The Casey Key Fish House Restaurant is a great little place with a very relaxed atmosphere that is accessible by both boat and car. There’s full bar service along with a wine list to help round out your meal. With the friendly staff and good service, you can’t beat an afternoon or evening at The Casey Key Fish House. This is the kind of place you come to Florida for! Since 2000 the Fish House has brought a laid back attitude to Casey Key. With Old Florida in mind, proprietor Jimmy Von Hubertz and Master Chef Willie Tia offer a casual way to dine by the waterside, with prices that are more than reasonable. Beginning at 11:30 customers enjoy their

service. The lunch menu is wonderful with old favorites like “Fish & Chips” and Daily Lunch Specials. As afternoon becomes evening, the Fish House presents an extensive dinner menu. Customers rave about the Almond Snapper and Ahi Tuna. But bring your appetite if you want to be dazzled by Willie’s mouthwatering Bouillabaisse. This Bar and Grill is one of only a handful of waterfront restaurants left in Sarasota County. Located right on the

water, there’s a tiki bar, an open air dining room and an outdoor patio where you can see boats pass by on the Intercoastal Waterway and Dryman Bay. The spectacular view allows you to watch the wildlife as it passes by. You may spot dolphins, manatee, pelicans, snowy egrets, an occasional heron and maybe mullets jumping out of the water. The Tiki Bar was recently rebuilt by Seminoles (It’s actually a Chickee Hut), and is a great place to kick back with your favorite libation. There is live music every Friday, Saturday and Sunday making this an ideal place to release your inner Parrot Head. Open 7 days a week 11:30 a.m. – 9:00 p.m, Located at 801 Blackburn Point Rd Osprey, FL 34229 (941) 966-1901.

Directions: From Sarasota follow US 41 south to Osprey. At Blackburn Point Road, turn right (west) and follow it

House parking lot. (Location #13 on the Intracoastal Waterway Guide located on the back of the Souvenir Map) Coming by water? The Fish House is located at Marker 32 at the Blackburn Point Marina.

Siesta KeyPublic BeachLifeguards on duty

“The Best Sand Beach in America”Siesta Beach is renowned for its

breathtaking sunsets, easy-going waves, and gorgeous, crystal white sand. The sand is 99% pure quartz, soft and cool to the feet. Among the many awards it has earned are “The Whitest, Finest Beach Sand in the World” (The Great International White Sand Challange, 1987), “The Best Sand Beach in America” (The Travel Channel, 2004) and the best beach in contiguous 48 states (Dr. Beach, 2009).

Walking along, or swimming and playing in th Gulf of Mexico or merely basking in the tropical sun is enough fun for many folks, but others are drawn by Siesta Beach’s many amenities, which include tennis and vollyball courts, shaded playground and picnic/barbecue areas and convienent concession stands. Shallow water near shorline and year-round lifeguard protection make it a great family beach. Beach wheelchairs can be borrowed to help special needs visitors cross the sand.

There’s always something for everyone to do at Siesta Beach. It’s island location is within easy walking distance of the many village shops and restaurants located in the Siesta Village.

Crescent Beach offers the same lush, white sands, azure waters and stunning sunsets, but it is relatively secluded and quiet, as it has only one public access road. Located just south of Siesta Beach, the scene here tends to be more peaceful and private. At the southern tip of this beach is Point of Rocks - a lovely snorkeling and diving area that is rich with coral rock formations as well ascolorful and abundant marine life. Crescent Beach visitors staying in nearby resorts, rentals and beach clubs rave (but only to their closest friends) about Siesta Key’s best “non-private private” beach.

Turtle Beach is at the southern tip of Siesta Key, and affords a sportier, “family play” beach experience. The beach has picnic areas, a playground, a vollyball court and horseshoe pit. There’s also a boat launch,

Blind Pass Lagoon. There are restaurants nearby, with shopping and a few local night spots just a short drive away. Turtle Beach is a narrow beach, with a somewhat steeper incline. The sand on the beach tends to carry more shells, making it perfect for beach combers and shell

to take home and treasure, especially after a storm.

Eight short months after their grand opening, Pita Shack has expanded their shop to include a cozy outdoor patio allowing diners to enjoy their hearty and delicious pita sandwiches as they experience the laid back vibe of Siesta Key Village. Locally owned and unique to Siesta Key Village, The Pita Shack offers a variety of pita sandwiches that will take you beyond ordinary fast food to satisfy your hunger and stimulate your taste buds.

With 12 meat selections, 5 veggie selections, and 7 specialty selections

something for everyone here. Even the kids have their own menu to choose from. All pitas are available as “Pitaless Pitas” which are salads without the pita bread or you can order a Combo Meal which includes a fountain drink and bag of chips or cookie with your choice of pita sandwich. There certainly is no skimping on taste or quality in these big boys.

When asked about opening another restaurant on Siesta Key, owner, Thomas

Villani stated: “Siesta Key has needed a small, locally owned pita

style sandwich r e s t a u r a n t since I moved to Sarasota over 7 years

ago. The food on

the Key can be very expensive

and it’s n o t

unlikely for a person to spend almost $15 on an entree and drink at many of the great sit-down spots in the Village. We provide great food and a phenomenal price. Combos range from $7 to $8 and we do not cheat on quantity or quality. We bring the quirky, fun atmosphere that Siesta Key Village prides itself on and we pride ourselves as being a part of the Village.”

