WELCOME

Dot Tilbury

A busy year continued on a glorious day in July when the genuine old-fashioned

motorcycles were out in force enjoying theCentenary of the Mountain Course VintageMotorcycle re-enactment event. A happyband of riders and well-wishers witnessed theunveiling of a commemorative plaque at theoriginal starting line of the 1911 TT Races afterwhich the ‘race’ was re-started and theentourage continued round the course toRamsey then home.

There were many colourful characters inevidence and, incidentally, we think our specialcollection to mark the event is one of ourbest-ever collectables.

The plaque was locally-produced at the Pooil Vaaishstone works and unveiled by the Lieutenant-Governor HisExcellency Mr Adam Wood ably assisted by vintagemotorcycle enthusiast Alex Downie MLC.

In August we were pleased to meet thewinners of our Genealogy Prize Draw thatwe ran in tandem with Manx NationalHeritage. Mr Robert Shimmin and his wifeSue from Widnes, Cheshire enjoyed travel tothe Island, (courtesy of Isle of Man Tourism)and VIP access to the MNH archive -including assistance researching their Manxfamily connections by a genealogist from theIOM Family History Society.

Prizegiving - Mr Shimmin receives his stamps from Maxine and Dot

The Isle of Man was honoured to host theCommonwealth Youth Games in Septemberwhich assembled athletes between the ages of13 and 18 years old from the Commonwealthnations. Seven sports: athletics, badminton, boxing, cycling, gymnastics, rugby sevens andswimming were included in the Games andcompetition was fierce amongst these youngathletes. We wonder how many of thecompetitors will go on to be world class likeJessica Ennis who competed in the ‘YouthGames’ as a young athlete. Our Post Shopplayed a major part in the celebration as theofficial merchandise retail outlet in Douglas. The exhibition “Our Sporting Life” at ManxNational Heritage’s Manx Museum featuredthe many local sports men and women whohave made it onto the national and worldstage. Our miniature sheet and two-poundcoin proved hugely popular - all in all it was awonderful occasion for the Island.

Our theme for Christmas this year is ‘Birds inWinter’ featuring the ever-popular wildlifepaintings of local artist Jeremy Paul. Hisinspiration for the illustrations came duringthe heavy snowfalls of recent winters whenhe studied local birds in these extremely coldconditions. The issue also includes stampsdedicated to the Europa theme ‘Forests’ andthe SEPAC theme ‘Scenery’.

This year seems to have flown by, but our 2011Yearbook is a record of it all: as well as IOMPost Office news, our stamp issue chaptersare packed with exclusive stories and imageswhich we feel sure you will enjoy.

Next year is going to be very busy as wecelebrate Her Majesty the Queen’s DiamondJubilee and the London Olympics. We arelooking forward to the Olympics because notonly have we been fortunate in securing a topBritish designer to design our wonderfulstamps, but also the first race of London 2012will be the Men’s Cycling Road Race with theIsle of Man’s world cycling superstar MarkCavendish who is predicted to set theOlympics alight on 28th July 2012… fingerscrossed! Mark must surely be in line for theBBC’s Sports Personality of the Year - soplease help us to get him to the top of theleader board.

On behalf of us all, may I wish you a veryhappy Christmas and healthy New Year.

The first Commonwealth Youth Games were held inEdinburgh, Scotland in August 2000; since then Bendigo,Australia 2004 and Pune, India 2008 have also hosted theGames.

A decision was taken by the Commonwealth GamesFederation at their General Assembly in 2005 to award the2011 Commonwealth Youth Games to the Isle of Man.Preparations started immediately and now as we get evercloser the excitement is building and we are eager to givea warm Manx welcome to competitors, officials and guestsfrom many of the Commonwealth nations.

All competitors in the Commonwealth Youth Games arebetween the ages of 13 and 18 years old and a maximumnumber of 1000 athletes are invited to participate inseven sporting events; athletics, badminton, boxing, cycling, gymnastics, rugby 7’s and swimming.

Geoff Karran MBE, Games Director said, “After 6 years ofplanning we are now very excited that the Games are onlydays away and we hope to put on an event that the Isle ofMan will be proud of and one that will be rememberedfondly by our friends from the Commonwealth. All venuesare in place and ready for the start of the Games on the7th September. The all new Bowl Stadium will be thevenue for the Opening Ceremony which promises to be anexciting and memorable event with a 20 minuteentertainment section co-ordinated by Walk the Plank andfeaturing many of the Island’s young artists.

