Just as you are about to sit down and enjoy a quiet evening meal with the wife, husband and or the family around you, the phone goes and you answer it. And guess what - it is someone trying to sell you something like, home insurance, double glazing, home improvements, life insurance or suggesting that you can make a claim on your car insurance. So how do you react to these nuisance calls? Before going out on the streets to ask some jolly souls I thought about this and asked myself if it got up my nose that much? Not that much, in fact, I sometimes quite enjoy the experience for some sad reason. My usual reaction is to give them incorrect information, particularly when they ask me my age, after going through the age gaps to between 80 and 85, I tell them that I am in fact 97 this year and give them a birthday date which is always incorrect. When they ask what my wife does as a job I always suggest that I am happily married to a man a lot younger than I am. Likewise when they ask about our income, I always say over £150,000 per annum, plus bonus payments, which I cannot remember at the moment. By this stage they are polite enough to not suggest that my answers are not wholly true. Once, when asked if I would like to change my mobile phone, I asked them if that was one without a cord attached and when they said yes, I said : “well that is what I’m presently talking to you on”. After at least another five minutes while they explain to me what a mobile phone is, I assure them that I would never want one of those as I never go out of the house, and they seem to have forgotten that I am 97 this year. Sad as I may be I quite enjoy misleading these good folk, simply doing their job for some large pushy company. Can Mundesley follow suit or even possibly Cromer or Aylsham? Can I draw readers attention to the article on Page 8. I hope that any and every community could at least consider this idea of growing more vegetables and fruit in the empty plots, that I am sure already exist, for our community to take control of and develop for the benefit of the many instead of possibly the few.At this early stage, I have written to our Parish Clerk in Mundesley and have asked for this idea to be put on the agenda for discussion at least in the near future. It is with great sadness that I learnt that Don Venvell had passed away, as he and his wife Clyte have done so much for their community in which they live.I recall that Don and Clyte were instrumental in helping to get the Mundesley Visitors Centre up and running so smoothly.See Page 10. I must say how surprised I was by the reaction to cold calling that our local people had. (See Front Page& Page 6) I was very aware these telephone cold calls upset people but I was surprised by the extent of how much they upset people.I have always been reasonably polite when they phone me, but I have never purchased anything from them. And I never will.

When do you start thinking about Christmas and New Year?So far I have already seen some of the festive decorations already out as well as pre-Christmas offers on display around the place. Mainly in Norwich as yet.So should we, in early October, be already thinking about Christmas and the whole festive coming and going? The answer is probably Yes, as you cannot get away from it all.

From The Editor

Dear Mr Keddell,I would like to say how lovely it is to have the Crab Tales again. It is like seeing an old friend.Coming to Mundesley, without picking up my Crab Line was not the same and I also read it online when at home.Recently I was interested to read the letter from Nigel Holmes RE growing beans. I was sceptical at first about the wild flowers, but they have made a pretty display in the village.Having visited the town of Todmorden, on the Lancashire /Yorkshire border, my mind was also running along the lines of growing herbs and vegetables. At Todmorden the community has utilised every available piece of spare ground to grow foodstuffs. For instance, alight from the train and pick your vegetables for dinner at the station. The Police Station forecourt has raised beds with celery and beetroot etc.

Dear Editor,The Daily Mail has recently printed stories about my Dad. The headlines called him “The Man Who Hated Britain.” There was a time when politicians stayed silent if this kind of thing happened, in the hope that it wouldn’t happen again. I will not do that. This isn’t about me and my family – this is about doing what’s right. Speak up for decency in British politics, and add your name to mine.It is perfectly legitimate for the press to talk about my father’s politics but when they say he hated Britain, I was not willing to put up with that.My father loved Britain. After he arrived in Britain as a refugee from Nazi Germany, he joined the Royal Navy. He did so because he was determined to be part of the fight against the Nazis and to help his family hidden in Belgium. He was fighting for Britain.Britain was a source of hope and comfort for my dad, not hatred. He loved Britain for the security it offered his family and the gentle decency of our nation. The simple truth is something has really gone wrong when a newspaper attacks the family of a politician - any politician - in this way.I won’t stay silent when it happens – that’s why I have written a reply in today’s Mail. I hope you take a moment to read it, and then say you won’t stay silent either. We can be better than this.Thank you,Ed Miliband

