There’s a famous quote by St. Augustine of Hippo which says “The world is a book and those who do not travel read only one page.” Indeed most people are aware that travelling the world does wonders in broadening one’s mind through new encounters. Such is the advantage of students who have taken on both in-bound and out-bound Global Mobility Programmes at Taylor’s which enriches their learning beyond the comfort of their institutions and home countries. Hence the focus of this issue is

on Global Mobility as a means to achieve a more wholesome learning outcome of one’s education. As increased global collaboration and partnerships are the ways forward, students stand to benefit tremendously by gaining experience in international relations and understanding, along with multicultural exposure and long-term interaction with foreign counterparts. For visiting students, their advisors and hosts, it is a mutually-benefiting opportunity to obtain insights into best practices, policies, strengths, opportunities and the uniqueness of local and foreign systems, and to know deeper why things are the way they are in different countries. In this issue you will also find that we have held many activities which promote greater student development, and industry ties. Students got the chance to learn from experts in areas such as advertising, entrepreneurship, innovation, social responsibility, photography and personal happiness. Further steps have also been taken in reaching out to the broader campus community, among which include showing our appreciation to academics during Teachers Day celebrations, and the setting up of a full pro-tem committee to serve our postgraduate students’ needs. In the sporting scene we continue to make an impact in various leagues and tournaments. We are particularly proud of our students’ achievements and continued dominance in sports such as Dodgeball, Ping Pong and Netball. We are hopeful that we can continue our streak in these sports, and at the same time establish Taylor’s name in other sports as well. There is always something new happening on campus that caters to every student fancy and need. Examples of which includes pioneering efforts in our first Debate Team, starting up our own Cultural Performing Arts Team, and SPARTFEST!, the first arts festival that was held throughout the Lakeside Campus. We hope that these activities provide greater inspiration for you to be involved and contribute towards your overall student experience at Taylor’s. I conclude this issue’s letter along the sayings of St. Augustine by encouraging you to write your book of life-long learning with Student Experience. University of Amsterdam & Lokaalmondiaal

Taylor’s goes Global!The School of Communication (SOC) completed two

very different Student Mobility programmes in June. The first programme was a two-week journalistic

exchange to Amsterdam in which nine Communication students respectively were tasked to gather information for four journalistic projects. As part of the “Beyond Your World” tri-partner collaboration between SOC, the University of Amsterdam and Lokaalmondiaal, the programme included a series of lectures to introduce Taylor’s University students to the media landscape and issues with social integration within the Netherlands. The students also visited Metropolis and FreePress Unlimited to better understand various works which Dutch organisations are continuously doing in different parts of the world. On the second weekend of their trip, the students took a boat ride which sailed to Volendam, as some of them visited The Hague.

The second programme was an SOC Public Relations course integrated activity for twenty visiting Deakin University students. Students from both Taylor’s and Deakin first met on 27th June to brainstorm ideas for PR campaigns. As a group, they visited Pasar Seni to survey the location for their target campaign as well as to finalize their campaign materials for a presentation on the following day.

The most rewarding outcome of both programmes are the encounters and exchanges between students and their newfound foreign friends.

Students from the University of Sheffield and the University of the West of England (UWE Bristol) arrived at Malaysian shores in June to learn about the legal system in Malaysia. Hosted

by Taylor’s Law School, the three-week programme consisted of lectures, seminars, field trips and internships at reputable law firms. The visiting students were provided with hands-on experience of the legal framework within which the Malaysian legal profession operated.

In March, Taylor’s University received a total of 25 exchange students from six countries for the Exchange Programme

which commenced in that month. The schools receiving the exchange students had organised a Welcome Lunch Reception for them, giving the latter a chance to socialise and mingle with the respective faculty members.