The volunteer response from the Manx public has beenexcellent and highlights the great importance the Manxcommunity place on encouraging young people to take upsport and recreation in order to gain a sense of personalwell being and competitive spirit.

The business community of the Island have also playedtheir part in bringing the 2011 Commonwealth YouthGames to fruition and Mr Karran added, “I would also liketo give a big thank you to the Isle of Man Government, the Games Partners and sponsors whose continued supporthas helped us tremendously in putting on these Games.”

The Hon. Michael Fennell OJ., CD, President of theCommonwealth Games Federation said: “This will be the fourth edition of the CommonwealthYouth Games and its popularity amongst competingcountries continues to grow. I am sure that visitingathletes and officials will have a memorable time in theIsle of Man thanks to the work and support of both theIsle of Man Government and the Manx population. Theopportunities that flow from hosting this event, includingvolunteering, will ensure that sport continues to be animportant part of life on the Island providing a legacy forlocal communities and visiting nations & territories in theyears to come.”

“The high quality competition that will be on display, theuniqueness of the venues and the athlete’s village willonly add to the development of some of the finestathletes in the world as they look ahead to the 2014Commonwealth Games in Glasgow and beyond. Thesignificance of the Commonwealth Youth Games in thedevelopment of today’s talent should not beunderestimated. Back in 2004 in Bendigo, Australia wesaw the likes of Jessica Ennis and Beth Tweddle competeand then go on to become world champions in theirrespective sports of athletics and gymnastics.”

The Isle of Man Post Office is pleased to present a miniature sheet of stamps featuring the official

CYG 2011 logo, and the Games mascot ‘Tosha’ to celebrate the fourth Commonwealth Youth Games

which take place on the Isle of Man from the 7th – 13th September 2011.

NEW RELEASE • Issue Date – 1st September 2011

Daffodils are as well loved in the Isle of Man as they areright across the British Isles. Every Island garden showsits rich drifts of cream and gold to welcome the sun inspring. The flowers are to be seen growing in yellowmasses in the Island’s beautiful wooded glens, andlandowners have planted thousands of bulbs alongroadside hedgerows.

The English wild daffodil Narcissus pseudo-narcissus isseldom seen in the wild in the Isle of Man, but two othervarieties have naturalised themselves successfully. Thedainty scented Narcissus minor is called the ‘ManxJonquil’ and can be seen widely, especially in the north ofthe Island. What could be an easier souvenir for a marinerto carry than a pocketful of seeds or a handful of bulbsfrom foreign parts? In view of the Island’s long seafaringtradition, it has been suggested that Narcissus minor wasprobably brought home by a Manx sailor direct from theIberian peninsula.

The old cultivar Narcissus telemonius plenus ‘Van Sion’, whichin England was first recorded in the seventeenth century, has become so common in Mann that it is referred to asthe ‘wild daffodil’. It is a curious bloom, sometimes withjust the trumpet doubled, sometimes with a completedouble ruff of shaggy petals, and occasionally with greenstreaks in the yellow. ‘Van Sion’ has been around longenough to acquire folklore and its own name in ManxGaelic, lus y ghuiy – the ‘goose plant’. It is said to be

unlucky to pick the flowers and bring them indoors beforethe goslings are hatched. A variation on this, according tothe late Dr Larch Garrad, one of the Island’s bestknownbotanists and author of “The Manx Garden”, was that thebad luck ceased on May Eve.

Narcissus ‘Butter and Eggs’, another double daffodil firstrecorded in England in 1777, has been identified here, ashas the more brightly coloured Narcissus ‘Raggedy Ann’. Arare sub-species of Narcissus poeticus, the pheasant’s eyenarcissus, has beenidentified by the RoyalHorticultural Societyfrom a site at Glenbooienear Peel, on the westcoast, as Narcissus poeticusssp. radiiflorus var. exertus.

In the 1890s Miss A. M.Crellin of Orrisdale, inthe north of the Island, was a noted breeder ofdaffodils and receivedan award from theSociety.

Robin IOM One of our most easily recognised birds, theRobin is almost synonymous with winter appearing oncountless Christmas cards! Robins feed on a range ofitems, including kitchen scraps, commercial birdfood aswell as earthworms and other invertebrates. At this timeof year they can be very tolerant of each other, being toopre-occupied with the business of feeding and stayingwarm to be territorial. Come the spring, however, theywill see off competing Robins to secure their ownbreeding ground.

