He neithe1· slept nor ate as he drew pictures, maps, and charts, foretelling how peace would be taken from the earth and Armenia would be overrun by the Tm·ks. The A.J:menian Ch 1·istians were wained they would be

·· massac1·ed unless they went to a land across the ocean which the pictu1·es arld maps 1·evealed to be America. God p1·omised to bless a11d p1·osper those who obeyed. This 1·ecorded p1·ophecy was ca1·efully preserved by the Arme-11ian people, who waited £01· the time when its full mea11ii1g would be 1·e­vealed and God would lead them out.

In the meantime, the1·e was a great ot1tpou1·ing of the Holy Spirit that swept across Russia and had now moved to A1·menia. Among the first to 1·eceive this Pentecostal expe1·ience was

a Presbyterian family in Kara Kala, named Shaka1ian. The father, Demos Shaka1·ian, and his wife had five daughters but no son. In those days it was a reproach £01· an A1·menian fam­ily to be without a son. The mothe1· was deeply distm ·bed about this.

A SON IS BORN In May, 1891, Mother Shakarian

was sitting in he1· home, weeping be­cause God had 11ot given he1· a s011. A great uncle who was visiting them sudden I y rose f1·om his chai1·, laid down the Bible he had been reading, walked ove1· to he1· and said, ''God hea1·d yoU1· p1·ayer, one year from this day you will be the mothe1· of a son.>' Exactly one yea1· f1·om that day, May 25, 1892, a son was bo1n. The pa1·ents named him Isaac , £01· like Abraham> s child, he was a son of promise.

When Isaac was eight yea1·s old, God began to speak again to the Rus-

sian who had written the prophetic warning to Armenia. Forty-five years had passed since he had prepared the charts and maps, and now the Lord told him to warn the Armenians that the time had come for the prophecy to be fulfilled. So, at 56 years of age, the prophet began telling tlie people: ''The time has come! Now is the time to leave this co11ntry!''

The word quickly spread among the Armenian Pentecostals, and many Rus­sian Pentecostals, that it was time to go. In the year 1900 they began their exodus to America. They took with them the written prophecy and pre­served it in the church they established in Los Angeles.

LED BY GOD Five years later, Demos Shakarian

left Armenia, taking with him his wife, daughters and son Isaac, going first to New York and then to Los Angeles. Many of the Ar1nenian unbelievers mocked and ridiculed them, but the

Pentecostal exodus to America con­tinued until 1912 when finally the last Pentecostal family left Kara Kala, the place where the prophecy was first delivered.

In just two years World War I broke out and the death and destruction began. The Turks overran Armenia and every soul in Kara Kala was de­stroyed. Between three and four mil­lion were killed in the terrible on­slaught - the mockers and scoffers were destroyed. The prophecy given in 1855 was reaffirmed in 1900, and finally fulfilled in 1914 and the years that followed. In the meantime, the Pentecostal Christians, who believed . God and heeded the warning, were safe in America; among them was the Demos Shakarian family and their divine charge~ Isaac. Their home became a center of worship for the Armenians and Russians who had escaped.

America, Isaac's fathe1· Demos and two Armenian friends we1·e walking down San Pedro Street in Los Angeles. As they neared Azusa Street they heard the familiar sounds of singing, p1·aying, and p1·aising they we1·e ac­customed to in then: own services. Here, in a ho1·se barn converted into a mission, they found people speaking in tongues. The same kind of Pente­costal outpouring that came to At·­me11ia they 110w found in Ame1·ica. The Pentecostal expe1·ience came to Jews in Jerusalem, Catholics in Rus­sia , Presbyte1·ians in Aimenia, and now to a great c1·oss-section of all races and creeds at Azusa Street in Los An­geles. Though in diffe1·ent places at diffe1·ent times it was unmistakably the same glo1·ious power of God that fell in the Uppe1· Room on the day of Pentecost; and all who 1·eceived this baptism in the Holy Spirit reacted in

the same way to the wonderful ex-• penence.

