cooling devices.

Lifecycle issuesYet another requirement that is frequentlyimposed on industrial embedded systemsis a long lifetime of the product itself andthe lifecycle of the product family. Whilemodern consumer electronics may beexpected to last for less than five years,most industrial devices are expected to

work in the field for 20 years or more.This imposes challenges not only on therobustness of the electronics, but also onhow the product should be handledthroughout its lifecycle: Hardwarecomponents, operating systems anddevelopment tools are constantly evolvingand individual products eventuallybecome obsolete.

Key issues in developing embeddedsystemsSome challenges involved in the designof embedded systems have not reallychanged in the last couple of decades.The drive for increased performance atreduced cost and size, for instance, willcontinue as long as developments in theunderlying technologies will permit. Otherchallenges involved in embedded systemdesign are changing rapidly. Three areasshould be given particular attention:complexity, connectivity and usability.

ComplexityWhile the steadily increasing transistordensity and speeds of integrated circuitsoffer tremendous opportunities, theseimprovements also present developers(individuals, teams, organizations) with ahuge challenge: how to handle the addedcomplexity? A modern embedded systemcan consist of hundreds of thousand linesof software code.

More and more products now includecomplex embedded systems and thedevelopment organizations must evolvewith the products and their technologies.It is necessary to establish suitabledevelopment processes, methods andtools. ABB utilizes its global reach to applybest practices developed in one part of itsorganization to others to improve overall

performance. Developing productplatforms also ensures re-use oftechnology and increased efficiency.

The emergence of SoC hasenabled extremely powerfulsystems to run on configurableplatforms that contain all thebuilding blocks of anembedded system.

ConnectivityBefore the widespread deployment ofdigital communication, most embeddedsystems operated in a stand-alone mode.They may have had some capabilities forremote supervision and control, but, byand large, most functions were performedautonomously. This is changing rapidly.Embedded systems are now often part ofsophisticated distributed networks. Simplesensors with basic transmitter electronicshave been replaced by complex, intelligentfield devices. As a consequence, individualproducts can no longer be designed inisolation; they must have commoncomponents. Communication has gonefrom being a small part of a system tobeing a significant function. Where serialpeer-to-peer communication was once theonly way to connect a device to a controlsystem, field buses are now able tointegrate large numbers of complexdevices. The need to connect differentapplications within a system to informationand services in field devices drives theintroduction of standard ICT technologieslike Ethernet and web-services.

UsabilityComplex field devices are oftenprogrammable or configurable. Today’spressure transmitters can contain severalhundred parameters. The interaction witha device – either from a built-in panel orfrom a software application in the system –has become more complex. The task ofhiding this complexity from the userthrough the creation of a user-friendlydevice has sometimes beenunderestimated. Most other requirementsare easily quantifiable or absolute, but“usability” is somewhat harder to define.Yet an embedded system that is intuitiveand simple to operate will reduce the costof commissioning and maintenance. It willreduce errors and be a key factor in the

overall customer satisfaction. That is whyusability is given a high priority in thedesign and development of ABB products,from the conceptual stage, right through tothe final testing.

Embedded systems – latest trendsABB is shaping the future of powerand automation through innovativeproducts and solutions, and embeddedsystems technologies are increasinglyimportant in what the company does.That is why, to stay ahead of the game,ABB must anticipate the emerging trendsand opportunities. One such trend isSoC – Systems on Chip. The emergenceof SoC has enabled extremely powerfulsystems – including hardware andsoftware – to run on configurableplatforms that contain all the buildingblocks of an embedded system;microprocessors, DSPs, programmablehardware logic, memory, communicationprocessors and display drivers, to givebut a few examples.

ABB technology has helped Italianstudents develop a unique, hand-shapedkeyboard that lets deaf and blind peoplesend electronic messages that can beread on a computer display. Within a year,the keyboard will be equipped to acceptand display return messages as well.The hand shaped pad is equipped withspecial sensors and software to serveas a keyboard.

A helping hand for the deaf and blind

As one of its sustainability pillars, ABBhas an ongoing programme to supportunderprivileged students in schools inthe vicinity of its major manufacturingfacilities across India. Besidesproviding infrastructure support thecompany is deepening its engagementwith the students, through mid-daymeals, educational visits and otherprogrammes to facilitate learning.

In keeping with this endeavor, ABBrecently organized an eye camp forover 800 students of the

The two day eye campwas organized in association withRotary Health City and voluntary servicedoctors from Narayana Nethralaya,a leading health organization. Dr Ashwin Mallipatna, from NarayanaNethralaya who was the lead doctor forthe eye camp said "I would like tocongratulate ABB on the wonderfulorganisation of the school eye check-up. We are touched by yourcommitment to their well being. Pleasekeep up the good work."

Over 100 children will be further testedfor vision related ailments and freespectacles will be provided as required.