Redwing UK Like the Waxwing, the Redwingis a winter visitor to the Island, though their nearestbreeding grounds are a little closer, with small numbersbreeding in Scotland. Come October large flocks ofRedwing and their larger relative, the Fieldfare, arriveon the Island, settling on the many fruit and berry treesthat line our hedges and roads, feeding voraciouslyuntil the trees are stripped bare and then move on. Theyoften visit gardens, though usually in smaller numbers, feeding on fallen apples, etc. Similar in size to thefamiliar Song Thrush, the cream eye-stripe and red flankare distinctive.

Goldfinch 58p (SEPAC theme) In the last ten or so yearsthis dainty, colourful finch has become a feature ofmany gardens during the winter, especially in thosewhere Nyjer seed is provided. It is probable that thewinter survival rate for Goldfinch has increased, as theysupplement their natural diet on food provided by themany people who derive pleasure from watching ‘their’birds in the garden. The Goldfinch is surely one of themost colourful and engaging of winter visitors, oftenarriving in flocks of ten or more, creating a riot of redand yellow as they flit through the foliage.

Siskin 68p (Europa 2011 “Forest” theme) Resident allyear round the Siskin, one of our smallest finches, willreadily visit gardens in the late summer through thewinter, taking seed from feeders, often defending theirplace against larger species such as the Great Tit.Although young birds and females appear rather drab, the male is quite striking with strong yellow-greenplumage and a black forehead and neat black bib. Themature conifer plantations of the Island provide manybreeding sites, accounting for the increased numbersseen in gardens over the last decade.

Waxwing 76p The Waxwing is a true winter visitor toour Island, their breeding grounds coveringnorth-eastern Scandinavia through to west Siberia.Following a good breeding season, when numbers arehigh or in years when berry supply is poor in theirusual wintering areas, large numbers of this striking,Starling sized bird reach the British Isles. Often they arevery tolerant of humans, allowing people to get within afew feet, as they feed on any soft fruit and berries theyencounter, allowing you to see up-close the beauty oftheir plumage.

Long-tailed Tit £2.00 This is one of the firm favourites ofthe winter garden scene. A tiny bird that looks like abundle of feathers with a tail stuck to it, the Long-tailedTit relies upon a group effort to survive the winter. Atnight they roost in a tight bundle to conserve body heat, whilst by day they are constantly on the move, stayingin contact with the rest of the group with a high-pitchedcontact call, all designed to minimise the risk ofpredators catching them. The more that survive themore there is the next night to huddle up with, a realgroup survival strategy!

Jeremy Paul’sBirds in WinterThe Isle of Man PostOffice is pleased topresent a set of sixstamps which featureoriginal artwork byIsland based artistJeremy Paul. The issuealso encompasses the2011 Europa theme“Forests” and theSEPAC theme of Scenery.

TRIUMPH HERALD SAILBOATNo one has ever designed a successful aquatic car, avehicle equally at home on both road and water. Thereason for this, according to James May, is becauseaquacars have always embraced the wrong power source.Ever at the forefront of technical innovation, wind-lovingCaptain Slow turned a classic Triumph into a classicschooner, complete with billowing mainsail and 20-footmast. The 'Mayflower' was a simple, eco-friendlysolution with just two fatal weaknesses:James’s total lackof sailing ability… and low road bridges.

CITROEN GRAND DESIGNFor years, Jeremy Clarkson has waged war on caravansand motorhomes, destroying these slow-moving, jack-knifing road menaces in ever more inventive ways. If youreckon they’re so rubbish, challenged Top Gear’sproducers, why don’t you build your own compact-yet-stylish motorhome? Jeremy did, and what a creation itwas: a three-storey Citroen with sleek modern lines and itsown Japanese contemplation area. Though an imposingsight, the mega-Citroen didn’t cope well with crosswinds.Or falling off a cliff…

HAMMERHEAD EAGLE i-THRUSTElectric cars should, in theory, be relatively simple todesign, with far fewer moving parts than one of those‘tricksy’ petrol vehicles. Turns out they're actually quitecomplicated. Tasked with building their own electric carfrom scratch, the boys borrowed the chassis from a TVRTamora and the electric motor from a milk float, adding arange of innovative design features including a ‘visibility hatch’ for Richard's head. Despite its rakish good looksand blistering performance, the Hammerhead Eagle i-Thrust failed to impress the independent road testersfrom Autocar magazine. On the plus side, it did dispose of Stig’s vegetarian cousin...