The Pita Shack is open 7-days a week, with hours until 3 am on Fridays and

Saturdays. As one of the only places to remain open after the famous Siesta Key bars close, you

ready to satisfy your late night hunger urge.

Located in the heart of Siesta Key Village, the Lobster Pot has been serving

tastes New England has to offer for 10 years. As the winner of numerous awards, the Lobster Pot was born from a dream the owner, Glen Medeiros had as a child. Growing up in Cape Cod Glen was introduced to the culinary arts at a tender age working in his father’s restaurant. It wasn’t until many years later, after honing his skills in various venues, that Glen’s dream of opening up a New England style seafood restaurant was realized. It became a family affair when sons Mark and Tony teamed together with mom and dad to pursue a location that would meet their needs. Since both sons grew up on Siesta Key, the choice was easy.

the Lobster Pot was awarded the “Taste of Sarasota” for their Lobster Pot Lobster Bisque soup, which delicately balances

broth and chunks of lobster meat. With more awards following over the years, Glen’s long awaited vision was well rewarded. In addition to the bisque, you will

is baked in the oven and will absolutely tantalize your taste buds. The full menu is available for both lunch and dinner.

With sons Mark and Tony working alongside their father Glen at the Lobster Pot since it was established, the heritage proudly carries on and will ensure

that another generation of happy visitors will partake in the taste of “Old Cape Cod” at The Lobster Pot in the heart of Siesta KeyVillage.

The Lobster Pot is open: Monday – Thursday: 11:30am – 9:00pmFriday – Saturday: 11:30am – 9:30pmSeasonal Sundays: 5:00pm – 9:00pm

Wine and food are both topics that have inspired millions of words – many of them heated. So it stands to reason that any discussion of pairing wine and food is bound to be incendiary. Naturally, that is the topic we plan to address here. People have been drinking wine while eating food for millennia, and probably arguing about which wine goes best with which chunk of meat as long as they have had more than one wine and more than one type of meat.

Things haven’t really changed much, it’s just that we have so many types of wine around and so many styles of cooking available that the whole thing has gotten a little out of hand. And yet the basics are really pretty simple. You want to pick a wine and a food that go well together,

food you hadn’t noticed and the food does the same for the wine. And, of course, the whole process should be enjoyable.

Everyone is probably familiar with the basic rule: White wine goes with white meat and red wine goes with red meat. By and large, this is still a pretty good rule. White meats, such as poultry and veal, have

taste. Red meat, such as beef or lamb, has

whatever it accompanies. White wine is also generally more subdued than red, and some red wines are themselves overpowering. Thus, white goes with white and red with red. Simple.

However …Some people just don’t like red wines and some “white” meat

stiff competition for anything trying to accompany it. Also, there is a recent trend in cooking to try and create complex variations in taste which means that the items that accompany such a dish should themselves have a complexity that will complement the chef’s creation. And then there are dishes like Mexican food and barbecue that seem to defy the traditional notions of wine-food pairing. So, what is a

person to do?The good news is that

the red-red and white-white pairing is still a good guide. However, it should be looked upon as a guide, not as a hard

and fast rule. There are some other guidelines that should be considered as well. For

e x a m p l e , s p i c y foods are often best

complemented with a wine that has a spicy taste itself. Hot spicy foods require a wine which can stand up to the heat and still be tasted. Foods with complex layers of taste fare best when paired with a wine that itself has some complexity. Finally, our overriding recommendation is don’t drink any wine you don’t like, even if someone

having. Now, let’s put these guidelines to work. We at the Crescent Beach Grocery carry a wonderful line of great steaks – New York strips, ribeyes and tenderloin. All of these are corn-and grass-fed beef and would be complemented by a good Cabernet Sauvignon, one that is strong enough to stand up to the meat and good

brings up another point. Really good food should be eaten with a really good wine. Chicken is another basic food that pairs

of our baked chickens would go very well with Pinot grigio. A more elaborate dish, such as chicken picatta, could be served with a slightly oaked chardonnay or even a sauvignon blanc. Chef Scottie also makes a signature dish called Swiss Bliss. This is a spicy, hot, tomatoe-y stew that is really delicious, especially with one of his twice-baked potatoes. Finding a wine that would not

Bliss could be a problem. A bold Merlot or a Petite Syrah should go very well with this dish. Scottie’s barbecue baby back ribs, on the other hand, cry out for wine that can cut through the sauce and spices and help you taste the meat. An old-fashioned red California zinfandel is a great wine for that

with the barbecue and an edge to it that cuts through strong sauces and rubs. Another dish that has become very popular lately is our lobster macaroni and cheese. This savory combination uses several different cheeses, lobster and other seafood to create a unique dish. Our customers like it as a side dish or as the main course. Either way, it has

most white wines. We think a pinot noir would make a good match for this dish, or maybe something a little more off-base like an Australian shiraz. Neither wine would overwhelm the lobster and both of

cheeses. Finally, what wine should you have to go with Mexican food? We’re sure you could get several thoughtful answers as to what is the perfect wine for tacos al carbon or fajitas. However, sometimes one just has to admit that maybe the perfect wine for an occasion is the wine of the country. In this case, that would be a refreshing Mexican beer!

