Beach season reach, sec-ond only to costume sea-son for bikini body baring. Bathing suits are serious

fashion, and serious business these days too. We’re featuring four local designers in this issue (many more to be featured in the future). Look-ing to local fashion designers to dress us makes sense. They know what our needs are, which trends we have embraced, and understand our climate. Everyone should have several pieces by a local designer in their closet, but some-how that just isn’t happening. The root of this not-happening-ness is a pretty long debate. Is-landME is skipping all that and just attempting to be some part of a solution. Bringing designer to audience, that’s where we are. So take in the suits, the girls, the scenes AND the contact in-formation. Also, we’ve got more event coverage than ever before. Make sure to check out the much more expansive event albums, and even more events on our fb page, Islandme Maga-zine. Missed a fete? Stay ontop of what’s hap-pening via our “Events” section on our mobile phone App. We’ve realised that event calendars are needed outside of Carnival time, and ours has much more than just the fetes too.

SHADYSUMMERby Jennerlee Ramnarine

Living on an island we’ve got “summer” all year round; with the ex-ception of a little rain there is always the rays of beautiful sunlight to keep a smile on your face and a pair of sunglasses near-by. The

question is what shape and style should we choose to compliment our personalities whilst looking our ultimate best.More than following the typical trends my advice is to stick with some-thing that makes you comfortable yet does the job. Here’s five looks sure to keep you on point for Summer 2013:

AviatorsWill never go out of style. From back in the 60s

to the resurface in the 2000s, this shape gave Ray-Ban its name. As Rihanna says, “got my Ray-Bans on and I’m feeling hella cool

toniiiiiight”. Its sleek pilot-like look matches any facial structure and goes well with any outfit for both male and female, day into night.

Oversized Glam or Cat EyesLight and feminine. Vera Wang and Tom Ford

have these shapes in pink, floral or mint green. Try these this summer to add a different flavor

to your look whether it’s lunch with the girls, a party cruise or even a fabulous day of running errands.

Round and RetroThese “Harry Potter” inspired frames, presented

for example by Miu Miu, add spunk and seem to be heading for huge success in

2013. For a vintage inspired look take these frames out for a pool party, shopping, drinks, ice cream or even coffee. Handy for men and women alike.

The ClubmasterRay-Ban is reinventing a best seller. The style originated in the 50s, made its way back in 1998,

and has now returned in 2013, worth a try. Alu-minum matte, champagne, black and tortoise…

the colour combinations are endless. The unisex frame is comfortable and lightweight, basically a must-have.

StripeMy ‘out of the box’ pick. Dolce and Gabana has brought out a collection modeled after a Sicilian summer, reminiscent of sitting under parasols and watching the glistening light reflecting off the ocean. They come in different shapes so

finding one that fits your face well is an excellent possibility.

Selecting the perfect pair of sunglasses may be tricky but not impossible always remember to choose a style that’s your own and makes you most comfortable. I do suggest going with the brands I featured because of quality and durability, but being a fashionista on a budget myself I also enjoy purchasing from websites such as aldoshoes.com and forever21.com, as well from as local store like Bijoux Turner and Wonderful World.

Yes It’s Mine, I Paid For It

Hair extensions are a growing trend among the young… and not so young. They offer women

vogue and versatility. In fact, girls are more apt to push the fashion bounda-ries and experiment with wilder colours or more daring cuts, as it is not their real hair. If they don’t like a style, simply remove and replace with something more suitable.

Hair extensions can be fun and but they are not for everyone. If you suffer from hair loss (alopecia areata or similar) or have persistent scalp conditions, extensions may not be for you. They can cause the problem to get worse. Actually, if you wear exten-sions for too long, it may cause these very same problems so beware.

Well-trained hair professionals can steer you clear of such problems.

Your hair stylist will ensure the basic guidelines are followed:

Certified hair professionals should de-liver hair extensions, as any other hair process. Follow their advice, you can explore the wild and wonderful world of hair extensions. After all, don’t we all have a little crazy in us?

Scalp conditions are treated before proceeding, avoid worsening the condition.

A reasonable period of time is given after a treatment if needed.

After adding extensions, proper hair care products are prescribed so that healthy hair persists.