Washington State UniversityEmbarks on Education Tour at Taylor’s University

Students from Washington State University arrived with Prof. Dogan Gursoy in May to embark on a one-week educational tour. The tour consisted of a series of lectures delivered by Taylor’s professors, visits to an integrated resort and a five-star hotel within the city, and a city tour. One of the fourteen students, Nicholas Mead, found the entire experience very rewarding and

unique, having had the opportunity to learn from Taylor’s teaching staff and to cultivate relationships with some of our students.

N.B. This was the second time Taylor’s University had received delegates from Washington State University.

The Homestay Programme at Kampung Sentosa provided visiting students the opportunity to experience living with Malaysian families and helped enhance their understanding

of the local culture and customs. During the last weekend of June, 66 students hailing from eleven different countries had the chance to experience this unique programme. AIESEC intern Laura Pfannenschmidt from Germany shares her encounter... “I came to Malaysia to learn more about the culture. The homestay in Malacca was a big helpful effort in providing that learning. I could have read about the national food and dance, but it would never have been the same experience as being with a local family and getting such a warm welcome in their house.”

Global Ambassador Programme -Connecting with the World

Victor Lukas first began his journey as a Global Ambassador in 2011. Along the way he met people from different cultures, ethnic backgrounds, nationalities,

and he even picked up new languages. His participation in the Global Ambassador Programme has increased his international network tremendously. When he travelled to Hong Kong in January 2013, he reconnected with the students of Hong Kong Institute of Education whom he met during their service learning programme at Taylor’s the previous year. The Hong Kong students displayed a level of hospitality and generosity that Victor would never forget. “These are the things that you could never experience by just being in the classroom and attending lectures,” Victor quips.

In the month of May, nineteen students from the Bachelor of International Tourism Management Programme flew to Saigon (Ho Chi Minh) on a mission to explore Saigon’s most intimate secrets and treasures. Accompanied by their lecturer Ms. Chris Ong, they covered numerous tourist attraction sites. Among the places visited include the Reunification Palace, Saigon Notre Dame Basilica, War Remnants Museum, Saigon Central Post Office, Ben Thanh Market, Dong Khoi Street, Handicraft Villages, the Mekong Delta, Ut Trinh Homestay, Duc Thang University, Cù Chi Tunnels, The Child Care Centres-Agent Orange, Go Vap Orphanage, and the Cai Be Floating Market.

Highlights - Global Mobility

Taylor’s University received fifteen Bangkok University students in June, who were accompanied by their advisor Assoc. Prof. Dr. Patty Phuangphet Tonawanik to embark on a three-week English Language Course. Notwithstanding some similarities between Malaysian and Thai culture, the Bangkok University students found it refreshing to observe the way Malaysians live and learn. Taylor’s University students who served as ambassadors helped make the Thai students’ experience even more memorable for them.

Course from previous participants, yet they could not expect what was to follow. They found the lecturers to be caring and engaging in their teaching methods, and instantly struck up friendships with Taylor’s students who are always helpful and provided assistance where and whenever needed.

N.B. This was the third batch of students that Hansung University sent for the four-week English Language Course.

The Career Services team with the Programme Director of Quantity Surveying paid a visit to five

interns in Brunei to conduct academic evaluations as well as to look into their well-being. The students consist of three Malaysians, a Bruneian PR and a Bruneian national, who were interning in three different companies. While the students were enjoying their internship training, their employers gave positive feedback on the students’ performance. Impressed with the calibre of Taylor’s students, one of the employers already intends to hire another two local Taylor’s students for their next batch of interns.

Ad Unplugged 2013 was jointly organised by Career Services Centre, Association of Accredited Advertising Agents (4A’s) Malaysia and The Advertising Academy. Held on 24th April, student participants ranging

across various disciplines from Taylor’s School of Communication, The Design School and Taylor’s Business School caught a glimpse of the working world of the creative industry.

It was a platform where students gained exposure to the importance of strategic, creative and critical thinking skills in advertising. At the start of the event, students watched a selection of award-winning commercials considered to be the “Best of Advertising.” During the event, participants were given a brief, brainstormed and worked under the guidance of five of Malaysia’s Top Executive Creative Directors, all of whom are leaders in the industry, to build their campaign strategy and come up with ideas. Through this process, participants received a small yet potent dose of how the creative process works.

