Islamorada is known as the Sportfishing Capital of the World, and for good reason. Our perfect location enables the large local charter fleet to guide anglers into diverse habitats. Fishermen can go after their prey in the deep waters of the Atlantic, chase them on top of an underwater sea mountain, or reel them in from the reefs. For a different experience, anglers can board a flats boat and head into shallow waters of the Florida Bay in search of the legendary grand slam.

The Keys are home to the third largest barrier coral reef system in the world making Islamorada

historic coral rock home.

Visit a museum where you can learn about legends of the deep, or the his-

tory of the Keys. Other attractions include a 17-acre marine mammal park and various marinas where visitors can feed tarpon, known affectionately as the Silver King. If you want to while away a lazy day under the sun, rent a sailboat or simply unfold a lounge chair at a local beach and dip your toes in the water.

a mecca for divers and snorkel-ers. Our many dive/snorkel shops ferry the experienced and novice alike to reefs and underwater wrecks, where they’re sure to see an assortment of colorful fish and corals. Closer to shore, kayakers and paddleboarders can enjoy calm waters as they make their way between open seagrass meadows, mysterious mangrove tunnels, bird rookeries and historic islands.

The adventure-minded can swim with a dolphin or try out jet skiing, kiteboarding, windsurfing, a water powered jet pack or view the islands

Islamorada Plants and TreesRoyal PoincianaSome say this is the world’s most colorful tree with fern-like leaves and flamboyant display of scarlet or orange-red flowers, often called the “fire tree.” It is a fantastic shade tree because of its tall but elegant, wide-spreading umbrella-like canopy.

Gumbo LimboComically referred to as the “Tourist Tree” because its bark is dark red and peeling like the skin of sunburnt tourists. One of the most hurricane-resistant trees, they were planted to serve as wind protection.

Palm TreesPalm trees are associated with sun, sand, vacations and the relaxed lifestyle in the Florida Keys. There are about 2,600 species of palm trees, almost all of which can be grown in Florida.

BougainvilleaNothing is more breathtaking than a bougainvillea in

full bloom with its spectacular color. This thorny ornamental bush has colorful flowers in pink, magenta, purple, red, orange, white or yellow, and the colorful

petals are actually leaves called bracts.

Key LimeBest known as the flavoring ingredient in

Key Lime pie, this citrus species is a shrubby tree with many thorns. Its fruit is

in a class all its own and ranges in size from ping -pong to golf ball.

HibiscusThese eye-catching flowers attract

butterflies, bees and hummingbirds. They are used to make tea and other beverages, and also represent nations as the national

flower of several countries.

TabebuiaPrimarily used for lumber, these trees are best known for their showy vibrant yellow flowers which look like trumpets and are an important source of nectar for hummingbirds and bees.

Sophistication meets Keys charm when it comes to the Islamorada dining scene. Whether you’re looking for an elegant dinner or a casual Tiki bar where flip-flops and pets are embraced, you’ll have no problem finding it here.

Naturally, seafood is Islamorada’s biggest dining draw along with spectacular Florida Keys waterfront views. Restaurants throughout our four islands serve a wide array of local catch including mahi mahi, grouper, tuna, hogfish, yellowtail snapper, swordfish and more. Visi-tors from August through March will be treated to delectable spiny lobster, pulled fresh from the ocean. Florida stone crab claws, a true delicacy, are featured on menus during their October through May season. A must have!

Islamorada is known as the Sport-fishing Capital of the World. And if you have your own successful day with hook and line, many restaurants will be happy to cook your catch for you, locally known as

Dining& Pubs

“hook ’n’ cook.” Travel by boat to reach your favorite dining spot… it’s the way of the islands.

Islamorada’s dining ranges from stylish gastro pubs and refined steakhouses to ethnic offerings including Italian, Spanish, Greek, Mexican, and Cuban food, as well as fresh local sushi. Sipping signa-ture drinks from a whiskey or rum bar at the end of the day is a great way to relax and unwind.

Experience cool sea breezes at breakfast time as the sun rises over the Atlantic Ocean. Choose from classic diners, a French-Canadian bakery, quaint coffee houses and upscale cafes. For lunch, you don’t have to change out of your swimsuit and sandals to take in a waterfront view while biting into a tasty fish sandwich.

