In Almaty the world’s most modern architecture goes hand in hand with the magnificent nature masterpieces, and traditions exist in harmony

with modernity

One of the many interesting things about Almaty is its nature. I kid you not, here we have it all: forests, steppes, mountains, lakes, rivers, and even our very own Canyon.

And just a quick history fact. “Almaty”, or “Alma - Ata” means “Grandfather of Apples”. I think you know where this is going. That’s right – the apple tree originated in Almaty mountains in 8000 B.C.!

Kazakhstan is great country! I have never met such a lot free-minded people like there. Everyone is nice, smiling all the time and everyone has a lot of time for everything. People there lives in “reggae tempo“ of life. When you have meeting somewhere at 5 p.m. everyone is there at 6.30 p.m. and no one is angry because of beeing late. This was my first experience with Asia country and I was absolutely impressed when I came there. All people were so nice, friendly and helpful and there was no stress. By the way girls in this country are wonderful=)

When I arrived to Almaty, the first question that popped into my head was “Am I still in Portugal?” I

mean, aside from the huge mountains and the architectural differences in some buildings, Almaty

is very similar to my country, especially in the cultural aspects. Some examples of the similarities between Portugal and Kazakhstan are the fact that

Kazakh people also love meat, also listen to the song “Ai se eu te pego” of Michel Teló (this was a

huge surprise for me, especially because this song is sung in Portuguese language), and also are fans of

football (when I tell people I’m Portuguese, the most common response is “Cristiano Ronaldo”).

I’ll never forget happened when two of our students decided to learn by themselves how to greet the

interns in their own languages (Portuguese, Czech and Slovak); it was a huge surprise when they asked

me “Como tem passado?” (How have you been?).

“All the different experiences I’ve been living during the last month lead me

to the conclusion that Kazakhstan is a country of

contrasts”. Helder Silva

I spent 6 amazing weeks in Kazakhstan. The people and the culture were incredible. Working with Kazakh children was joyable ,funny and unforgettable. They have treated me as a aunty or sometimes as a mother.I fought with my weaknesses, started new friendships I even was crying when my children went home(and I didn’t know that I’m so sensitive) I saw that I can do a lot of things which I didn’t even dreamed of. People

working on this project were very helpful , nice and funny ,really good team. To sum up I just want to say that this vacation was the best in my life and I hope I will have the chance to

come back to Kazakhstan and to meet with all the people.

We all were like a HUGE family!