A NEW RESPONSIBILITY Isaac Shaka1·ian was sixteen when

his father died and he then accepted the 1·esponsibility of taking care of his mothe1· and fou1· sisters. His business cai·eer started as a Los Angeles news ­boy, followed by three years in a ha1·­ness factory whe1·e he worked hard to supply the needs of the large family. At nineteen he went into the whole­sale f1uit business. During these years his mothe1· felt she should help Isaac by going to work and ea1ning some of the money need e d for the family. Though Isaac was but a young lad he 1·efused to allow her to work at a job, feeling he1· place was in the home taking ca1·e of his sisters and the house. He tlu·eatened to leave and let he1· assume all the 1·esponsibility if she ever took a job.

One day, co11trary to Isaac's wishes , his mother accepted a job and went to work. When Isaac arrived home he asked his sisters w he1·e their mothe1· had gone; they told him she had a job. Immediately he packed all his belong­ings in a box and went to the front po1·ch to await his mother's 1·etum.

Arriving home, she saw the box and asked where he was going. Isaac ex­plained that he was going to leave all the responsibilities up to he1· now that she had taken a job, jt1st as he had p1·omised. The weeping mother as­su1·ed him she would neve1· 1·etu1n to the job if he 1·emained with them -so Isaac unpacked and continued to be the sole provider for his father's family.

STEPS TO SUCCESS -By 1912 Isaac had married and

moved to Downey, Cali£01nia. He had saved enough money to buy a plot of land and three Holstein cows ... which began the Reliance Dai1y. From this humble beginning he built it into the wo1·ld' s largest i11dependent dairy by 1943 - f1·om th1·ee to 3,000 cows. This was accomplished th1·ough com­plete faith in the God who had led his people, and a willingness to wo1·k. He se1·ved as p1·esident of the Reliance Dai1·y ente1·p1·ise t1ntil his death F1·i-

IT WAS JUST one week befo1·e an event destined to alte1· my life and

,lffect the futm·e of a g1·oup of A1·­merlian people, that Isaac a11d I sat down to study the Bible and p1·ay togethe1·. Little did we 1·ealize on F1·iday night, Octobe1· 30, that exactly 011e week late1· God would take him home.

Isaac often sha1·ed the bm·dens of . his hea1t with me and the Lord gave

us inspiration togethe1· as we talked about his message for the following St1nday i11 tl1e A1·menian Full Gospel Chu1·ch, where he was lay-pasto1·.

He loved his A1·menian people and the ministry God had given him among

them. Countless times, he was so tired in body f1·om the. labors of the day, my heart ached £01· him. When questioned, ''Should we call someone today and let him minister?'' Isaac would say, ''God called me, I must be faithful.'' Then we looked to the Lo1·d and his strength was renewed.

Isaac would 1·ise early Sunday mo1n­ings, go to the den, kneel in praye1· and talk to God about the message we had discussed . D1·iving to church, we would ask the Lo1·d for His blessings upon the people.

was: ''Edna, did I deliver the message all right? Did you think it blessed the people?'' Whenever his people needed correcting, he would say, ''I can't chas­tise 01· scold them; we will pray and let the love of God bring the erring one back into His will.'' Yes, Isaac loved his people.

As we sat down to study that Friday night, the anointing of the Holy Spirit came. I opened my Bible to Deutero­nomy 34:7, the portion of Scripture began, ,c ••• Moses w.as an hundred and twenty years ola when he died: his eye was not dim, nor his natural force abated." Moses was old, it is true, but he had not attained to the years of his father, Amron, who lived to be 137, as did his grandfather and great-grandfather. Why must Moses, whose life was more serviceable than any of theirs, die at 120 - especially since he felt not the decay of age, but was fit for service? The answer is that Moses' work was finished; God was going to raise up others.

,cN ow after the death of Moses the servant of the Lord, it came to pass that the Lord spake unto Joshua . .. Moses my servant is dead; now there­I ore arise, go over this Jordan, thou and all this people, unto the land which, I do give to them, even to the children of Israel'' (Joshua 1:1-2).

God spoke to Joshua, ''Arise and go." We know the people were broken­hearted - the "Bible says they mourned for Moses 30 days. Their great leader was gone. How could they go on? Sorrow filled their hearts. They wanted to stay in the place Moses ·had been, where he had blessed them, led them,

and had been their strength and wis­dom. They leaned on him heavily. The children of Israel stood still, their strength was gone. They wanted to sit and mourn, but they only saw the natural - God saw the supernatural.