Student finalists whose pitch had impressed the judges had their ideas uploaded onto the 4A’s Facebook Page, where student audiences and the advertising industry across Malaysia were invited to vote for the best idea. The winning idea thereafter, stands a chance to be further polished, produced and published.

Taylor’s University received for the first time six students from Caritas Institute of Higher Education. The ten-day programme was structured around lectures on

Malaysian history and culture, community service learning, company visits and participating in a homestay programme at a local Malay village.

Support University Mission

This year’s fair featured over sixty top employers with numerous exciting internship and employment opportunities. Held on 26th April, students were

provided with a golden opportunity in pursuing their career pathways with top employers. There were seventeen new exhibitors engaged for the first time, representing industries ranging from retail to FMCG, banking, insurance, business outsourcing, events, broadcasting, computing, engineering, energy and automotive. These newcomers added to an already impressive list of returning exhibitors including the Big Four professional services firms, five star hotels, major financial institutions and top multinational corporations.

Apart from the exhibition which was organised by Career Services Centre, a series of career talks were held by the likes of Shell Malaysia and Texwinca Hong Kong, to promote their campus recruitment drive and graduate training programme respectively. Also organised were interview skills workshops held by General Electric and Unilever which sought to equip students with the necessary soft skills to project themselves in a better light to top employers.

Learning Experience & Student Development

Taylor’s University Debaters who specialise in parliamentary debating style was established in

April this year. To support the debaters, Student Development Hub had put together various structural training and development programmes to prepare our inaugural team for university representation and debate tournaments. As a start, Mr. Iqbal Hafiedz, the CEO of Malaysian Institute of Debate and Public Speaking, was engaged to conduct a two-day debate workshop for the team on 13th and 14th April. Subsequently, an Inter-Team Debate Competition followed suit on 27th April which allowed the students to brush up and apply their debating skills at a competitive level. A team from University of Malaya led by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Chandran Somasundram supported the adjudication for the competition. Since then our group of twenty debaters has been training diligently weekly in various mock debate practices. Guided by their advisor, Mr. Ronson, the debaters made their first attempt at external competition from 7th to 9th June in UiTM, Shah Alam. Let’s wish them the best in their preparations and more success as they strive to capture their first debate trophy for Taylor’s University!

Aspiring Debaters Ready to Shine!

The inaugural Youth to Business Forum was held on 1st June at Taylor’s University to connect young leaders and businesses to generate new, actionable and sustainable ideas and thoughts

for the future. Hence the theme of the event, “Empowering Leaders of Tomorrow.” Driven by the university’s AIESEC club, the forum covered three main topics of discussion – Corporate Responsibility, Innovation and Entrepreneurship. These topics were guided by representatives

from various well-known corporations such as YTL Communications, Groupon, Allianz,

Deloitte, ACCA, Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre and Taylor’s Education Group. This exclusive event also provided delegates an opportunity to interact directly with key corporations through “closed-door partnership” workshops.

Delegates were privileged to have numerous impactful speakers deliver inspiring sessions throughout the event. Among the highlights include the keynote which was given by Mr. Wing K. Lee, CEO of YTL Communications on the topic of Innovation; and an

entrepreneurship workshop held by Dato’ Loy Teik Ngan, Group CEO of Taylor’s Education Group, who shared his endearing entrepreneurship journey. Another highlight included a rapid fire session on “Youth Reacting to their Ecosystem in Building and Nurturing Leadership.” This session provided engaging dialogue between students and panellists Ms. Anisha Sasheendran, Chief Talent Officer of Groupon Malaysia; Mr. Jacob Yeoh, Deputy-CEO of YTL Communications; and Mr. Alex Lee, Human Resources Director of Deloitte KassimChan.

