IITS Offering To Help Malnourished Guatemalan People Our July 3 communion offering will help indigenous Guatemalan people, who have one of the highest child malnutrition rates in the world. Guatemala's rural areas have faced deteriorating political and economic situations for years. Over 50 percent of the population live in extreme poverty, unable to afford basic sustenance or produce their own food. A stagnant economy has hampered productive capacity of rural communities, decreased quality of life, threatened natural resources, and displaced cultural practices that create greater cohesion and social well-being for the community. Faced with few viable options, hundreds of thousands of family farmers, the majority of whom are men, have migrated to the U.S. in search of employment and survival. That migration has left Guatemalan women in rural communities to care for the children and elderly and search for ways to feed them. The precarious economic and nutritional situation of Solol's largely rural and indigenous population has its roots in centuries of marginalization from political participation and land rights. Mayan women from six Solol communities approached Grassroots International, a global movement for social change, with a proposal to restore livelihoods, lands, seeds, nutrition, and viable Mayan communities. Agronomists are training 40 women in agro-ecological (organic, sustainable and local) farming. The women will establish communal and backyard vegetable gardens and train about 850 more women in their communities. The people will benefit from an improved diet thanks to the nutritious, organic vegetables, and fruits from the gardens, and they will be able to generate extra income by selling surplus produce. Women have begun to analyze other ways to use their own resources to improve their backyard animal and vegetable production. They have become conscious of their own value as contributors of income and food to their families’ wellbeing. Please prayerfully considering giving through Global Ministries of the United Methodist Church on July 3 to help these courageous women help themselves and their communities. IITS Offering To Help

Malnourished Guatemalan People Our July 3 communion offering will help

indigenous Guatemalan people, who have one of the highest child malnutrition rates in the world. Guatemala's rural areas have faced deteriorating political and economic situations for years. Over 50 percent of

the population live in extreme poverty, unable to afford basic sustenance or produce their own food.

That migration has left Guatemalan women in rural communities to care for the children and elderly and

search for ways to feed them.

Our sympathy and

condolences go to:

The family of Louise MacCartney Biel, who died on June 16, 2016, in Austin, Texas, her residence since 2005. Louise and her husband Bill (who preceded her in death in 2007) were charter members of Island in the Son UMC. A memorial service was held in Austin on June 24, with a graveside service at Seaside Memorial (4357 Ocean Drive in Corpus Christi) at the Biel family plot planned for July 15 at 2:30 PM. “Billy” and Louise are pictured here from a 2002 IITS membership directory.

Third Sunday Potluck Luncheon After worship on July 17, 2016

Can you believe it's July? This year is flying by too fast! We will resume our potluck this month. Since we are in the depths of hot weather, let's try something different.

Search your recipes and bring a SALAD. It can be chicken salad, pasta salad, veggie salad or some type of

dessert salad— and bring the RECIPE to give to the ladies of UMW for their upcoming cookbook. If you don't have a salad to share, feel free to bring anything for the

potluck. See ya July 17 for the next potluck— ALL are invited! ~Kathy Bassett, Hospitality Chair

Dear Friends in Christ,

Labor Day weekend, September 3-5, will mark the 33rd year that Kingdom Kamp has been offered to mentally challenged adults in our conference. As our brochure states, “Kingdom Kamp is an overnight retreat for physically mobile special needs adults 18+ that want to make new friends and memories while they share their love for Jesus Christ!”

As dean of the camp, I am writing to request three things of you and your congregation:

Be in prayer for this camp that has touched the lives of campers and staff alike.

Take a special offering in your church for Kingdom Kamp and send to the Conference Treasurer. Our Advance Special is #2005.

Share our need for more campers, especially males! If you know of people in your church or community that would enjoy this unique camping experience, please let me know and I will make sure they receive a brochure; or they can access the information at riotexas.org/kingdomkamp.

Kingdom Kamp will be at Cathedral Oaks Retreat Center near Weimar, Texas, which we have found to be an ideal place for our camp and campers. Please call or email me if you would like to know more about Kingdom Kamp.

Thank you for your prayers and support of this ministry!

Grace and peace,

Rev. Nancy Day, Buda United Methodist Church