''Isaac," I said, ''this is the message I feel God would have you bring ·this Sunday.'' As I spoke, inside me there was turmoil; I did not want to say what I knew God wanted said.

''This is not r!ght," I told myself, ''Isaac is not going to relinquish his leadership ... No, Lord ... '' The- in­spiration kept coming .and I resented it. ''I can't let Isaac go. He is well and strong; his ministry is not finished . . . '' These thoughts struggled within, but tire Holy Spirit continued to speak through me.

Isaac listened intently, then he be­gan to rejoice: ''Yes, that's the mes­sage I must bring Sunday!'' My in­ward struggle ceased and I prayed, ''Lead us, 0 God, Thy will be done."

Isaac was as fit for service as he ever was, yet the Lord came and took him - his work was finished. Isaac had returned home Friday, Novem­ber 6, after a full day of work. Before reru:ing, he spread the news­paper across the foot of the bed and leisurely glanced through it. I tmned aside for a brief moment, and in that time, Isaac sl11mped on the bed.

I held him in my arms as he slipped away. His eyes were open the last few minutes of his life and he looked at me with love and compassion. He never wanted me to cry. His eyes seemed to say, ''Edna, I'm sorry; don't ,, cry.

My heart is broken for I have lost the one I loved, the one God gave me. Our time together was all too short - 14 years and 3 months. In the natural I would want to go and lie down beside his grave and stay ... Jn my own strength I can't go on, but the Lord speaks to me and I do go on.

''Dear God," I pray, ''don't listen to my heart, it is broken; don't listen to what my lips utter, they can't help but express the great love for my dear companion; my h,eart is lonely. Don't see the tears that fall from my cheeks constantly, they are a valve to my heart and give some release. Dear God, listen to my soul's cry; see my soul's desire. Anoint me afresh and fill me with the love for humanity You gave Isaac. Give me tHe understanding that was his. Give me the unceasin ·g love You gave him- love that overlooked people's mistakes, love that overlooked those who would try to hurt him when he bied to help, love that reached out a helping hand to all races of people in every walk of life. Dear God, let me by Thy marvelous grace, carry on Isaac's beautiful testimony,

that will help souls find their way to the Cross of Jesus Christ.''

I will never forg~t the night Isaac brought me to our home. The living rOOII\ was filled with precious Ar­menian people. We walked in and stood in the doorway. Isaac said, ''This is my wife.''

I felt so honored as they all rose to their feet. The women came for­ward, embraced me and said, ''W el­come. '' Then the men came and shook my hand, saying, ''Welcome.'' They asked us for a testimony. As we spoke, God's blessing came upon us a.nd said, ''W 1 '' I "ll e come. w1 never, no never, forget that night. God put such a love within my heart for -all Armenian people.

I appreciate every word of comfort and strength they have always given me - to know that I have been ac­cepted although I do not speak their language. They have taken much time to help me understand and I want to dedicate my life anew to all of them.

By God's help, Moses came through many, many hard-trials, but there was always victory, miracles. His people

were told to march on toward Jordan. It speaks of death. We are all walk­ing toward it, but without fear now. They marched on, for they knew God would open Jordan's river when they arrived there; God did, and they entered Canaan rejoicing!

Isaac said, when we talked about Jordan in this message, ''I'll tell my people, life is like a Jordan River -hearta ches, trials, sorrows - but I'll tell them there is glory on the other 'd ,,,

was the preparation for his crossing over Jordan to the glorious side of heaven. I know if we could hear Isaac now he would say to everyone, young and old, ''Come walk, place your hand in the hand of my · lovely Lord , and He will lead you safely through."

ISAAC'S MINISTRY Not only was he a civic leader and

successful businessman, but Isaac Sha­kariail never lost sight of the spiritual heritage that was his. He served ten years as a lay-minister of the Full Gospel Armenian Church of East Los Angeles. It was his inspiration, sacri­fice, and direction that made it pos­sible for his son Demos to launch the tremendous ministry of the Full Gospel Business Men's Fellowship In­ternational.

isters. His life was a great blessing to many pastors, evangelists, and mis­sionaries. The prayers, words of in­struction, and financial support he gave helped many to a ministry they would not have otherwise enjoyed.

