Innovations build the foundation of all markets. They encourage and foster development, and sometimes even create entirely new industries. In sports, for example, windsurfing, snowboarding, inline skating, Nordic walking, kitesurfing, and carving all began as wonderful innovations that enriched our markets. Because new developments will always both intrigue and inspire those in their industry, the big question on every sports business professional’s mind at ISPO MUNICH will be, “What’s new in the sports industry?”
In order to put all of these outstanding innovations in the spotlight, we created a new award concept. We combined the previous community awards by ISPO (Outdoor Award, European Ski Award, Boardsports Award, Runner’s World Award and Eco Responsibilty Award) under the new and powerful ISPO AWARD label. Winners are recognized as one of the biggest sporting goods innovations by an independent and competent jury consisting of international journalists, retailers, designers, and athletes. The new ISPO AWARD will serve as a dependable guide for sports business professionals, international media, and consumers.
In this first ISPO AWARD yearbook, you will see the awarded innovations of 2012. But this is just the beginning. In upcoming years, we will establish the ISPO AWARD as the ultimate seal of approval in the entire sports business industry and beyond.

/// Welcome to the new ISPO AWARD
4
The previous ISPO Awards, which were the community specific awards of the leading international sports business platform, are now being united to form the new ISPO AWARD. ISPO is the international service partner of the sports business industry that, like in the past, promotes their innovations. The new ISPO AWARD label stands as a dependable seal of approval for innovations in the sports business market and will serve as a trend indicator to media, retailers and consumers.
The ISPO AWARD is divided into two divisions, Product and Eco Responsibility, which represent outstanding innovation, design and performance. The products are segmented as Action, Outdoor, Ski or Performance, and then divided into the following six categories: Hardware, Apparel, Footwear, Accessories Hardware, Accessories Apparel and Ingredients.
The application process was altered with the introduction of the new ISPO AWARD. In addition to the conventional application material, such as product samples, pictures and logo, the applicants have a chance to submit a video, in order to explain their product to the jury in their own words.
Award recognition is decided by an independent, international jury consisting of journalists, dealers, designers and athletes selected to cover the entire spectrum. The jury will only select nominees if the standard of the submitted products in innovation, design and performance is above market level. Out of these nominees, a winner might be selected if innovation, design and performance are very outstanding. In other words, the election of a winner is not mandatory.
The winners and nominees of various categories are supported by the ISPO through an extensive public relations and commu-nications package, including publication in the ISPO AWARD yearbook, presentation on the ISPO AWARD website, and partici-pation in a roadshow with selected sports retailers and partners.
Until now, there has not been an innovation award focused on the entire range of the sports business industry, thus drawing the attention of international media towards the ISPO AWARD recipients. But the vision of the ISPO AWARD goes even beyond that: The awards are intended to be broadcasted to consumers via various communication activities which serve as an informative and dependable seal of quality.
/// A fresh start
5
Moreover, there is a detailed plan surrounding the ISPO AWARD in the coming years to add new sections and categories and to expand to represent the full range of the sports business industry. With the ISPO AWARD, ISPO extends its portfolio to include another important building block in the interest of their customers.
Definition of the ISPO AWARD segments
In the action segment one can find all those activities usually grouped under the term of action sports. These activities generally involve high speed, extreme heights, highly specialized gear or spectacular stunts and are all adrenalin-powered.
The ski segment summarizes the different variations of traditional skiing.
Outdoor includes all sport activities where nature plays a central role.
In the performance segment are those sports which help an athlete to either maintain or increase their physical fitness level. These activities normally require a high degree of physical exertion and strength.

The Eco Responsibility division for the ISPO AWARD is an indicator for sustainable development in the sporting goods industry. In recent years, trends toward eco responsibility have been spreading. As current discussions about climate change and social responsibility gain momentum, so does the signifi-cance of this award.
6
The simple things are what make the biggest difference and, most of the time, also require the most effort. New and innovative products are not easy to come by. They require not just a creative idea, but also extreme dedication and passion. Years of intensive research, setbacks, successes, as well as the blood, sweat and tears of those dedicated to the idea are all what stand behind a powerful product. When all of this hard and disciplined work is finally acknowledged by an expert jury in the form of an ISPO AWARD, we want to be sure that we celebrate it the best way possible.
To that purpose, Tao Schirrmacher, one of the best river surfers at Eisbach, a world famous surf spot, and a creative designer living in Munich, has been commissioned to design the ISPO AWARD trophy. Made of steel, lasered, engraved and some of them even polished. This trophy is sure to encompass the great honor behind recei-ving an ISPO AWARD in both a minimalist and inspiring fashion.
The individual awards are presented during the ISPO AWARD Ceremony at the ISPO Snow, Ice & Rock Summit in hall A6 on Monday, January 30, 2012 at 5 pm. Klaus Dittrich, CEO Messe München and Tobias Gröber, Business Unit Leader for Consumer Goods, will open the event. The host will be Markus Othmer, one of the best known sports anchormen in Germany. His portfolio includes speaking at many events including the Nokia Night of the Proms and the Track World Championships of 2009 in Berlin as well as many other sporting events.
/// Honor for those who deserve it
7
This year’s ISPO AWARD Ceremony will be both exciting and special. At this event, the overall winner of each segment will officially be presented to the public and international media for the first time. The overall winners will be those which the jury found to be among the most innovative products from over 262 applicants. This ceremony is sure to be thrilling.
Since receiving an award should include adequate celebration, the ISPO AWARD Ceremony will be followed by the ISPO Outdoor & Ski Get-together.