Cosmetologist Natalie Clarke is the owner of Tres Bien Hair Salon and School (868) 746-2166, and these hair tips are spon-sored by De Fabulous Hair Care products for people who want De Fabulous Hair.

COCOA J’ouvert in July

J’ouvert parties have become THE thing. We’re checking in with possibly the earliest

promoters of the mid-year idea, COCOA – J’ouvert in July, to find out how that happened, and how they keep theirs going.

They tell us that years ago they had a little tabanca for j’ouvert. They thought, “why not give ourselves, masqueraders, families and friends that Cocoa experience in mid year?” After a bit of research, they discovered that there were actually a lot of people who don’t play in J’ouvert at Carnival time, even though they’d really like to. Some didn’t feel safe, some didn’t find it affordable and others didn’t want to be tired for Pretty Mas.

So they designed COCOA...NICE PEOPLE, DIRTY FUN to solve all

those problems and in 2009 got started at Pier 2 Car Park, their base ever since.

12 | islandmemag.com

Page 13: islandME Mag Issue #4

Keeping it just like their Carnival J’ouvert band:

• Same J’ouvert time, 2:00 am - 9:00 am. • COCOA is the name of the game – being pasted the same

way (slight or heavy – your choice). • All-inclusive, but with a wider variety of premium drinks.

Also, because it is at a single venue, you can use great “shots” of every colour and description. Breakfast is also available with a wider choice.

• They might not go on public roads but they create lanes/roads within Pier2 so the party is on-the-move!

• Same faithful DJs. • Same security personnel, who know true Cocoa masquerad-

ers very well. Car Park provided within the compound for as many cars as possible.

• Professionally and securely constructed STAGE for mas-queraders to cross! An especially nice touch.

• When the sun rises you can partake in generous showers of water if you want to “cool down” or try and get the cocoa off.

Trinidadian designer Lisa Marie Henry began her fashion journey at a young age. With the

encouragement of her mother, she began courses at the John Donaldson Technical Institute to learn the art of dressmaking and tailoring at just 15 years old. At 21, with her sister Laurie Henry, ‘LisaLaurie’ designs was launched.

Together they showed collections throughout the Caribbean and also in London. At 25, Lisa migrated to the UK and pursued a career in costume design, working on projects for performers such as ‘The Saturdays’, whilst attending courses at London College of Fashion. On her return

to Trinidad in September 2012 she formed ‘Liilah’ designs which she describes as, “A collection of dresses, skirts, swimsuits and wraps that expresses the energy of the confident, cool Caribbean woman”. Liilah has since collaborated with Anya Ayoung Chee for ‘Fashion Rocks the Avenue’, where Liilah swimsuits were paired with Anya’s wraps and dresses.

Lisa operates out of the ‘Liilah’ workshop in Woodbrook, Trinidad. Inquiries and purchase orders can be sent to [email protected], or through the Liilah facebook page.

Kudos to the Kraze smartmen who took the weather into consideration and designed a casual, get-wet, cooler fete, for small money, food included. The heavens contributed to the rain, and boy did they dance. The video is insanity too.

JILLIONAIRE

illionaire (of Major Lazer) was once just Chris Leacock. Actually forget ‘just’, Chris was always a stand-out, from the burning bush-like hair, pumping Corner Bar (RIP), hosting “Pon the Corner” (look it up on youtube), and randomly showing up with MIA (yes, the international recording artist). We had a lil ketch up with “ya boy” pre-Zen gig.

Is Major Lazer gonna be like the Rolling Stones, touring in your golden years? We already in our golden years. I dunno how we gonna continue touring like this for the next album. We tryna do like the Monkees and just become a cartoon... watch us on TV... or maybe holograms.

What music are you listening to these days?Wild Belle – Isles. The-Dream - IV Play. The Dolls - Summer of 93. Holger – Ilhabela. Vampire Weekend - Modern Vampires of the City [hunting blood... blood]. Most of my listening is demos that kids send me. Look out for new work from F dot Stokes, Icy Lytes and Kid Infinity, among others.

Do you own a laser?I actually do own a laser harp. It’s a midi instru-ment with five or six lasers and when you pass yuh hand over it and break the laser it sends a midi trigger so you could play it. I give it to a chiney man to make it work for Coachella and all now he aint give me back. Thanks for reminding me though.

