Editors CornerWelcome all ISPRS SC Newsleer readers!

Since the rst youth acvies in Istanbul Congress in 2004, IS-PRS Student Consorum provides a link between the sciencand technical world and lls the gaps between the generaonsof the society. Although a short me for such a global network, students and young professionals from all around the world - so

far more than 30 countries - gathered together under ISPRS SC,believing that they are the keystones for a more sustainable en-vironment and a beer World.Within four years, many students and young professionals havebeneted from being part of ISPRS SC. The rst acvies of theyouth forum in the previous Congress program has become anocial part of the ISPRS Congresses and Beijing youth forum withtechnical oral and panel sessions, panels, SC assembly will takeplace. In recent years youth focused ISPRS Workshops and Sum-mer Schools have taken place. At these workshops specialisedtopics provide a meeng point for the young scholars to learnmore from the Worlds leading experts. Our acve mailing list ofthe SC and the ocial web site are opening new opportuniesfor the members of the Student Consorum, for example, freeeducaonal and technical materials, job and training announce-ments, discussion boards and much more... The periodic news-leer of the SC prepared by its members has been a key tool fornews and synchronising the knowledge from around the world.

We believe, the number of increased volunteer members tosupport the backbone of SC acvies and Regional Coordina-tors who aim to increase the eciency of the SC are the bestclues that day by day the interest to SC increasing and reachingto more individuals. In the coming years, we hope to see a con-nued growth in membership within the Student Consorum.

Spotlights - SC & WG VI/5The ISPRS Student Consorum has been in ex-

istence for four years. During this me people

from Australia to Finland, South America to

Middle East, students and young professionals

have established an excellent working network.

In this text we would like to introduce ourselves.

Lets go then back to the beginning.

Our mission was (and sll is):Student Consorum provides a plaorm for

exchange of informaon and organize student-

specic events either independently (e.g. sum-

mer schools) or within larger ISPRS events. The

Student Consorum is an important connecon

between students and ISPRSs professional ac-

vies, way to get students familiar with and

interested in ISPRS acvies. All the advanced

diploma students and young researchers doing

their Master or PhD studies in ISPRS eld can

    join along.

The rst major acvity of ISPRS SC was the rstSummer School in Istanbul in 2005. Aer thissummer school the major coordinators andlocal students who were involved in the orga-

nizaon of the summer school connued withtheir acvies with dierent melines.

The next important ISPRS SC event was the sec-ond Summer School in Slovenia in 2007. Theinaugural members became less acve duringthis two years period, on the second SS a newteam and organizaonal structure were estab-lished. Students from local groups and mem-bers lled in the exisng and new posions of

    the ISPRS SC.

    3

Regarding the new structure such acvies asSC Newsleer, new SC Webpage and RegionalCoordinators posions were established. Coor-dinator-in-Chief is sll a head of the whole or-ganizaon, but his role becomes more manage-rial.

In 2007, the rst issue of ISPRS SC Newsleerwas published. The electronic newsleer is aproduct of internaonal cooperaon betweenthe members within the SC. It is a main mediumfor ISPRS SC communicaon and promoon.

In 2008 next important event is planned. Thethird Summer School will take place in Nanjing,China, 27 June 1 July 2008. There are morethan 50 parcipants from around the world reg-istered.

Figure 1. Distribuon of SC Members among thecountries, 2006

Without any doubts, the benets of the SC areimportant for two reasons; young professionalsand the organizaon. All those ideas below arecovered:

Provide exchange of informaon,Integraon with profession,Connect people and groups with similar in-terests,Help to solve problems and take powerfulacts and decisions,Crate bridges between people, communiesand Internaonal Organizaons.

Intensive promoonal work of the WG VI/5and the Student Consorum through dierentevents and acvies, presented above, have re-

sulted in a very rich student - related programmeprepared for the ISPRS Congress, Beijing, 2008.One complete day (5th July) is dedicated to theYouth Forum (YF), containing four technical ses-sions and poster session (around 90 papers alto-gether). Aer which a panel session will be car-ried out. Its tle is: How to get involved in thesociety and enter upon a successful career foryoung professionals. For the end a student ex-cursion to the Great Wall will be organized (6th

July).During the Congress WG VI/5 and the StudentConsorum will make a promoon at the boothwithin the Technical Exhibion area. Do not for-get to meet us there.