Dear Philip,It is with great sadness I discovered that All Things Cake is soon to close. Another marvellous individual and unique shop forced to close because of the greed of others. It joins the Norfolk House Company in the ranks of something that was ‘GOOD’ for Cromer. No doubt another empty shop will haunt us for months - or some other ‘normal’ sighting all too common...... ...estate agent or charity shop. May I wish Mandy & Nick well in their future and thank them for the time they tried so hard for.Sandi Carpenter

Dear Philip, I am writing to express huge thanks to all those who helped to make our flower festival at Gimingham so successful. The flower arrangements were really beautiful and the cakes and savouries were delicious. Our final total raised, for the Church, was £837.58, so a big thank you to you all. Yours sincerely, Gill Burford.

Dear PhilipMay we through the Crab Tales, please say an enormous thank you to all those who supported the Macmillan Coffee Morning at Thorpe Market Church. An amazing £628.56 was raised. A very big thank you to all who donated, helped and spent.

Mandy Hayward and Hazel Patrickson

Dear Philip,The Gimingham Village Hall Committee would like to thank everyone who generously donated, supported and attended their fund raising coffee morning on 28th September for MacMillan.People came and met friends and neighbours and chatted over refreshments and delicious home made cakes. There was also a raffle, book stall and sweepstake which together raised a total of £324.41.Alongside the already highly successful bingo charity nights, we look forward to organising a programme of fund raising events, both for charity and the village hall,Thanks once again,Colin Hart (Treasurer)

Along the canal there are fruit trees and herbs. We were given a tour and a talk when visited Todmorden recently. Apparently it has pulled the commnuity together and reduced petty crime. So perhaps, next year, I can look forward to picking lettuce, tomatoes, apples, plums etc and the following year locally made jams and chutneys, from what is grown locally in Mundesley, at the Tourist Information Centre.Sorry about the handwritten letter, but no technology at my chalet. Time to go home.Yours sincerely,Margaret Meadows MundesleyResponse from Editor:Thank you very much for your interesting letter Mrs Meadows, I draw your attention to the article on Page 8.

Dear Philip, Firstly, a hearty congratulations on the success of the Crab Tales. It certainly has taken off and I am sure will continue to grow further.I would like to mention the problems we are experiencing at the moment as a growing business ourselves in the hope that we are not alone in our endeavours. Boyer’s Body Centre (as in vehicle bodies!) started out as a fledgling business three years ago as a one man show so to speak. Since then, just over a year ago, we took on additional premises on the same site at Home Farm Enterprise Zone to accommodate Commercial vehicles and PSV’s.

I initially managed to staff these 2 businesses with relatively little trouble and continued to conduct our business and cement a varied and loyal client base, which we continue to enjoy. Recently, I have had the opportunity – due to the ever growing business activities – to acquire a 3rd workshop premises (at the same site) and have had difficulty procuring new staff to optimise the work capacity. We have advertised at the Job Centre, in local media (including press & radio) at great expense but have little success in filling these positions.I find it rather strange that with the current job and economic climate being what it is, that thisis the case. Are there any other local businesses that are experiencing the same frustrations? It would be interesting to know.I have other expansion plans in the pipeline for the future including contractual works and would ideally love to employ from and support the local community.Anybody have any further comments out there?Best regards.Matthew Boyer : 01263 515 545

Dear Editor,I feel the need to respond to the correspondence in your previous edition regarding the driving school cars ‘cruising’ down the High Street during the Cromer Carnival parade. Not wishing to be unkind, ‘rude’ or ‘potentially harmful to local businesses’ (or individuals) but, forgive me, I have to start by asking, is this real? It’s just that I find it hard to a) come to terms with the signatory ‘Chris Posthumus’ and b) some business sponsoring a hole.... No disrespect intended but I do have a rather obtuse sense of humour and this letter triggered it.