To ·carry the gospel to all men was the desire of his heart. The last thing he did before coming home the day he passed away, was to witness to a real estate broker about the Lord Jesus · Christ. After his funeral another businessman asked this broker what he knew about Isaac Shakarian~ ''This I know,'' he said, ''he was a man of God.'' This same testimony was given about him by leaders of the 48th Agri­culture District when final tribute was paid him at a recent dinner.

When this patriarch of the church finished his·work, God took him home, and just as his birth was foretold so his death was made known. The Sun­day before his passing on Friday, God spoke to Robert Thom, who was visit­ing in the Arme~an Church, and told him He was going to take Isaac home. Rev . Thom shared this revelation with .

oth ers during the week that followed. The night God took Isaac, a member of the same f arnily that had prophe­sied his birth was called to pray for him. Kneeling to pray, he suddebly stopped and told his wife there was no need to pray - Isaac had · gone ''home." He knew this . because God gave him a vision of Isaac being em­braced by leaders of the Armenian Church who had passed on years before. ·

Isaac Shakarian's success in life as a businessman and philanthropist was matched only by his faith in God.

ls,1ac had scarcely a1·1·ived in Ame1·­ica whe11 his father died, and he be­came head of the house; earning the living as a 11ewspape1· boy , f17.1it ped­dle1·, and a wo1·ke1· in leather. H e manag ed to save some money , bought th1·ee cows and sta1·ted a dai1·y in Down ey, Calif 01·nia.

He became a leade 1· in his com- ., 111unity, but above all he became a leade1· in the Ch1·istian wo1·ld. The Lo1·d inspii ·ed his hea1·t to sponsor men of God- men who were g1·eat p1·eache1·s, evange lists, pasto1·s, and 111issionaries. He began to stamp his family with his character, integ1·ity of spii·it , and g lo 1· i o us faith in Jesus Ch1·ist. He became a force, a whole man , a leade1· of men.

Isaac Shaka1·ian was happy , filled with joy, kindness . He had an out­going spi1·it. I knew this man inti ­mately. I loved him and he loved me.

He touched my life in the begin-11i11g of 1951. I had heard of a g1·ea t

·family on the West Coast named Shaka1·ian. I heard the names Isaac and Demos eve1·ywhere.

We were planning to pitch ot1r big tent in Oakland , but there was diffi­culty in securing th e site. Thousands had p1·ayed £01· that meeting, and when it seemed we would have to cancel ou1· crusade the Lord showed one group that He would raise up someone to see to it that the meeting would be conducted. In a flash of in­spi1·ation I asked ou1· co-evangelist, M1·. DeWeese, to telephone the Shaka1·ians in California and ask them if th ey could help, even though I had not met them. By shee1· force of their influence they opened a choice spot in Oakland , Califo1·nia, for our tent. This not only happened the1·e, but in Los Angeles, and San Francisco also. F1·om that time the Shaka1ian family has been interwoven with ours - not only with our lives, but with thous ­a11ds of othe1·s.

I remembe1· this man and the little things about him. The1·e was the time in Fresno, California, when I arrived to find the hotels filled . The only 1·oom available was a very small one with

little ventilation. As a result, I was having difficulty studying, and pre­pa1·ing for my nightly meetings. Isaac and Edna drove up to Fresno to see me. He wanted to go up to my room and have a wo1·d of p1·ayer, but when he saw it he said, ''B1·other Oral, what are you doing in this room?'' I ex­plained the situation to him; then he said, ''I'll be right back.'' In five minutes he 1·etu1·ned saying, ''The po1·ters are coming up to move you.'' They moved me into a beautiful suite. I don't know how Isaac did it, but this was one of the ways God used him.

Now he is a blessed man. Some say he is dead, but the Scriptures say he is blessed: '' ... blessed a1·e the dead which die in the Lord, from hence­forth that they may 1·est from their labo1·s and then· works do fallow them.'' God does not look upon life as we do, and I am glad. Isaac is a blessed man for he died in the Lo1·d .

