Breaking Even On 787s Boeing is reportedly looking at how it can use less titanium, one of the signature materials in its 787s, as it works towards breaking even on the aircraft. The manufacturer currently loses around USD23 million on every 787 that leaves the factory, reports Reuters. Commercial jetliners typically lose money in the early years of produc- tion and Boeing has pledged to break even this year. With titanium costing around seven times more than alu- minium, Boeing has apparently been looking at ways to cut down on its use. Travellers Ripped Off A number of Perth travellers are reportedly out of pocket after Fre- mantle-based Sky Air Services travel agency didn’t follow through with bookings. Many travellers arrived at the airport to find their flights had either been cancelled due to non-pay- ment or not booked altogether, whilst a sporting group were left stranded in Europe and forced to find alternative arrangements home. Tourism is Nepal’s largest source of foreign income, with more than 40% of the 800,000 annual visitors taking in trekking and adventure activities. However, Intrepid says tour operators looking for reassurance on safety in the Annapurna region have had to rely on anecdotal evidence to date. A report just out from earthquake engineering firm Miyamoto Inter- national has confirmed the iconic Annapurna region sustained ‘very little damage, with the 3% of buildings which were damaged in the quake all easily repairable’ advises Intrepid. “The aim of the report was to develop an overall understanding of the extent of the damage from the earthquakes so that we could assess the safety of the region’s trekking routes,” says Mi- yamto chief executive Kit Miyamoto. The assessment is said to be the first completed by international earth- quake engineering specialists on trekking routes in Nepal, and the rec- ommendations include opportunities to manage potential hazards not as- sociated with the Apr and May quakes. “Annapurna is ready to open for busi- ness,” Miyamoto said. “The report highlights areas where organisations can help Nepal rebuild stronger than ever. We now have the information needed to take action. ” . . . Personal Account Like many other operators, Intrepid’s Wade says the company has seen a ‘significant’ slump in bookings since the quake. “There’s been speculation about the condition of the treks, but we believe that the industry needed a proper assessment to make decisions based on facts,” he adds. Wade is recently back from Nepal and told Travel Today the situation was ‘surprisingly normal in many ways’, with Kathmandu bustling with an energy about it. “But the deeper you look, the more you realise there is still a lot of work to do for the country to rebuild,” says Wade. “The people are still fearful partly due to the ongoing presence of aftershocks, and partly from wondering what will happen to their livelihoods if tourism doesn’t return to normal.” . . . Support Not Scare “The best thing agents can do is not to scare their clients away from Nepal, but rather encourage them to visit,” Wade told Travel Today. “By doing this people are not only supporting the locals by way of their visit, but if they book with Intrepid they will know that all profits from their trip will be donated to aid organisations that will help rebuild Nepal.” Report Gives Nepal Safety Nod

Innovative Travel recently hosted a group of agents on CroisiEurope’s six-day Discover the Bordeaux Wine Region cruise, in a bid to shine a light on what the company can offer Kiwi tourists. Innovative Travel’s escort and groups manager Lynda Morrison says the group enjoyed the world famous food and wine region of France, whilst taking in the chateaux, architecture, historic sites and of course, wineries. A highlight, she says, alongside the warm weather and not having to un-pack a bag every day, was the chance for the group to debrief at the end of the day, whilst relaxing at the back of the ship. Other memorable moments included a stop in the village of Bourg, a guided tour of the underground monuments at St. Emilion, a walking tour of ‘old’ Bordeaux and more.Plus, the agents made the most of the all-inclusive fares, with all meals and drinks included. “There’s no hidden extras,” she says. “Croisi is a great af-fordable cruising company, and it’s

South Australia is the latest itinerary to be announced in the Air New Zealand/Virgin Australia Great Aussie Escapes agent famil programme. This famil is designed to give agents a taste of the state’s diverse tour-ism offering, utilising the non-stop NZ flights between Auckland and Adelaide. “The great thing about South Aus-tralia is that everything is so close to Adelaide,” says the South Australian

Tourist Commission’s Stacey Cant.Highlights on this famil include a day tour to Kangaroo Island where those on the trip will have the chance to get up close to the incredible nature and wildlife on the island as well as sampling the flavours of the Island. For a change in pace, the group will head to the Murray River and step back in time on one of the popular Unforgettable Houseboats, PS Mur-ray Princess. The state is also synonymous with fine cuisine and wine, so next stop is a visit to the Barossa Valley. “Agents will need to loosen their belt buckle and sit back with a glass of Barossa Shiraz, incredible food and wine and soak in the surrounds,” says Cant. The trip finishes with a couple of days in Adelaide, to explore the lane-way bars and eateries, taste their way around the Adelaide Central Market and take in the beachside suburb of Glenelg. The famils are offered in conjunction with the Australian state and terri-tory tourism offices. Can’t Win ‘Em AllThe online review site Yelp has revealed the disappointing discover-ies of some travellers. New York’s Statue of Liberty wasn’t enough to impress one ‘proud American’, who was ‘grossly underwhelmed by Old Lady Liberty’. Meanwhile, one travel-ler struggled to find anything posi-tive about the Eiffel Tower, saying it is ‘crowded, overrated and ugly from up close’. The Grand Canyon would have been better for one traveller if there were Segway rentals. “As amazing as the views are it is really kind of bor-ing”, they said. And one traveller who visited Rio de Janeiro’s Christ the Redeemer statue wasn’t sure ‘what all the fuss is about’. There really is no pleasing everyone.