Picture me now regaining composure, looking embarrassed and giving a nervous cough. So now to the point at issue; I feel sad that whilst many organisations AND businesses went to great pains, time and effort in designing and building most imaginative and ingenious floats for the Cromer Carnival Parade, there seem to be those amongst us who believe that coughing up 35 quid(is that the going rate?) to slot a couple of cars into the ensemble is morally acceptable?Where would this all end if all and sundry were to adopt this commercial short-cut to get exposure and an ‘unfair’ share of the action? I personally feel the local commercial radio station/s is/are pushing the bounds in this regard as well and this ‘easy cop-out’ is hardly entering into the spirit of the event. To quote the Crab Tales Editor “...I do feel they should make their floats look fun and Jolly”. I’ll take it a stage further by suggesting they ‘make some real effort like the majority of the entrants’ before the parade eventually becomes a mere, slowly moving traffic jam of private vehicles.Perhaps the organisers will take this on board and insist only on proper decorated floats from now onwards?Yours, Micky P of Trimingham-on-Sea

Susan Peters from Trunch, while doing her duty at the Mundesley Visitors Centre.

Please note the MVC closed that evening for the season.

These calls make me very angry as it seems they are always in the evening at meal times. Others with more modern phones can see who is calling to avoid taking the calls but our phone is pretty old.We have never bought anything ever over the phone and never will. We have also complained to BT and they say they can do nothing if the call is made from outside the UK.One day we will probably get a modern phone so we can see who is calling before answering our phone.

Angela Smith from Mundesley had a quite different attitude to these phone calls:I let them talk to me, then politely tell them that I will not be taking their services or buying anything off them. I never simple hang up on them but let them speak.Certainly, Angela’s approach to this situation that we all find ourselves in, is possibly the best way to deal with these calls. For advice on how to stop these calls go online:tackling-nuisance-calls-and-messages/Quick tips to stop nuisance callsTo stop unwanted sales & marketing calls, register your phone number – either landline or mobile – with the Telephone Preference Service. It’s free and takes 28 days for a ban to come into effect.Talk to your provider about their services to block unwanted calls. For example, BT offers a number of services to help stop unwanted calls, including ‘Privacy at Home’, ‘Choose to Refuse’ and ‘Anonymous Call Rejection’. Other providers offer similar services. You can rest assured that you will not be getting any unwanted calls from us. PK

Continued From Front Pagetheir late lunch of fish and chips outside Mary Janes in Cromer. They said: PPI is one company that seem to phone us both pretty often asking if we are in debt. Which we are not, thank goodness. We just hang up straight away, thankfully we seem to be getting less of these God forsaken calls these days. In fact we have not had many recently at all.

Ric Bannington who works with Icarus Hinesin Cromer. Most of my calls are through the mobile and I just hang up straight away. Problem solved.

Norma Green & Paul Bryant from Sheffield, who were staying at the Hotel De Paris. Before answering your questions can we both say how much we enjoy staying here. As for these calls, we often get ones from PPI re payments as well as ones from gas and electricity suppliers and also from computer suppliers. We are often asked if we have problems getting in and out of the bath, trying to sell us bathing equipment, all very boring to handle so we just hang up on them as soon as possible. It is all so rude simply phoning you out of the blue. Neither of us like to put up with it at all.No we would never buy over the phone any form of service. The next people I asked in Cromer were (above right) L-R: Judy Muskett, Katie Day, Stephen Miller and Katie’s son Jamie from Norwich. We do not like this happening at all, in fact we think it should be against the law as alot of the data they get is shared out to other companies around the UK.

They seem to be making these calls across the country people like PPI, home improvement companies, Talk Talk and all the utility companies are all at it.They often ask if you have had an accident recently to make a claim against whoevercaused your accident. It really should be against the law.

Andy Walker from the Mundesley Fish & Chip Shop. I seem to get these calls everyday and they really are a bore to put up with especially when you are very busy. I just put the phone down on them, particularly when we are busy. I understand that you can stop this happening somehow.