How do feel being the guy pushing Caribbean music worldwide right now? To be honest I just want to be anonymous, let the music talk. It was so gratifying to see Bunji Garlin in the Guardian UK up there next to Jessie Ware and other personal favorites. I just want to see the thing go globaler and globaler and globaler... yeah that is a word. I doh really study if is me do it or who do it.

Are local musicians being demanding of you? We’re being demanding of them! I jumbieing fellas right through. We have two tracks with Machel that finishing up for around Crop over time, and a thing with Shurwayne that we hoping could be a good summer banger for him.

You pulled up Machel at ultra on stage, but Palance is what was in the set. Was that really cool?REALLY COOL BRO. Actually Machel almost coast on me... cuz I was looking for him the whole time we were on stage and actually didn’t find him in the crowd ‘til Palance came on. So I’m gesturing to him to come up and them fellas watching me like what you doing boy... so yeah eventually he came up and that was the highlight of Ultra for me. Palance is still the biggest song we play every night in terms of crowd response. If we ever make a good soca we want it to be like dat!

Do you think you will ever live in T&T again?Yeah I doh see why not. I doh really live nowhere right now. I have a 36” trolley bag full of dirty clothes and daiz bout it.

Say whatever you want. In fact make up a question we should have asked you.Yeah my favorite roti is strimps den beef den boneless chicken in that order. If it aint have boneless I go take regular bone chicken. Or goat if it aint have beef.

3 TV Shows Finalesthat couldn’t come soon enough!

How much can happen to one hospital? Seriously, it’s been shootings and natural disasters in various forms, more than once… more than twice. How many times is Meredith going to fight for her life? Your Thursday nights are available again fellas, unless your girlfriend finds something real to cry about between 9 and 10pm

Even if you haven’t watched a single episode you know the name Olivia Pope and that she’s sleeping with the POTUS. How? Because facebook and twitter feeds were flooded with play by plays of each episode, then with the next day analysis and “i-can’t-believe-it” statuses. Some of us were turned off by the sheer fanaticism.

....................................................................................................................................................

It’s no Sopranos people. So excuse those of us who just don’t want to wait a week between episodes. Nope, we’re waiting for it all on DVD in one go. So stop it with the spoilers already, and especially stop demanding that everyone now read the books. We’ll get around to it when we dang well want to.

VIP tickets were less than general… true VIP, about who you know, very impressive. There’s a buzz that a “go pro” attached to a model helicopter is going to make post party footage as epic as the pre party fliers.

CORDCONTROLCordless, it’s coming… eventually. For the moment pretty much all of your electronic devices need to be plugged in at some time, either to operate (your TV) or be charged (your laptop). The mess of cords needs to be under control. Your solution is surprisingly bread based, don’t study the carbs.

Dealing with the length – Bread Bag Twisties.Get them out the pack of garbage bags too,

whatever. There isn’t a cheaper, more accessible solution to keeping cords coiled and in place.

Proudly display them instead – Designer cords. For this one you’ll need bread of a different kind, money. Paying

more for an accessory that comes free with devices isn’t so out there, now that the unique phone case craze has peaked, maybe

cords are next? Check out ‘Eastern Collective’ online to order.

Identifying which is which – Bagel Bag Tags.Weren’t these on bread back in the day too? Well, not again. The tags fit over the cords nicely and are easy to label, so you know what you can remove temporarily (not your modem) to plug in your flat iron.

Rhion says that even as a child he had the eye for fashion. He knew what looked good, especially on

a woman. Opening a retail fashion boutique in Woodbrook, Kraze Kollection, encouraged him to make the step into design. He started with a mini collection for events company, Caesar’s Army, that was well received and it’s been upward movement ever since.

Rhion doesn’t call them bathing suits, they’re body wear. He even says that deep down he often doesn’t want the pieces to touch the water. This collection, “Monroe”, was inspired by powerful women of the past who were never afraid to be sexy in their skin, like

Marilyn Monroe. “My interpretation of what they would have worn if they were of this generation, traveling to the Caribbean”.

He describes the Rhion Romany woman as independent, daring yet classy and confident. She is not afraid of risks, or if she is, in his pieces no one will see it. He wants ultimately to help women bring out an inner confidence that was maybe hidden before.

Search “Rhion Romany” on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. Website coming soon.