Power-Packed Weekend for Students

Experts’ Lens

“It’s a great way to inspire and make students think about what they can contribute and how they can grow”, quoted a student who participated in the Student Development Empowerment Series. Organised by Student Development Hub, the Empowerment Series was held from 20th to 21st April, and was attended by 200 students who showed interest in listening to industry experts talk about leadership and community services. Student participants had rated the series “99% Excellent and Good”, with 96% finding it very beneficial.

Mr. Andrew Lau, Campus Head from Leaderonomics shared about Personality Plus while Mr. Jason Lo, CEO of Tune Talk inspired students with his life story on Personal Leadership.

The annual EOS Young Photographer’s Award received a riveting launch with an exclusive photography workshop for Taylor’s University

students, featuring National Geographic Channel Young Photographers Joe Riis and Gabby Salazar. The event, organised by conjunction with the prestigious award’s launch was sponsored by Canon and National Geographic Channel. Only twenty lucky students were privileged to be guided by the Nat Geo experts in practical photography sessions at the Lakeside Campus as well as through FRIM. In summary, the students’ learning experience was nothing short of valuable as budding photographers.

Students were given the opportunity to gain knowledge of the power of teamwork and motivation from Asia’s Most Experienced ACTION Coach, Mr. Jeevan N. Sahadevan. One of the most reputable speakers, Mr. Pradeep Nair, our Deputy-Vice-Chancellor shared on his success traits in leadership. On the community front, Dr. Hartini Zainudin, Founder of Yayasan Chow Kit and current CEO of Yayasan Siti Sapura Husin, and Mr. Ang Peng Hoe, Partner Liaison from Asian Youth Ambassadors imparted their experience in being involved in community works with real life stories and needs.

A pro-tem committee has been formed in March 2013, and under the leadership of

this council, they have successfully resolved a total of seven High Priority and six Medium Priority issues involving 22 tasks for the postgraduate student communities in Taylor’s. Some of the issues that have been resolved include academic and non-academic matters such as F&B for evening and weekend classes, free car park access at Block G after 5.30pm, e-tutorial for postgraduate students on the usage of Taylor’s online library system, better support on ICT and system requirements, a dedicated resource centre for postgraduate students and expert workshops. Happiness Now!“Happiness does not happen by accident, it’s a daily decision”, says Andrew Matthews, an international speaker and best-selling author of “Happiness Now”, “Follow Your Heart”, “Being Happy!”, “Making Friends”, and “Being a Happy Teenager”, which are published in 42 different languages and with over seven million copies sold. Over one million people have attended Andrew’s seminars and keynote speeches across Australia, Asia and North America.

On 5th June, Student Development Hub organised Andrew’s first talk at Taylor’s University to the delight of 200 over Taylorians. With Andrew’s lightning fast drawing skills, he illustrated valuable principles on happiness through his impromptu artwork and powerful quotes. The audience responded well with the session, giving an “overall rating of 97% excellent and good” for the experience gained, and rated Andrew as a “100% excellent and good speaker!”

In celebration of all educators, lecturers, mentors, coaches and teachers, Student Development Hub together with its Orientation Leaders joined hands in bringing “Teacheer’s Day”

to these highly regarded people at Taylor’s University.

Messages of appreciation and goodwill were collected from students in the form of dedications to their lecturers and tutors on Teacher’s Day. At the end of the two-week collection period, the Orientation Leaders worked hard, under the guidance of Ms. Faith Yeo their advisor, to put together specially-handmade “Teacheer’s Day” packs, some of which included the individual dedications. These packs were distributed to Taylor’s University teaching staff on 16th May.

For all the Orientation Leaders’ labour of love (and late night packing), it was a worthwhile endeavour to see smiles lighting up lecturers’ / tutors’ faces when they received the packs! Each academician received sweet surprises in the form of encouraging quote badges and teabags – as a show of appreciation which certainly made their day. Have a cuppa and cheers to our wonderful teachers!