Sit outside and watch the sunset on Florida Bay while enjoying wine and dinner at one of several bayfront eateries. Or put on your “Keysey” best and move indoors for a romantic, candlelit dinner. While on vacation, it is perfectly acceptable and often essential, to indulge in the sweet temptation of a decadent dessert, and leading the list as the local favorite is our world famous Key Lime pie prepared using native Key Limes.

Sounds of beach music fill the air such as steel drum, hillbilly flamenco, trop-rock, blues, country, or island grass to name a few; while live entertainment including fire dancers, magicians, and custom palm frond artists often accompa-nies the dining experience.

What’s so special about dining in Islamorada?

Stone Crab Claws are a very popular Florida seafood. These crabs have the unusual ability to regrow their claw when harvested by a trapper (only taking the largest claw). Stone crabs can be served hot or cold and pair perfectly with a creamy mustard dip. Stone crab season is October 15 - May 15.

Key Lime Pie is a favorite dessert for locals and tourists - it is made from Key Lime juice, egg yolks and sweetened condensed milk. Key Limes trees are found throughout the Florida Keys. The Key limes are more tart and more aromatic than the more common Persian limes. Key lime juice is pale yellow.

Florida Spiny Lobsters are known for their sweet, tender meat. They are delicious grilled or baked and a popular item on local menus. The official lobster season is August 6 - March 31.

Fish and Shrimp Tacos. With a huge variety of local fish and Key West pink shrimp available, tacos are a natural pairing. The bold and flavorful spices make this Keys dish a must try for lunch or dinner.

Hook ’N’ Cook. Islamorada is known as the Sportfishing Capital of the World, and once you have been out on the water and caught your fresh fish many local restaurants are happy to cook it for you in a plethora of styles. Yummy memories!

Conch Fritters are a traditional Bahamian recipe that is made with conch, a wonderful shellfish that is delicious but very hard to find. Many chefs add their own special spice mix to keep their recipe unique. They are good for lunch, dinner or a laid back afternoon snack. Easy to find on local menus.

Lobster Bisque is a delectable blend of sweet lobster and spices. This smooth and creamy soup is made with Florida Keys Spiny Lobster. As an appetizer or a meal, lobster bisque is always a delicious choice.

Smoked Fish Dip is a very popular smooth spread served with crackers, bread or fresh vegetables. King, Spanish mackerel, or amberjack are excellent for the smoker and make a great base for Smoked Fish Dip. Served at many local restaurants as an appetizer, or it can be bought in bulk at local seafood markets.

The four islands of Islamorada are a linear treasure trove of unique shops and galleries. You’ll be mesmerized by wood carvings, fused glass, fine oils and acrylics in Islamorada’s galleries featuring the works of our local island artists as well as a world class selection of outstanding boutiques and jewelry shops.

The northernmost key in Islamo-rada, Plantation Key, is the perfect place to start your shopping extravaganza. Boutiques and specialty stores with a waterfront boardwalk await you at Casa Mar Village. Meander along and enjoy the view at this colorful collec-

Shoppingtion of seaside shoppes - do a paddleboard demo or purchase fresh caught fish from the seafood market.

A bit further south, still on Plantation Key, you’ll enjoy the waterfront Bahama style shopping experience at Old Conch Harbor where souvenirs and decorative items are offered in the open air market. Plantation Key is also home to the Wildlife Gallery at mile marker 88.9 where you’ll find exquisite wood sculptures, hand-made circle hook pendants and life-like nature inspired paintings. The Rain Barrel, a quaint respite for travelers is where you’ll find “Betsy” the giant lobster, a favorite photo stop, as well as an artisans’ cove of souvenir and gift shops, a pottery studio and original art galleries.

Travel over Windley Key and enter Upper Matecumbe Key. Many of the shops here stretch along a

walkable section known as the Morada Way Arts District, where the streets come alive on the third Thursday of each month for the evening Walkabout. One-of-a-kind jewelry stores, galleries and boutiques line a breezy expanse of the island on the oceanside.