Mike Wall from Mundesley awaiting his fish and chips. We often get them, sometimes up to more than 20 times a day. I normally just hang up straight away on the them. I will often pick up the phone and once I know it is one of those types of calls will hang up on them without saying anything to them.I do hate the calls that come in at around 10pm or sometimes even later .

Can Mundesley Follow Suit? The answer must surely be YES.Before going on, I must draw readers attention to the letter on Page Three that we received from Margaret Meadows, about her visit to Todmorden, a place we had never heard of. On reading Margaret’s letter, we went on to the net to give readers some examples from their extensive Website which covers all of the activities undertaken by this caring and delightful community:Incredible Edible TodmordenThe word about Incredible Edible Todmorden has spread like wild strawberries and people are exchanging seeds, helping planting, involved in every school & church, doing it for themselves.News of our campaign has spread far and wide with volunteers giving talks about our work and other initiatives which include lots of people borrowing our ideas. All sorts of groups have adopted the Incredible Edible name, from near-neighbours in Rossendale to fellow Yorkshire folk like Wakefield and to people from all over the world who come to visit and share ideas. We work in partnership with other long-standing local groups like Todmorden in Bloom, Todmorden Pride and many local businesses to promote and improve Todmorden.Calderdale Council have adopted polices borough-wide to remove obstacles stopping the use of community land for growing, and to give guidance to groups and public bodies about how it can be done.Land Share And Using Public LandWe have signed our first community growing licence with Calderdale Council.Nick Green wrote : ‘It signals a quantum shift inthe institutional mind set. Where previously the intention was to be authoritarian and control freakish, or to abdicate responsibility totally by selling off property, this is a middle way, it signals trust.’

We may sometimes be stroppy but we have also worked to earn that trust. The licence is an example of how our campaigning action has tried to bring about change. Sometimes we’ve just gone ahead and grown on vacant plots, but we’re always aiming to change minds so that public bodies - and the public, look differently at local land, and at the idea of local food. Virtually all our work with Growing bodies in ‘What we do’ now has agreement – with the Health Centre (owned by Assura), Network Rail, the fire service, Ferney Lee old people’s home, schools & anyone else who’ll have us!We also support the idea of land share, of people offering to use and to make available for use, spare bits of private land. Check out the landshare national website for details of how to register, and what’s available locally. We are working too with local farmers and welcome their views and help. The more that local land can be used for local food – the happier we’ll be!Growing Round TownVolunteers have been growing vegetables around Todmorden for three years now, and herbs for longer. Mostly we’ve had permission; sometimes, well, you just have to go ahead and do it. Why Not Go Ahead Yourself? In our first year the beds outside Todmorden College yielded leeks that were cooked by High Fearnley-Whittingstall when he came for our Harvest Festival. Nowadays the college actually knows thatwe are growing them and who can have planted the vegtables at the Abraham Ormerod Centre? Or those cherry trees in Lidl’s car park? Currently volunteers are focusing on our land at Walsden – you can see it from the train and from the canal – where we are creating a nursery for seeds, plants, veg – & a resource for learning and job-training.

Community Herb GardensThe IET’s herb garden on the Burnley Road opposite the park entrance has been a great success. Yes, all our herbs are legal and excellent for zapping up your cooking. It’s the fifth year for this and the herb garden at Todmorden Station, originally courtesy of Todmorden in Bloom. And if you’re a commuter, waiting for a train why not yank out some of those naughty weeds while you wait, then reward yourself with a deliciously smelling sprig or two!

What’s more, IET have gone on to create an apothecary’s garden next to the car park of the new Health Centre. Yes, herbs can aid good health as well as tasting yummy. The listings and details of what is going on with these gardens in Todmorden is endless, so I would strongly suggest readers to visit:www.incredible-edible-todmorden.co.ukIt is really is an impressive website that does explain how it has all worked out so well for this particular location and community. The photographs Above have been taken from their website and very much encourage me to get involved in doing something like this for the Mundesley village.Hopefully it is now a case of ‘Watch This Space’. A Gentleman Who Will Be Sadly Missed By ManyDon Venvell, who died at 84, in Knapton was someone who was respected and admired by all who had the opportunity to meet him.

