ABOUTOrganized by the Joint Graduate Program in Communication and Culture
at York University and Ryerson University in Toronto, Intersections | Cross- sections acknowledges its presence on the traditional territory of multiple
Indigenous Nations.
Toronto is in the Dish With One Spoon Territory. In acknowledgment of the land treaties of this territory, we recognize and thank the Anishinaabe, Mississaugas, Métis and Haudenosaunee Nations. We also recognize the
treaties’ spirit to protect and care for the Great Lakes Region.
Intersections | Cross-sections is an annual conference and art exhibition organized by the Joint Graduate Program in Communication and Culture
at Ryerson University and York University in Toronto. Held from March 6-7, 2020, the student organized conference features both academic and creative
contributions.
This year’s theme is Changing the Current. Let’s engage with, challenge, and transcend dominant and hegemonic narratives of contemporary society, to create a space to evaluate and
reflect on the perspectives, bodies of knowledge, and stories that have been ignored, erased, or made invisible throughout history.

TITLE: THE MEANING OF ‘MEAT’: NEGOTIATING DISCURSIVE BOUNDARIES IN
VEGAN AND PLANT-BASED BURGERS
RYAN J. PHILLIPS
STUDENT KEYNOTE SPEAKER
I am a PhD Candidate in Ryerson University’s Communication & Culture program, where my research is focused on rhetoric, promotional cultures, and the political economy of communication. My recently completed dissertation project interrogates the rhetorical strategies of vegan and plant-based foods promotion, with an extended case study on the A&W Beyond Meat Burger campaign. I trace the cultural history of hamburgers and critically engage with the ongoing boundary work of ‘meat’ and ‘burger’ as food categories. Ultimately, I argue that Beyond Meat and other plant-based promotional cultures serve to reinforce the dominant social, cultural, and economic logic of consumer capitalism. In addition to food, I am also engaged in research examining advertising and audiences in sports media, as well as a new project that is investigating the promotional cultures of recreational cannabis in Canada.

CONFERENCE CODE OF CONDUCT
ISCS 2020
Intersections | Cross-Sections (IS | CS) provides a space for attendees to receive continuing education, collaborate with colleagues, and to build professional networks. To provide all participants – members and other attendees, speakers, exhibitors, staff and volunteers – the opportunity to benefit from this event, we are committed to providing a harassment-free environment for everyone, regardless of gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, disability, physical appearance, ethnicity, religion or other group identity.
The IS|CS committee seeks to provide a space in which diverse participants may learn, network and enjoy the company of colleagues in an environment of mutual human respect. We recognize the shared responsibility to create and hold the environment for the benefit of all. Some behaviours are, therefore, specifically prohibited:
• Harassment or intimidation based on race, religion, language, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, disability, appearance, or other group status.
• Sexual harassment or intimidation, including unwelcome sexual attention, stalking (physical or virtual), or unsolicited physical contact.
• Yelling at or threatening speakers (verbally or physically).
All participants are expected to observe these rules and behaviours in all conference venues, including online venues, and conference social events. Participants asked to stop hostile, or harassing behaviour are expected to comply immediately.
if you are being harassed, notice that someone else is being harassed, or have any other concerns, please contact a member of conference staff immediately. Conference staff will be happy to assist those experiencing harassment to feel safe for the duration of the conference. We value your attendance.
Conference participants seek to learn, network and have fun. Please do so responsibly and with respect for the right of others to do likewise.