ROBIN RELIANT SPACE SHUTTLESpace shuttles are among the most expensive pieces of engineering in the world, costing literally billions of dollars to build, send into spaceand bring back down again. James and Richard believedthey could save the space industry a bunch of cash bybolting a Reliant Robin – every Yorkshireman's favouritethree-wheeler – to a blooming great rocket and standingwell back. The Reliant Shuttle took off with a bang, but thelanding didn’t go so well…

CARAVAN AIRSHIPAs we may have mentioned, Top Gear isn’t very keen oncaravans. But what if, instead of clogging up our roads, thecaravans took to the skies? With the aid of a giant balloon,an old caravan and a dangerous volume of propane, JamesMay set out to discover whether a wobbling holiday homeon wheels could be turned into a majestic airship.

POLAR HILUXWhen Jeremy and James were ordered to drive to the NorthPole, they declined, pointing out that the Arctic is very cold, very dangerous and very lacking in good pubs. But whenRichard rolled up on a traditional polar sled with a team ofhuskies, James and Jeremy felt obliged to defend thehonour of the car and reach the top of the world first. In aToyota Hilux modified with huge tyres and an escape hatchin the roof, they became the first men to reach the NorthPole by car, defeating Hammond and his gang of fetid dogsin the process.

After causing a national security scare by wandering intothe flyzone of Norwich airport, he concluded it probablycouldn’t.

The Isle of Man Post Office is pleased to present this set

of six lavishly tooled stamps to commemorate some of the

bravest and most innovative transport solutions created

by Top Gear, the UK’s most popular motoring programme.

PAGE 8 STAMP & COIN NEWS – AUTUMN 2011

Following the introduction of Manx decimal coins in 1971,new designs for the Island’s circulating coins were introducedin 1976.

½p Coin: Herring on an outline of the Isle of Man map. Theonce prolific herring industry provided the Manx people withtheir staple diet. Manx kippers produced from smoked herringare World famous. The waters around the Isle of Man,especially the west coast, have been commercially fished forherring since medieval times.

1p Coin: Loughtan Sheep. The Loughtan is an ancient Manxnative breed of sheep of unknown origin. The ram usually hasfour horns although it has been known to have six. The wool iswarm brown in colour and is always used in its undyed state.Alternative Manx spellings for this rare breed are Loughtan,Loughtyn or Loghtan.

2p Coin: Manx Shearwater. The largest known colony of ManxShearwater birds has been recorded on the Calf of Man. Thebirds were regarded by the Vikings as an omen for disasterwhen, in 1014, a nocturnal clamour of breeding birds circledabove two Viking ships anchored in Calf Sound on the eve ofthe Battle of Clontarf. The colony was wiped out by a plagueof rats (Manx longtails) in the late 18th century. A remarkablerecovery has been made recently and many Manx shearwaterscan be seen around the Island, especially at Maughold Head inthe north east. The species were so called after they were firstscientifically identified on the Island in the 17th century.

5p coin: The Laxey Wheel: Officially named Lady Isabella afterthe wife of the then Lieutenant Governor of the Isle of Man,the wheel was opened in 1854. It was designed by ManxmanRobert Casement to pump out water from the deep Laxeylead mine. It is the largest working waterwheel in the worldand measures 72ft. 6in. in diameter and 6ft. wide. There is aviewing platform at the top which is reached by an externalspiral staircase. It now forms the centrepiece of the ManxNational Heritage’s Mining Heritage Trail.

10p Coin: Triskeles. Known as the Three Legs of Mann, or inManx ‘Tree Cassyn’, this symbol is indicative of the 9th centuryNorse Viking settlement in the Isle of Man. Its introduction isattributed to Alexander III of Scotland after gaining controlfrom King Magnus in 1265. The three legged sun symbol hadbeen adopted by the ancient Sicilians and it was believed thatit was Magnus’s wife, sister of the King of Sicily, who firstintroduced the symbol to the Isle of Man. The officially adoptedGovernment version shows the legs running ‘sunwise’, that isclockwise, but there are many recorded cases where they runin the opposite direction.

50p Coin: Viking Longship. The 50p coin shows a Vikinglongship in full sail over an outline of the Isle of Man map. In1079 Godred Croven, ‘King Orry’, sailed his longships intoRamsey and up the Sulby River to a point below Skyhill. After aferocious battle on Skyhill, he routed the Manx inhabitants andhis dynasty continued to 1266. A commemorative plaque nowstands beside the track on the way up Skyhill.

Obverse: All the 1976 coins show the first profile portrait ofthe Queen as used on the first Manx decimal coins of 1971. Thebust was sculptured by Arnold Machin and, unlike later profilesof Her Majesty, it does not bear his initials.

Details of the Island’s later decimal coins will be featured infuture issues of Stamp and Coin News.