I first met Don some years ago, when he andhis wife Clyte, stepped in to help set up the Mundesley Visitors Centre. This was when the Tourist Information Centre was closed by the local authority. Don took on the role of being the Treasurer with Clyte as Secretary, which they both continued to do for many years, before poor health, sadly, took hold of them both.Don had always led a very busy life, devoting so much time to everything that he took on,

as the Chairman of NNDC in 1998 and 1999,and Clerk to both Knapton and Paston Parish Councils as well as being an active member of the local Liberal Democratic Party. After winning a scholarship to the ManchesterGrammar School, aged only 10, he went on to gain a 1st class degree in English and German at Durham University. From University he went on to teaching English and became head of his department in a number of schools before moving into senior education in Shropshire and then in London, where he also served on a number of national education committees. Alongside being a Governor at Paston College, and at Antingham & Southrepps Primary School, he was treasurer of the Knapton Millennium Committee which worked to provide the village with a garden and wildlife area on the Milliennim Green. With his love of music, Don chaired the Cromer Music Evening events at Templewood as well as being the Knapton Church Organist.I have many fond memories of Don working as the Treasurer of the Mundesley Visitors Centre and of attending his 80th Birthday Party which was held in Mundesley Parish Hall. One could not but admire Don’s willingness to get involved and to help others, right up until very recently before his illness took over.He is survived by his widow Clyte, three children from his 1st marriage and histhree grandchildren.

The funeral will be held in Knapton Church on Tuesday October 15th at 2.30pm and will befollowed by his burial in the churchyard.

I would like to thank very much Paul Damen for supplying this photograph which he took at Don’s 80th Birthday.

Alfresco Dining in MundesleyMundesley’s Village Cafe, having opened in February this year, is now offering outdoor dining in their back garden behind the Cafe in Station Road.Derek and Liz Bowler have put a great deal of time and energy into this attractive cafe, in the centre of Mundesley, with good service, along with a friendly approach towards their growing number of visitors every day.Despite it being a windy day when I popped in for a coffee, the back yard was very shelteredand in fact as warm as the service provided by (L-R Below) Natalie Kenyon, who began to work for Derek in July this year, Derek and (on right) Danni Cooper, who as been with them since Day One, back in February. It really is a case of providing good, honest and friendly service and that is what Derekhas achieved with this delightful place.

Fred can also be seen regularly walking sections of the Coastal Path to help with distance walking.Fred, 48 says: “I am looking forward to the trek, but I will admit that it is a daunting thought spending time with people I don’t know, as I am a quiet and reserved person”.Fred has so far raised over £500 towards his target of £1000 and he will be funding the whole trip himself, so all the money raised will go to Epilepsy Research UK.To donate to Fred’s Everest Challenge go to: www.virginmoneygiving.com or call in at: Fighting Fit Martial Arts & Fitness Academy. Wet Dog Takes a Dive!Phil Weston, owner of Wet Dog in Cromer, will soon be pushing himself well out of his comfort zone to help raise money for the much needed Cromer Skate Park, when he completes his first ever Skydive.Phil spent many years coaching Youth Footballand is keen to see both boys & girls of all ages and abilities follow their passions & desires and pursue their hobbies in the best surroundings with the best facilities and most of all with friends and other likeminded people.‘Let’s face it’ he says ‘we all know kids tend to get a rough deal in general these days and they can’t gather in groups, wear what they want or enjoy their favourite pastime without getting some stick from someone’. ‘This Skate Park is a must not just for the guys who want to use it, but Cromer as well – it will create a great place for people to meet, and

to practise their sport, whether it is Boarding, Scooter or BMX, but it will also create another great ‘draw’ for the town – look at the success of the Mundesley and Sheringham Parks’.Phil and wife Kay meet a lot of the guys in the shop as they look at the latest gear, and have got to know many of them well. ‘They are great kids, polite, well behaved and well-spoken, but above all show real passion for their sport’ enthused Kay.