FIRST PLACE WINNER:BEST New England Clam Chowder

To say we’re proud is an understatement. Going to Newport, RI to compete for the title of Best New England Clam Chowder was a long shot at best. Many thought we were “Nuts!” We constantly heard: “No matter how good the chowder is, the people of New England are not going to allow the title of “Best Chowder” to go to Florida!” They had history on their side, too. After 26 years of competition, only one other restaurant outside of New England had taken home the title. It’s kind of like a New York restaurant winning the “Best Grouper Sandwich” award at a Florida Seafood Festival.

We had faith though. We knew our chowder was the best, and we proved it to them. After two days and serving up over 120 gallons of our chowder to some 15,000 “chowder heads,” the people voted. Captain Curt’s Crab & Oyster Bar took First Place!

We believe winning is a testament to just how good our food is here at Captain Curt’s and to the dedication of our staff in preparing and serving it. During the festival, the staff truly “went the extra mile!” They worked hard to bring home the title. We are so proud and happy to have them. We couldn’t have won without their dedication and hard work!

Stop by Captain Curt’s today and enjoy the best New England Clam Chowder in the World! And meet the great people that brought the title home to Siesta Key!

For those of you torn between a dreamy sunset wedding on the water as the perfect backdrop to your special day, yet unable to break from the traditions of a church wedding, take heart. Sarasota is home to America’s only Floating Chapel. The beautiful Floating Chapel on the Bay combines a traditional setting with the natural beauty of Florida to create a completely unique and memorable wedding experience.

This stately vessel measures 60-foot by 30-foot and is powered by twin 125hp Cumming Diesel Engines offering celebration services during a one to two hour cruise on the Intracoastal waters between Sarasota and Anna Maria Island, Florida. It hosts ceremonies for weddings, vow renewals, anniversaries and more.

The Floating Chapel on the Bay features climate-controlled comfort for seating up to 100 guests. As the Chapel cruises to its destination, you and your guests can enjoy

panoramic views of the stunning Intracoastal Waterway out of tall windows topped

in the very private, on board salon, with its own bathroom and seating area.

Ceremonies aboard the Floating Chapel on the Bay are performed by a formally attired Captain (or

at each pew and at the podium. Also included in the celebration packages are recorded music, use of silk bouquet and boutonniere by the bride and

groom for the ceremony and a one-hour rehearsal the week prior to the wedding. The coordinators

for the Chapel will work tirelessly with you teaming up with a host of local businesses to accommodate special

locations as well as lodging.

Piqued your interest? Captain Jill & Captain Orca invite you to take a tour of their impressive vessel atwww.weddingsonwater.com or contact Captain Jill at 941-379-7327 for more information.

“Key Breeze,” a 41ft Morgan Sailing yacht, is your perfect choice for an intimate sunset wedding. US Coast Guard Master Captain Rev. Tim Solomon is also a licensed

service for the same cost as a simple sunset cruise.

Tim’s wife, First (Last and Only!) Mate Jan has been awarded both Siesta Key Business Person of the Year and the Greater Sarasota Small Business Award in the category of Woman Entrepreneurial Excellence. She is also noted for her photography, which has been featured in several magazines, and which is just another free service offered by this Key Sailing couple.

Tim and Jan have their own Sarasota Love Story. This sailing couple goes back three generat ions , as their grandparents

taught college together and their parents met at the same university seminary. Tim’s parents then pursued missionary work abroad while Jan’s family moved to Sarasota in 1960. Jan’s father is also the namesake of the Chaplain Hamel bay front park from which the Key Breeze sets sail, with the “Key to the City” on board. In 1973 Tim’s family returned to visit, and Tim immediately fell in love with both our white sand and hometown sailor. And the rest, as they say, is, “History.”

Dubbed Sarasota’s “Love Boat” by the television show’s producer, the Key Breeze has been the venue for both national television and a major motion picture.

I’ve always thought that there was something special about living on a tropical island. I imagined going to work in shorts and a casual shirt everyday and thought it would be like a nonstop vacation.

What we found was that the simplistic wonder of waking up to balmy breezes everyday and having the warmth of the sun kissing your back as you walk or bike to work is something that must be experienced. Coming from Wisconsin (I admit I’m a cheese-head) I don’t think we will ever take these near perfect conditions for granted. And yes, wearing

shorts and a casual shirt everyday really is just like a nonstop vacation for me. Are there any bad days in paradise? I’m sure there are, but for us we’ve stopped searching for that perfect place because we’ve found ours right here on Siesta Key. It’s so close to the

places to shop both on and around the island. The casual and friendly attitudes of the islanders make us feel like we’ve just come home.

If you’ve been thinking about buying a paradise getaway, now is the time for some great deals. Talk to any one of our many real estate agents and see for yourself. You, too,