If you would like to join us, join a word widenetwork of friendship relaon with other youngresearchers from around the World. Just nd usduring the ISPRS Congress or go to our web page

    Spotlights - SC & WG VI/5

The Student Consorum (SC) is not only a promoon for students but alsoa bridge between the future members of the society. With the establish-ment of SC, the lifecycle of a member of ISPRS has the chance to startearlier with ISPRS SC. Anyone who is interested in it and who wants toacvely parcipate in the scienc and technical acvies of ISPRS, tech-

nical commissions and working groups, it is a good start to begin rst withthe SC. All young researchers which would like to work with us, spreadand improve our network are welcome.

Figure 2: The developed organizaonal structure of the SC,

authors: A. Lisec and M. Kosman Fras.

As SC expends and provides a basic step to entering ISPRS society, newworking group members, ocers and future Councils of ISPRS could be ex-pected from todays student members.

This structure presented in Figure 2 sll needs to be developed. We needto work on it and without doubt the organisaon requires new energecvoluntaries to make it happen.

    Future aims are as follow:

Establish a network covering the whole world and nd suitable Regional1.Coordinators on each connent which will be able to movate their localstructure to be acve in ISPRS development.Establish a ISPRS SC web forum and server which will be our window for2.world and makes our communicaon easier.

Improve our Newsleer, to make it interesng for students from around3. the world.Organize rst ISPRS SC conference, where young researches will present4.their works and get experience for future professional career.

Do not hesitate to contact any of our regional Coordinators. You willbe really welcome and we hope, like we do, you will enjoy our acvies. If you think that this is a challenging topic for you, do not wait just,JOIN US!!!

Promoon of the Profession to Students

The main purpose of the ISPRS WG VI/5 is smulaon to scienc and re-search work, and promoon of the ISPRS profession to talented graduate,post-graduate students and young researchers. It presents the main link be-tween students from dierent countries and ISPRS. The working group oerssupport to student coordinators of the Student Consorum (SC), both partsworking very closely together. Thus, the structure and work of the WG VI/5diers in some way from the other ISPRS working groups.

The Working Group VI/5 Promoon of the Profession to Students and hencethe Student Consorum was founded during the ISPRS Congress 2004 in Is-tanbul under the ISPRS Technical Commission VI Educaon and Outreach.General focus and objecves of the working group have been dened andsummarized in the Terms of Reference as follows:

Promoon and support of internaonal student acvies including the

ISPRS Student Consorum.Encouragement of acve parcipaon of students, especially undergradu-ate students, in ISPRS events and promoon of reduced fees and spendfor their parcipaon.Collecon and maintenance of a database on persons who are involvedin the promoon of the profession to students, including the members ofISPRS Student Consorum and educators.

In the four year period (2004-2008) many posive results have been achievedtogether with the Student Consorum. The most important are organizaonof three summer schools (Istanbul, 2005; Ljubljana, 2007; Nanjing, 2008), edi-on of SC Newsleer, formaon and maintenance of WG VI/5 and StudentConsorum web pages, establishment of SC membership network, and devel-opment of student related programme for the Congress in Beijing, 2008.

    Spotlights - SC & WG VI/5

University Professors, assistants, researchers and other professionals, whohave regular contacts with young people studying in the ISPRS relatedelds, are warmly invited to become members of the WG VI/5. Joiningthe working group, you will regularly receive collected informaon on theISPRS acvies for students and you will be asked to promote these acvi-es to students and young professionals.