ABB drives slash energybill at giant aquariumABB variable speed driveshave reduced the annualenergy bill at one ofEurope's biggest aquaticattractions by $30,000 -nearly equivalent to its yearly waterbill. The nine ABB ACS550 variablespeed - recirculate millions of litersof water in the giant tanks of theNational Marine Aquarium, thebiggest oceanic museum andmarine conservation center in theUnited Kingdom.

With millions of liters of seawater inthe tanks - including 2.5 million litersin the three-storey Mediterraneanaquarium, the largest tank of its kindin Europe - the expense of continuouslypumping huge volumes of water atthe correct flow and pressure is oneof the NMA's single biggest costs.

A person with severe sensory deficits likeblindness can place a hand on the keyboardand use a familiar style of blind/deafcommunication known as the Malossialphabet, a hand-to-hand method in whichpeople press and pinch specific areas ofthe fingers and palm corresponding toletters. The new technology converts theirpinching and pressing motions intoelectronic impulses that can be relayed to a

monitor and read by a sighted person.The development is part of an ongoingABB programme to involve localstudents in the business of researchand development.

ABB India sustainability team holds stakeholder dialogueOne of the key sustainability pillars of ABBIndia's sustainability programme is to supportprimary schools for under-privilegedchildren, as part of India's effort to alleviateilliteracy, often a pre-cursor to many othersocial challenges. As part of this initiative,ABB in India provides infrastructuresupport and has a deeper engagementprogramme aimed at improving the qualityof primary education in select governmentsupported schools, located close to majormanufacturing locations.

In keeping with this objective, theABB India Foundation, a registeredtrust that helps drive the sustainabilityprogramme, held a stakeholderdialogue on 3rd March 2007 inVadodara. The forum broughttogether representatives from thecity education board, governmentfunctionaries, educationists andNGO representatives in addition tothe members of the ABB Indiafoundation.

Helping launch satellites into space

Sea Launch, the world's only private ocean-based satellite launch services provider, uses mission-critical systems supplied by ABB. Sea Launch successfully launched the XM-4 broadcast satellite atthe end of October. The Boeing 702 spacecraft will broadcast digital radio programs to seven millionXM Satellite Radio subscribers throughout the United States and parts of Canada.

Sea Launch consists of a launch platform and command vessel, both of which are equipped with acomplete range of ABB power and automation solutions that Sea Launch classifies as "missioncritical." These range from integrated automation and safety systems to complete electric powergeneration and distribution systems for the Odyssey Launch Platform and the Sea LaunchCommander. ABB also supplied the bow and azimuth thruster motors for both vessels.

Voltage indicator makes workplace safer

VisiVolt is a voltage indicator designed to minimize the risk of electrocution for workers on indoorand outdoor medium-voltage systems. Electrical accidents have many causes; equipmentmalfunction combined with a momentary distraction can be fatal. Poorly trained workers mayapproach a live distribution panel instead of one that has been disconnected, leading to direconsequences.

The VisiVolt indicator can be permanently installed, directly on current bars and conductors, usingsimple fittings. This compact device indicates the presence of a voltage by displaying a large andhighly visible "lightning" arrow symbol on its liquid crystal display (LCD), providing an activereminder of the potential hazards of working in and around electrical systems.

Precision machines hold heavy loads

ABB's new FlexPLP machine can perform precision tasks and hold heavy objects within the tight,narrow confines of a factory production line. The FlexPLP (Flexible Programmable Lean Positioner)is, unlike regular industrial robots that are equipped with extendible arms and handle variousmaterials at high speeds over long, measured distances. The FlexPLP is a machine that providesprecise manipulation and an ability to position heavy loads precisely in constrained spaces.FlexPLP can support three times its own weight, yet is small enough to operate in an automotiveproduction line. It could, for example, do the fine detail work of positioning locator pins and then carry a car underbody to the nextpoint in the production line. FlexPLP is thus a highly flexible bodyshop all in itself. Automotive factories are the first of manypossible applications for these versatile machines, which have the potential to improve production in any industry.

Right mix for cement makers

The most important aspect of modern cement plant quality control is the Raw Mix Proportioning(RMP) system. The RMP system defines the proportions in which the main raw minerals of thecement-making process (limestone, clay, sand and iron ore) are mixed. The task of RMP controlis made particularly difficult by the highly variable chemical composition of the minerals that aredug out of the ground. To meet this challenge, ABB has developed an innovative, state-of-the-art solution for the RMP problem.

The solution is part of the OptimizeIT Expert Optimizer suite. It executes online control of thecement kiln feeders, where the various raw minerals are stored. This guarantees an optimal trade-off that balances deviations inquality targets and material cost. The system's control algorithm is based on the latest control technologies, such as ModelBased Control, which allow the cement plant's dynamic behavior to be simulated using mathematical models of the feeders,conveyor belts, mills, silos, etc. The crucial mixing operation becomes predictive, rather than reactive. ABB was the first to comeup with an advanced model-based application for the RMP process.
