Geechee Gullah speaking and Charleston

native, Gervonder Brown, presents the

Island Gal, stories and experiences from

being raised on the Sea Islands of

Charleston, SC. Gervonder has been performing in the Geechee-Gullah tradition first

as a singer with the Rural Mission Prayer Band led by Ms. Linda Gadson and then as a

singer at the Caw Caw Interpretative Center in Ravenel, SC with Mrs. Sharon Cooper-

Murray. While attending college at Winthrop University, she noticed on her visits

back home that the language and traditions of her people was not being embraced by

the younger generation because it was often associated as “broken” English.

Recognizing the rich culture of her people, Gervonder made it her mission to educate

others on the Geechee-Gullah people. Gervonder travels throughout the state to

various churches, businesses, schools, and college campuses educating her audience

on the Geechee Gullah People through an interactive presentation. "Island Gal" was

developed from hearing her mama say "we going on the Island gal" as a way to motivate

her to finish up whatever task she was working on so the family could travel for a day

on the Island, mainly at her Aunt Helen's house. The presentation includes songs,

storytelling, Gullah sayings and customs, in a fun and interactive way!