Isaac Shakarian did not die merely in some concept, ·no1· in one particular philosophy of life , nor in some specific theology, but he died in a person -the Lord Jesus Christ. This muscle and bone house in which he lived for 72 yea1·s was the mortal house, but inside was the inner man. Jesus teaches us that a human being is made in the image of God; he is a spirit, and he lives in a muscle and bone house with a mind and £1·ee will. Isaac lived in that house - that glorious mortal spirit; a spirit that had been born-again, and filled with the Holy Ghost. He is not in that house now; he is in the Lord - he is blessed.

Isaac died in a Pe1·son, the only Man that was ever bo1n a whole man ,

Jesus Christ. He died in the Man who was the only one who went about tell­ing men they could be made whole. He died in the only Man who faced death and destroyed its power. He died in a Man who rose f1·om the dead; who was lifted bodily from this eart h as a glo1·ified being, and who is at the 1·ight hand of the Father giving gifts among men. He died in th e Man who said, ''I am the way, the truth and the life .... "

Isaac went everywhere doing good. He did not pick out one person or one g1·oup; he loved all people. He labored for the Lord, and the Bible says, '' ... his wo1·ks do follow him ... . '1

There is something honorable about wo1·k, and Isaac was an honorable man. He loved to work. He was not afraid to labo1· with his hands, or with his mind. People would say, ''Isaac is the man with the ideas . Isaac is the man young in spirit.''

Salem, Oregon Many denominations were represented in the 140 present at the meeting to establish the Salem, Oregon Chapter. Guest speaker, Louis La Marr, noted lawyer, delivered a stirring message. Those present were also blessed with the testimony of Marcel la Garland from Corvallis E.U.B. Church who told of her healing of a whiplash injury suffered in a car accident more than a year ago.

In 1900 a fo1·mer Methodist min­

iste1·, Cha1·les F. Parham, opened a Bible College in Topeka, Kansas, with fo1·ty students housed in a con­ve1·ted Midwest mansion . These men and women, twelve of them ministe1·s, had been asked to study in£01·mally the subject of baptism i11 the Holy Ghost while Parham was out of town p1·eaching in Decembe1· of that year . They d id so, following his suggestion that they search the Biblical passages for some certain evidence of this bapt ism . On his return he was amazed to find that they had all reached the same conclusion: one evidence had come eve1·y time with the Holy Spirit in the Bible, and that was speaking in othe1· tongues. It was then that the g1·oup began to wait expecta11tly p1·ay­ing and meditating, and the baptism of the Holy Spii·it came upon them, H1·st one and then upon seve1·al, and they spoke in tongt1es. This new 1·eligious phenomenon soon atb·acted attention, and newspapers in Kansas City a11d St. Lewis 1·epo1·ted what was happening at Bethel Bible College . Many people came to see for them­selves, and Parham with several of the students enthusiastically plam1ed a missionary tour of the counh·y. It did not come off. Afte1· two weeks of meetings, which began as fi·ont pa~e 11ews, the g1·oup 1·etu1ned to Topeka .

Fo1· two years the1·e was no wide accep ta11ce of this expe1·ience: there

were a few ''Pe 11tecostal baptisms'' 01· conve1·sions but not an immediate ac­ceptance of the message that this was t,-ie same thing which had happened to the apostles originally with p1·e­st1mably the same effects . The Pa1·­hams went on with the school in Kansas City afte1· the Topeka mt1nsion was sold , and then went to Law1·e11ce, Kansas, where he held se1·vices. Then ea1·ly in 1905 an invitation came f1·om 01·chard, Texas, where a woman who had worked with Pa1·ham was b·ying to conduct he1· own mission. He p1·eached the1·e on Easte1· Su11day, and in two weeks almost an enti1·e community had 1·eceived his ft1ll gos­pel message.

The Pai·hams 1·etu1·ned to Texas in the summer that yea1·, and in Houston and a numbe1· of other cities the 1·e­vival continued to g1·ow. The expe1·i­ence of tongues was 1·eceived by sco1·es of people , and the healings and othe1· amazing expe1·iences contint1ed to oc­cm·. In Decembe1 · he established a Bible school in Hot1ston, simila1· to the Topeka college , and it was f1·om he1·e that Pentecostalism 1·eached Los An­geles and 1·eally began to mt1sh1·oom.