The quality of an award is only as good as that of the jury that bestows it. For ISPO, it was important that the juries in each segment represented a combination of professional expertise and internationality, included both men and women, and consisted of a mixture of journalists, retailers, designers and athletes.
This was an interesting challenge. However, Messe München International was very pleased with the composition of the jury. The juries included representatives from more than nine countries, 27 magazines and eight retailers as well as a number of designers and athletes. The variation in special knowledge and background ensured that the jury elected the most deserving products to be amongst the winners and nominees of the first ISPO AWARD.
In contrast to the jury in the product division, the jury mem-bers for the Eco Responsibility division were independent representatives of environmental organizations and experts in sustainable production. They reviewed the submissions together with sport, fashion and industry designers. In order to ensure that the decision is made independently, half of the jury members will be replaced by others. This ensures that the same jury will never decide twice.
/// Pure Competence
In addition, it is essential for ISPO that the jury has complete freedom in their decision-making. For example, they can regroup categories if necessary. It is the jury’s choice if there should be just one winner per category and no nominees, no winner and several nominees or even no winners and no nominees at all.
The comprehensive and international expertise from the accumulated know-how of the jury members is a key factor in ensuring the success of the ISPO AWARD. Since innovation and market opportunities cannot be calculated in any spread-sheet, this expert knowledge is vital in selecting the best of the products submitted
The jury meeting itself was marked by many animated and interesting discussions. The atmosphere was intense up until the final selection of the Overall Winners. The jury deeply analyzed each product and sought to award those which they considered to be the most innovative and cutting-edge.
Furthermore, the jury members seized the opportunity to net-work. Sports business professionals from different fields, such as snowboarding and outdoor, came together and were able to gain new perspectives on their industry.
Now here’s a chance for you to have a look at this year’s ISPO AWARD jury.

InnovationA binding is an interface between you and the board. So, its all about distributing your energy as effectively as possible, at the right place. Our binding Hanger does the job of transferring the energy to your edges via bushings.
DesignHanger: transfers the rider’s energy input directly to the edges by pivoting. Bushing: to dampen the ride and diffuses chatter when going through choppy and icy snow.Flush cup: To hold the boots for riding without highback.
PerformanceThe bindings is so efficient that you need less effort to make a turn which makes the overall experience more enjoyable and less tiring. Improvements are: edge control, responsive-ness comfort and less prone to have foot pain / cramps.
Inspired by skateboard trucks. The Hanger transfers energy directly to the edge of the board. Traditional bindings diminish energy by bending the baseplate. The IPO’s efficient energy transfer gets more power to the board with less work.

Sustainable DevelopmentThe properties of transfer yarns are identical to those of undyed yarns - Mammut transfer yarn products therefore offer the highest safety and excellent handling properties, as well as making a positive contribution to your ecological footprint.
PerformanceClimbing rope made of pre consumer recycled raw material.
Corporate Social and Environmental ResponsibilityMammut is convinced: social and environmental responsibility is central to sustainable business success. Mammut differs between three main dimensions of corporate responsibility: people, communities, planet.
Climbing rope made of 100% green transfer yarn.
mAmmut / 9.8 transformer///
“The existing system for producing ropes involved a yarn
dyeing process that necessitated the waste of a significant
percentage of the expensive raw materials as the colour
changed from one to the next. Mammut’s new Transformer 9.8
has a mantle that is produced using the entire yarn without wasting the
transfer section, the result of which is a substantial reduction in waste and
ropes with a new visual look.”

“Whilst the Jury felt unable at this stage to give
the Toray Hybrid Engineering a prize, they would
like to commend the company for embarking on
the development of a biomass based alternative
to petro-chemical based yarns. The view of the Jury is that there
is considerable potential for the future in this biomass approach
and look forward to further information.”

The German Design Council is organised as a non-profit making foundation with, at present, over 170 members from the fields of business, design, associations and institutions. All attach great importance to design as a tool for the creation of both cultural and economic values. As formulated in the founding resolution of the German Parliament, the Meeting of the Foundation Members represents a platform for communication between all forces involved in the design process.
Thanks to its interdisciplinary orientation, it is also a unique forum for the supra-sector exchange of information for the development of design, which guarantees the transfer of knowledge between the German Design Council and its target groups.