Phil is currently looking for sponsors for his jump and although very grateful to those who have already donated, he desperately wants more to sponsor him.If you would like to help this great cause please contact Phil or Kay on: 01263 519 703 or email: [email protected] and pledge what you can – it’ll be worth it just to see the video !!

Recipe For....The Perfect Marriage1. Twice a week we go to a nice restaurant, havea little beverage, good food & companionship. She goes on Tuesdays, I go on Fridays.2. We also sleep in separate beds. Hers is in California , and mine is in Texas.3. I take my wife everywhere, but she keeps finding her way back.4. I asked my wife where she wanted to go for our anniversary. “Somewhere I haven’t been in a long time!” she said.So I suggested the kitchen.5. We always hold hands. If I let go, she shops.6. She has an electric blender, electric toaster and electric bread maker. She said “There are too many gadgets, and no place to sit down!” So I bought her an electric chair.7. My wife told me the car wasn’t running well because there was water in the carburetor.I asked where the car was. She told me, “In the lake.”8. She got a mud pack and looked great for two days. Then the mud fell off.9. She ran after the garbage truck, yelling, “Am I too late for the garbage?” The driver said, “No, jump in!”.10. Remember: Marriage is the number one cause of divorce.11. I married Miss Right. I just didn’t know her first name was ‘Always’.12. I haven’t spoken to my wife in 18 months. I don’t like to interrupt her.13. The last fight was my fault though. My wife asked, “What’s on the TV?”I said, “Dust!”.

These were the good old days when humour didn’t have to start with a four letter word. It was just clean and simple fun.

Also highly commended was the extension to St. Andrews Church, Holt, which the judges said very effectively married community and church needs with innovative and striking design. The extension has added another dimension to the church and its role within the community.

Dragon House, a new house built on the site of a previous dwelling on Letheringsett Road, Thornage, received a commendation.

The building’s large, curved, zinc roof and the mixture of traditional brick and flint materials make it a particularly striking development. The building was praised by the judges for the way it compliments and responds to its surroundings and the landscape setting.

The yard was neglected and unused but the project has restored the traditional brick & flint outbuildings and has also transformed the area by developing opportunities for popular new businesses.

The project included the complete restoration of the Grade II Listed house ‘Greenways’, which fronts on Bull Street, for holiday lettings. The Hoppers Yard development shows how heritage can be at the core of new business activity and conservation-led regeneration.

Weybourne Priory Wins Major Council Design AwardThe 2013 NNDC Graham Allen Award for building conservation & design has been won by the 11th Century Augustinian Priory at Weybourne.

The project involved the consolidation and stabilisation of the Grade I Listed ruins of Weybourne Priory, which had been deteriorating for many years and were becoming seriously eroded.

The conservation work also uncovered a number of previously unknown features, including a gothic arched stone doorway to the cloisters. A bold new contemporary monopitch garden room has been cleverly tucked away in amongst the remains of the priory, which provides a new sheltered space within the garden for the owners. The panel of judges all agreed it was worthy of the prestigious award for its high conservation values, the expert approach of the contractors and for the innovation of the project.Hoppers Yard, a new retail development and holiday let in Bull Street, Holt, was highly commended.

A Cup Of Tea One day my mother was out and my dad was in charge of me.I was maybe 2 1/2 years old. Someone had given me a little 'tea set' as a gift, and it was one of my favorite toys.Daddy was in the living room engrossed in the evening news when I brought him a little cup of 'tea', which was just water. After several cups of tea and lots of praise for such yummy tea, my mum came home.My dad made her wait in the living room to watch me bring him a cup of tea, because it was 'just the cutest thing!' Mum waited, and sure enough, here I came down the hall with a cup of tea for Daddyand she watched him drink it up.

Then she said, (as only a mother would know),

“Did it ever occur to you that the only place she can reach to get water, is the toilet?”

