Texting is DANGEROUS

• On July 11, a teen named Alexa Longeuira fell into an open manhole while texting.

• The only casualty: her embarrassment and her left shoe.

Texting While Driving Really Is Dangerous

• This isn’t exactly breaking news• Statistics show texting while driving increases

the risk of an accident by 23-times!• The average person looks at a text on their

phone for 4.5 seconds – that’s long enough to travel 100 yards at 55 mph

• Against the law in VA as of July 1• 46% of teens text while driving

• 70% of Americans send at least one text message per day.

• 40% of cell phone users in the U.S. use texting on a regular basis.

Using Texting Wisely

• Texting can be abused, just like everything else.

• Irresponsibility with texting can have consequences you don’t think about.

message to girlfriends/boyfriends, etc. • This is dangerous and not to mention wrong• 20% of teens admit to sending these X-Rated

• Teens see it as just another way of flirting• Teens don’t see the seriousness of the matter• There are now cases in 10 states involving

“sexting” with Child Pornography charges

The Bottom Line• We need to be watching our kids. • We need to be cognizant of what they are

doing. • A 14-year old should not have a lock code on

their phone that you don’t know about. • Kids are less likely to act irresponsibly if they

are held accountable for their actions.

• Started in 2004 as an intranet social network at Harvard

• Reportedly worth $40 billion• Has overtaken MySpace in number of users:

150 million worldwide• “Closed” Social Network

• You can be as open or as closed as you want to be on Facebook

• There are privacy settings and account settings on Facebook that you need to be aware of

• Don’t put all of your personal info in your profile for everyone to see!

• Don’t become friends with someone you don’t know.

• Don’t post pictures you don’t want everyone to see.

• Don’t post messages or wall posts you don’t want everyone to see.

• Predecessor to Facebook, but was overtaken by it in 2006

• Started in 2003 as one of the first widespread Social Networking sites

• Has over 115M users, only 40% of them active• Cut 30% of it’s workforce of 1,000 employees

in June 2009• Seen as “unsafe” by teens

• “The next big thing”• Has exploded over the past 24 months by

adding 45M new users• Celebrities like it because they can say what

they want without media distortion• So WHAT is it?• Go to demo…

• Video sharing site with over 2 billion videos• Every minute 10 hrs of video is uploaded to

the site• Owned by Google• The uploading of videos containing

defamation, pornography, copyright violations, and material encouraging criminal conduct is prohibited by YouTube’s terms of service.

A Common Sense Approach

• Just like radio and television before it, internet usage must be regulated

• Our kids have lives on the internet! Do you know what they’re doing?

• There are ways for you to keep you and your kids safe while on the web.

• 1 in 7 children who use the internet have been sexually solicited.

• 1 in 5 children (10 to 17 years old) receives unwanted sexual solicitations online. 1

• 2 in 5 abductions of children ages 15-17 are due to Internet contact. 2

The Bottom Line

• Managing your kids’ internet time and content is a full-time job, but it has be done.

• It comes down to what you will allow• Kids need a strong foundation to lean on. If

gone unchecked, kids will most likely find trouble on the internet.

It’s EVERYWHERE• We have all run across some form of

pornography while on the internet• 15% of the internet is pornography• $17 billion last year in revenue• Largest “consumer” of pornography is the 12-

17 age group• Over 100,000 sites contain illegal child

pornography

• At a 2003 meeting of the AAML, two-thirds of the lawyers said internet pornography played a significant role in the divorces.

• 29% of born-again Christians think it is morally acceptable to view sexually explicit material.

• 47% of families admit that pornography is a problem in their home.

So how do we combat it?

• We are in a constant war. Sex in our media is rampant.

• There is an entire industry centered around combating pornography addiction.

• Focus Groups, Books, Websites, and various other means of help are at our disposal.
