NATIONAL FOREWORD

This Indian Standard which is identical with ISO 509: 1996 ‘Pallet trucks — Principal dimensions’issued by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) was adopted by the Bureau ofIndian Standards on the recommendation of the Material Handling Systems and Equipment SectionalCommittee and approval of the Mechanical Engineering Division Council.

The text of ISO Standard has been approved as suitable for publication as an Indian Standard withoutdeviations. Certain conventions are, however, not identical to those used in Indian Standards.Attention is particularly drawn to the following:

a)

b)

Wherever the words ‘International Standard’ appear referring to this standard, they shouldbe read as ‘Indian Standard’.

Comma (,) has been used as a decimal marker in the International Standards, while inIndian Standards, the current practice is to use a point (.) as the decimal marker.

The technical committee responsible for the preparation of this standard has reviewed the provisionsof the following International Standard referred in this adopted standard and has decided that it isacceptable for use in conjunction with this standard:

hternational Standard Title

ISO 6780:1988 General-purpose flat pallets for through transit of goods — Principaldimensions and tolerances

This standard supersedes IS 5007:1988 ‘Hand pallet trucks — Dimensions (first revision)’.

For the purpose of deciding whether a particular requirement of this standard is complied with, thefinal value, observed or calculated, expressing the result of a test or analysis, shall be rounded off inaccordance with IS 2 : 1960 ‘Rules for rounding off numerical values (revised)’. The number ofsignificant places retained in the rounded off value should be the same as that of the specified valuein this standard.

1 Scope

Indian Standard

HAND PALLET TRUCKS — DIMENSIONS

This International Standard specifies the principal di-mensions for pallet trucks for transporting flat palletscomplying generally with ISO 6780 and their loads.

The dimensions apply to the heights, widths andlengths of the fork arms of pallet trucks which mayhave either single or tandem trail wheels.

It should not be inferred that the use of a particularsize of pallet truck is restricted to one particular size ofpallet.

NOTE 1 The pallet dimensions shown in figure 2 areinformative only and are given in anticipation of anamendment to ISO 6780 of the entry dimensions of fullperimeter base pallets as defined in ISO 445. Theamendment is intended to bring ISO 6780 into line withexisting practice.

2 Normative reference

The following standard contains provisions which, through reference in this text, constitute provisions ofthis international Standard. At the time of publication, the edition indicated was valid. All standards aresubject to revision, and parties to agreements basedon this International Standard are encouraged toinvestigate the possibility of applying the most recentedition of the standard indicated below. Members ofIEC and ISO maintain’ registers of currently valid inter-national Standards.

ISO 6780:1988, General-purpose flat pallets forthrough transit of goods — Principal dimensions andtolerances.

3 Truck dimensions

3.1 Fork arm heights

3.1.1 In the unloaded condition and in the loweredposition the fork arm height dimensions of pallettrucks shall be as follows:

a) the distance between the underside of the forkarms and the ground, F (see figures 1 and 2), shallbe a minimum of 30 mm;

b) the height of the fork arms from the ground at thepoint of entry, G, (see figure 1), shall be amaximum of 86 mm:

c) the height of the fork arms from the ground at theheel of the truck, G2 (see figure 1), shall be amaximum of 90 mm.

3.1.2 In the unloaded condition and the raisedposition, the fork arm height dimension of pallettrucks shall be such that the height of the top surfaceof the fork arms from the ground, H (see figure 1),shall be a minimum of 185 mm.

3.2 Fork arm widths

3.2.1 Distance between fork arms

For” pallet trucks, the distance between fork arms, E(see figure 1), shall be a minimum of 180 mm.

3.2.2 Overall width over fork arms

The overall width over fork arms, D (see figure 1), inrelation to the corresponding dimensions of pallets inaccordance with ISO 6780 shall be as follows.

a)

b)

D shall not exceed 570 mm for trucks correspond-ing to pallets having a minimum entry width of590 mm (pallets 800 mm wide).

D shall not exceed 690 mm for trucks used inconjunction with pallets having a minimum entrywidth of 720 mm (pallets 1 000 mm or morewide).

3.3 Fork arm lengths

NOTE 2 Dimensions A, B and C are related to the di-mensions of the pallet and the minimum openings in thebottom deck, which are symmetrically disposed about theaxes of the pallet. See ISO 6780.

The overall length of fork arms, A (see figure 1), shallnot exceed the value in table 1 corresponding to theappropriate nominal value of 1 or w as defined inISO 6780.

3.4 Wheel position

Dimension B is the shortest possible distance be-tween the heel of the truck and the, nearest point ofthe trail wheel closest to the heel.’Dirnension C is thelargest possible distance between the heel of thetruck and the furth~st point of the trail wheel furthestfrom the heel (see figure 1). Dimensions B and Ccontrol the positioning of the trail wheels relative tothe heel of the truck during lifting. The values ofdimensions B and C shall be such that, when thewheels pass through the minimum size of openings inthe bottom deck of the pallet, a minimum clearance Jof 6 mm is maintained between the components ofthe truck and the edges of the deck members formingthe opening in the bottom deck of the pallet (seefigure 3).

When the truck is operated so that the distance be-tween the underside of the fork arms and the groundis 34 mm or greater, the clearance J should also bemaintained at the upper side of the bottom deck.