Please, visit the WG VI/5 webpage:hp://www.commission6.isprs.org/wg5/and contact the working group leading team to get addional informaon:

In 2004, when I was preparing for my travel to Istanbul to aend theISPRS Congress, I received an e-mail from Prof. Rahmi Celik of Istan-bul Technical University. He was preparing to organize the Young Fo-rum (YF) at the Congress, and asked me to give a talk at the YF sessionas the new coming TC VI President. I accepted. When I arrived at theCongress place, Rahmi and more than 10 students from various coun-

es who were working for YF came to the TC VI oce and asked me toset up a student organizaon under TC VI. We discussed several hourson why do we need and how to set up such an organizaon within IS-PRS. The students were very enthusiasc. Finally, I agreed to work forthem. At the panel discussion of YF, the students, young researchers,Council members and myself exchanged ideas on this issue and theCouncil agreed to set up a student organizaon under TC VI. Thus, theStudent Consorum (SC) was set up as the rst ocial student organiza-on within ISPRS. We also setup WG VI/5 for supporng the acvies

of SC. Since then, SC has organized three summer schools, includingthe one organized in Nanjing just before the 2008 Congress, submieda number of newsleers and expanded the membership world wide.Aer four years, some of the original members who did great jobs in thebeginning have le SC. We say they are graduated and they are nowgood supporters of SC. How about the current status of SC? I can saythat the Student Coordinators, namely Cemal zgr Kvlcm, KrzysztofStereczak, Gregor Stavbar, Sultan Kocaman, Yong Zhang, MohammedElmontsar Eltahir and Kyaw Sann Oo are forming a very good team un-der the support of WG VI/5 chaired by Mojca Fras. The most important

thing was that the SC members have made their own plans for SC. Theenergies of SC are willingness and curiosity of the members to serve forthe internaonal society. I am expecng SC to do something that theonly younger generaon can do and blow fresh winds to ISPRS. I have nodoubt that the members of SC will be leading our society in the future. For the last, I would like to thank Manos Baltsavias (the Second VicePresident of ISPRS), Rahmi Celik (WG VI/5 Chair 2004-2006), MojcaFras(WG VI/5 Chair 2006-2008), Zhu Qing(WG VI/5 Co-Chair) and AnkaLisec(WG VI/5 Secretary) for their dedicated support to SC.

    Spotlights - SC & WG VI/5

Central America is a region with an amazing richness in terms of naturalresources. In this region, we can nd extremely biodiverse ecosystemsboth terrestrial and aquac; some remarkable examples are the tropi-cal rainforests spreading all throughout the region, starng in Panamaup to Southern Mexico and the coral reefs in the Caribbean. Also of great

importance in the region are the agricultural and forestry resources. Cen-tral America is a region where remote sensing applicaons are just begin-ning to show their great potenal and it is here that the parcipaon ofa young enthusiasc group such as ISPRS SC can play a crical role in thisdevelopment. The Central America SC members are eager to learn andexplore new applicaons of remote sensing to the study an understand-ing of tropical ecosystems, to the development of sustainable food pro-ducon and forest management strategies. As Central America regionalcoordinators, we will do our best to coordinate the iniaves and acvi-es in this area and to contribute as much as possible to the developmentof new remote sensing applicaons in my region. We hope to aid con-tact between the countries in my region to combine successfully combinetheir eorts.

Elena Lobo and Carlomagno Soto,Regional Coordinators for Central America

The ISPRS Student Consorum plays an important role in Australia as it al-lows the development of cross-regional networks between those with aninterest and engaged in photogrammetry, remote sensing and the spaalsciences. Moreover, the Student Consorum acts as a support tool todiscuss common interests and issues relevant to young researchers andprofessionals. Members benet from sharing knowledge, increasing ex-perience and growing ideas, and gain movaon from the enthusiasm oftheir peers. Having an acve community of researchers in photogram-metry and remote sensing, Australia is bidding to host the 2012 ISRPSCongress. If successful, many youth acvies will be held to support theISPRS Student Consorum, as we recognize the contribuon of youth to

    a sustainable society.

Joanne Poon, Regional Coordinator for Australia

A Great Start, A Long Way to Go

The ISPRS WG VI/5 and the Student Consorum have just4 years of life. And in these 4 years, in spite of some ini-al dicules and the great mobility of the students whichmakes stable organizaonal structures dicult, they showedremarkable achievements. The various summer schools and

other educaonal/training acvies, parcipaon in interna-onal student organizaons, establishment of a quite broad

network of members and regional coordinators, set up of their WEB sites, start of the Newsleer, and broader acvies in the Beijing Congress com-pared to the Istanbul 2004 Congress. WG VI/5 and SC are among the mostacve enes within the ISPRS Commissions, if not the most acve. It is notby chance that the WG VI/5 Chair, Mojca Fras, will be honored in Beijing withthe ISPRS Presidents Citaon. The SC is here to stay and should improve itsacvies. Much more members should be recruited in the Americas and in

