6 Adhesive Tapes for Electrical Insulation

General Specifications

Adhesive type

AcrylicAcrylic adhesive resists to varnish solvents even if not fully cured. The acrylic offers a high ageing resistance until 155°C in use.

Natural rubber adhesiveNatural rubber adhesive requires lowest tem-perature cure cycle to reach its maximum performance but is limited at 130°C for continu-ous use.

Silicone adhesiveSilicone adhesive is used when extremely high temperature is required and up to 180°C. The heat cycle for this adhesive is higher and longer.

ThermosettingHaving the property to perform in a higher bonding when heated or cured.

Flame retardant The adhesive complies with non burning properties.

Thermosetting cycles

For thermosetting acrylic andrubber adhesivesat 120°C (250°F): 3 hoursat 130°C (275°F): 2 hoursat 150°C (300°F): 1 hour

For thermosetting silicone adhesivesat 260°C (500°F): 2 hours 24 hours recommended for maximum resistance to solvent

Storage conditionsFor the best shelf life, storage temperature should be between 15°C to 25°C Relative Humidity: 50 % (± 30 %)

Adhesive Tapes for Electrical Insulation 7

The Appropriate Solution

Polyimide filmsAn excellent choice for high temperature insulation and processing applications thanks to:

» very high heat resistance (between 120°C and 350° for short periods)

» high dielectric strength

Examples: Intertape® 4118, Isotape® 4428 PV3, Intertape® 4429, Intertape® 51579

Speciality

» The unique characteristics of these tapes make them extremely suitable for high voltage insulation applications.

» Zone coating (4564) allows complete impregnation of the varnish.

» An innovative backing (51600 PV3) provides unique properties to fulfil application requirements of new generations of coils.

Polyester reinforced glass filamentThese tapes are mainly compatible with insulation oil for immersed transformers. An excellent choice for heavy duty bundling insulation thanks to:

» high tensile strength with glass filament

» high dielectric properties from the polyester film

Examples: Intertape® 4238, Intertape® 51597, Intertape® 51599 PV1

Glass cloths

» Flexibility and conformability are key features of this product group.

» High heat resistance and tensile strength of the glass cloth fulfil many electrical insulation application requirements.

Examples: Intertape® 461FR, Intertape® 4616, Intertape® 4617, Intertape® 4618, Isotape® 4627, Isotape® 4637PV3, Isotape® 4638 PV3, Intertape® 54562

Polyester laminatesBoth types of polyester laminates offer unique properties.

» Paper/Polyester offers bulk, stiffness and is hand tearable.

» Polyester/Non-woven offers excellent puncture resistance and conformability.

» Higher temperature performance with acrylic adhesives.

Examples: Intertape® 4426, Isotape® 51044PV3 Intertape® 51595, Intertape® 51596, Isotape® 54354

Polyester films

» Excellent combination of qualities: high insulation properties and high dielectric strength at low thickness (25 μ).

» Acrylic adhesives enhance these films by giving the products good chemical and solvent resistance.

» Some polyester films are UL Flame Retardant.

Examples: Isotape® 50501, Intertape® 51587, Intertape® 51588, Intertape® 51594, Intertape® 54108, Intertape® 54113, Isotape® 51350PV3, Isotape® 51350PV3-2, Intertape® 51589