On the bayside you’ll be tempted by handmade island-style driftwood clocks, amazing under-water acrylic masterpieces, brilliant fused glass, and tropical inspired paintings in an array of galleries. Also on the bayside, Village Square at the Trading Post is comprised of eclectic shops and boutiques. The lush tropical landscape of Upper Matecumbe Key is also dotted with unique stand-alone shops and clothing boutiques offering every-thing for the tourist, the home-

maker and the outdoor adventurer in your life.

Indian Key Fill, bordered by our famous turquoise waters, marks the transition still further south to our fourth island, Lower Matecumbe Key, where the seaside atmosphere takes you back to a simpler time at Robbie’s Marina. An unusual blend of local art, conch crafts, jewelry and collectibles fill the Old Florida style shops and stands you’ll find here.

Islamorada’s histor y spans more than 3,000 years and represents a fascinating stor y of nature’s power and human courage in an island paradise. The Matecumbe Historical Trust is a non-profit organization dedicated to the education, histor y and preser va-tion of the Florida Keys; free information is available by calling or visiting online.

The Trust created the Heritage Monument Trail: Markers and descriptive plaques are located throughout the islands marking sites of historical interest, and a colorful self-guided tour brochure is available, mapping the locations of the markers and giving a brief histor y of each.

HISTORICISLAMORADA

THE HIGHWAY THAT GOES TO SEA

The Florida Keys Overseas Highway, from Mile Marker 110 to Mile Marker 0, was designated All-American Road in October 2009. The Keys

highway is the only All-American Road in Florida. It's the highest recognition possible under the

National Scenic Byways program established by the U.S. Congress in 1991. Only 30 other

roadways in the nation have earned the prestigious title.

It’s been called “the Highway That Goes to Sea,” “the most spectacular highway in the U.S.” and even

“the Road to Paradise.” It’s the kind of road that not only gets you some place but also takes you

somewhere, sealing its reputation as a destination unto itself. And the only place where

you can dip your toes in the Atlantic Ocean then walk across the road and

dip your toes in the Gulf of Mexico.

Enjoy the drive!

Whether you’re looking for an elaborate fairytale wedding, a ceremony at sea or an intimate barefoot affair on the beach, our wedding experts are ready to make your dreams come true.

In Islamorada, couples have the luxury of choosing from among a wide variety of wedding plan-ners, photographers, event rental

shops, florists, invitation designers and entertainers. An extensive selection of local caterers special-ize in extraordinary cuisine and wedding cake designs. Many of our resorts and vacation rentals regularly assist with and play host to weddings and recep-tions. Islamorada’s collection of outstanding salons and spas are in the business of putting those perfect wedding day touches on the bride and her attendants.

In fact, once the “I do”s are over, the bride and groom might just want to hang around for a while. As many have already discovered, Islamorada is an exceptional place for a honeymoon as well. The Knot magazine ranked Islamorada third in honeymoon destinations behind Venice, Italy and Paris, France.

Page 57: Islamorada Visitor Guide

Islamorada is an outstanding town in which to live, work and play. The Atlantic Ocean is our front yard, the Everglades and Florida Bay are our backyard, and water-related tourism is our main industry. Incorporated as a village in 1998, Islamorada is comprised of four islands; Plantation, Windley, Upper Matecumbe and Lower Matecumbe Keys. They span 20 linear miles and are home to a full-time population of 6,500. Village residents don’t pay state income taxes and they also enjoy property taxes that are well below those encountered on mainland South Florida.

Mariners Hospital, part of the outstanding Baptist Health net-work, anchors the area’s health services.

Area ServicesThe highly ranked Monroe County School District has a high school, elementary/middle school, charter school and Christian school in the village.

The Florida Keys Electric Co-operative provides Islamorada with a reliable power system at a price that is among the lowest of Florida’s power cooperatives. Fresh water is pumped to Islamo-rada from the mainland by the Florida Keys Aqueduct Authority, a state-backed utility that is run locally in the Keys. The village runs its own wastewater utility.

Bike paths span most of the town. The village’s crown jewel, Found-ers Park, houses a beach, ball fields, tennis courts, an Olympic-sized swimming pool and marina. The village also maintains several

smaller parks, plus Islamo-rada is home to three state parks. Lignumvitae

and Indian Key state parks are only accessible by water.

Low crime, a steadily improving real estate market, small-town camaraderie and excellent public amenities are other reasons that Islamorada residents enjoy a superb quality of life.