Africa, with events organized also in these regions. A more formal and stableorganizaonal structure should be established to ensure connuity and goodcoordinaon, however avoiding rigid and bureaucrac procedures which donot t to the spirit of young people. SC should take more responsibilies, with the WG VI/5 providing rather supervision and advice. The WEB sites,Newsleer and other communicaon means should be enriched with moreinformaon valuable for students. Acve solicing of sponsors is needed tosupport student awards and parcipaon in events, especially the Congress. These are just some examples for possible improvements. The SC should dis-cuss about their future work during their general assembly in Beijing and

    take decisions.

On behalf of the ISPRS Council I would like to congratulate WG VI/5 and SC ontheir achievements and wish them great success in their Summer School inNanjing and the Youth Forum acvies, scienc and social, during the Bei-jing Congress. We look forward to a great 2008-2012 period and wish you allthe best. And a personal word of thanks to all of you. I have greatly enjoyedworking with you and being with you, you made me feel much younger!

PointCloud 4.0 and PointCloud Pro 4.0

Kubit (Germany) has released PointCloud 4.0 and PointCloud Pro 4.0. These new versions introduce

a number of funcons, which facilitate and speed up the processing and evaluaon of point cloudsof laser scanners in AutoCAD.

Now mulple point clouds can be edited and worked with at once.Besides clash detecon PointCloud Pro allows for ng polylines, cylinders (pipes) or planes to dened secons of point clouds.Intersecng such planes is easy and results in accurate objectedges and corners. It is possible to dene secons along Auto-CAD curves. One essenal improvement is the possibility to alignan AutoCAD UCS with adjusted planes or point cloud secons.Funconality to imply photos (provided by the scanner) into theprocessing speeds up the workow and increases the precision ofthe nal product. Lines drawn on these images are directly taken over into the point cloud and aredisplayed as lines in geometrically correct posional arrangement. Inside the oriented photos cor-ners, edges and lines can be determined much easier und more accurately. Drawing with PointCloudsupports the perspecve mode of AutoCAD.If you are interested try a free of charge trial version. Info:hp://www.kubit.de/

This release also features several benets specic to medium format digitalcameras. These enhancements include a new user-friendly interface for cam-era le informaon, describing each of the parameters associated with camerales. In addion, LPS 9.2 supports addional camera formats and parameters,

including SMAC, AUSTRALIS and ORIMA extended parameters. This enhance-ment promotes higher accuracy for the images captured by medium formatdigital cameras.

Featuring numerous producvity enhancements, LPS 9.2 empowers users tomore accurately and eecvely complete their me-sensive geospaal proj-ects, said Ryan Strynatka, LPS Product Manager, Leica Geosystems GeospaalImaging. This excing release reects Leica Geosystems overall strategy of de-veloping the most appropriate technological advancements to meet and anci-pate customer needs.

In addion, LPS 9.2 includes several other performance improvements, pro-viding enhanced memory handling and greater support of larger projects. Inthe Terrain Editor module, a component of LPS, the new Terrain-Following Cur-sor mode automacally moves to the surface of the terrain model, simplifyingeding and quality control. The Terrain Prep tool, now also a part of ERDASIMAGINE Advantage, quickly merges terrain models into a single output. Han-dling large les very eecvely, this enhancement especially benets LIDARworkows dealing with dense data.

The new rigorous sensor models supported in LPS 9.2 include ALOS PRISM RPC,ALOS PRISM, EROS-B, GeoEye-1, Worldview-1, THEOS and FORMOSAT. Alsonoteworthy, LPS Core includes ERDAS IMAGINE Advantage 9.2, expanding theremote sensing and image processing capabilies of this soluon.LPS 9.2 is expected to begin shipping in early 2008.

Aerial LiDAR is accepted as the most ecient and cost-eecvemeans to create accurate digital elevaon and terrain data. It has be-come the standard for ood mapping and many other applicaonsrequiring fast, accurate, inexpensive Digital Terrain Models (DTMs),Digital Elevaon Models (DEMs) and other geospaal features.