But Seymour sti1·1·ed up quite a different 1·esponse in different hea1·e1·s. He was one-eyed, unprepossessing in manne1·, and rathe1· careless about his pe1·son. He was also positive about the message he had to b1·ing, even though he had not spoken in tongues himself. He p1·eached the :61·st Sunday mo1·n­ing, April 1, talking about the second chapte1· of Acts and what should hap­pen today, and then went home with one of the mem be1·s £01· dinne1·. When they 1·eturned £01· the scheduled afte1·­noon se1-vice, they found the mission locked. He was told that he could not p1·each such a doctrine f1·om their pulpit again, and so, with no place to go, he went back home with the same family, none too welcome a guest. It was two 01· th1·ee nights late1· tha t he asked them to join him in praye1·, and a diHe1·ent feeling about him be­gan to g1·ow. Seve1·al membe1·s of the chu1·ch dropped by to find out what had happened to him. One of their f1·iends was a Baptist minister who asked him to ho Id a p1·a ye1· meeting in he1· home. And then people began to p1·ay £01· this experience of which he spoke . A p1·ot1·acted p1·ayer mee t­ing began in the Baptist home ·: Mean­while Seymour's host had a vision of the apostolic experience and he asked to 1·eceive it. In spite of Seymour's p1·otest, ''No, the Lord wants me to lay hands suddenly on no man," 16 he contint1ed to ask that evening, April 9. Suddenly the1·e we1·e seven voices , as those who were p1·aying were ''struck from thei1· chai1·s," as one of them described it, and 1·eceived the

• same experience. For three days and nights the little

house was filled with people p1·aying and rejoicing, continuously and loudly. People came f1·om all ove1· until the st1·eets a1·ound were c1·owded. The Neg1·0 g1·oup was soon joined by white people and ot1tg1·ew the house in ,vhich they we1·e assembling. ( This is one easy way to accomplish i11teg1·a­tion.) It ,vas then that an old livery stable 011 Azusa Sb·eet, which had been 1·enovated as a cht1rch bt1t not t1sed fo1· a long time, was found , and space was clea1·ed to make a cht11·ch in it agai11. Fo1· the next years this Azusa Missio11 was the cente1· of Pentecostal­ism . People came f1·om all ove1· the count1·y and ca1·1·ied the ne,.vs and also the experience in a chain 1·eaction which has prod t1 c e d Pen t e cost al chu1·ches numbe1·ing nea1·ly two mil­lion mem be1·s in fifty yeru·s. Not only the Assemblies of God, the la1·gest g1·oup, but the Foursqua1·e chu1·ch and a dozen othe1·s sp1·ing f1·om this 01·igi­nal pra ye1· meeting in 1906. In all the1·e '-1re twenty-six cht11·ch bodies which t1·ace thei1· experience with tongt1es and their Pentecostal doct1·ine of tongues to the events we have de­scribed .

Mea11while across the sea in Wales the1·e had arisen a mighty religious 1·evival, and amid the magnificent Welsh singing, tongues b1·oke fo1·th there. It is inte1·esting that, ,vhile the exper·ience ,vas obse1·ved and }·epo1ted in 1904, the1·e is at least one quite tho1·ot1gh account of the 1·evival ,vhich makes no menti~n of speaking in to11gues.1

• But the Et11·opean p1·ess ca1·-1·ied detailed accot1nts of the move­ment ,vhich began a little later in No1·,vay a11d No1·th Ge1·many, and es­pecially of a long Pentecostal 1·evival held i11 Zurich in the fall of 1910. The occt11·1·e11c:e was wo1·ld-,vide, pa1t of a to1·1·ent of 1·eligiot1s fe1·vo1·. It \vas i11 the ai1·, f1·om India and Aust1·alia to Kansas, and instances cot1ld be multi­plied to desc1·ibe the gift ,vith its characte1·istic 11nknown 01· occasionally 1·ecognizable languages, its sense of ft1lfillme11t and ne,v life, its contagious vitality a11d joy. One story in pa1ticular links togethe1· these fai·-flt1ng occur-1·e11ces with the st1·eam which began to flo,v f1·om Los Angeles.

