The current system has been demonstrated for 13 C: 12 C (δ 13 )analysis inCO 2. The instrument is designed to offer high precision, real time measurements in a compact and robust package. The instrument was designed to include an on-board calibration system for autonomous operation and enhanced stability and accuracy. Laser based techniques have been developed that overcome several limitations of IRMS including real time analysis and portability. However, laser techniques developed to-date commonly apply high precision optical cavities as the basis of operation which rely on high reflectivity optics in order to achieve near equivalent precision as IRMS. This adds considerable complexity and introduces limitations in terms of sample handling and robustness to the system design. The LIR uses the advantages of the Mid-IR and an innovative optical design to achieve performance without compromise to robustness. Advantages: The LIR brings simplicity to stable isotope analysis, whether in the field or in a laboratory environment. The instrument’s design originated as part of a European Space Agency programme to demonstrate the LIR for planetary landers. Overall the design offers compactness, robustness and precision without the need for a skilled operator or excessive use of consumables. < Field deployable analyser capable of real time d 13 C for CO 2. < Built in auto-calibration system, far reduced operation costs and maintenance. < Built in reference systems ensures stability and accuracy over greater period of time. < High precision, <0.15 ‰ in 35s measurement. < Compact & robust, suitable for field deployment. < Platform system that can be configured for other stable isotopes using the same principles. Key Features < High precision and accuracy < Fast measurements < Highly robust, field deployable < Built in permanent calibration Applications < Environmental Science < Medical Diagnosis < Mud Gas Isotope Logging
