A WORD FROM DR. STEWART At times you may feel like we hit you over the head about oral health care. But good dental and oral care is just too important to maintaining healthy teeth and gums for your lifetime, as well as your overall health. Oral problems which include bad breath, dry mouth, canker or cold sores, TMD, tooth decay, or thrush are all treatable with proper dignosis and care. But good oral health involves more than just brushing your teeth and flossing. To keep your teeth and mouth healthy for a lifetime of use, there are steps that you should follow. Talk to us about any special conditions in your mouth and any ways in which your medical/health conditions affect your teeth or oral health. Cancer treatment, heart disease, diabetes and even pregnancy can all impact your oral health and may dictate a change in the dental care we give you. Brush your teeth at least twice a day (morning and before bed) and floss at least once a day. These activities remove plaque, which if not removed, combines with sugars to form acids that lead to tooth decay. Bacterial plaque also causes gum disease and other periodontal diseases. You should examine your mouth regularly. Become familiar with your mouth and teeth through frequent examination. This way, you will be able to catch any changes at an early stage and come in to see us for further examination. If you use any type of tobacco products, quit. Eat a healthier diet and limit your snacking. Eat a variety of foods, but eat fewer foods that contain sugars and starches as they produce the most acids in the mouth, which begin the decay process. Make your oral health a priority and visit us on a regular basis. For most of our patients, this means every 6 months, but there are some that require more frequent exams. And don’t be afraid to ask me for more information if you don’t understand a treatment or procedure. We’re in this together!