It is told that in the year 1855, an eleven-year-old Russian boy in the village of Kara Kala in A1·menia 1·e­cei ved a se1·ies of prophetic visions. DL11·i11g the pe1·iod of a week in which he neithe1· slept no1· ate, this unedu­cated child p1·oduced a sheaf of int1·i­cate pictures, maps, and cha1·ts with a va1·iety of w1·itten text , sometimes sc1·awled, sometimes in beautiful hand­w1·iting. He fo1·etold the end of peace and p1·ophesied that the Turks would turn on the Ch1·istians and that those who were to go to a land ac1·oss the

ocean would be saved and blessed. The boy's visions we1·e studied and pondered ove1·, and he grew up in the village, 1·espected as a prophet. About twenty-five years later, the expe1·iences of the Holy Spirit which were similar to those in Russia began to take place in that a1·ea of Armenia. A small group, mainly A1menian P1·esbyte1·ians with the prophet among them, banded together in Pentecostal worship.

Among this g1·oup was the Sha­karian family in Kara Kala, whose name has become well known to Pen­tecostals ac1·oss the United States and in many other places in the 1960s. These and the following events have been p1·ese1·ved and handed down in the reco1·ds of this family who were one of the fi1·st to 1·eceive the gift of tongues in . A1·menia in 1880 . The father and head of the Shaka1·ian family had not accepted the evidence of glossolalia either for himself or even as coming from God, though he at­tended and he lped with thei1· services of wo1·ship. It happened, however, that his son Demos spoke fluent Rt1s­sia11, and when the Russian Pente­costal community lea1ned a few years late1· of the g1·oup simila1· to their own i11 A1·menia, they began to make peri­odic visits, coming by covered wagon to sha1·e in wo1·ship and fellowship . It fell to Demos Shakarian to a1·range homes for the visito1·s, p1·ovide then: place of wo1·ship, and welcome them with a feast. Ritual reqt1ired that he p1·ovide the best stee1· f1·om his he1·d for this impo1·tant occasion .

that the Russian wagons were ap­p1·oaching and went out to find that his fattest steer had been blemished by the loss of an eye. Rather than b1·eak with his own ideas of providing the best, he quickly slaughtered it t1nd hid the head in a sack under the wheat in his ba1·n. After the visito1·s a1·1·ived, eve1·ything went as usual until cl Rt1ssian elde1· was to bless the fam­ily and thei1· offering of beef. The p1·ophet had been standing by watch­ing when suddenly he walked out of the 1·oom and the 1·itual halted . The elde1· began a hymn, nor wanting to go on in his absence. In the midst of it the p1·ophet retmned with a sack in his hands which he openeg. in front of the kneeling family, telling how God had spoken to him in the moment befo1·e the blessing was to begin. Demos then confessed and was for­given by the whole congi·egation, and two things happened. His father ac­cepted completely the spiritual mani ­festations they had experienced as the wo1·d of God, and the entire com-

munity, b 1oth Russian and Arrr1enian, deter1nined to offe1· to God exactly what was requ'ired of them, no mat­te1· what thei1· personal judgments might be.

And so in 1900, when the prophet began to speak warnings '' out of a clear sky'' that the time had come fo1· the fulfillment of his original revela ­tions, he had listeners, and the word was spread among both the Russian and A1·menian groups. In the same yea1· an exodus began. It continued until 1912, two years befo1·e Tm·kish destn1ction of the village, and by then the last of the Pentecostal families had ]eft Kara Kala, taking with them the written p1·ophecies, the family memories and sto1·ies, and their own knowledge of experiences through which God is known. The Shaka1ian family came to Los Angeles, where their home again became the place where Armenian and Russian Pente­costals gathered to worship.

One day in 1906 Demos Shakarian, his brother-in-law, and anothe1· A1·­menian friend were walking down San Pedro Street in Los Angeles not long afte1· then· a1·rival there, when they hea1·d from a Ii ttle side sb·eet sounds of worship that were familiar. They walked up to an old building on Azusa Sb·eet and to their amazement found people, othe1· people right he1·e in Ame1·ica, speaking in tongues. It ap­pea1·s, as these events have been re­lated by Thomas R. Nickel in The Shakarian Story, that two streams of Pentecostal tradition had met in Los Angeles and that something was bound to happen.