RECOGNISEDROWNINGMost people have never

witnessed a drowning, and way too many people have

and not known it. There are horror stories about children going under at pool parties with friends and adults nearby, sometimes feet away. How that happens might be the fault of Hollywood. TV and movies lead us to believe that drowning victims call for help, and they thrash their arms about. Not so, almost never. What you actu-ally need to look for is “Instinctive Drowning Response”, basically using all one’s energy to avoid suffocation.

Drowning people are unable to scream, because breathing comes before speaking. The mouths of drowning people are not usually above the surface long enough for an exhale, far less an inhale, to then call out for help. When a drowning person is able to get his/her mouth above water it’s spent giving a quick exhale and in-

hale, that’s it. Their face may not necessarily look panicked either, perhaps just focused.

Drowning people can’t control their arms like you might think. They’re a little busy and can’t just suspend their concentrated drowning avoidance to wave. Instinct forces their arms straight down to help them lift their mouths out of the water.

Baffled observers say they didn’t even see kicking, when there might have been lots of it. From beginning to end people’s bodies tend to remain upright in the

water, mouth up, so the controlled kicking is barely seen.

A person yelling for help and thrashing is experiencing aquatic distress. Unlike true drowning, these victims can still assist in their own rescue, grab a lifeline for example. But, it doesn’t last long, people can only struggle on the surface of the water for 20 to 60 seconds before submersion occurs.

Ask them if they are okay. If they can answer, they probably are. If you get a blank stare, you may have less than 30 seconds to get to them.

Parents—children playing in the water make noise. If they get quiet, find out why.

Know the signs:Head low in the water, mouth at water level

Head tilted back with mouth open

Eyes glassy and empty, unable to focus

Eyes closed

Hair over forehead or eyes

Not using legs—vertical

Hyperventilating or gasping

Appear to be climbing an invisible ladder

TV and movies lead us to believe that drowning victims call for help.

Harts took a step toward incorporating some of the flashy elements that dominate all inclusives’ launches. Basically, a stage show with the works! Masqueraders seem happy with the addition, and the event retains its staple status for the uptown set.

DE GANNESKELLY

Page 35: islandME Mag Issue #4

Kelly’s our rookie for this issue, both as a designer

and as a model. It all began for her with the disappointing fit of many swimsuits. She got her own sewing machine for Christ-mas last year and took matters into her own hands, trying different things, buying swim-suits and taking them apart to investigate the technique. Then she started getting com-pliments on the things she made. Last year she enrolled in the Art Institute of Ft Lauderd-ale to formally learn fashion design, she’ll graduate in December.

Her next step is to work in the US within the fashion industry. She plans to specialise in technical design, creating patterns on a computer. She says it’s not necessar-ily fun but she’s good at it, and more importantly it is the least popular as-pect of fashion design, which makes it much more likely that she’ll land a job.

She’s not in T&T but she knows what’s going on here, and even named Rhion Romany (also featured in islandME) among her favourite local designers.

She gave part credit to her dad for that, he sends her anything published about swimsuit designers. If you’d like to have Kelly make you a custom suit contact her at [email protected].

Toni Smart and Lynmerie Parris are reaching out to women who want to be successful and live

They recognize that the swimsuit is an important staple in the Caribbean woman’s lifestyle, many want to have a different piece for each day of vacation or something really special for an event. What they saw missing from the market was great options that take

advantage of the beauty, comfort and versatility of a whole piece swimsuit.

To show the world that in many instances a whole piece is far more appealing and sexy than the standard bikini is now their aim.

ANATOMYOF A POTHOLE

A pothole is simply a hole in the road. There are several species of varying depth, consistency of circumference and origin.

Trininidad and Tobago, world renowned for some of the widest varieties of flora and fauna, natural resources and people, is also well stocked with one of the largest varieties of potholes. Potholes usually develop naturally on roadways but have become so popular in T&T that state agencies have supported its proliferation. It is even suspected that a new tourist attraction is to be developed around the variety of potholes in Trinidad

as well as the pursuit of a place in the Guinness World Records.

Its natural development would usually involve wear and tear on a road surface, usually assisted by water logged conditions of the road subsurface and some other factors. In cold climates potholes blossom in spring with a richly waterlogged road subsurface from the melting snow and ice coupled with regular traffic flow on a well worn road. In the tropical climates like in T&T, general wear and tear on the road will give rise to potholes but it would usually not be as pronounced as in more developed cold countries with higher traffic flows and harsher climates.