While Walking... ....along the sidewalk in front of his church, our minister heard the intoning of a prayer that nearly made his collar wilt. Apparently, his 5-year-old son and his playmates had found a dead robin. Feeling that proper burial should be performed, they had secured a small box and cotton wool, then dug a hole and made ready for the disposal of the deceased. The minister's son was chosen to say the appropriate prayers and with sonorous dignity intoned his version of what he thought his father always said: 'Glory be unto the Faaather, and unto the Sonnn, and into the hole he goooes.'

Thanks to Jeremy Westenra for this.

In The Top 100 Local Shops So Far

Derek Balding (pictured above) in his Spar shop in Mundesley, has for the second year running been placed in the top 100 local shops across the British Isles.Pretty Jolly Good, as far as I am concerned, considering the number of shops that put themselves forward every year. You cannot but like Derek a great deal as he is a doer and provides a great service to the good folks of the village and beyond.By around the end of November, Derek, and his jolly team, will know how they have fared in this international competition.

So how has he pulled this off for the second year running? Surely it is not simply because he stocks the Crab Tales (see below) every fortnight. I have to say that is surely a good enough reason on it’s own, if you ask me.Derek has now owned and run the Spar shop for over 10 years now and it seems to get better every time that I go into the shop.

I believe that Derek and his team deserve to win first place in this competition, and I wish them all the very best.Meanwhile it is a case of fingers crossed and good luck Derek. Philip Keddell

A Few Suggestions By Dr. Henry Harris-Hall, Mundesley Medical CentreHaving been a GP for over 30 years with nearly 27 spent in Mundesley, I would like to offer a few suggestions to help patients get the best service from their local surgery:• Surgery staff are there to provide you with the best possible health care. There is a great demand on primary care, so if you do not always get an appointment with whom you want, when you want it, please accept other choices offered by the practice staff.• Doctors’ receptionists do a very difficult job, and really do want to help patients get the best from the service. PLEASE do not shout or otherwise abuse them or any other member of staff.• Modern health care is often provided by professionals other than GPs. To improve efficiency you may be offered an appointment with, for example, a health care assistant/practice nurse/nurse practitioner. Sometimes you will be offered a telephone call with a health care professional to discuss your problem, please accept this as a genuine attempt to provide appropriate health care. • Health care professionals welcome the wider use of the internet, but if you have done some research into your problems before you attend, it would be helpful to say so initially rather than providing this at the end of the consultation.• If you have more than one problem to discuss please mention this at the start of the consultation so you do not run out of time or if you think you will need more time than a standard appointment please book a longer appointment, even if you have to wait a little longer to get one. • If it would help you, do bring a friend or relative to the consultation, but please do not ask the health care professional about their health problems. Please try to have young children looked after when you attend, or if this is difficult try and ensure they are well behaved whilst you are discussing your problems.• Home visits are occasionally made to patients who are truly housebound or very ill; please do not request one unless you really need to so do. Most patients are more fully assessed and treated at the practice premises. Please consider getting a lift, using public transport or arranging a taxi.• Whilst practices will make reasonable attempts to provide last minute health care, please request medications or holiday inoculations in good time.• Most minor conditions are self limiting and do not need attendance at a surgery. You can obtain advice online at:http://www.nhs.uk/Pages/HomePage.aspxor from your pharmacist.

• If you have a serious medical condition like: chest pain, breathing difficulties, signs of a stroke or major haemorrhage, trying to contacting the surgery first may delay the attendance of a paramedic or ambulance: dial 999 if this is more appropriate.• If you are not happy with the service you have received from your surgery, initially discuss this with your health care professional or practice manager. There are well documented ways to take matters further if you are not happy with this but local resolution of problems, if possible, is nearly always best.

While Working.... ......for an organization that delivers lunches to elderly people in their home, I used to take my 4-year-old daughter on my afternoon rounds. She was unfailingly intrigued by the various appliances of old age, particularly the canes, walkers and wheelchairs. One day I found her staring at a pair of false teeth soaking in a glass and as I braced myself for the inevitable barrage of questions, she merely turned and whispered:

'The tooth fairy will never believe this!'