SPARTFEST! - Celebrating the Arts BIG at Taylor’s University

SPARTFEST! ‘13 is an arts festival organised by the Society of Performing Arts (SPART) of

Taylor’s University. Held from 12th to 14th June, it is the first of its kind to be held with a variety of exhibits and shows sprawled across the Lakeside Campus grounds. The event provided students not just from within the society but from schools such as The Design School a platform to promote bold, artistic expressionism among youths. The result is a festival which fuses Arts and Sciences, Communal Arts, Contemporary, Classical, Fine, Visual, Literary and Performing Arts together on a grand stage for all to witness.

Led by American Degree Transfer Programme students David Chia Jun Weng and Ng Hui Xin who are passionate in all things arts, the team successfully transformed the entire Lakeside Campus into an art gallery with eye-catching and mind stimulating sculptures, paintings, structures and displays. Themed “Musical Timeline”, the combined ensemble performed classical and movie tracks before 300 guests at the Civic Centre Auditorium in Petaling Jaya. One of the highlights of the night was a solo performance by Jeff Gooi Liang Jun from the School of Architecture who sang an inspirational piece, “You Raise Me Up.”

bands, live theatre production, orchestras, musical ensembles, choir performances, exhibitions, slam poetry, contemporary dance shows and percussionist performance among a packed programme. Rumour has it that SPARTFEST! ‘14 is already in the pipeline!

Overall the awe-inspiring outcome of the festival achieved was indeed what SPART had set out to do as an initiative to allow aspiring artists to explore the arts through their imaginations. Congratulations on a job well done, and we are looking forward to more of the same next year!

Amazing Race

As the popular saying goes, “all work and no play make Jack a dull boy!” Yes, the international students at Taylor’s University certainly abide by this rule. On April

26th, the International Student Council and its international clubs organised an Azonto night entitled “Danza Fiesta.” The night was full of colour, fun and laughter. However this enjoyable night was a culmination of a challenging yet very interesting and educational experience in terms of organizing and putting the whole event together. All in all, the event blended fun and learning through team work, commitment and time management.

At a glance the night’s programme included multinational food and performances by various groups including students from Mauritius, Indonesia, China, Africa-Arab combined and Tradi-C. Overall the nightwas a success, thanks to the performers, emcees and the crowd turnout who joined in the dances as well. For many of the international students, it was definitely a night to remember!

On 9th May, Komando ‘45 organised their annual gathering to welcome new Indonesian students to Taylor’s University as well as to the Indonesian

society. This event was attended by over 100 students. The event was a mingling opportunity for current and new Indonesian students to acquaint with one and another. Ice breakers were held along with a birthday celebration for the month of May babies as part of the bonding activities for the Indonesian student community.

Komando ‘45 organised an Amazing Race which was held on 15th June for current and former board members as a fun and formative activity. The

event kicked-off at the Lakeside Campus in the morning, and led them to venture out to various locations within Kuala Lumpur and around Klang Valley which they had to identify. There were 45 students comprising current and past Komando ‘45 Board of Directors (BOD) who took part in this reality-TV inspired race to the finish. Regardless of which team finished first or last, the event helped in assisting the new BOD to build networks, and enhance their communication and leadership skills. And definitely not least of all, the outing facilitated the members working together as teammates.

Ms. Norsafizar binti Mohd. Noor (Ms. Sophie) inspired me to be someone who stands out. On the first day of her class, she said that “Everyone is ‘same’ enough. Why do you want to be the ‘same’ as everyone else? Strive to become special.” I’ve learnt how to do presentations well and to become a good-natured woman. I’ve also learnt how to get along with others, especially those from a different culture and nationality from myself. If I had not joined this camp (four-week English Language Course), I would not have grown as I have now.

Taylor’s University emerged champions in the following tournaments: Nottingham Open Dodgeball Tournament (Mixed Category); Nilai University Open (Mixed Category);

Hari Belia Kejohanan Dodgeball (Female Category); and the National Dodgeball League 2013 (Female Category Champion, Male Category 1st Runner-up).

