4.6 Management Review
ISO 14001: 1996
The organizations top management shall, atintervals it determines, review theenvironmental management system, toensure its continuing suitability, adequacyand effectiveness. The managementreview process shall ensure that thenecessary information is collected to allowmanagement to carry out this evaluation.This review shall be documented.
ISO 14001: 2004
Top management shall review theorganization's environmental managementsystem, at planned intervals, to ensure itscontinuing suitability, adequacy andeffectiveness. Reviews shall includeassessing opportunities for improvementand the need for changes to theenvironmental management system,including the environmental policy andenvironmental objectives and targets.Records of the management reviews
shall be retained.

ISO 14001: 1996
The management review shall address thepossible need for changes to policy,objectives and other elements of theenvironmental management system, inthe light of environmental managementsystem audit results, changingcircumstances and the commitment tocontinual improvement
ISO 14001: 2004
Input to management reviews shall include
a) results of internal audits andevaluations of compliance with legalrequirements and with otherrequirements to which the organizationsubscribes,
b) communication(s) from externalinterested parties, includingcomplaints,
c) the environmental performance of theorganization,

The outputs from management reviews shall include any decisions andactions related to possible changes to environmental policy,objectives, targets and other elements of the environmentalmanagement system, consistent with the commitment to continualimprovement.

Registrars are required by the International AccreditationForum (IAF) to conduct all audits after May 15, 2005 usingISO 14001:2004 Areas of the management system that do not conform to the
new/modified 2001 requirements will be documented on anonconformity report

Conclusion
ISO 14001:2004 changes are more evolutionary thanrevolutionary .
Many existing certified ISO14001: 1996 organizations mayalready have evidence of meeting ISO 14001:2004requirements.
Documentation, Records, Corrective Action, Internal Auditing andManagement Reviews are now closely aligned with ISO9001:2000. Organizations and Auditors will want to consider thecontext in which to apply these clauses as related to theOrganizations Environmental Aspects and Impacts.