The Labour Party Candidate.......for North Walsham East.

North Norfolk Labour Party members have re-selected Stephen Burke to fight the North Walsham East by-election.Mr Burke, from Happisburgh, fought the division in the Norfolk County Council elections in May and increased the Labour vote by 240% compared to four years before. Stephen sits on both the board of the Victory Housing Trust and Nth Norfolk Community Transport, and has a passionate belief that affordable housing & transport are crucial to helping local people work, study, and live in North Norfolk. He is a volunteer at Happisburgh lighthouse and a campaigner on ambulance response times, access to the beach and coastal defences.Stephen said: “After just four months since the county council elections the people of North Walsham East are being asked to vote again for a new councillor. The Lib Dems have let the electorate down again, and I believe that Labour stands a good chance of winning this seat.We had a significant increase in the vote last time, and we will be building upon this over the coming weeks.Only the Labour Party can be trusted to stand up for ordinary people up against three other Tory parties.”The by-election takes place on Thursday 24th October. See Page 10 for the list of all the candidates who are standing for North Walsham East.

Cornet or Trumpet What’s The Difference?Noooo! You don’t lick one and blow the other. For those who may not know it, they are two musical instruments which are almost the same. (Thinking about it, you could put a huge dollop of ice cream in the bell of a cornet and ...phew, what a blow out.)

Seriously though, the difference between the two is in the shape of the tube through which the air travels to produce the notes. The result is that the cornet has a more mellow tone than the trumpet, which produces a sharper sound. While cornets, and not trumpets, are the choice of brass bands, there are many musicians who play both, as do some of the bandsmen/women of the Cromer and Sheringham Brass Band. But hey, to hear what a cornet sounds like why not come along at 7.30 pm to the Band’s Concert at St Peters Church, Sheringham, on Saturday 26th October. The concert is being held to raise funds for renovation of the Church. Admission is free, although any contribution you would like to make to the retirement collection would be very much appreciated. Finally, if you feel that deep inside you there lurks the desire to learn to play a cornet, or any other brass band instrument come to that, why not have a chat with a member of the band on the evening of the Concert. Alternatively, visit our web site below. Remember you are never too old, or too young, to learn to play. See you on Friday the 26th October at St Peter’s Church. www.cromerandsheringhambrassband.com

Gardeners’ World Story Comes To Sheringham

There have been many presenters of the BBC’s Gardeners’ World since it was first broadcast in 1968 but surely the best loved was the shows longest-serving presenter , Geoff Hamilton, who was associated with the programme from 1979 until his death in 1996 when he suffered a heart attack on a charity bike ride. His practical hands-on experience, down-to-earth approach to gardening and his desire to share his failures as well as his successes with the audience, combined with a gentle humour were some of the keys to his success and popularity. He was a committed & informed early advocate of the organic approach to gardening, helping to dispel the rather widely held belief that organic gardening was slightly odd and cranky. In 1985 Geoff was responsible for moving the show’s venue to his own garden at Barnsdale in Rutland. This garden, now consisting of 38 themed gardens over 8 acres remains open to the public and is run by his son Nick. Nick’s passion for gardening started when he was aged 9 and after attending Writtle College which included a sandwich year placement at Darby Nursery Stock in Norfolk, he returned to Barnsdale in 1989 to work with his father in the family business.Nick took over the running of Barnsdale Gardens when Geoff died and has developed it into the inspirational garden that it is today and which attracts over 40,000 visitors each year.On Thursday 17th October Nick Hamilton will be coming to Sheringham to talk about his father and the years of filming Gardeners World at Barnsdale and everyone is welcome. Nick will also be bringing a selection of his plants from Barnsdale to sell on the night. The meeting which is free to members of Sheringham Horticultural Society will be held in the Lighthouse Community Church, 62 Cromer Road, Sheringham and starts at 7.30pm. with a charge of £3 for visitors.