Trinidad and Tobago, has worked to create the ideal environment for potholes to flourish despite their oil, pitch and aggregate resources, which would normally lessen the pothole population when used to standard. An efficient coordination of efforts between

by Aaron De Coteau

44| islandmemag.com

Page 45: islandME Mag Issue #4

state entities has provided the perfect “manure” for blossoming potholes. The water and sewage team ensures that work is scheduled to be done soon after a new road is paved, and provides just the right curing time before repaving the areas they have dug up. The two drainage teams, Regional Corp. and Works, maintain drainage systems that provide for maximum flooding even in short afternoon rains. This makes for rapid erosion and a waterlogged subsurface for the roads when there would normally little to none.

The teams have now begun experimen-tation with genetically engineered pot-holes. They can be identified by a metal plate to their base, otherwise called a manhole cover or another utility purpose piece of metal and are usually deeper than more naturally occurring potholes. In the early stages of their release in to the wild roadways these engineered potholes were forced to be marked and highlighted by a white marker painted around their edges. The liberation of the neo-Potholes movement fought for equal-ity and now they are allowed to populate the roadways like their more naturally

occurring counterparts without need for identification tags. Prior to this, motor-ists would openly restrict their tires from entering these neo-potholes. Now tires frequent the openings of neo-potholes without discrimination.

Much success is expected for the further development of the pothole variety in Trinidad and Tobago as its income generating potential is great. Downstream industries including the car sales, parts and repair industries stand to benefit immensely. As in all scenarios there are some risks and drawbacks. Though potholes can cause vehicular accidents, the point can be argued for slower driving and more consideration for one of our natural treasures. A Pothole is as Trinbagonian as a $350 ticket to pan that you won’t have the option to see or hear, but the lime sweeeet!

Our boat ride/cruise of the month is definitely this one. More women in bikinis than Long Beach, more foam supplied than Mecalfab and energy, energy, energy. Plus islandME shots, what could possibly beat that?

Quinoa It’s the latest health food going. It’s a kind of a grain (kinda) or seed (kinda) cooked like rice, that can take on what-ever flavour you add, and then eaten cold or hot. It’s better than oats, okay?

Instagram video Hey remember when Vine was a thing? You never got into it? Oh look Instagram has short video clips now…

Acrylic ornateThe potential garishness of rough gems is softened by all the pretty pastel colours of this summer jewelry trend.

Moët Ice Imperial Used to be if your flute of bubbly tin-kled when shaken, it was a maje faux pas. Not again, Moet gives us champagne made for our climate, de-signed to be poured over ice.

Yeezus & Magna Carta Holy Grail They both blaspheme with

the titles, but Jay and Kanye go their different ways after that. Yeezus got amazing reviews (9.5/10 on pitchfork) while Hov’s were mixed. Sales will de-cide ultimately, and we bought both.

Dominic Hutchinson was never good at anything until a special teacher, Mrs. Leonese Jerome,

persuaded him to try sewing class. He learnt very fast and passed with flying colours, but after graduation... He describes a community with financial struggles, single parent families and limers on the block selling drugs. He ended up doing bad things with bad company.

After a few years he realised that three quarters of his friends were either in hospital (having been shot), dead, or in prison. He decided to buy a small sewing machine and do odd jobs. Word spread that he was good. He saved money, got more equipment, registered his name as a business and decided to try swimwear. “I can really express my ideas through

colour, design and structure, not to mention it’s in high demand in T&T”. He eventually made a facebook page, and before he knew it he was getting invited to take part in fashion shows. Then came the call for Tobago Fashion Weekend, just 11 months into the industry. That changed his life drastically. “The very second I walked of the runway I had offers to show in New York, Miami, Toronto, Panama… orders as well!” Now there are offers to finance his label, even factories in Japan and India who want to fly him up.

See and purchase “HuTcH Beachwear by Dominic Hutchinson” on Facebook. Made to fit you, he manufactures out of his home studio, “House of HuTcH”, in Trincity.