This event was organised by Taylor’s University on 13th and 14th April at the National Sports Complex in Bukit Jalil. A total of forty male and female players took part. Taylor’s

University came in 1st, 2nd and 4th in the Men’s Category, thanks to Ng Jo Wen, Mohd. Asri and Marcus Yuen while Eunice Tan was runner up in the Female Category.

Taylor’s University finished 2nd in the IPT League which comprised of Public and Private Universities from the Central Zone. Out of a total of twelve teams that took part, Taylor’s have qualified into the

National IPT Netball League.

Sports Awards Day for 2012 was held on 19th April. Best Sportsman was awarded to David Hoh (Swimming) while

Best Sportswoman went to Sabrina Chong (Badminton). Dodgeball Club was named the Best Club while Best Sports Club President went to Wong Shu Yi (Volleyball). A total of 150 students attended the awards ceremony.

Ms. Angela Pok, an active participant and contributor to the student mobility and exchange programmes international scene, attended the University Mobility

in Asia and the Pacific (UMAP) Committee and Board Meeting which was held in Tokyo this April. This biannual meeting brings together government and non-government representatives of the higher education sector to promote better partnerships in, and oversee, UMAP Exchange and Mobility Programmes among its associated members.

On 24th June, the Student Development Hub team (Ms. Jayvien Lau, Mr. Albert Ling and Mr. Ahmad Khairee) visited Prof. Madya Dr. Mohd Nasir Hashim, Cultural Centre Director of University Malaya to seek his advice

and experience on setting up a cultural arts performers team and uncovered the criticial success factors for this team. The Cultural Centre in University Malaya was established since 1974, while Dr. Nasir has more than twenty years of experience in cultural arts performances under his belt.

The Global Internship Conference 2013 (GIC) is an international forum for dialogue with the purpose of advancing the knowledge of internships, academic

work placement and experiential education, and facilitating communication and collaboration between individuals and parties who are involved in the field of internships and experiential learning.

Now into its seventh year, GIC was held in Singapore from 11th to 13th June. Organised by the Academic Internship Council and Michigan State University, the local host partner was the National University of Singapore. With over 200 international delegates from more than twenty different countries in attendance, Taylor’s University was represented by Ms. Angela Pok, Vice-President of Student Experience, Ms. Sandy Tan, Head of Career Services and Global Mobility, and Career Services Managers – Mr. Izwal Mazlan, Ms. Ooi Yek Yen and Ms. Susan Yap.

With the theme “North, South, East & West: Internships at a Crossroad”, the 2013 conference brought together practitioners, researchers and presenters to discuss challenges, creating solutions and debating wide-ranging issues related to best practices. Overall the aim was finding ways to enhance the internship experience for university and college students. Throughout the three-day conference, 33 conference proceedings and research papers were presented. In between sessions, there were opportunities for networking amongst the delegates and internship providers. The conference also included a day of internship site visits around Singapore where delegates get to see interns in action.

It is truly amazing to see a world that exists out there, where internship is the centre of its universe.

S tudent Experience bids farewell to Philip Gan, the previous Editor-in-Chief of the Student Experience newsletter. He has moved on to

Taylor’s School of Communication as Lecturer, much to the benefit of students and staff in the school. Stepping into his place is Adrian Chong, who was previously Communication Manager at Taylor’s American Degree Transfer Programme. With his past experience as Editor-in-Chief of the programme’s e-newsletter, he now makes his debut in heading the Student Experience newsletter’s content selection, compilation and editorial duties.

From 2nd to 5th April, Mr. Murali Paramasivam and Mr. Syful Irwady Ahmad of the Sports and Recreation Centre participated in a football referee coaching development

course held at Garden International School. Both participants completed the course successfully and it was a good opportunity for them to further enhance their knowledge of the sport from a referee’s point of view. Participants were awarded recognition in the form of certificates of participation upon completion of the course.