ONECOOL THING

*

Aioli is the new kid of fine dining in T&T. It offers Mediterranean fare crafted by

chef and owner John Aboud, who has pretty extensive international experience but basically looks young enough to pass at an upper six Grad. There are a couple cool things at Aioli, including the name, but overwhelmingly the Jamón ibérico (Pata Negra) tops them all for our one cool thing. It’s ham, but possibly the most special ham in the world. First of all it’s only from the black Iberian pig, then there’s the rich acorn diet, then there’s the salting process, then there’s the curing process, then there’s the hugely impressive display (jamonera), and that it requires no refrigeration. Order it and you’ll actually get to see your slices coming off the leg, like we said it’s on display in

the dining room. Interactive. For those of you who haven’t tried it, especially prosciutto lovers, make a reservation at Aioli NOW.

This is not a review of the whole place, this is just one cool thing.*

Weighand PayEvery food court has one, dead plazas have been rejuvenated by a few.

Is it the speed? The variety of items? The perception that it’s healthi-er? Well… “cooked food” will almost always be a better choice than say, a hamburger (that’s a meal of “processed”, both the meat and the bun are full of things your body would prefer to reject), but take in some tips to keep the hidden calories out your styrofoam box.

Added bonus to all this healthy eating, a cheaper plate! The sauces weigh you down and add $$$.

ON AVERAGE, HALF THE MEAL SHOULD BE HIGH FIBER FOODS.

So imagine a plate.Half = salad + maybe some sauteed vegetables won't hurt.

Half = protein and carbohydrates. I would pick, lentils (extremely high in ber), maybe some grilled or baked sh or chicken, and my favorite, cassava.

Avoid the sauce. Meats with sauces are dripping with grease and are usually high in sodium. Saute-ed items (probably not in olive oil) tend to be a healthier choice than items with sauce and cheese. Go for anything baked or grilled.

Stress the green salad. Noth-ing’s added to it so it’s pure and healthy.

I have never seen a choice of brown rice, too bad. There’s likely parboiled rice, which means bleached with added nutrients. Plus lots of salt, vitsin, soy sauce, Maggie, etc. Also, stay away from macaroni pie! High in saturated fat!

Especially avoid stewed chicken, stewed anything. People, it’s burnt sugar and that’s basically toxic.

Avoid all the fried foods. When oil is heated beyond its smoking point, it becomes toxic to your body. So when these places use the same oil over and over again... at some point the oil is degraded and becomes carcinogenic. You’re basically eating something that will cause cancer if you over do it.

Especially try provisions and legumes. They are usually not cooked in some extremely un-healthy way and they’re packed with nutrients.

At one point you had to tie the rag you were given on entry onto your face for a group scheupps. Also you could deposit notes on things that piss you off into the enamel pissing pot. The art was impressive too, go check it out.

There’s a valuable conclusion here, it’s all about realistic goals. Pick your role models (literally) in stages, appropriate to what you can achieve within a reasonable time frame.

When you start a quest to lose weight, you probably have a picture

in mind. Maybe it’s yourself when you were 17, or Channing Tatum, or just his abs. Lots of us make an “inspirational” fitness pic our computer/phone wallpaper, some of us actually print it out and stick it on the fridge to combat cravings. Great idea. Actually no.

Researchers at Tilburg University in the Netherlands had women sign up for a weight-loss program, part of which was recording exactly what they ate in a diary. Half of the participants were given a diary with a skinny model on every page. The other half got just a logo. Dieters WITHOUT the model influence were able to lose weight. Those who took in the model’s image were not, and even slightly gained weight.

What if it wasn’t her skinniness? The researchers conducted a second experiment. This time there were the same model diaries for one group, but for the other group the diaries featured the same model altered to look average weight. Again, the skinny model caused dieters to gain.

You’ll see him soon in, ‘A Story About Wendy’ where he plays ‘Guy Lock-wood’, a sportscaster. Go ahead and laugh at the name, we did. It’s his biggest role so far, having completed acting courses in LA at John Casablan-cas, and appearing in music videos like Angie Stone’s ‘I Ain’t Hearing You’. His role was supposed to be small but it’s apparently grown. Hmmmmm. The director called him in after seeing local modeling spreads and told him on first sight, “You’re it!”

You could see him earlier, if you attend local plays and poetry readings. Garth is also a personal trainer and motivational coach, inspiring body and mind. This September he’s even looking to market the revised and expanded edition of his book, ‘The Journey Continues’.
